PHD IN SLAVIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Applicants who wish to start graduate studies in the fall semester should apply by December 1 to receive priority consideration for fellowship funding.

Funding for graduate study at USC is generous but competitive, and deadlines for application matter. We continue to accept applications through March for the following fall semester, but the chance receiving funding diminishes significantly after January. Our financial support is intended to fund the entire course of PhD study (see Financial Support) and we admit only those students whom we are able to fund.

Admission Requirements
An undergraduate major in Russian or its equivalent is a prerequisite for graduate work in the Slavic department. It is generally expected that the undergraduate major will have included four language and four literature courses at the upper division level. If your background does not include this training, please be aware that, if you are accepted into the graduate program, you may be required to do supplemental study in addition to graduate course work.

Funding decisions are usually made from January through mid-April.

Application Checklist
All applications for admission to graduate study at the University of Southern California are received and processed by the University's Office of Graduate Admissions.

Please visit the University's Office of Graduate Admissions web site at http://www.usc.edu/admission/graduate/apply/

You will need:

The application form, filled out on line at Graduate Admissions website.
The university application fee of $85.
GRE (Graduate Record Examination) results. GRE should send your scores directly to USC Graduate Admissions.  Although there is no mandated minimum score for admission, the exam is required for all applicants.
Undergraduate and (where applicable) previous graduate transcripts; these should be mailed to USC's Office of Graduate Admissions. International students should also send an English translation of their transcripts
Three letters of recommendation. These need to be uploaded by each recommender individually.
In addition, send the following to the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, THH 255, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-4353

       6.  A writing sample or samples, in English and/or in Russian (e.g., a paper you wrote for an advanced undergraduate course).
       7.  A 1-2 page statement of interest. This should describe your scholarly interests, how our program fits in with these interests, and your future academic and professional plans.

ACADEMIC COORDINATOR

for the International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment (IMPRS-REMEP), starting 1 March 2016.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The varied and interesting duties associated with the position of Academic Coordinator overlap at the juncture between research and administration. The successful applicant will support and assist the speaker and steering committee of the IMPRS and promote the external visibility of the programme. Duties will also involve the on-going organisational requirements of the IMPRS, assisting doctoral students in academic, administrative and practical matters, design and implementation of the curriculum, as well as the co-ordination of the applicant selection procedure, the organisation of workshops and the preparation of publications. The coordinator herself or himself should spend half time of the position on own research. Therefore, research interests related to the REMEP programme are required.

The School
The Graduate Programme of the IMPRS-REMEP addresses pivotal issues concerning the maintenance and preservation of social order and social control. These fundamental questions take on, particularly in the context of conflict and post-conflict societies, a new meaning, where, in the search for solution strategies, traditional approaches to conflict regulation (mediation) can be fallen back upon. These steps partially co-exist alongside long-established customary concepts of retaliation, supplementing established punitive models and reasoning or, to a certain extent, replacing them completely.

The Graduate Programme of the IMPRS-REMEP addresses issues of maintenance, construction, negotiation and preservation of social order and human security. The research agenda of REMEP combines the fields of anthropology with criminology and (international) criminal law, legal history and public international law. The focus of analysis is directed towards conflict and conflict settlement procedures which are informed by the basic concepts of retaliation, mediation, and punishment. Research topics range from conflict resolution in egalitarian societies to conflict management procedures in (post-) conflict societies. Travelling technologies of ordering, new arrangements of governance, networks of cooperation as well as the impact of rights-based approaches and human rights, religious law and tenets of faith in the transformation of ordering practices proved to be fields of research which allow new insight into the overall question about the normative power and the social working of the basic concepts of REMEP.

Besides the MPI for Social Anthropology, a number of other higher education facilities and research institutes are involved in the programme. These are the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, as well as the University of Freiburg and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
For fuller information consult http://www.eth.mpg.de/2952301/department_schlee, http://www.eth.mpg.de/2951631/department_foblets, http://www.eth.mpg.de/2951246/remep

Your Profile
Requirements for the position are a university degree (preferably with a doctorate in the field of social anthropology, sociology, or jurisprudence, and research experience within the subject fields of the IMPRS, experience in research management and excellent German and English language skills. In addition, the successful applicant will possess outstanding communication skills, a high degree of flexibility, the ability to work under pressure and lastly, enjoy working in an international environment.

Our Offer
Employment will be on a full-time contractual basis. Remuneration will be awarded in accordance with the German public service. The position is awarded for 2 years, with the possibility for an extension. The workplace is Halle (Saale).
The Max Planck Society strives to employ more persons with disabilities and explicitly encourages applications. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in under-represented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women.

THE PRINCETON SLAVIC DEPARTMENT OFFERS THE PH.D. DEGREE IN RUSSIAN LITERATURE.

The program provides students with a firm foundation in their major area as well as the opportunity to explore related fields, for example: comparative literature, literary theory, and other Slavic languages and literatures.

The aim of our graduate program is to further interest, knowledge, and scholarship relating to Russia and Slavic Central Europe, primarily through the cultural humanities. To this end we urge our students to explore new intellectual paths and approaches, having first provided them with a strong background in the Russian literary tradition, an introduction to major schools of theory, and the opportunity to conduct research abroad.

Princeton's graduate program is small, with usually no more than two students entering each year. This enables us to offer graduate students accepted into the program a support package for the entire five years required to complete the degree. Princeton provides a scholarly, small-town atmosphere in close proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia.

Admitted graduate students are offered a stipend of full tuition and fees together with a five-year fellowship that includes summer salary. The program of study is flexible enough to allow students with different backgrounds the opportunity to explore areas of special interest (which may extend beyond the Slavic Department and even beyond Princeton). Meetings with professors — both formal and informal — are frequent, and advanced graduate students work closely with their dissertation advisors.

Our students play a central role in the life of the Department in ways that hone their professional skills – teaching language and/or literature, helping select speakers, participating in the dissertation colloquium, and organizing conferences. They also take active part in the profession, presenting papers at national and international conferences and publishing in journals in the field.

Candidates accepted into the program receive full funding (full tuition, health insurance, and living stipend) for five years. As part of this award – and as part of their professional training – students normally teach at least two semesters of literature, language, or both, usually after the general examinations.

Students are in residence full-time during the first two years, doing course work and preparing for the general examination which usually takes place at the end of the second or the beginning of the third year. Upon passing the examination, students begin work on the dissertation and receive supervised training in undergraduate teaching together with classroom experience. In the fourth year students may opt to conduct dissertation research abroad. The fifth year is spent in residence teaching and completing the dissertation.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS / ПОСТДОК

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW, MAHINDRA HUMANITIES
CENTER, HARVARD UNIVERSITY

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites
applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships
in connection with the Center's Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation seminar on the topic of violence and
non-violence. The call to arms and the politics of
non-violent resistance are often represented as
polarities. There are, however, many gray areas
that define the dialectical relationship between
violence and non-violence. The Mellon seminar,
in which the postdoctoral fellows play a central
role, explores a different dimension of the
interrelationship between violence and
non-violence-as disciplinary formation,
historical event, ideological or ethical
discourse-each year.

Following on the themes of war (2014-15) and
everyday violence (2015-16), the seminar will
focus on slow violence in 2016-17.
