Applications are invited for a PhD position in the area of Social Sciences within the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the Department of Anthropology of University of Amsterdam. The full-time appointment will be for a period of three years (12 months plus a further 24 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year), starting 1 June 2015. The PhD candidate will be based in Amsterdam at the AISSR and will conduct up to 12 months of fieldwork in Ecuador. The deadline for applications is 15 April, 2015.

Scholarship Description: The AISSR and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam are looking for a PhD candidate who will participate in the ERC-funded research project ‘The Social Life of State Deportation Regimes: the case of Ecuador’, directed by Dr. Barak Kalir.

Scholarship Description: In fall 2014, SHSS launched a new graduate program – M.A. in Political Science and International Relations (MAPSIR). The MAPSIR is the first world-class graduate level political science and international relations program in Kazakhstan. It is taught in English by internationally recognized faculty drawn from North America and Europe. The program is structured similar to top-rated Master’s programs in the universities in North America. However, unlike most top-rated MA programs, MAPSIR is fully funded; its students receive monthly scholarships as well as free on-campus housing, based on need.

The Giorgio Cini Foundation is offering three short term scholarships for studies focused on the Benno Geiger Archive. The scholarships lasting one month are offered to Italian and foreign graduates, postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers under the age of 35 on 31 January 2015. The scholarships must be used by staying at the “Vittore Branca” International Center for Studies of Italian Culture in the period from November 2015 to April 2016. The application deadline is 30 June 2015.
Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded for studies on “Benno Geiger” archive and on other literary archives which is preserved and developed on the Island of San Giorgio, as well as on other literary archives held by the Foundation.

The scholarships are in accordance with Elsa Geiger Ariè’s will and are associated with the “Premio letterario Benno per la traduzione poetica”, an annual poetry translation prize, set up to commemorate her father.

What does it cover? Each scholarship worth 2,000 euros will be divided as follows:
-a gross sum of 1,000 euros as a contribution to general expenses, travel and board. This sum will be paid in a single installment at the end of the one-month period by bank or postal order only. Non-Italians who are awarded a scholarship must obtain an Italian tax code, otherwise the funds cannot be paid.
-one month’s accommodation free of charge (worth 1,000 euros) in the Vittore Branca Center Residence on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore as well as participation in its cultural events and the free use of its facilities (library and photo library, tutorships, accommodation with telephone and cable Internet connection, self-catering facilities, laundromat, food dispensers; common lounge, music room, fitness area and terrace)

Notification: The winners of the scholarships will be selected by the jury of the Premio Geiger when it convenes to choose the winner of the prize for the 2015 edition in September. At the end of the proceedings, the scholarship winners’ names will be communicated in writing and will be officially announced during the prize-awarding ceremony at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice.

Description
The Institute for European Global Studies is an interdisciplinary research institute at Switzerland’s oldest university, the University of Basel. With an established study program on the MA level and a doctoral program in the planning stage, the Institute develops new concepts and methodologies designed to reveal the close interconnectedness between Europe, Asia and Africa across cultural, geographic, and linguistic borders and the consequences of such entanglements on the global and the local level.
The Institute for European Global Studies welcomes applications for 3 Visiting Fellowships (three months in the academic year 2016) within European Global Studies with focus on “Scaling Regions“. Fellows will benefit from the excellent academic conditions and exchange with international colleagues. They will find both the freedom and the inspiration necessary to work on their research project.
Eligibility
The Institute for European Global Studies welcomes applications from researchers who are interested in investigating agencies and actors in global contexts as well as in adopting a conceptual approach beyond the nation state. Projects should fit the general research perspective of the Institute and at the same time engage with the topic of Scaling Regions which covers transterritorial concepts and border-crossing methodologies.
The Institute particularly welcome applications from candidates with a background in history, political science, law, economics; however, interested researchers from other fields who feel that they can contribute to the larger questions investigated at the Institute are also eligible. Women scholars are strongly encouraged to apply.
Fellowship
Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of CHF 3,000. The fellowship will also cover travel costs to and from Basel and three months accommodation at the University’s guesthouse.

UNU-WIDER PHD INTERNSHIPS
Our PhD Internship Programme gives registered doctoral students an opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research, and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest.
PhD interns typically spend 2-3 months at UNU-WIDER and return to their home institution afterwards. During their time in Helsinki, PhD interns prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. PhD interns may also have the opportunity to publish their research in UNU-WIDER’s working paper series.
Selection criteria
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme and have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates working in other social sciences may apply but should keep in mind that UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills. Preference is given to applicants who are living or working in developing countries and who are at later stages of the PhD.
Financial assistance
UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER), and a monthly stipend of EUR 1,600 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of their internship.The programme does not cover expenses related to dependents.
Application procedure
UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the PhD Internship Programme twice each year. Deadlines for submission of applications are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 EET each year. Short-listed applicants will be informed by email of the final decision within four weeks of the closing deadline. The selected applicants must confirm their decision to take up UNU-WIDER's offer two weeks after being contacted.
