OPENINGS FOR PHD STUDENTS
starting 1st of October 2017
The projects of the fourth cohort of the IMPRS ANARCHIE will be devoted to the topic of
Representing Domination
Doctoral students shall investigate how various modes and processes of communication and contestation with regard to (legitimate) domination are determined by practices of representation and by the (usually heterogeneous and often conflictual) dynamics that have shaped these practices of representation through space and time. Students will tackle varying forms of representation, approached as a basic form of human social interaction, by examining and comparing their spatio-temporal variability in past and present Eurasia. We especially invite projects which are dealing with the following topics and their relation to the issue of domination:
Representation of power
Representation of space and collective identities
Representation of status, rank, prestige
Representation through roles
Representing the past
Representing the dead
The aim of ANARCHIE is to renew transdisciplinary agendas in fields where social and cultural anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians have much to gain from cross-fertilisation. For the purposes of ANARCHIE, Eurasia is defined as the super-continent which comprises the whole of Asia and the whole of Europe and the Mediterranean. Previous projects have ranged from Britain and Spain to Mongolia and Vietnam. The IMPRS ANARCHIE is open to students from all countries and offers an international three-year (with the possibility of extension) PhD program in a stimulating research environment. Highly motivated students possessing a Masters degree in Socio-Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a related discipline are encouraged to apply.
Partner Institutions
The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is one of the leading centres for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many projects also have applied significance and political topicality. The Department “Resilience and Transformation in Eurasia” has particular expertise in economic and social transformations in the former socialist world as well as in East and South-East Asia.
The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) – for more than 500 years a place of scientific enlightenment, academic development and future-oriented research – is the largest university in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Among the wide-ranging thematic and regional foci of the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology of the MLU, the connectivity of the Indian Ocean World has been of special significance in recent years. The historical departments of the MLU specialize in the study of transnational spaces and the analysis of social, political and cultural transformation processes in a longue durée perspective. Staffs are active in systematic comparative research in both European and extra-European contexts. Archaeologists at the MLU investigate Europe and the Mediterranean region in its Eurasian context. Of particular interest are large-scale communication systems which facilitate the movement of knowledge, persons and goods.
The Programme
Students work towards their doctorate in one of the three disciplines, but participate in a common programme organised jointly by social anthropologists (Department “Resilience and Transformation in Eurasia” of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology together with the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology of the MLU), historians (the Institutes for History and for the Study of the Ancient World of the MLU), and archaeologists (Institute for Art History and European Archaeology of the MLU). ANARCHIE is also embedded in other institutions of the MLU, notably the University’s International Graduate Academy.
The IMPRS is in certain circumstances ready to consider joint supervision of PhD projects with colleagues based at institutions outside Halle, and also a formal Cotutelle agreement with another university.
Except when undertaking field or archival research elsewhere (the costs of which will be covered), students are expected to work in Halle and participate in the life of their respective institutions, especially during the academic terms.
Your Profile
See Appendix below for a list of the IMPRS ANARCHIE Principal Faculty in each discipline. Applicants should make their primary discipline clear in their proposal. If shortlisted, they may be invited to revise the proposal to fit in better with the overall profile of ANARCHIE and the expertise available to provide supervision.
Financial Support
The PhD positions are generally awarded for 3 years, with the possibility of two six-month extensions.
Application documents
Applicants should send the following documentation:
1) Signed cover letter listing your aims and reasons for pursuing your doctorate at the IMPRS ANARCHIE
2) Curriculum vitae in the European Curriculum Vitae format (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/), including list of publications
3) Short summary (no more than two pages) of the research proposed, which should demonstrate clear links both to the applicant’s previous work and qualifications as well as to the IMPRS ANARCHIE
4) Copies of all relevant degree certificates and official transcripts of all academic records (B.A. and M.A.). If issued in a language other than English or German, please include translations
5) Names and contact details of two referees, whom we may contact.
Deadline for Applications
Please submit your application electronically by April 30th, 2017

PH.D. OPPORTUNITIES IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY, ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY
The International Max Planck Research School for the Anthropology,
Archaeology and History of Eurasia (IMPRS ANARCHIE), a cooperation
between the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and the Martin
Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, offers:
Openings for PhD students
starting 1st of October 2017
The projects of the fourth cohort of the IMPRS ANARCHIE will be devoted
to the topic of Representing Domination and will explore how various
modes and processes of communication and contestation with regard to
(legitimate) domination are determined by practices of representation
and by the (usually heterogeneous and often conflictual) dynamics that
have shaped these practices of representation through space and time.
Students will tackle varying forms of representation, approached as a
basic form of human social interaction, by examining and comparing their
spatio-temporal variability in past and present Eurasia.
The IMPRS ANARCHIE is open to students from all countries and offers an
international three-year PhD programme (with the possibility of
extension) in a stimulating research environment. Highly motivated M.A.
graduates in Social Anthropology, Archaeology, History or a related

Postdoctoral Research Associate in International Economic History at the University of Glasgow (2 posts)
Project description
The successful candidates will be part of the ERC-funded project The Making of a Lopsided Union: Economic Integration in the European Economic Community, 1957-1992 (EURECON) led by Dr Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol. They are expected to begin on 1 September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter (a few months’ delay is negotiable if need be).
The positions will be for 2 years, starting from September 2017 (or later if so negotiated). In addition to their salary, Post-Doctoral Researchers will receive an allowance for research missions and participation to international conferences of at least £2,500 per year.
Description of the EURECON project
The goal of EURECON is to explore European policymakers’ views about how to make the organisation of the European Economic Community (EEC) fit for the creation of a single currency, from 1957 to 1992. It is often said that the euro has faults of conception. But how did this happen? How was the euro made in such a way that it nearly completely overlooked some critical aspects of monetary unions? The assumption is that in the run-up to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, European policymakers just did not think properly about how to make the Euro work. Was this really the case? Did European policymakers really overlook the economic foundations of European monetary union?
The project aims to examine European policymakers' debates and proposals, understand the reasons for their success or failure, identify the dynamics of political and economic trade-offs and compromises, shifting priorities, and alternative approaches that were abandoned at the time but recycled later. The project focuses on five work packages: macroeconomic policy coordination, fiscal transfers, capital market integration, banking harmonisation/supervision and the deepening of the common/single market. The project will examine the origins of the issues that are currently bedevilling the European Union (EU) by investigating the period between the creation of the EEC in 1957 and the decision to create a European single currency in 1992.
The Postdoctoral Research Projects will focus on the role and influence of non-state, non-EEC actors and factors in the above discussions.
Postdoctoral Research Projects
Interested applicants should focus specifically on the role of one of the following actors/factor:
- Commercial banks: Commercial banks were central actors in the development of European economic integration, in particular with regard to capital market integration, regulation/supervision, and the development of the common/single market. Did they support the creation of a common market in banking? Did they adopt specific lobbying strategies within their respective member states and in Brussels? How did they view the possible future creation of a monetary union in Europe?
- Big business (other than banks): The implementation of the common/single market, the issue of EEC fiscal transfers, and macroeconomic policy coordination had an impact on the conduct of business in Europe. Did big business consider that these developments would improve their environment, in creating more business opportunities, easier financing and trade? The Roundtable of Industrialists famously lobbied for the Single Market Project; did big business aim to actively support or oppose other developments at different time periods?
- Trade unions: Macroeconomic policy coordination, EEC fiscal transfers, and the development of the common/single market had an important impact upon labour relations. How did trade unions try to influence European economic policymaking? In particular, how did they promote European social policies and how did they cope with the challenges induced by European economic integration in a globalising world? The rise of unemployment in Europe from the 1970s as well as the reflections mentioned above about the introduction of an EEC-wide unemployment benefit provided an important points of interest for trade unions.
- The spread and influence of economic ideas on the evolution of European economic cooperation and integration: Many economic ideas have influenced and competed over the development of European economic integration, including German ordo-liberalism, French planning, and neo-liberalism. Recent studies have shed light on the rise of neo-liberal politics in the evolution of thinking about deregulation and the free movement of capital. How did economic thinking evolve in the EEC and how did these influences permeate policymaking at the European level? This topic would more specifically focus on the intellectual history dimension of the economic integration of Europe by looking at one of these schools of thought. How did these ideas spread among European policymakers? How did these ideas change over time? What was their actual influence?
To apply for the position, applicants are required to submit (www.glasgow.ac.uk/jobs, Job Ref. 016726):
- Their CV,
- The details of three referees
- A cover letter explaining how their research experience fits the EURECON project,
- A one to two-page description of the research they would like to undertake during their tenure, clearly mentioning: the scope of their project, the state of the literature, and the archival sources they would like to use.
Please upload your cover letter and one to two-page research document as ONE document.
Candidates must be fluent in English. A good command of another European language would be an advantage.
Candidates should have a PhD in History (or related discipline), or be close to completion.
Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview to present their research proposal. It is anticipated that the interviews for these positions will take place in May 2017.
Interest applicants may contact Dr Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol ([email protected]) for informal enquiries.
Closing date for applications is 17 April 2017.

THREE POSTDOCTORAL NOMIS FELLOWSHIPS
eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image at the University of Basel
The center invites applications from postdoctoral researchers and assistant professors in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences for three one-year Nomis Fellowships beginning 1 September 2017.
Since 2005, eikones has served as a center for graduate and postgraduate research on images. The center is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of images as instruments of human knowledge and cultural practices. It investigates the functions and effects of images throughout history and in our contemporary society from analytical and systematic perspectives.
The Nomis Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports groundbreaking research projects related to how images act as models or paradigms in scientific and aesthetic contexts. We are interested in the fundamental ways images serve as instruments for making complex structures visible and accessible to interpretation. In both aesthetic and experimental settings, images often assume an exemplary character, aiding epistemic and learning processes. They fulfill evidential, didactic, and symbolic functions, and thereby produce different forms of knowledge. Relevant topics of research might consider, for example, the history and theory of imaging techniques in the natural sciences; the ideals and stereotypes that shape social contexts and political discussions; or the formation and dissolution of canons, iconographies, character types, and styles in the arts.
On the methodological side, the projects should be rooted in a specific research field, and reflect on the relation between their individual discipline and image studies.
The fellowships will allow outstanding young scholars and scientists to pursue their research free from teaching and administrative obligations. They provide a generous salary, travel funds, and access to excellent academic infrastructure. Applications will be selected based on scholarly achievement and relevance to the topic of images as models. Fellows are expected to be in residence at eikones in Basel and to participate in select institutional events.

The Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites interested scholars to apply for the 2017-18 cycle of William R. Eadington fellowships, which facilitate research into many aspects of both gambling and Las Vegas at UNLV Special Collections in the University Libraries.
In the 2017-18 academic year, the Center will award two types of Eadington fellowships:
· Four-week Resident Fellowships offer a $3,000 stipend and can be completed any time before September 1, 2018.
·Two-week Visiting Fellowships offer a $1,500 stipend and must be completed by June 30, 2018.
All Eadington fellows will complete a residency at Special Collections; deliver a public talk (which is recorded as part of the Center’s podcast series); and contribute a brief paper to the Center’s Occasional Paper Series.
Anyone currently in a graduate program (with a preference for Ph.D. students who are ABD) or serving as a university faculty member is eligible to apply. Applicants primarily represent the fields of history, economics, English, history, sociology, and anthropology, though those from all disciplines with relevant research interests are encouraged to apply. Suggested fields of research include Las Vegas history, the history of gambling, and comparative studies of gambling in literature, history, and society. Before applying please learn as much as you can about the scope of the collections—priority is given to applicants who specify collections they plan to use. Visit the Center website for more information about the program, past fellows, and the collections.
Priority will be given to applicants who specify use of three collections: the Katherine Spilde Papers on Tribal Gaming, the Eugene Christiansen Papers on Gaming, the Gary Royer Papers on Gaming, and the Harrah’s Entertainment Corporate Archives. These collections provide new evidence and historical context surrounding the rapid expansion of casinos and legalized gambling in the United States between 1970 and 2010, and, thanks to a work funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), are now available for research, with enhanced finding aids and organization.
To apply for the 2017-2018 academic year, please submit the following by July 17, 2017:
1. A cover letter briefly introducing yourself, indicating clearly whether you are applying for the Resident or Visiting Eadington fellowship, and when you would prefer to schedule your residency
2. A short (2-3 page) description of the proposed research, with details on secondary research already done and sources to be used at UNLV
3. A full curriculum vitae
4. For graduate students, one letter of recommendation that evaluates your past research and current project
All materials must be sent electronically; the first three items should be sent in a single pdf file, with the letter of recommendation sent by the recommender directly to the center’s director, Dr. David G. Schwartz, at [email protected]. Successful applicants will be notified by August 12, 2017.
Awarded since 2007 and renamed in honor of William R. Eadington in 2013, the Eadington Fellowships are intended to foster scholarship focused on gambling issues and to encourage the use of the rare and unique collections at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Eadington (1946- 2013) pioneered the academic study of gambling, both in Nevada and worldwide. He was the first holder of the Philip J. Satre chair in Gaming Studies, a professor of economics, and founding director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARCHIVAL RESEARCH VISITS AT THE RESEARCH CENTRE FOR EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES (2017)
Scholarship I Target groups and conditions
The friends of the Research Centre issue scholarships for archive and research stays at the Research Centre for East European Studies in Bremen. These scholarships are for master students, postgraduates, or post-docs. On the one hand, the scholarships serve to conduct individual research in the archive at FSO and/or with the aid of research databases of FSO’s department of Political science and Economics. On the other hand, scholarship holders are obligated to support our archive through sorting those materials, they are working with, and to provide descriptions. The stay is supported with a travel allowance of 300,- EUR, as well as up to 500,- EUR for a maximum stay of four weeks. Successful applicants will be able to plan their stay between May and December 2017 – in consultation with the responsible departments at FSO. During the scholarship, you are obligated to stay in Bremen.
Background I Information
In the application form, the project proposal has to refer to specific archival collections at the Research Centre, or specific research data in the department of political science and economics. The FSO archive consists of personal documents, photographs, and works of art by dissidents and emigrants from the former Soviet Union, Poland, and former Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century. Moreover, it accommodates samizdat and tamizdat papers, as well as a newspaper collection. The department of politics and economics possesses a comprehensive collection of documents by political parties and civil society after the end of socialism and a set of research databases on protests in post-soviet states. Those reflect moments of protest through diverse source material. For further information, see this website, which provides overviews for our collections, several guides to archival collections, as well as our online archival catalogue.
Application I Deadlines and Procedures
Please fill out the Application Form in German, English or Russian, and send it as a .pdf-file to the friends of the Research Centre for East European Studies, [email protected], until 31 March 2017. We will decide about the grants on 18 April 2017. Please download our fact sheet.
