POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The Collaborative Research Center 1095 Discourses of Weakness and Resource Regimes at Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, is at the earliest convenience offering two

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (Postdoc, E 13 TV-G-U, 100%)

for the studies in Medieval Cultures to start as soon as possible. The fellowships are limited until 31 December 2018.

The CRC Discourses of Weakness and Resource Regimes supports comparative research in cultural modes of stabilisation and transformation. The Research Center is based on the working hypothesis that the combination of two fields of observation are peculiarly revealing for the diachronic and synchronic comparison of cultures: A culture’s organisation of resources (what is considered a resource and how are the respective – material or immaterial – goods distributed?) and a culture’s discourses on weakness (how are deficits modelled and how do these discursive models shape political-social practice?). For the time being, participants are historians, economic historians, ethnologists, philosophers, legal historians and sinologists; research fellows from other disciplines (e.g. literary studies, art history) are expressly welcome.

Tasks

The medieval project focusses on a macro historical discussion currently vivid throughout the disciplines of medieval research. In detail, it analyses the relation between the organisation of marriage, family and kinship on the one hand and the emergence of political and social institutions on the other. Within this broad macro historical perspective the fellows are expected to follow their own research interests. The project welcomes interests in a broad range of European regions, media or epochs. Experience in the Collaborative Research Center’s field of research is welcome, but not mandatory.

Requirements

An excellent dissertation is required in a discipline of medieval studies (history, art history, literary studies etc.) as well as the readiness to participate in the activities of the Research Center.

Contact

Please address applications with the usual documents (electronically only) until March 30th, 2015 to Prof. Dr. Bernhard Jussen, [email protected] (please cc to [email protected]).

GEORG ARNHOLD INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (GEI) and the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) are pleased to announce the second Georg Arnhold International Summer School on Education for Sustainable Peace on the theme of "Transitional Justice and Education: Engaging Children and Youth in Justice and Peacebuilding through Educational Media, Curricula and Outreach." It will take place in Braunschweig from June 22 to 27, 2015.

The Summer School will focus on educational media, curricula and curriculum reform, educational activities, and diverse actors such as teachers, NGOs, UN bodies, communities and governments in the context of transitional justice processes and policies. Particular emphasis will be placed on measures supporting a conflict-sensitive approach to coming to terms with past conflict and violence. In creating a bridge between the concepts of transitional justice and education for sustainable peace, the Georg Arnhold Summer School aims to reflect on lessons learned and explore innovative ways to help engage children and youth in justice and peacebuilding efforts through education, fostering their capacity for critical thinking and supporting their social and political empowerment and the social cohesion of the societies they live in.

The GEI and ICTJ thus invite original contributions that draw upon diverse contexts, theories and methods to shed new light on questions that include, but are not restricted to, the following four major sets of issues (see the Call for Papers for more information on relevant research questions):

Conflict-Sensitive Curricula and Curriculum Reform as Part of Transitional Justice Policies
Educational Media and Materials
Educational Activities in the Context of Transitional Justice Processes
Involving and Coordinating Stakeholders in Transitional Justice Education Programs
The week-long Summer School will bring together early-career scholars, senior researchers and practitioners interested in the fields of peace education and transitional justice from around the world. It will provide an interdisciplinary and international forum that will allow participants to debate and critically reflect upon key research questions, methods, findings and their implications. The academic program will include interactive lectures and workshops by renowned experts, offering participants the opportunity to widen their research perspectives and improve their methodological competencies.

The working language of the Summer School will be English. No registration fees apply. Accommodation and meals will be provided for all participants and economy class travel expenses will be reimbursed.

HOW TO APPLY

The invitation to the Summer School is extended primarily to doctoral candidates and post-doctoral scholars from the humanities and social sciences (e.g. the fields of education, history, political sciences, sociology, law, anthropology and psychology). People working for international organizations and NGOs in the relevant fields are also welcome to apply. Applications from students enrolled in a Master's program and recent graduates with a Master's degree will be considered in exceptional cases.
