2015 Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research
Jan 26, 2015

Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research.

The Summer Institute on Conducting Archival Research (SICAR) is a four-day seminar in which Ph.D. students receive training in conducting archival research from world-class faculty, researchers, archivists, and publishers. Although archival research is an integral part of many academic disciplines, it is virtually never taught at the graduate level. In an effort to address this deficiency, the George Washington University began the Summer Institute in 2003.

In 2015, SICAR is being organized jointly by the Wilson Center’s History and Public Policy Program and the George Washington University’s Cold War Group.

The Wilson Center and George Washington University now welcome applications from Ph.D. students from the US and abroad working on international relations and modern history in a variety of disciplines, including history, government and politics, international relations, sociology, anthropology, and public policy, as well as area and regional studies. Preference will be given to students who have defended their dissertation proposal and who are about to embark on archival research.

Pending the receipt of funding, the 2015 workshop will be held Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29, 2015 (participants are required to arrive in Washington by Monday, May 25). All sessions of SICAR will be held at the Wilson Center in downtown Washington, DC.

The deadline for applications is February 27, 2015.

1 PHD POSITION OR POSTDOCTORAL GRANT FOR WORK ON THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF KINSHIP
(starting May 1st 2015)

Integration and conflict are central points of reference for the analysis of the interaction of ethnic groups and states. The construction, meaning, and communication of identity offer an important field of research within this frame of reference. The analysis of descriptions of the self and others in processes of peaceful and violent interaction and, in particular, the development of identities in confrontations with other groups, are at the centre of this research program. Description and analysis of conflict mechanisms also play an important role here. Further background information concerning the Department can be found on our homepage: http://www.eth.mpg.de/cms/en/research/d1.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Within the general themes of identity/identification and difference, we run a programme on ‘Kinship Universals and Variation‘ (KUV) [link: http://www.eth.mpg.de/cms/de/people/d/heady/project4.html] – in the tradition of Morgan, Fortes, Goody and Lévi-Strauss, and in dialogue with comparable work being done under the heading of evolutionary anthropology.

The KUV programme is explicitly comparative, and uses a mixed research strategy in which researchers are expected to combine participant observation with the use of a specially designed Kinship Network Questionnaire (KNQ), designed for computer-assisted interviewing. The KNQ collects genealogical data (and data on comparable non-genealogical relationships) linking it to such themes as social and ritual interaction, mutual assistance, property transmission, naming and kinship terminology – in a format that can be used for comparative analysis.

We are looking for research proposals that are interesting in their own right, and that will also generate data that can be used for comparisons. We will favour proposals that explain how ethnographic material and KNQ data can be combined to shed light on the chosen research topic. As a rough guide, about one third of the field and analysis effort should be devoted to KNQ-related work. The applicants will be expected to share their KNQ data with other members of the KUV team for joint analysis and publication.

Applications focusing on Central Asia are particularly welcome, in the context of a joint research programme with the University of Zurich (http://casca-halle-zurich.org). However, other areas in the world will be considered if the suggested project fits particularly well into the thematic fields of the Department and of the KUV project.

The post will be based in Halle/Saale and the successful applicants will take part in the PhD training program of the Department ‘Integration and Conflict’.

Your Profile
Good field research skills, the ability to work in a team, and communication skills with good written and spoken English are required.

Qualifications in the anthropology of kinship would be highly welcome, and so would experience in quantitative and comparative methods.

As a rule dissertations are written in English. Acquisition of the German language is encouraged, especially if there is relevant literature on the research topic in German. Field Research is carried out in the local language.

Our Offer
A PhD position is generally awarded for 3 years. We expect our PhD students to complete a one year period of fieldwork as part of their studies.
A postdoctoral grant is generally awarded for 2 years with a possible extension of one year. It is not taxed and free from social security stipulations.

The Max Planck Society strives to employ more persons with disabilities and explicitly encourages applications. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in underrepresented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women.

Contact
Please submit your application electronically by February 28th 2015 following the link for vacancies on our homepage. The application should include:
• cover letter
• CV
• project proposal referring to the research agenda of the Department ‘Integration and Conflict’ (five
pages maximum)
• photocopies of university degrees
• name of 2-3 referees, whom Professor Günther Schlee may contact for confidential references

IMPRS ANARCHIE - PH.D. OPPORTUNITIES IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY, ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY

The International Max Planck Research School for the Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Eurasia (IMPRS ANARCHIE), a cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, offers:

Openings for PhD students
starting 1st of October 2015

The aim of ANARCHIE is to renew transdisciplinary agendas in fields where socio-cultural anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians have much to gain from cross-fertilisation. While the first and the second cohorts of PhD students are conducting research in the fields of collective identifications and religion and ritual respectively, the third cohort will explore inequality and social change, with a particular focus on economic and demographic drivers. For the purposes of ANARCHIE, Eurasia is defined as the super-continent which comprises the whole of Asia and the whole of Europe. Current projects range from Britain and Spain to Mongolia and Vietnam. The IMPRS ANARCHIE is open to students from all countries and offers an international three-year PhD program in a stimulating research environment. Highly motivated M.A. graduates in Social Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a related discipline are encouraged to apply.

Partner Institutions

The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the world’s leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) – for more than 500 years a place of scientific enlightenment, academic development and future-oriented research – is the largest university in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The historical departments of the MLU specialize in the study of transnational spaces and the analysis of social, political and cultural transformation processes in a longue durée perspective. Staff are active in systematic comparative research in both European and extra-European contexts. Archaeologists at the MLU investigate Europe and the Mediterranean region in its Eurasian context. Of particular interest are large-scale communication systems which facilitate the movement of knowledge, persons and goods.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Students will obtain their doctorate in one of the three disciplines, but will participate in a common programme organised jointly by social anthropologists (Department “Resilience and Transformation in Eurasia” of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology), historians (the Institutes for History and for the Study of the Ancient World of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg), and archaeologists (Institute for Art History and European Archaeology of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg). ANARCHIE is embedded in other institutions of the Martin Luther University, notably the University’s International Graduate Academy.
The IMPRS is in certain circumstances ready to consider joint supervision of PhD projects with colleagues based at institutions outside Halle.
The group will work together in Halle/Saale (except when undertaking field or archival research elsewhere, the costs of which will be covered).

Your Profile
See Appendices below for more detail concerning each discipline. Applicants should make their primary discipline clear in their proposal. If shortlisted, they may be invited to revise it to fit in better with the overall profile of ANARCHIE and the expertise available to provide supervision.

Financial Support
The PhD positions/grants offered here will be awarded for up to three years. (Grants are not taxed and they are free from social security stipulations).

Application documents

Applicants should send the following documentation:
Signed cover letter listing your aims and reasons for pursuing your doctorate at the IMPRS ANARCHIE
Curriculum vitae in the European Curriculum Vitae format (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/), including list of publications
Short summary (no more than two pages) of the research proposed, which should demonstrate clear links both to the applicant’s previous work and qualifications as well as to the IMPRS ANARCHIE
Copies of all relevant degree certificates and official transcripts of all academic records (B.A. and M.A.). If issued in a language other than English or German, please include translations.
Names and contact details of two referees, whom we may contact.
All application documents should be scanned in the order listed above and uploaded as one PDF file (max. 10 MB).

Application dates
Please submit your application electronically by 28 February 2015 following the link for vacancies on our homepage (click here).
Final selection will be made following interviews (provisional) in May 2015.

JOB UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM - THREE PHD CANDIDATES IN ANTHROPOLOGY OF SCIENCE (SECOND CALL)

Job description
The Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam are looking for three PhD candidates who will participate in the ERC funded research project 'Race Matter: The absent presence of race in forensic investigation', directed by Dr. Amade M’charek.
This project examines race in forensic identification by focusing on practices of giving a face to an unknown individual, a suspect or a victim. Although the face is generally viewed as the ultimate individual identifier, in practice individuality cannot be achieved without situating an individual in a population. The question is whether and how population gets translated into race.
The chief objective of this project is to explore a) how technologies of identification rely on and reiterate racial ways of understanding differences; b) how the version of race enacted in the process changes as knowledge travels across forensic sites; and c) which mechanisms contribute to the absent-presentness of race.
The three PhDs will focus on different technologies of identification through in-depth multi-sited ethnographies:
genetic facial phenotyping (e.g. the inference of facial form, hair, skin and iris colour from DNA);
craniofacial reconstruction (based on the skull) and
facial composite through sketching or photofit.
Each of these technologies will be the focus of 1 PhD project. Ethnographies will be conducted throughout the full chain of forensic evidence making from the R&D laboratories to the forensic institutes, police stations and the courtroom. Across these sites the focus is on how knowledge travels and identities get translated. The project will make an original contribution to the anthropology of science and the anthropology of race in particular, by following knowledge around and attending to the ways race gets made and unmade in practices.
Tasks
Conduct ethnographic field research;
write and complete a PhD dissertation within four years;
participate in the AISSR PhD programme;
participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities.
Requirements
PhD candidates should have the following credentials:
Relevant experience with ethnographic field research, ideally also with material semiotics;
well versed in STS theories and methods, such as Actor Network Theory and post-colonial studies;
a completed MA degree in anthropology, science and technology studies, post-colonial studies or related fields such as qualitative sociology or human geography;
excellent written and spoken English and ideally also Dutch linguistic skills;
ability and interest to work in a team.
Conditions of employment
The full-time appointments will be for a period of four years (12 months plus a further 36 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year), starting 1 April 2015. The gross monthly salary will be €2,125 in the first year and €2,717 in the fourth year, based on a full-time position (38 hours per week), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of- year allowance. This is in conformity with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
Organisation

Transatlantic history examines the circulation and interaction of people, goods, and ideas between and within any of the four continents surrounding the Atlantic basin between the time of the first Atlantic contacts in the 1400s and the present day. Situated primarily in the fields of both social and cultural history, its approaches are problem-oriented in scope, and highlighted by comparative and transnational frameworks.

Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

    New World encounters
    Atlantic empires

    Transatlantic cuisine and consumption
    Intercultural transfer and transfer studies
