of such research visits will be partly covered by a mobility grant

CONFERENCES, SUMMER SCHOOLS / КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ, ЛЕТНИЕ ШКОЛЫ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central European University in Budapest is proudly hosting its yearly graduate conference, on June 12-13th 2015. This year’s conference title is Hope and (Im)mobility in the Pursuit of Change.
People continuously contemplate motion – physical, social, spiritual or imaginary – even when they do not move, or all the more so if they feel stuck. What role does hope play in the pursuit of a better life? How do motion, emotion, and immobility enable or disable each other? Hope can be understood as a form of “cruel optimism” and a “cluster of promise”, but also as an antidote to cynicism and resignation in the face of the various contemporary instances of suffering and disenfranchisement. Whether as an aspiration to a better life, justice, and happiness, or as explanatory vocabulary generated by the belief in change, hope and the repertoire of alternative imaginaries that it summons, are often part and parcel of mobility and immobility alike. At this conference, we endeavor to tease out the implications of this juncture, its historical and cultural genealogy, and the consequences that it has for the reproduction of social inequalities and difference, and how it is addressed by their actors and by researchers alike. To this end, we propose to inquire beyond the structural conditions that prompt or limit people’s attempts to overcome geographic, social, or imaginary boundaries, and to explore the moral and affective processes that motivate and in turn are shaped by these pursuits of change. Rather than tackling these approaches separately, either favoring emic or phenomenological accounts of what sets people into motion, or accounting for the systemic causations endured by neoliberal subjects, at this conference, we encourage contributions that seek to overcome this analytical separation, and to pursue a relational analysis of hope and (im)mobilities.
We welcome abstracts for proposed presentations from advanced MA and PhD students in the social sciences that employ hope as a core conceptual instrument in an ethnographically-informed exploration of (im)mobility, whether this refers to a sense of existential immobility or to its apparent opposite, i.e. various forms of migration and its associated repertoires of mobility, attempts at social mobility, social movements, or a more widely-understood motion away from current circumstances, whether by means of imagination, morality, or visions of the afterlife. All of these, we contend, share an element of hope, and this is what we’d like to focus on, in relation to what prompts, inspires or defies it.
Some of the questions we would like to consider, though not exclusively, include:
- What shapes hope beyond late capitalist contingencies and how does hope relate to the desire for social and political change?
- What kind of practices, aspirations, and investments does hope inspire?
- How do people experience migration and social mobility in terms of hope and disillusionment?
- What kind of commonalities between people in different world regions and classes do shared or antagonistic hopes illuminate?
- How do landscapes or networks of hope function to (im)mobilize social movements?
- How do memories and hope relate to each other in the context of nostalgia or trauma?
- How can social scientists make sense of their interlocutors’ expressed or ascribed hopes, in analytically and/or ideologically meaningful ways?
Keynote speakers:
Dr. Stef Jansen, The University of Manchester
Dr. Frances Pine, Goldsmiths University of London
Offered in cooperation with the Dept. of Culture and Global Studies, Aalborg University, The Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen, the Dept. of History, University of Southern Denmark, the Graduate School of Arts, Aarhus University, and the PhD School of Culture, Language and Philosphy at CUID, RUC.
In the summer of 2015, Concepta, International Research School in Conceptual History and Political Thought, and partner institutions will organize the ninth Introduction to Conceptual History and Political Thought course (the course have previously been located at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and at Aarhus University, Denmark). An international team of distinguished scholars and visiting lecturers will help participants critically examine the chief concepts and thoughts in the humanities and social sciences from new perspectives. The goal is to illuminate the languages and arguments that are central to the operation of political and social life through the study of their migration, reception, translation, and diffusion through time and space. Analysis of concepts and thoughts involves looking at larger semantic, discursive, ideological and rhetorical settings in which they are given meaning and demands familiarity with a variety of linguistically oriented approaches to discourse and ideology, as well as to rhetoric.
The course has two main objectives. First, it introduces students to the fundamental aspects of the theory and methodology of conceptual history and political thought scholars such as Reinhart Koselleck, Quentin Skinner, John Pocock, and Michel Foucault), which they can then use as tools in their own research. Second, it explores contemporary trends in the field through case studies.
The course includes a series of lectures, a seminar and workshops. It is designed for Danish and international PhD and advanced Master’s degree students from various academic fields.
GOVERNING VALUES, GOVERNING THROUGH VALUES, GOVERNED BY VALUES? THE EUROPEAN UNION AS A RISK POLITY
JOB VACANCIES - Call for applications
 - 2 full-time doctoral positions (2015-2019)
This is a call for applications for one full-time post-doctoral position and two full-time doctoral positions on an interdisciplinary project on European politics and values based at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Brussels, Belgium). The researchers will join a team under the supervision of a scientific committee (Ramona Coman, François Foret [spokesperson], François Heinderyckx). Prospective candidates are hereby invited to submit their application as described below. The deadline for submitting applications is 10 May 2015. Successful candidates are expected to start working in Brussels on 1 September 2015.
Outline of the project: 'Governing values, governing through values, governed by values? The European Union as a risk polity'
Values at the core of European integration have been widely discussed in recent years due to several major evolutions in EU governance. The enlargements and the constitution-making process were structures of opportunities for claims to define common values susceptible to hold European countries and citizens together and to justify public action. Nevertheless, resistances showed that interpretations of these common values may differ.
References to values may have three incentives. Firstly, it may be a call to identity, memory and communicative resources in a quest for legitimization (governing through values). Secondly, it may come from the necessity to deal with ethical issues calling for normative policy choices (governing values). Thirdly, values may cause legal and political conflicts and challenge established balances of powers and regulation (governed by values). The EU has encountered the three scenarios. In each configuration, "European values" are invoked with different meanings and purposes. The hypothesis is that common patterns can still be found, turning the EU into a 'risk polity', a political system where values become a usual part of European politics either as an answer to or a factor creating uncertainties.
The project aims at a better understanding of the reasons and modalities of the emergence of "European values" on the EU agenda; of the way they create unity or division, circulate and frame different models of political community for Europe.
Work Packages
Three distinct Work Packages will take on three empirical case studies: morality politics/policies and European values; interactions between “rule of law” and regulation of/by values; debates on European values in the public sphere.
WP.A: European values in morality politics
Morality issues have multiplied on the European agenda. This category includes all policy questions related to the fundamental conception of human being, from conception, birth, sexuality, gender identity, legal and economic status of the human body, to death.  Sometimes also, the category is extended to include identity and memory issues reformulated in normative terms. Different narratives are competing to define what are the “European values” likely to frame ethical choices in all these fields. The purpose is to trace the production and trajectories of these narratives. It is also to assess whether this reference to "European values" in the political, policy and public spheres create patterns of union or dissensus, and what are the effects on the European polity.
WP.B: Interactions between “rule of law” and regulation of/by values
Over the last decades the EU has put the rule of law at the center of its internal and external policies. The aim is to examine when, how and why supranational institutions use the rule of law to legitimize the raison d’être of the EU and its internal and external policies, and how it interacts with values. Applications are especially encouraged on topics which unveil how the “EU governs the rule if law”, “through the rule of law” and “by the rule of law”. Sociological approaches dealing with the adaptation and resistances to international norms and policies as well as projects on the circulation of values are welcome.
WP.C: European Values and the Public Sphere
The European institutions are actively trying to promote, enhance and support a number of Europe-wide public spheres, or spheres that at least transcend national boundaries and, as such, defuse any build-up of nationalistic tension by identifying and enhancing shared values. An investigation into the external communication of European institutions will focus on explicit and implicit references to European values, with particular attention to policy areas with high levels of uncertainty and/or associated with divisive issues. Given the apparent failure to create any significant European public sphere, alternative scenarios will be explored, including one of increased interconnectedness among the resilient national public spheres as a way to enhance the experience of European values.
Workload
Doctoral mandates
The workload related to the doctoral mandates is mainly the realization of a PhD thesis in four years according to Belgian rules. The candidates are expected to contribute to the collective research through fieldwork, organizational activities and publications, to acquire progressively the competencies linked to a high-level scientific position and to be autonomous and team players.
Working environment and conditions
This multidisciplinary project will take place within three research teams: the Centre d'étude de la vie politique (CEVIPOL) the main political science research unit of the ULB; the Institute for European Studies (IEE), one of the oldest Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence in Europe; the Research Centre in Information and Communication (ReSIC), a large gathering of competencies in media sociology, journalism studies, textual analysis and other fields.
It will rely on a supportive interdisciplinary environment made of political scientists (R. Coman, F. Foret) and media and communication scholars (F. Heinderyckx) but also internationalists, lawyers and historians working on European integration and interactions between politics, culture and religion, etc.
The PhD candidates and the post-doc will join a dynamic international network of collaboration with other universities in Europe, US and Asia. Travels and short research stays may be included in the activities.
The hired persons will have an office and relevant administrative support at ULB. Living in Brussels for the period of the mission is required. The working contract will be managed by the university according to Belgian standards.
Profiles
Candidates for both doctoral and post-doctoral positions should demonstrate their ability to evolve in a multi-cultural environment; their expertise and/or interest for European politics; their proficiency to work in French and English. Each candidate should explain clearly his/her interest for the project and how and why he/she can contribute to the development of the collective reflection. Experience and achievements in academic research and education in areas relevant to the project will be taken into consideration at the time of selection.
Doctoral mandates
It is also to assess whether this reference to "European values" in the political, policy and public spheres create patterns of union or dissensus, and what are the effects on the European polity.
WP.B: Interactions between “rule of law” and regulation of/by values
Over the last decades the EU has put the rule of law at the center of its internal and external policies. The aim is to examine when, how and why supranational institutions use the rule of law to legitimize the raison d’être of the EU and its internal and external policies, and how it interacts with values. Applications are especially encouraged on topics which unveil how the “EU governs the rule if law”, “through the rule of law” and “by the rule of law”. Sociological approaches dealing with the adaptation and resistances to international norms and policies as well as projects on the circulation of values are welcome.
WP.C: European Values and the Public Sphere
The European institutions are actively trying to promote, enhance and support a number of Europe-wide public spheres, or spheres that at least transcend national boundaries and, as such, defuse any build-up of nationalistic tension by identifying and enhancing shared values. An investigation into the external communication of European institutions will focus on explicit and implicit references to European values, with particular attention to policy areas with high levels of uncertainty and/or associated with divisive issues. Given the apparent failure to create any significant European public sphere, alternative scenarios will be explored, including one of increased interconnectedness among the resilient national public spheres as a way to enhance the experience of European values.
LABEX POSTDOCTORAL POSITION FOR FRENCH AND INTERNATIONAL RESEARCHERS, 2015
LabEx DynamiTe invites applications for a postdoctoral position to undertake a research project on the long-term dynamics of indigenous urban forms in the New World: a comparative approach. The candidate must have an in-depth knowledge of the issues involved in the archeology of urban agglomerations and a good knowledge of geographical concepts in the same field. The duration of this position is 1 year commencing between 01 September 2015 and 01 December 2015 (according to preference). Application deadline is 26 April 2015.
Study Subject(s): Position is available to work on a project on “The long-term dynamics of indigenous urban forms in the New World: a comparative approach”.
Course Level: Position is open for postdoctoral researchers to undertake a research project.
Scholarship Provider: LabEx DynamiTe
Scholarship can be taken at: France
Eligibility: The candidate must:
– have an in-depth knowledge of the issues involved in the archaeology of urban agglomerations and a good knowledge of geographical concepts in the same field;
– be familiar with the tools used for spatial analysis and cartographic representation;
– be experienced in the acquisition and specialization of data originating from American terrains;
– have a good aptitude for collaborative research.
Scholarship Open for International Students: LabExFrench and international researchers can apply for this postdoctoral position.
Scholarship Description: Diachrony is often woven into urban fabrics. Structures erected at different times and separated by several centuries can often be observed standing side by side within the same space in certain locations. When the ‘old’ is conserved, it is often (and sometimes repeatedly) adapted to fulfil the new requirements of a given moment in time and integrated each time into a more recent urban fabric. While the diachronic approach to the analysis of the urban fabric has been well developed for the cities of the ancient world, the research on the indigenous urban forms of the New World has generally been based on a synchronous perspective. This situation is due to both the history of research and the status of the available documentation (lack of written or historical cartographic sources relating to the relevant settlements, urbanization processes that follow specific modalities and limit vertical sedimentation processes, abandonment phenomena linked with episodes of ‘collapse’, the preponderance of surface analyses). Nevertheless, the data collected in several regions of the continent (Andes, Mesoamerica, the south west of the United States) currently provide a more solid documentary basis for tackling questions concerning the transformation and/or resilience of the known urban forms based on archaeology alone. The proposed research will involve the exploration of the long-term dynamics of the transformation of the urban fabric of these agglomerations, based on concrete examples from the aforementioned American cultural areas, while comparing them with models and concepts developed in the ancient world and, more recently, the Near East. The aim of the research will be to elucidate the logics inherent to the American urban systems studied using specific approaches while contrasting them with known models in the Near East. It will involve the identification of the points of convergence and divergence between the two and the discussion of their significance in functional, socio-political and also symbolic terms, in view of the fact that the spatial organization of the old cities of the New World was strongly influenced by cosmological representations.
Number of award(s): One postdoctoral position is available.
Duration of award(s): The duration of this position is 1 year.
What does it cover? Net monthly salary is approximately EUR 2324.
Notification: The candidate(s) appointed following the assessment of the applications and interviews (which will take place during the week of 15 June 2015) will be informed of the results of the application process from 22 June 2015.
How to Apply: The application must be submitted electronically by application form. It must demonstrate that the candidate fulfills the requirements indicated in the position profile (specified tasks and skills).
Scholarship Application Deadline: The deadline for the submission of applications is 26 April 2015.
