Job description
In the wake of the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles on the 10th of October 2010, nationalism is high on the agenda of the governments of the five Dutch Caribbean isles. This is especially the case for the island of Sint Maarten that has the highest indexes of migrants in the Dutch Kingdom. Primary schools are conceived as important loci to socialize minds into dividing their co-inhabitants into those who belong, those who belong less, and those who are said not to naturally belong. Yet primary schools are also spaces where this exclusivist ideology can be contested. This project aims to study and compare the making and remaking of hegemonic ideologies of belonging and nationness in primary schools on the island of Sint Maarten. The heuristic assumption guiding this project is that while the politics of belonging on this island are usually framed in exclusivist nationalist terms, creating formal insiders and outsiders, these government sanctioned ideologies are cross-cut by notions of nationness that are much more open-ended, allowing for modes of inclusivity not directly related to birthright, passport, or ancestry. Employing empirically grounded methodologies and insights from cultural and social anthropology, critical pedagogies, cultural studies, theater studies, and history, this research seeks to chart how teachers and pupils negotiate these two contending ideologies and material practices in the classrooms.
Tasks
Conduct ethnographic field research;
write and complete a PhD dissertation within four years and articles to be submitted to refereed journals or edited volumes;
collaborate with supervisors and peers on research and publications;
participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities;

hold a Master’s degree in Social & Cultural Anthropology with preferably a specialization in pedagogy. Candidates who are due to graduate before September 2014 are also welcome to apply. Research Masters from related fields such as political science, sociology, social psychology, cultural studies, are also welcome to apply, but will have to do some extra coursework to get acquainted with the field of anthropology. Candidates who do not hold a Research Master‘s degree or equivalent will be required to complete a transfer program prior to the project start date. A Research Master is a 2-year Master’s program with 60 EC of methodological coursework;
excel academically, as shown in the grade transcripts and curriculum vitae;
have a firm basis in qualitative ethnographic research, digital ethnographies, mixed methods, discourse analysis;
have affinity with the Caribbean region, preferably having conducted research on the Dutch Caribbean and its Diaspora in the Netherlands;
have an excellent written and spoken command of Dutch and English;
have excellent organizational and social skills;
have the ability and interest to work in a team;
have a track record of working with children, preferably in classroom settings;
wish to pursue an academic career.
Conditions of employment
The full-time appointments will be for a period of four years (12 months plus a further 36 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year), starting 15 November 2014.
The gross monthly salary will be €2,083 in the first year and €2,664 in the fourth year, based on a full-time position of 38 hours per week, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of- year allowance, in conformity with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
Department
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the departments of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG). Research and education are carried out by special institutes. Research takes place under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute, the biggest one of its kind in the Netherlands and possibly in Europe. The broad scope and pluralism of our education and research programmes are inspired by and reflect a strong degree of internationalisation.
The AISSR and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam are looking for a PhD candidate who will participate in the NWO-funded research project ‘Imagining the Nation in the Classroom: A Study of the Politics of Belonging and Nationness on Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius’, directed by dr. JOB - PHD RESEARCHER ‘LEARNING THE NATION: RELIGIOUS AND NATIONAL BELONGING IN THE DUTCH ISLAND OF SINT EUSTATIUS’

Job description
The PhD position ‘Learning the Nation: Religious and National Belonging in the Dutch Island of Sint Eustatius’ is part of the NWO-research project ‘Imagining the Nation in the Classroom: A Study of the Politics of Belonging and Nationness on Sint
Maarten & Sint Eustatius’. This project, led by Dr. Francio Guadeloupe (University of Amsterdam), will study and compare the making and remaking of hegemonic ideologies of belonging and nationness in primary schools on the islands of Sint Maarten & Sint Eustatius.
Within this project two PhD positions are available. One, focusing on Sint Maarten, is entitled ‘Nationness as Transmigrancy: Unmaking and Remaking Hegemonic Ideologies of National Belonging in Primary Schools on Sint Maarten’ and is headed by dr. Francio Guadeloupe of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The other concentrates on Sint Eustatius and the diaspora, bearing the heading ‘Learning the Nation: Religious and National Belonging in the Dutch Island of Sint Eustatius’ and is headed by dr.ir. Yvon van der Pijl of Utrecht University (UU). The PhD candidates will work in both institutions. The candidate who studies Sint Maarten will be placed at the AISSR (UvA) and the one who will conduct the research on Sint Eustatius will be stationed at the department of Cultural Anthropology (UU).
‘Learning the Nation: Religious and National Belonging in the Dutch Island of Sint Eustatius’:
In the wake of the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles on the 10th of October 2010, nationalism is high on the agenda of the governments of the five Dutch Caribbean isles. This is especially the case for the island of Sint Eustatius that is characterized by a continual influx and outflow of people, and a strong transnational religious network within the entire Dutch Kingdom and beyond. This project seeks to understand the role that religion plays in structuring feelings for the nation under conditions of hyper mobility, and especially how such feelings of nationness are taught, learnt and experienced by younger generations within the context of the Dutch Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius. The project aims to study and compare the making and remaking of hegemonic ideologies of belonging and nationness in primary schools on the island and, moreover, how these ideologies are fabulated, imagined, brought in to being, made and unmade in a real yet imagined diasporic community, based on religion as an important ethical source. The guiding question of this project is:
What is the relationship between transnationalisms—religious and diasporic—and hegemonic imaginations of the nation on Sint Eustatius?
Employing empirically grounded methodologies and insights from cultural and social anthropology, critical pedagogies, cultural studies, theater studies, and history, this research seeks to chart how teachers, other educators and pupils negotiate diverging ideologies and material practices in the classrooms and beyond.

Tasks
Conduct ethnographic field research;
Write and complete a PhD dissertation within four years and articles to be submitted to refereed journals or edited volumes;
Collaborate with supervisors and peers on research and publications;
