EARLY STAGE RESEARCHER – GRACE: GENDER AND CULTURES OF EQUALITY - ESR8

Level:  Junior
Position for:  Researcher
Unit:  Department of Gender Studies
Individual Project Title: ESR8 –‘European boundaries and the production of cultures of equality’.

Duration: 36 months (Full Time)

Annual Salary: within the range of EU Marie Currie European Training Network programs

Monthly Mobility Supplement: according to the rules of EU Marie Currie European Training Network programs

Monthly Family Allowance (if eligible):    according to the rules of EU Marie Currie European Training Network programs

Details Specific to the Post

The Central European University (Hungary) invites applications for a 36 months fixed term post (1 March 2016 until 31 January 2019) as an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in gender studies to research and write a PhD thesis within the area of ‘European boundaries and the production of cultures of equality’.

Successful applicant will be based with the Department of Gender Studies at the Central European University.

This is a part of a job call for fifteen researchers to work on the EU-funded European Training Network ‘GRACE: Gender and Cultures of Equality’.

We welcome applications from candidates with Master’s degrees, a demonstrable interest and experience in gender studies, English language skills, and a willingness to spend a period of 6-9 months on secondment at Utrecht University (Netherlands). Applicants will be required to submit a 1000 word research proposal outlining the innovative ways in which they will tackle this project (further details below).

Background and Context: What is GRACE

The aim of the GRACE (Gender and Cultures of Equality in Europe) project is to systematically investigate the cultural production of gender equalities within Europe. Previous scholarly work focuses on European gender equality policies, GRACE extends this work by drawing on innovative and interdisciplinary methodologies to investigate an under-examined aspect of those processes, namely the production of cultures of equality that underpin, enable and constrain those changing policy and legislative frameworks. Our methodological approach understands culture as neither normative frameworks nor ways of representing the world, but more fundamentally as the process through which people create the worlds they inhabit. We will ask three main questions:

•    How have cultures of equality been produced, embodied, objectified and visualised in art, media, material and popular culture, as well as ‘official’ discourse in Europe?

•    How might cultures of equality in Europe be produced and performed differently?

•    In what ways do changing and contested cultural productions shape and constrain people’s awareness about, perceptions of, responses to and deployments of equality discourses within specific social contexts?

The GRACE project will recruit, employ and provide advanced training for 15 Early Stage Researchers who will research the production of cultures of gender equality across five specific sites where cultures of gender equalities are produced and contested by differently situated social agents. These five sites form the core of our five research and training Work Packages, and are focused as follows:

1.    mediated cultures of gender equality;

2.    urban cultures of gender equality;

3.    intellectual and activist cultures of gender equality;

4.    textual and artistic cultures of gender equality;

5.    employing cultures of gender equality.

GRACE is designed to: equip this new generation of ESRs to play a leading role in developing advanced techniques for investigating the production of cultures of gender equality; translate creative and critical capacities into innovative cultural practices within and beyond academia; and enable them to take up positions as experts in producing new gender equalities cultures.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

The successful candidate for this post will:

•    Research ‘European boundaries and the production of cultures of equality’ as part of WP 3 (Intellectual and Activist Cultures of Gender Equality). S/he will be employed by and enrolled on a PhD at CEU for 36 months from 1st March 2016, and will submit with the application a 1000 word research proposal outlining the innovative ways in which they will design a research project to investigate the following:

How do activists and intellectuals perceive, engage with and attempt to influence the EU’s near-neighbours in terms of advancing philosophies and practices of gender equality, considering both the pre-accession experience of new Eastern European members and the ongoing experience of those who border the EU. In addition to questions about gender and labour markets, family and the welfare state, the project will consider how the rights of sexual minorities are, and are not, linked performatively to presumed processes of integration and Europeanization.

Applicants should include in their academically rigorous and referenced proposals an indication of which areas of society, culture, politics, economics and/or the law they propose to research, which national contexts they propose to examine, and the innovative ways in which they propose to approach this methodologically.

For this project we are looking for a researcher with training and experience in doing innovative and reflexive empirical research, either qualitative or quantitative, and linking it to ongoing theoretical debates in the social sciences. The broad research topic should be social inequalities, and any aspect thereof would be considered as long as the concept of "gender" is relevant for describing and explicating it further. Comparative projects are especially welcome but doing comparative work is not a criterion for acceptance.

The applicant should submit a research proposal in which she/he describes the research problem, its theoretical relevance beyond its immediate geographical and empirical reach and explicate and justify the methodology chosen.

As a part of their research training, all applicants will also have the following duties:

•    Spend a compulsory secondment period of 6-9 months at Utrecht University (Netherlands) during the second year of their tenure. During this period they will receive further research training and will conduct comparative research.

•    Attend the following project-wide training events:

o    Spring 2016 - 1st GRACE Spring School: Methods training workshops and seminars in Hull (UK)

o    January 2017 - 1st GRACE Winter School - Employability Training Workshop in Bologna (Italy)

o    Spring 2017 - 2nd GRACE Spring School: Theorising and analysing cultures of equality workshops and seminars in Granada (Spain)

o    January 2018 - 2nd GRACE Winter School: Communicating cultures of equality – dissemination and exploitation training and workshop in Budapest (Hungary)

•    Collectively curate with the 14 other Early Stage Researchers the Museum of Cultures of Equality to be held at the GRACE final conference in Hull in the summer of 2019.

•    Contribute to the GRACE interactive digital hub through regular blog posts and the collective development of a GRACE Gender Equality App.

•    Contribute to the final project report in the summer of 2019.

•    Successfully complete and submit a PhD thesis before the project ends in August 2019.

The successful candidate will enroll into the PhD Program in Comparative Gender Studies and fulfill its requirements. The PhD Program in Comparative Gender Studies is a three-year graduate program registered with the Board of Regents of the State of New York (U.S.A.) for and on behalf of the State Education Department. It places a special emphasis on comparative and integrative perspectives in Women’s and Gender Studies. The requirements to be fulfilled by Doctoral Students enrolled in the program consist of 90 credits accumulated over three years of studies, passing the Comprehensive Exam after the end of the first year of studies, and the defense of the doctoral dissertation. The rationale and design of the PhD Degree Program in Comparative Gender Studies are based on the overarching scholarly and educational goals of the Department of Gender Studies at CEU. The program aims to combine theoretical and empirical inquiry into gender. Its activities and courses facilitate the examination of diversified patterns of social and cultural change, and allow interested students the opportunity to focus on Central-Eastern Europe in particular. Whatever the regional or textual focus students may choose, the program helps them understand gender in terms of local, national and transnational influences and articulations. For a detailed program description please see http://gender.ceu.edu/sites/gender.ceu.hu/files/attachment/basicpage/70/gensphdhandbook2015-2016final20150630.pdf

About Central European University

Central European University (CEU) is a research-intensive university specializing in graduate education in the social sciences, humanities, public policy, law, and business. It is located in Budapest, Hungary, and accredited in the United States and Hungary. The language of instruction is English. CEU’s mission is to promote academic excellence, state-of-the-art research, and civic engagement in order to contribute to the development of open societies around the world. The teaching staff consists of more than 180 resident faculty members from over 40 countries, in addition to a large number of prominent visiting scholars from around the world.

About Department of Gender Studies

The Department of Gender Studies at CEU is a unique and intellectually vibrant environment. Unlike many gender studies programs that rely on affiliated faculty based in other departments, our department has its own interdisciplinary faculty and curriculum. We offer a wide range of degree programs: one-year and two-year MA degrees in Gender Studies, and a PhD in Comparative Gender Studies. We also participate in two European-wide international MA programs that include mobility to other universities in each consortium: GEMMA, an Erasmus Mundus MA in Women’s Studies and Gender studies, and MATILDA, a European MA in Women’s History. The Department also offers non-degree options for study.

In its teaching and research the Department strives to understand gender studies as an interdisciplinary field open to different approaches, and we engage in theoretical debates across this broad field. We aim to understand gender as it relates to other social relations, structures of power and subject positions (such as class, “race”/ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, generation, and ableness). These intersecting structures and relations are studied recognizing local specificities (CEU as an institution is known for its expertise in studies of Central and Eastern Europe), transnational processes, and global inequalities.

CEU Eligibility Requirements:

Applications are accepted from candidates with an MA or equivalent degree from any discipline in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The applicant have to fulfill CEU requirements for language proficiency. See (http://www.ceu.edu/node/13737)

In addition, to qualify for the post, at the time of appointment, applicants must have less than the equivalent of 4-years full-time research experience since gaining the University degree which would entitle them to embark on doctoral studies in the country in which the degree was received.

- умение работать с электронными базами данных по антиковедению и медиевистике;

- владение как минимум одним (английский), лучше несколькими основными европейскими языками, достаточное для интенсивной работы со специальной литературой;

- опыт самостоятельной исследовательской работы в областях, связанных с темой проекта;

а) проанализировать вклад целого ряда факторов, в том числе: тип решаемой проблемной ситуации, этап возрастного или профессионального развития и др. в использование знаковых средств;

б) Выявить и проанализировать когнитивные факторы, влияющие на успешное  применение знаковых средств для решения разнотипных задач;

в) Проанализировать формы репрезентации разнотипных задач, связанные с использованием знаковых средств;

1.         Механизмы символизации в культурной традиции;

2.         Трансформации семиотического «сообщения»: книжный / устный / визуальный текст;

3.         Технология фольклорной трансмиссии;

4.         Ареальная структура фольклорных жанров;

5.         Рефлексивные формы локальной / региональной самоидентификации;

6.         Современный мегаполис в устных рассказах и неинституализованных ритуалах;

(1) исследование механизмов текстообразования и фольклорной трансмиссии, в т.ч. нарративов неофициальной устной истории, верований и обрядов, связанных с географическими и историческими объектами;

(2) анализ процессов конструирования «образа врага» как одной из основных антропологических и социальных констант, маркирующих границы добра и зла, легитимного и нелегитимного, координаты моральных, исторических и политических оценок;

(3) выявление изучение принципов, лежащих в основе осмысления оттопонимических дериватов локальными / региональными сообществами, функции в культуре определенного круга вариантов, утвердившихся в конкретных традициях;

— опыт работы с классическими письменными памятниками Китая, Японии, или Ирана, или с этимологическими корпусами хотя бы по одной из крупных языковых семей Евразии;
— знание на продвинутом уровне хотя бы одного классического языка (древне-китайский, классический японский / персидский) или опыт исследовательской работы в области компаративного анализа нескольких языков;
— желательно наличие публикаций по классическому востоковедению или сравнительно-историческому языкознанию;

 – изучения существующих практик электронного правительства (e-government), их классификация и выявление причин неудовлетворенности горожан;

- сравнительный анализ наиболее эффективных зарубежных и российских программ электронного правительства;

- проведение опросов и интервью с пользователями ресурсов электронного правительства и экспертных интервью с создателями этих систем;

- уточнение методов полевого социологического исследования в ситуации дигитализации;

- анализ того, как цифровые технологии могут использоваться для повышения эффективности коммуникации между муниципальной администрацией и сообществами горожан (сайты электронного правительства, мобильные приложения и т.п);

- проведение исследования дигитализации транспортных сетей российских  городов;

- изучение экономического потенциала геолокационных сервисов;

кандидат культурологии, зам. заведующего Лабораторией историко-культурных исследований ШАГИ РАНХиГС,  доцент факультета коммуникаций, медиа и дизайна НИУ ВШЭ, Лапина-Кратасюк Екатерина Георгиевна;

Scholarship: a monthly salary of EUR 2,125 – 2,717

Description
The Faculty of Humanities at Utrech University is offering 3 PhD positions within the project “Digital Crossings in Europe: Gender, Diaspora and Belonging” (CONNECTINGEUROPE). The project aims to investigate the relation between migration and digital technologies, in particular the way in which the ‘connected migrant’ contributes to new forms of European integration and cosmopolitan citizenship. The project explores digital diasporas in relation to issues of gender, ethnicity and affective belonging, focusing on how new technologies enhance new forms of connectivity between the homeland and destination countries, bus also across diasporas.

The project pioneers a new interdisciplinary method that combines media studies, postcolonial theories, digital humanities and gender studies, drawing from the humanities and social science. It proposes a comparative approach, based on qualitative digital methods, that focuses on Somali, Romanian and Turkish women migrants who have settled in some of Europe’s main cities (London – PhD1, Amsterdam – PhD2 and Rome – PhD3) and the way in which they keep digitally and emotionally connected to their homeland cities (Mogadishu, Bucharest, Istanbul – Postdoc). The project will chart how different forms of migration (labour, postcolonial and post socialist) impact on the new European order at the local and transnational levels.

Eligibility
Successful candidates should meet following requirements:

A (research) Master’s degree in gender, new media, cultural studies, anthropology, geography, history, international relations or a relevant humanities and social science background qualification at an equivalent level with a clear interest in migration, digital methods, gender studies, postcolonial theories and ethnography;
An outstanding record for work in the undergraduate and Master’s degrees;

JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN RUSSIAN AND/OR OTHER SLAVONIC LANGUAGES

University College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in Russian and/or other Slavonic Languages.

The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of three years starting on 1 October 2016.  Candidates should be engaged in literary, linguistic or cultural studies research related to the period 1800 to present.  Preference may be given to candidates whose research focusses on Russian, Czech, Slovak or Polish.  Candidates whose research is primarily in the field of history will not be considered.

Junior Research Fellowships are intended to provide opportunities for outstanding academics at the beginning of their careers.  Univ has at any time between 8 and 10 JRFs.  The College has one permanent Associate Professor in Russian, Professor Polly Jones, a Senior College Lecturer in Czech (with Slovak), Dr Zuzana Rihova, and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in Russian, Dr Samantha Sherry.  Further details about University College are available from the Univ website at http://www.univ.ox.ac.uk where details of the research of current Fellows can also be found.

The primary duty of the postholder is to carry out research, but most JRFs offer a limited amount of teaching for the College, in the interest of their career development.

The primary criterion for appointment to the Junior Research Fellowship will be research excellence.  Candidates must: (1) have a strong academic record; (2) be approaching the end of their doctoral research or have recently completed their doctorate; (3) have research expertise as established by publications, or demonstrate promise of such achievement; and (4) have a coherent plan of research for the duration of the fellowship.  The potential to become an effective teacher will be a secondary consideration.

Candidates must be confident that they will have obtained their doctorate by the start of their appointment.  This position is not intended for those who have already held another stipendiary JRF or equivalent or for those who obtained their doctorate more than two years prior to the application date (except in exceptional circumstances).
