DOCTORAL STUDENT
TRANSNATIONAL DYNAMICS IN QUALITY ASSURANCE AND EVALUATION POLITICS OF BASIC EDUCATION IN BRAZIL, CHINA AND RUSSIA (BCR)

Position announced on: Jun 19, 2014
Apply at latest on: Aug 12, 2014
Fixed-term: Oct 20, 2014 - Dec 31, 2017

Employer:
Faculty of Behavioural Sciences
Institute of Behavioural Sciences
The University of Helsinki is among the world’s top research universities, as well as the oldest and most diversified university in Finland. It comprises 11 faculties spread over four campuses. Located at the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, the Institute of Behavioural Sciences is one of the departments conducting high-quality basic and applied research in education, cognitive science, psychology and speech sciences. The Institute is responsible for graduate and postgraduate teaching in these areas, and for many Master’s programmes. The Helsinki University Centre for Research and Development of Higher Education also functions at the department.

The KUPOLI research unit contributes to one of the three focal areas of the faculty, “Education, Society, and Culture”. Under the direction of Professor Hannu Simola, the unit covers the problematics of policymaking, politics, interaction and governance in basic and higher education, focusing particularly on crossing and intertwining of global, regional, national and local levels, and the effects on schools and families. KUPOLI is responsible for multiple on-going research projects, and is also part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence: Justice through Education.
With funding from the Academy of Finland (2014–2017), and with the education departments at the universities of Turku and Tampere as consortium partners, KUPOLI has launched a new project, BCR, to explore how the intertwinement of different levels from the local to the global constructs the transnational local dynamics in quality-assurance politics in Brazil, China and Russia.

We are looking for someone who is keen to undertake PhD studies at the University of Helsinki, and to join our research endeavour.
In Brazil we are working in co-operation with the GEPETO (Grupo de Estudos sobre Política Educacional e Trabalho) research group of Centro de Ciências da Educação (CED) at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), in collaboration with Professor Eneida Shiroma.
An ideal PhD project in Finland lasts for four years. The PhD student will spend about one year training in Finland, one year doing fieldwork in Florianópolis (Brazil), and a further one to one-and-a-half years in Finland finalising the project. After this, the project team will help the researcher to find funding for finalising his or her doctoral dissertation. The PhD student will work in a multinational research group with established and early-stage researchers from different continents. The research will consist of ethnographic observation in schools located in Florianópolis, and semi-structured interviews with key local actors.
We are looking for:

-          A native or near-native speaker of Portuguese who is also a fluent English speaker. This is a strict requirement. (Knowledge of Finnish, Russian or Chinese will be an advantage).

-          An applicant with a Master’s degree, preferably in political science, sociology, education, or other social sciences. A Master’s degree is usually a precondition for achieving PhD status at the University of Helsinki.

-          Previous engagement in questions related to education policy, quality assurance or evaluation, and knowledge of the education system and policies in Brazil, Santa Catarina state and Florianópolis will be advantageous.

-          Applicants must be ready to move to Finland and to spend one year in Florianópolis doing fieldwork.

-          We encourage both female and male applicants.
We offer:

-          A full-time position in our project starting preferably in October 2014 and ending at the latest on 31.12.2017.

-          Supervision of your PhD dissertation by established Finnish researchers: the required studies and the finalisation process will take place at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

-          The starting salary is based on the salary system at Finnish universities (approximately €2,258 per month).
The application is two-phased. For the first phase please provide, in English:

-          A cover letter relating your research to the BCR project and the described tasks (1-2 pages)

-          Your CV, including a list of publications

-          An English abstract of your Master’s thesis

-          A letter of recommendation (if possible)
Shortly after the first-phase deadline applicants called for the second phase in August are asked to write a research plan setting out how they will conduct their share of the BCR research. This plan will also be used to apply for PhD status at the department (deadlines for these in 2014 are September 9 and November 5). Please note that the work contract is contingent on applying for and receiving the right to undertake PhD studies at the University of Helsinki.
Please send your first-phase applications via email to the Registry of the University of Helsinki addressed to Jaakko Kauko at the KUPOLI research unit, with the reference “BCR application”. The email address is [email protected]. Deadline for applications is August 12, 2014.

CONFERENCES, SUMMER SCHOOLS / КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ, ЛЕТНИЕ ШКОЛЫ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Dumpster Diving and Sustainability: Managing the Limited Resources
of Culture
Princeton University, October 17-18, 2014
Annual Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference
Princeton University
Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures
Keynote Speaker: Catriona Kelly (University of Oxford)
“You can't imagine how stupid the whole world has grown nowadays.
The things that scribblers write.”
― Nikolai Gogol, Dead Souls
Dumpster Diving and Sustainability: Managing the Limited Resources
of Culture is an interdisciplinary conference dedicated to marginal
and outmoded art in all of its manifestations and returns in Slavic,
Eastern European, and Eurasian cultures. The conference aims at
exploring our repeated turn to the afterlives of ‘bad’ or exhausted
cultural forms as a way to cope with and interpret artistic and
social changes.
In his literary studies, Iurii Tynianov famously pointed out a
particular tendency of literary evlotion: a literary or artistic fact
that appears worthless at one historical moment may, at another,
become a productive element of an aesthetic order. Taking
Tynianov’s observation as a point of our departure, we want to
understand the overall function and impact of ‘bad art’ on
contemporary artists and societies, as well as on our own disciplines,
both as a fetishized avant-garde commodity and as a recontextualization
of historical forms/norms.
Our contention is that ‘bad art’ is a ubiquitous feature of artistic
production with its own intrinsic laws. With this in mind, this
conference proposes a critical interrogation of the ‘bad.’ The goal
is not so much to deconstruct or vindicate ‘bad art’ but rather to
acknowledge the ‘bad’ as an inalienable value that continues to
sustain itself through various means of cultural recycling.
We invite submissions from humanities and social science scholars.
A short selection of sample topics below indicates some potential
areas of inquiry:
On the Invention of Bad Writing (Vasilii Rozanov, Valentin Kataev)
Art as Commodity: Lubok, Feuilleton, Pulp
The Aesthetic Education of Men: The Prostitute as Guardian in
Literature and Film (Crime and Punishment, Resurrection, Interdevochka,
Wiktor Grodecki’s Czech Films)
Gastronomical Phenomenology (Bakhtin, Soldier Chonkin, Soldier Švejk)
Author as ‘Holy Fool’ from Venedikt Erofeev to Kirill Medvedev
Authorship and Pastiche (Prigov, Kabakov)
The Importance of Being Earnest: Gogol’s Selected Passages from
 Correspondence with Friends
Serialized Novels, TV Series, and the Epic Eurovision, Balkan Beats,
and the Construction of National Identity in Post-Socialist Europe
Conference Format
The goal of the conference is to provide graduate students with the
chance to present their work to senior scholars in the field and to
receive as much constructive feedback as possible. All papers will
be made available prior to the conference through the conference
website. At the conference, each presenter will be given 15-20
minutes to present his or her paper, followed by commentary by
the panel discussant and open discussion.
Submission Details
We welcome submissions from graduate students across disciplines.
Please submit abstracts (200 words or less) to
[email protected]. In addition, please attach
a short CV including current departmental affiliation, name, and
e-mail. The deadline for submissions is July 20, 2014. Please submit
all files as Word documents.
We will be able to provide travel subsidies for the conference
participants, as well as lodging for the nights of October 16 and 17.
JOB - FOUR PHD CANDIDATES IN ANTHROPOLOGY OR CLOSELY RELATED DISCIPLINE
Job description
The AISSR and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam are looking for PhD candidates who will participate in the ERC-funded research project ‘Problematizing “Muslim Marriages”: Ambiguities and Contestations’, directed by Prof. Dr. Annelies Moors.
This ethnographic project employs the term ‘Muslim marriages’ in a broad sense, as it emerges in public debate and as a form of marriage practice that at least one of the parties concerned considers Islamically valid. It investigates both when and how particular marriage forms have become subject to public debate and what kinds of new (or new uses of old) marriage forms and wedding celebrations are emerging in everyday life. Depending on context, this includes, for instance, unregistered, visiting, temporary, interreligious, transnational, and polygamous marriages. Who are participating in these marriage forms, and how are they performed? Who are able to shape these new forms? How and by whom are such marriages authenticated, authorized or contested as Muslim marriages? Under which conditions do particular forms of Muslim marriages emerge and become licit while other forms become devalued and marginalized? The wider question this project addresses is what economic, political, religious and cultural work these new Muslim marriages do. What subjectivities and socialities do they produce? How do they shape economic relations, group boundaries, religious ethics, and cultural forms? Theoretically, this project intends to contribute to fields such as: Islam, public debate, legal practices, and everyday life; globalization, marriage and reproduction; the family, economy, and intimacy; the body, gender, and sexuality; religion, ethics and aesthetics.
PhD candidates will be based in Amsterdam at the AISSR and will conduct longer term ethnographic fieldwork, preferably in Indonesia, Lebanon, Morocco, the Gulf States and the Balkans. Candidates with strong arguments to do fieldwork elsewhere may also apply.
Tasks
Conduct ethnographic field research;
Write and complete a PhD dissertation within four years and submit articles to refereed journals or edited volumes;
