POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS / ПОСТДОК

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Opportunity at the Hagley Library
The NEH-Hagley Fellowship on Business, Culture, and Society supports residencies in Hagley’s Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society by scholars who have received their doctoral degrees. Recent PhD recipients as well as advanced scholars are eligible to apply. In accordance with NEH requirements, these postdoctoral fellowships are restricted to United States citizens or to foreign nationals who have been living in the United States for at least three years. These fellowships are made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Hagley is the pre-eminent research library in the United States on business and its impact on the world. It holds more than seven miles of manuscript materials, more than 300,000 published sources, and visual items in excess of 3 million. Publications drawn from our collections provide foundational knowledge for the rise and influence of big business on politics and society as well as the cultural history of modern consumer society. Documentation of the extensive international operations of firms have provided entry for scholars exploring business and business influences in all areas of the world. While historical research is the principal purpose for most scholars, its active research grant program has funded projects from many fields in the social sciences and humanities.
Two postdoctoral fellowships are available, one of four months and one for eight months. The eight-month fellowship must be taken during the September through May academic year. The fellowships provide a monthly stipend of $4,200, amounting to $33,600 for the eight-month fellowship and $16,800 for the four-month fellowship. Fellows receive complimentary lodging in the scholar’s housing on Hagley’s property for the duration of their residency, as well as office space and the full privileges of visiting scholars, including special access to Hagley’s research collections. They are expected to be in regular and continuous residence and to participate in the Center’s scholarly programs. They must devote full time to their study and may not accept teaching assignments or undertake any other major activities during their residency. Fellows may hold other major fellowships or grants during fellowship tenure, in addition to sabbaticals and supplemental grants from their own institutions, but only those that do not interfere with their residency at Hagley. Other NEH-funded grants may be held serially, but not concurrently.
Applications are due December 1 and should be sent as a .pdf file and include, in the following order:
* A current c.v.
* A 3,000-word explanation of the project and its contributions to pertinent scholarship
* A statement of no more than 500 words explaining how residency at Hagley would advance the project, particularly the relevance of our research collections.
* A statement indicating a preference for the four or eight month fellowship.
Applicants also should arrange for two letters of recommendation to arrive separately by the application deadline. These should sent directly to Hagley.
All applications materials, including recommendations letters, should be sent to Carol Lockman, [email protected] and must be received by that date for the application to be considered by the selection committee. The committee will make decisions by February 1, with residency beginning as early as July 1. Questions regarding this fellowship may be sent to Carol Lockman as well.

The Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH) at the University of Strathclyde, the Musto Center for Drug Policy Studies (MCDPS) and the Center for the History of Development (CHD) at Shanghai University invite applications for the above Fellowships. They are aimed at candidates who will be in the final year of doctoral study or in the first two years of their postdoctoral career in the academic year 2018/9.
Successful applicants will spend up to a year working in Shanghai in the collaboration that has grown since 2012 between the two institutions in order to; conduct personal research; to produce publications and postdoctoral funding applications; and to contribute to teaching in English for undergraduates and postgraduates. The scheme follows on from a successful pilot programme in 2017/2018 and up to three Fellowships are available this year.
Further Particulars
The Fellowship will provide the costs of one return airfare and visas, and a stipend of £1000 per month, which is ample to meet accommodation and living expenses. Fellows will also have access to an additional £1,000 for research trips and/or conference attendance.

Ends on November 16, 2018
https://ucis.submittable.com/submit/48448/ucis-postdoctoral-fellowships-in-russian-east-european-and-eurasian-studies-for
The University of Pittsburgh is offering two postdoctoral fellowships—one in the arts and humanities; and one in the social sciences and/or professional disciplines—to begin in September 2019 for scholars whose work focuses on Russia, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet regions of Eurasia. These fellowships are designed to offer junior scholars the time, space, and financial support necessary to produce significant scholarship early in their careers while simultaneously building their teaching records.
The UCIS Postdoctoral Fellowships in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies are for two years, renewable for an additional (third) year. Fellows will be expected to pursue their own scholarly work and participate in the academic and intellectual activities of UCIS and REEES, as well as the department or professional school with which they are affiliated.
Each of the UCIS/REEES Fellows will teach one course in the first year, two in the second year, and two in the third year, if the fellowship is extended. The specific courses to be taught will be determined according to fellows’ interests, the needs of their departments, and REEES. At least once during the fellowship period, each Fellow will serve as the instructor for the interdisciplinary REEES capstone course, in which undergraduates undertake a major research project as part of the REEES certificate program requirements. Fellows will additionally support the Center’s annual graduate and undergraduate student conferences and other Center outreach activities.
The Center particularly seeks candidates who are ready to join the curriculum development team for the project Water in Central Asia, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and are interested in co-teaching an undergraduate course (listed in History or Political Science) as part of this initiative.
The annual stipend will be $47,476 plus benefits. The UCIS/REEES Fellows are eligible to apply for REEES Faculty Small Grants for up to $3,000 annually to support their research.
Eligibility: We invite applications from qualified candidates in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and professional disciplines who have received the Ph.D. or final professional degree from a university other than the University of Pittsburgh no earlier than December 2016. Applicants who do not have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of application must provide a letter from their department chair or advisor stating that the Ph.D. degree will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins. The fellowship may not begin before the candidate has actually received the Ph.D. or equivalent final degree in a professional discipline. Strong preference will be given to candidates whose application is supported by an agreement from a current University of Pittsburgh faculty member to serve as mentor for the candidate during the period of the fellowship.

Objectives
"Originality" is a crucial criterion of quality in the humanities and cultural studies. The specific nature of the themes belonging to the humanities and cultural sciences, though, makes it extremely difficult to say precisely what constitutes "original", "new", or "innovative". It may encompass anything that contradicts the established knowledge or generally accepted intuition; or just as well the development of a new approach to research, a new hypothesis, a new theory, observation of a new phenomenon, and discovery of knowledge gaps.
With this new funding offer the Foundation wishes to encourage scholars in the humanities and cultural studies to embark on projects of groundbreaking originality. Funding will be made available for initial exploration of the research idea.
With this funding initiative the Foundation is also treading new paths concerning the application and selection procedure – in at least three different ways: In order to expedite processing and enable decisions in between 5 to 6 months, the selection procedure has been trimmed and made as straightforward as possible. There is also an innovative review process, combining pre-selection on the part of the Volkswagen Foundation, and final selection by a panel of experts. Anonymized review ensures that the originality of the idea remains the sole selection criterion.
Scope of Funding
The funding initiative comprises two funding lines:
Funding Line 1 "Komm! ins Offene..." (Hölderlin)
The funding line addresses individual researchers, offering them the opportunity to initially explore their idea and subsequently describe it in an essay (up to EUR 80,000 EUR for a maximum of 1 year).
