PHD FUNDING, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

Applications are invited for PhD research topics
that focus on artistic re-enactments of performances
from across the former communist and socialist
countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern
Europe in recent artistic practice. There are
numerous examples of artistic re-enactments
across the region, providing scope for a range of
dissertation topics. Projects can include
comparative studies, for example, of the relevance
of re-enactments in one local tradition versus that
of another; or single-country studies of a number
of re-enactments being staged in one context.
Dissertations will address the following research
questions: what are the various functions of
artistic re-enactments of performances in Eastern
Europe? How do these functions compare with
current understandings of re-enactment in the
West? How can re-enactments be used to access a
lost or inaccessible history (such as performance
art in Eastern Europe)? Also welcome are
proposals that consider revisiting culturally
relevant or historically significant places by artists
or within the context of artistic re-enactments.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic
merit. Individuals with a strong research
background in the field of Eastern European
contemporary art and/or performance art, from
either an art history or visual culture background,
are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have
the necessary language skills needed to undertake
the proposed research, and should consider
funding sources for travel to conduct field
research abroad if it is necessary to the proposed
project.

The project is funded by a University of Aberdeen
Elphinstone Scholarship, which covers the cost of
tuition fees, whether Home, EU or Overseas, and
will be awarded through an open competition.
Interested applicants should contact the lead
supervisor in the first instance, with a project
proposal.
Deadline for all applications: 30 May 2016

“INCUBATOR” | FUNDING OPPORTUNITY & CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Incubator 2017 @ Stanford University

Advancing Early-Career Scholarship in the Digital Age

Incubator, a new initiative powered by Dissertation Reviews, is seeking proposals for its inaugural early-career residency program, to be held in 2017. Incubator focuses on identifying and supporting innovative, intellectually rigorous, and engaging projects that harness digital tools and human-centered organization to advance early-career scholarly communication and early-career scholarly infrastructure.

In collaboration with the DHAsia program at Stanford University, the inaugural 2017 Incubator will focused on Asia broadly writ, including East, South, Southeast, and Inner/Central Asia.

About Dissertation Reviews

Founded in 2010, Dissertation Reviews set out to accomplish one goal: to expose the scholarly world to cutting-edge PhD dissertations across the Humanities and Social Sciences, and to foster unprecedented levels of engagement with early-career scholarly communities.

In 2016, we announced the accomplishment of this goal.

Over the course of six intense years, DR profoundly changed the way scholars think about dissertations and early-career scholarship. Once limited to an exceedingly narrow readership — one’s committee, family, and close colleagues — the dissertation as a genre was unleashed. In one of the most widely read reviews, for example, thousands of visitors learned of Catherine Bronson’s Imagining the Primal Woman: Islamic Selves of Eve, with many more visiting the 1000-plus dissertation reviews, reflections, and archive reviews published since 2010.

Never before had dissertations been considered a genre worthy of “review” in such a thorough and public way. DR took up this challenge, and in the process, helped give rise to a new global community. Our readership rapidly grew to over 1,000,000, with visitors hailing from the US, UK, India, Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, Turkey, the Philippines, France, Italy, Israel, and dozens of other countries. Our team of editors, moreover, has itself hailed from more than two dozen countries.

About Incubator

In 2016, Dissertation Reviews will complete the process of becoming a registered Not-for-Profit organization — yet another exciting development in DR’s history. This transformation enables us to support independent scholarly efforts that build upon the legacy of DR, especially ones that take our legacy in new and unpredictable directions.

Incubator is the project development wing of the Dissertation Reviews Non-Profit Organization: a seed grant initiative that seeks out and helps develop innovative, intellectually rigorous, and engaging independent projects that harness digital tools and human-centered organization to advance early-career scholarly communication and early-career scholarly infrastructure — podcasts, consortia, web platforms, and more — through the provision of seed funding and managerial advice. Directed by Tom Mullaney (Stanford University) and Jennifer Lambe (Brown University), Incubator will support up to 3 projects each year, with the manifestations of the project being syndicated on the main Dissertation Reviews website to its millions of readers.

About DHAsia | Our 2017 Collaborators

Entering its second year, DHAsia is a cutting-edge initiative at Stanford University focused on the intersection between Digital Humanities and the study of South, Southeast, East, and Inner/Central Asia. Directed by Tom Mullaney (Associate Professor of Chinese History), DHAsia is supported by the Stanford University Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA), the Stanford Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS), the Stanford Confucius Studies Institute, as well as a number of other departments and programs on campus. For more information, please visit www.dhasia.org .

ELIGIBILITY

Early-career scholars working on Asia are eligible to submit one (1) project each for review by the Incubator-DHAsia steering committee. For this application, “early-career” is defined as any scholar whose career stage is between (a) the rank of advanced, post-orals, ABD PhD student currently enrolled in a PhD program; through (b) the rank of pre-tenure Assistant or Associate Professor (recent PhDs are eligible as well, regardless of employment status, as are Postdoctoral Research Fellows or the equivalent). For the 2017 Incubator series, eligible applicants must work on Asia, primarily or substantially, and disciplines and time periods are welcome to apply. Future years will focus on different regions and/or themes.

SUPPORT AND TIMEFRAME

Up to three (3) project applications will be selected for the 2017 Incubator program. The project director for each project will be invited to Stanford campus during either Winter or Spring 2017 for an intensive 2- to 3-day residency featuring: (a) a 45-minute research talk; (b) a hands-on clinic introducing your project to faculty, students, librarians, archivists, technologists, and invited guests; and (c) a schedule of one-on-one meetings with key members of the Stanford community and Silicon Valley.

In collaboration with DHAsia, Incubator will provide the invited resident an honorarium of $500, as well as all travel, lodging, and meals.

The deadline for applications is June 15, 2016. Materials should be submitted via email to [email protected] and must include:

Cover letter summarizing the project, and explaining how it advances cutting-edge scholarly communication, research, teaching, and/or infrastructure in your field.
CV
Two references including contact information (please do NOT request or provide letters of recommendation – but references may be contacted as part of application review process)
Applicants will be informed of the committee’s decision by no later than August 15, 2016.

For applicants whose native language is not English, there must be evidence that the applicant is fluent in English so as easily to conduct research, discuss work with colleagues, and make a public presentation, although the ultimate product of the research may be written in the applicant's native language. For English speakers who seek to do research in the Library's foreign language collections, there must be evidence that they have a command of the relevant language or languages at the level requisite for serious research.

Expectations
Kluge Fellows will give one public presentation of their research and provide a final report on their research and its results. Two copies of any ultimate product of this research (book, article, film, website, etc.) should be sent to the Library of Congress. Kluge Fellows will also have opportunities to meet with Library specialists and curators, and on occasion with Members of Congress and Congressional staff.

Awards
Up to twelve Kluge Fellowships will be awarded annually by the Library of Congress. Awards will be announced in the spring of the year following that in which the application is due. For overseas Fellows, award letters will address visa questions and include a form which must be filled out and submitted to the Library of Congress to determine tax residency status and the potential for U.S. Federal income tax withholding. Scholars who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who do not already have a U.S. Social Security number will be required to obtain either a Social Security or tax identification number, as appropriate, at the start of their fellowship at the Library, regardless of the taxability of their income under this program or exemption under a treaty with the United States. Transportation arrangements are the responsibility of each Fellow. Housing is not provided by the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress does not supply health insurance coverage but can provide contacts with commercial providers. Because the United States does not have a national health plan, if a selectee becomes ill or injured during the term of appointment, there is no provision for care.

INTRODUCTION TO CONCEPTUAL HISTORY

Summer school for PhD students and advanced level Master’s degree students
8 August to 19 August

University of Helsinki

In the summer of 2016 the eleventh annual summer school “Introduction
to Conceptual History” will take place in Helsinki, at the University
of Helsinki and its Centre for Nordic Studies. The summer school is
jointly organized by Concepta: International Research School in
Conceptual History, The Political Concepts Standing Group of the
European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR), and the research
projects “The Political Rhetoric of Isms” and “Asymmetries in European
Intellectual Space at the University of Helsinki”. An international
team of distinguished scholars and visiting lecturers have been
engaged to stimulate the participants into a critical discussion
around key concepts in politics, as well as in the social sciences and
the humanities.

The summer school seeks to familiarize younger scholars with theories
and practices of conceptual history and the study of political
concepts, opening various perspectives on political theorizing and
studying political practices. The aim of conceptual history is to
analyze the ways in which concepts and ideas are operationalized in
political and social life through the study of their migration,
translation, reinterpretation and diffusion through time and space.
Conceptual analysis involves looking at larger semantic, discursive,
ideological and rhetorical settings in which concepts are given
meaning, and demands familiarity with a variety of linguistically
oriented approaches to discourse and ideology, as well as to rhetoric.

An international team of distinguished scholars and visiting lecturers
have been engaged to stimulate the participants into a critical
discussion. The course will introduce the fundamental aspects of the
theory and methodology of conceptual history (discussing the work of
scholars such as Reinhart Koselleck, Quentin Skinner, John Pocock,
Michel Foucault, and Pierre Rosanvallon), which the students are
encouraged to use as tools in their own research. On this basis, a
focus will be put on different cases of conceptual change, emphasizing
the inherently political character of language and rhetoric in the
usage of concepts. Further, contemporary trends in conceptual history
will be explored through case studies presented by the students as
well as visiting lecturers.

The course includes lectures, seminars and workshops.

We welcome PhD and advanced Master’s degree students from various
academic fields.

RE-ORDERING DIVERSITY: HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE IN THE CONTEXT OF FORCED MIGRATION AND DISPLACEMENT
4 - 8 July 2016

Summer School

Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany)

Application Deadline: 30 April 2016

Forced migration and displacement are controversially debated issues in current public and political discourse. A rhetoric of threatened order manifests itself alongside attempts to frame the situation as manageable, or even as a chance.

Considering the resulting challenges that politics and practitioners are facing, the need for a more thorough academic engagement becomes apparent. On the one hand, it is paramount to collect a corpus of data which will enable a better theorization of the issues at hand; on the other hand, academics have to take responsibility as the ‘informed consultants’ politicians and practitioners are in need of.

The Summer School will take place from 4th until 8th July 2016 at the University of Tuebingen, as a cooperation between the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 923 “Threatened Order – Societies under Stress”, the Center for Gender and Diversity Research, and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Göttingen).

We welcome applications from PhD students and early career researchers from social and cultural anthropology, sociology, political science, and related fields of cultural studies and social sciences. The aim of the Summer School is to learn about and discuss relevant topics and academic approaches through a dialogue between different agents from the field: academics, practitioners, and refugees.
                                                                                               *************

Both those people categorized as ‘refugees’ and the societies receiving them are extremely diverse. Due to a lack of academic expertise and theorization, this aspect has so far been only marginally acknowledged in the German-speaking context. In the field, this often results in irritations and complex conflicts between agents, in which a perceived threat against one’s own group dominates the discourse.

In collaboration with researchers from diversity studies, and taking into account the CRC’s model of ‘threatened order’, the summer school will deal with these issues and work towards finding answers to the following questions:

Which forms of diversity are articulated in the context of forced migration and displacement?

What new forms of diversity emerge?

Which mechanisms of order do involved agents and institutions apply (‘re-ordering’)?

The Summer School provides a platform for dialogue between different agents from the field (researchers, practitioners, refugees), who, together, will develop hypotheses and further questions. The goal is to find ways to theorize and frame forced migration and displacement in terms of questions of diversity, humanitarian assistance and ‘threatened order’, and especially to integrate and specify topics from ongoing and emerging research projects.
Aside from a close cooperation between the research institutes, involving practitioners and refugees has a high priority within our concept. The idea is to pursue research not about them, but collectively as a joint effort.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS / ПОСТДОК
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
POSTDOC IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND GENDER STUDIES (0.75 FTE)
Job description
In post-9/11 Western societies and academic debates, the notion that religion and women’s emancipation are fundamentally conflicting has regained plausibility. Consequently, women’s deliberate religious conversions are a pertinent academic, religious and socio-political issue. This NWO-funded research project ‘Beyond ‘Religion versus Emancipation’. Gender and Sexuality in Women’s Conversions to Judaism, Christianity and Islam in Contemporary Western Europe’, will apply interdisciplinary methods to study women’s processes of conversion as the acquisition of new religious subjectivities in which gender and sexuality play a formative role. The project hypothesises that gender equality and women’s sexuality are ‘battlefields’ on which converting women negotiate their position and subjectivity. It assumes that the conversion process is notably acted out in the context of public debates and religious prescriptions that highlight women’s positions and sexualities in adversative directions. By studying female conversion as an ongoing and multi-layered negotiation between secular and religious gender discourses, the project develops an innovative model of interpretation, based on a diversification of notions of choice, embodiment and religion.
You will carry out the subproject ‘Women’s Conversion in Comparative Religious Studies Perspective: the Formation of Religious Gender Scripts ‘, which provides a conceptual framework for the comparative analysis of women’s conversion narratives and practices in Western Europe. Specifically, the focus is on how ‘religious gender scripts’ are created and the ways in which they inform notions and practices of women’s conversion. It analyses how these scripts are currently being transformed through specific conflicts by which religious communities distance themselves from mainstream secularised society.
You will work under the supervision of the project leader prof. dr. Anne-Marie Korte and publish four articles in four years. In addition, you will be part of the core research team consisting of two post-doctoral researchers and a PhD candidate. As such, you will contribute to, and participate in, expert meetings and workshops related to the project. A contribution to the synthesis (edited volume) and a joint special issue (with the other post-doctoral researcher) are part of your responsibilities as well.
You will be based at the Utrecht Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, which provides a relevant, stimulation and internationally oriented research environment. The Department is part of the Faculty of Humanities which also houses one of Europe’s most advanced interdisciplinary teaching and research programmes in Gender Studies.
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
Interest in interdisciplinary work and societal challenges is considered an advantage.
Offer
You will be offered a part-time Postdoc position (0.75 fte), initially for a period of 12 months. Upon good performance, the contract will be extended for another 36 months (four years in total). The starting salary ranges between € 3,168 and € 3,400 (gross per month on a fulltime basis depending on experience and qualifications (salary scale 10).
Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. More information: working at Utrecht University.
DIGITAL FACE -RESEARCH PROJECT LOOKING FOR MASTER'S AND PHD STUDENTS
Digital Face (DIFA) Digital Face project is part of the Digital Humanities research programme funded by the Academy of Finland for years 2016–19. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach into understanding how social identity (i.e., face as a broader concept than the physical face) is constructed, maintained, and managed in digital environments. Our perspective is twofold:
we want to understand how faces are transmitted into digital environments
how face is maintained in social interactions.
We're thus interested in both the face as a medium for interaction, as well as in the face in its metaphorical use with wide connotations and cultural meanings.
At the moment, the project team consists of prof. Tapio Takala and prof. Risto Sarvas at Aalto University, and prof. Janne Seppänen and dr. Asko Lehmuskallio at University of Tampere. Asko is the principal researcher.
Researcher Wanted
We are looking for a doctoral student or postdoctoral scholar to join our project. As a researcher, your task would be to contribute your own angle and expertise. In other words, we are primarily looking for a talented person, who would like to do top-level international research and write a world-class dissertation/publications as part of the project.
You should understand how software and digital systems work, and how they are designed and built. You should also understand how technology shapes and affects our social lives, and how people’s identities and relationships are mediated by technology. Programming skills are highly appreciated, as well as a profound interest in what makes us human.
We can offer you a full-time position in a stable four-year project, a ground-breaking multi-disciplinary topic, and a team of distinguished researchers. Your primary location would be in Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo.
Please send your questions and/or your application (cover letter, an example of your writing/programming skills, CV, list of publications) to [email protected]. This call for applications closes May 15th. The work would start in September 2016 the latest.
Feel free to forward this call to anyone.
Master's Thesis in Human-Centric Research on Digital Interaction
We are looking for a master's thesis worker join our team. As a thesis worker in the project, your task would be to plan, run, and write up your thesis. You would, of course, do this as a member of our team with us helping you all the time. The thesis would be around the topic of what different digital services and platforms people use to interact with other people, and how do they maintain their social identity in them (the concept of face). The research would be based on a quantitative and qualitative data gathered from a group of people.
The research would include user trials with tracking software and interviewing the same people. You would also analyse the data together with interview data to better understand how and why people use different technologies. The thesis outcome would be a design for an application for people to better understand their social world. This work would be a great basis for any task or job as a human-centric designer, developer, innovator or researcher.
You should understand how software and digital systems work, and how they are designed and built. You should also have an understanding on how technology shapes and affects our social lives, relationships and identities. Programming skills are appreciated but not critical. More important is a profound interest in what makes us human.
We can offer you a full-time or part-time position for 6-8 months. The details depend on your preferences. We can offer you also a world-class research environment and a ground-breaking multi-disciplinary topic. Your primary location would be in Aalto University in Otaniemi, Espoo.
SUMMER SCHOOL SPACE, MOBILITY AND TRANSFORMATION
Summer School Goals The PhD Summer School is embedded in the research and network project Fluid mobilities for cities in transformation: spatial dynamics of marshrutkas in Central Asia and the Caucasus (Marshrutka Project). Within the scope of the project, we want to gain insights into transformation processes through the lens of changing mobility practices. We are inviting doctoral students from diverse disciplines, such as geography, urban studies, anthropology, social and political sciences, and others, interested in the questions of space, mobility and transformation. The summer school is designed to encourage transnational interdisciplinary discussions, and provide high-impact feedback and networking opportunities for its participants. We offer [1] thematic key-note speeches, [2] training sessions on research methods, [3] an opportunity to share, discuss, and receive feedback for ongoing research projects, [4] mobility-themed field trips. Besides offering a unique and understudied thematic focus, we offer a cozy and thorough working environment and networking opportunities. The summer school invites five projectfunded PhD students, ten external PhD students (please see information on funding opportunities below), ten project partners from Kyrgyz, Kazak, Tajik, Russian, Georgian and German academic institutions, international and local key-note speakers, trainers and stakeholders. Such a high student/professor ratio and a diverse regional and thematic expertise of the participants will ensure an opportunity for constructive in-depth discussions.
About the Marshrutka Project
Minibuses locally known as marshrutkas are a common sight in urban and rural landscapes of Central Asia and the Caucasus. The Marshrutka project deals with the role of the marshrutka mobility phenomenon in the production of post-Soviet urban spaces, in and beyond Central Asia and the Caucasus. It provides an empirically founded contribution to the larger discussion on post-Soviet transformation, and fosters a still under-represented view on post-Soviet transformation, highlighting – through the lens of the marshrutka phenomenon – the bottom-up and everyday emergence of new orders in the fields of economy, morale, urban development and migration. The project is carried out by means of five complementary PhD projects under supervision of academic project partners; in addition, a post-doc based at the IfL in Leipzig is charged with a cross-cutting research project and ensures the conceptual coherence of the project. The project sees its outcomes in terms of a solid and sustainable transfer of knowledge and methods, from German partners towards the academic institutions in the target regions, and vice versa, strengthened local research capacities and infrastructures, and long-lasting research cooperation.
Thematic Focus
We understand mobility as a mode of space production. Space has become a prevailing concept for speaking about ordering of social relations and urban life. Bourdieu, de Certeau, Lefebvre and many others used spatial approaches to analyse the relations between social and material, the structure of societies, the organisation of the urban every day. The end of last century witnessed a “mobility turn”, implying that mobility is crucial to a social production of space (cf. Urry 2002, 2004, 2007; Edensor 2004; Jensen O 2009; Jensen A 2011). At the same time, social sciences lack appropriate vocabulary for a description of mobile objects constituting space.
While the project-related PhD research is focusing primarily on marhsrutka mobility, external participants are welcome to present papers or the following (and related) themes:
Shared taxis and paratransit in the global North and South;
Mobility and informal practices;
Bottom-up social orders, entrepreneurship and transition;
Space and mobility in post-Soviet cities and beyond;
Flexible Openings
The summer school is primarily designed for doctoral students. However, in exceptional cases, the applications from post-doctoral and early career researchers, as well as MA students will also be considered. The knowledge of the post-Soviet region is welcome but not necessary. The working language of the summer school will be English. For selected lectures, translation from Russian will be provided.
Submission guidelines
The application should include a motivation letter, a short CV and an abstract (not more than 500 words) of the paper you are planning to present at the summer school. Please submit the application to Lela Rekhviashvili ([email protected]) by April 30, 2016.
Travel grants
The participation of the Summer School is for free. We offer travel grants up to 400 EUR to ten selected applicants. The sessions of the Summer School will be held daily from August 14 – August 18, 9am until 6pm, and full attendance is required. The participants of the Summer School will receive a certificate of attendance.
ACADEMIC COORDINATOR
for the International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment (IMPRS-REMEP), starting as soon as possible.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The varied and interesting duties associated with the position of Academic Coordinator overlap at the juncture between research and administration. The successful applicant will support and assist the speaker and steering committee of the IMPRS and promote the external visibility of the programme. Duties will also involve the on-going organisational requirements of the IMPRS, assisting doctoral students in academic, administrative and practical matters, design and implementation of the curriculum, as well as the co-ordination of the applicant selection procedure, the organisation of workshops and the preparation of publications. The coordinator herself or himself should spend quarter time of the position on own research. Therefore, research interests related to the REMEP programme are required.
The School
The Graduate Programme of the IMPRS-REMEP addresses pivotal issues concerning the maintenance and preservation of social order and social control. These fundamental questions take on, particularly in the context of conflict and post-conflict societies, a new meaning, where, in the search for solution strategies, traditional approaches to conflict regulation (mediation) can be fallen back upon. These steps partially co-exist alongside long-established customary concepts of retaliation, supplementing established punitive models and reasoning or, to a certain extent, replacing them completely.
The Graduate Programme of the IMPRS-REMEP addresses issues of maintenance, construction, negotiation and preservation of social order and human security. The research agenda of REMEP combines the fields of anthropology with criminology and (international) criminal law, legal history and public international law. The focus of analysis is directed towards conflict and conflict settlement procedures which are informed by the basic concepts of retaliation, mediation, and punishment. Research topics range from conflict resolution in egalitarian societies to conflict management procedures in (post-) conflict societies. Travelling technologies of ordering, new arrangements of governance, networks of cooperation as well as the impact of rights-based approaches and human rights, religious law and tenets of faith in the transformation of ordering practices proved to be fields of research which allow new insight into the overall question about the normative power and the social working of the basic concepts of REMEP.
Besides the MPI for Social Anthropology, a number of other higher education facilities and research institutes are involved in the programme. These are the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, as well as the University of Freiburg and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. For fuller information consult http://www.eth.mpg.de/cms/de/research/d1/, http://www.eth.mpg.de/cms/de/research/d3/, http://www.remep.mpg.de .
Your Profile
Requirements for the position are a university degree (preferably with a doctorate in the field of social anthropology, sociology, or jurisprudence, and research experience within the subject fields of the IMPRS, experience in research management and excellent German and English language skills. In addition, the successful applicant will possess outstanding communication skills, a high degree of flexibility, the ability to work under pressure and lastly, enjoy working in an international environment.
Our Offer
Employment will be on a full-time contractual basis. Remuneration will be awarded in accordance with the German public service. The position is awarded for 2 years, with the possibility for an extension. The workplace is Halle (Saale).
The Max Planck Society strives to employ more persons with disabilities and explicitly encourages applications. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in under-represented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women.
