USES OF LITERATURE - PHD-FELLOWSHIP IN THE LITERARY WORKS AS ACTORS - A NEW APPROACH TO LITERARY STUDIES

The Department for the Study of Culture invites applications for a PhD-fellowship in the Literary works as actors – a new approach to literary studies. The position is available starting February 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position expires January 31, 2020.

Applicants are expected to outline an individual research project on Literary works as actors – a new approach to literary studies. The project is expected to be comparative and to examine how contemporary literary works are engaged in a variety of literary, scientific, political and cultural negotiations and in what sense they can be conceived as actors.

The project is related to Professor Rita Felski’s appointment as a Niels Bohr Professor for the period 2016-2021, and the adjacent project, Uses of Literature: The Social Dimensions of Literature. The project is financed by Danish National Research Foundation.

The goal of this project is to develop new frameworks and methods for exploring the many social uses of literature. Drawing on both the humanities and social sciences, it seeks to offer richer and more capacious accounts of what literature does and why it matters. How do we capture the distinctiveness and dynamism of art works as they move through the world?  How can we do justice to the varied and often unpredictable ways in which people engage with literature and the many facets of aesthetic experience? In what ways do literary works inspire attachments, forge affiliations, or help people make sense of new social realities? Topics to be addressed include the relations between literature and the emotions, new forms of literary history, the field of narrative medicine, how literature speaks to changing structures of social class, and the relations between fictional and non-fictional narratives. The focus on the program is on Anglo-Saxon, German and Scandinavian literature.

The specific PhD-project will be part of a research group analyzing Literature and the social - New literary history and ANT (PI: Professor Anne-Marie Mai). Actor-network-theory offers a promising framework through which to rethink categories of literary history. The widening of the themes and functions of literature since World War II has opened new relations to culture, science and society. We need to recognize not only the effects of large-scale history on literature, but also how texts interact with the world around them, transmitting but also reshaping ideas and dispositions, uniquely engaged both as effect and as cause. This recognition is especially timely as literature is becoming ever more imbricated with other artistic and popular media, and with the sciences. Based on selected works of recent European and American literature, the project will examine how ANT can contribute to post-national and cross-media literary historiography, emphasizing the entanglement of literature with other salient networks.

Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic, international and cross-disciplinary research group under the academic leadership of Professor Rita Felski (University of Virginia & University of Southern Denmark) and Professor Anne-Marie Mai (University of Southern Denmark) in cooperation with Professor Peter Simonsen and Professor Klaus Petersen (University of Southern Denmark). The working language of the project is English and applicants are expected to participate actively in seminars and workshops in the project. Applicants are expected to include an individual research plan within the framework of the overall program Uses of Literature.

Research plan outlining individual research project addressing the above mentioned profile should be included in the application.

USES OF LITERATURE - PHD-FELLOWSHIP IN THE LITERATURE, UNEMPLOYMENT AND PRECARIOUS LABOUR

The Department for the Study of Culture invites applications for a PhD-fellowship in the Literature, unemployment and precarious labour. The position is available starting February 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position expires January 31, 2020.

Applicants are expected to outline an individual research project on Literature, unemployment and precarious labour. The project is expected to be comparative and to study contemporary works of literature about the unemployed or short term contract employed. What literary strategies are used to convey such precarious lives, and how may these strategies inspire particular forms of empathy, recognition or attachment?

The project is related to Professor Rita Felski’s appointment as a Niels Bohr Professor for the period 2016-2021, and the adjacent project, Uses of Literature: The Social Dimensions of Literature. The project is financed by Danish National Research Foundation.

The specific PhD-project will be part of a research group analyzing Narratives of Use - Literature and precarious life (PI: ProfessorProfessor Peter Simonsen). This WP centers on the relationship between literature and a new social class that is emerging in Europe and globally: ’the precariat’. This term references people facing multiple insecurities concerning work, health, housing, social relations etc., who are suffering from rising inequalities associated with globalization and neoliberalism. This WP will explore how narratives of the precariat circulate in social life, what kinds of recognition or misrecognition they engender, and what new attachments or forms of solidarity they make possible.

Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic, international and cross-disciplinary research group under the academic leadership of ProfessorProfessor Rita Felski (University of Virginia & University of Southern Denmark) and ProfessorProfessor Anne-Marie Mai (University of Southern Denmark) ) in cooperation with ProfessorProfessor Peter Simonsen and ProfessorProfessor Klaus Petersen (University of Southern Denmark. USES OF LITERATURE - PHD-FELLOWSHIP IN THE COMPLEXITIES OF RECOGNITION AS A LITERARY CONCEPT

The Department for the Study of Culture invites applications for a PhD-fellowship in the Complexities of Recognition as a Literary Concept. The position is available starting February 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position expires January 31, 2020.

Applicants are expected to outline an individual research project On the Complexities of Recognition as a Literary Concept. This dissertation will develop a dialogue between concepts of recognition in political theory and literary studies and consider the ways in which contemporary fiction represents and reflects on the complexities of recognition.

The project is related to Professor Rita Felski’s appointment as a Niels Bohr Professor for the period 2016-2021, and the adjacent project, Uses of Literature: The Social Dimensions of Literature. The project is financed by Danish National Research Foundation.

How do they entice us, enlist us, surprise us, seduce us? And what formal mechanisms, affective links, or social bonds are in play? This WP explores the “stickiness” of attachment and reflects on its affective, social, and material aspects. What does it mean to become attached to an art work? What mechanisms are in play? And how do these attachments speak to the social aspects of literature and its potential to engender recognition, empathy, or other forms of allegiance?

Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic, international and cross-disciplinary research group under the academic leadership of Professor Rita Felski (University of Virginia & University of Southern Denmark) and Professor Anne-Marie Mai (University of Southern Denmark) in cooperation with Professor Peter Simonsen and Professor Klaus Petersen (University of Southern Denmark). POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS / ПОСТДОК

USES OF LITERATURE - POSTDOC ON LITERARY ANALYSIS APPROACH TO WELFARE SEMANTICS

The Department of History invites applications for a position as Postdoc on literary analysis approach to welfare semantics. The position is available starting January 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position expires June 30, 2018.

Applicants are expected to outline an individual research project on literary analysis approach to welfare semantics. Combining literary analysis with social science methods, this project will analyze why some ideas/narratives/concepts become hegemonic and sticky and others do not. This has been a theoretical challenge to scholars studying the role of ideas and political semantics. Why do Scandinavians love the welfare state whereas “welfare” in the US context triggers negative images of dependency, un-deservingness, and even totalitarianism?

The specific PhD-project will be part of a research group studying  links between the fictive and the non-fictive (PI: Professor Klaus Petersen). The overall aim of this work package is cross-disciplinary fertilization between literary studies and narrative approaches to the social and the political. These approaches include: the ‘role of ideas’-literature in political science, conceptual history and welfare semantics. The focus will be on methodological innovation: How can literary methods qualify analyses of society in the broader sense? How do political ideas or social semantics evoke feelings of recognition, inclusion or justice? Why are some concepts and ideas “sticky” whereas others are soon forgotten?

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in history, social science or literary studies.

Successful applicants will become part of a dynamic, international and cross-disciplinary research group under the academic leadership of Professor Rita Felski (University of Virginia & University of Southern Denmark) and Professor Anne-Marie Mai (University of Southern Denmark) in cooperation with Professor Peter Simonsen and Professor Klaus Petersen (University of Southern Denmark. The working language of the project is English and applicants are expected to participate actively in seminars and workshops in the project. Applicants are expected to include an individual research plan within the framework of the overall program Uses of Literature.

Further information is available from Professor Klaus Petersen at phone: +45 40227629, email: [email protected].

Application, salary and conditions of employment etc.
Employment as Postdoc is temporary (max. 4 years). Employment stops automatically by the end of the period.

To qualify for the position you must have completed a PhD-degree by the application deadline.

The jobdescription will be mainly research, additionally will be teaching to a certain extent and other tasks to a limited extent.
The university will determine the distribution between the various tasks. The extent of the tasks can vary over time.

An upgrade of pedagogical qualifications is not part of the position. Thus employment as Postdoc cannot stand alone as a qualification for later employment as associate professor/senior researcher.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty.

As part of the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, an interview may be applied.

Appointment to this position may also include teaching obligations in regard to related degree programmes.

USES OF LITERATURE - POSTDOC ON ALIGNING LITERARY ANALYSIS WITH NEW POLITICAL HISTORY

The Department of History invites applications for a position as Postdoc on Aligning literary analysis with new political history. The position is available starting January 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position expires June 30, 2018.

Applicants are expected to outline an individual research project on Aligning literary analysis with new political history. The project should compare approaches from literary analysis with traditions within history and social science such as new political history (Neue Politikgeschichte), conceptual history, discourse analysis or the role-of-ideas literature in social science. These approaches share a focus on texts but conceptualize them in different ways (as actor, as communication, as path dependency). The project should have a theoretical-methodological focus aiming at developing cross-disciplinary frameworks for the analysis of “political” texts.

Position:      Non-Tenure Track Faculty

Overview

The University of Maryland is offering two Postdoctoral positions in the fields of Digital Humanities and African American History and Culture. Eligible candidates will have completed a doctoral program in African American Studies, Art History, United States Labor History, United States or Global Migration Studies,  Digital Media, Historical and Cultural Visualization, or a related field in the past five years. These are full-time, professional-track faculty appointments for two years connected to our Andrew W. Mellon-funded initiative “Synergies among Digital Humanities and African American History and Culture” ( AADHum). The 12-month salary for these positions is $70,000, including full benefits. Additional funding is available for conference travel and professional development.

The AADHum postdocs in the fields of Digital Humanities and African American History and Culture provide exciting opportunities to contribute to a major interdisciplinary initiative at one of the nation’s highest-ranked public research universities, as well as to gain skills and knowledge related to emerging, innovative areas of research and teaching. With supervision and guidance provided by the leadership of the AADHum initiative, the postdocs will work closely with faculty and researchers in their field of expertise, for example, with the Center for Global Migration Studies, or with the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora. Postdocs will each participate in and help coordinate the Digital Humanities Incubator training sessions for faculty and students;  provide mentorship and research leadership to graduate assistants working in support of the project; and design a two-semester course sequence that engages first-year students with research questions involving African American labor, migration, and artistic expression that are tractable to digital tools and methods. These questions will be pursued through use of our testbed collections, including onsite, hands-on work at the Center for Global Migration Studies, the Driskell Center, and the George Meany Memorial AFL-CIO Archive.

The ideal candidates will have both relevant academic training as well as experience with content management and digital humanities project development. Postdocs will be expected to continue to develop their ongoing research within a field of study compatible with the AADHum initiative. Postdocs will work in close collaboration with faculty and staff from the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) and the Arts and Humanities Center for Synergy, the two core centers for the AADHum initiative. One of the premier digital humanities centers in the world, MITH will provide mentoring in best practices for data curation, data modeling, project development, and training, along with working knowledge of advanced methods and tools for data analytics. Launched in late 2013, the Center for Synergy has already been recognized as on the cutting edge of public humanities, successfully conceptualizing and building collaborative projects between Arts and Humanities scholars, other disciplines and external communities.  The center received one of the first NEH Humanities in the Public Square grants for its Baltimore Stories project, in which humanists work alongside citizens to examine the roles of narratives in the life of a major American city. The Center for Synergy will provide mentoring in best practices for developing vibrant intellectual communities, both in the form of innovative curriculum and in the form of engaging public programming, from the micro-level of reading groups to the macro-level of a national conference.

Opportunities for archival work in the rich research collections at the University of Maryland will also be key components of the postdoc experience. The archives of the David C. Driskell Collection document the creation and curation of the largest academic holdings of African American art and art from the African diaspora. The George Meany Memorial AFL-CIO archives are the official repository for records of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), selected records of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), and the merged American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).

3 POSTDOCTORAL (EARLY CAREER) RESEARCH POSITIONS IN THE FIELD OF LAW & ANTHROPOLOGY

at The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology -- a leading centre for research in social anthropology. Common to all research projects at the Max Planck Institute is the comparative analysis of social change; it is primarily in this domain that its researchers contribute to anthropological theory, though many programmes also have applied significance and political topicality.
Positions are in the Department of Law & Anthropology
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
In today's world values and norms are circulating ever more intensely between various societies and cultures. This intensification calls for an in-depth assessment of the ways in which different normative orders and systems of morality coexist at various levels of decision-making worldwide. Research carried out in the Department focuses on legal issues raised by this coexistence, it privileges studies that are based on the in situ study of practices, procedures, institutions and concepts examined within and across normative legal orders. For this round of positions, preference will be given to research proposals that focus on the European context. Topics of particular interest include: (1) the increasing interconnectedness of law and religion; (2) divergent notions of justice in the face of cultural diversity; (3) the ethnographic study of the workings of institutions of social regulation (in, inter alia, the fields of migration; kinship, family and household; neighborhoods; identity issues; property claims and their protection, etc.).
Your Profile
Requirements:
1) an excellent PhD (or doctoral degree) in law, social or cultural anthropology, or other relevant discipline in the human sciences (received within the last five years);
2) clear evidence of familiarity with and knowledge of the topic to be addressed in the research proposal;
3) an interest in empirical field research (this can include relevant legal practice);
4) a solid publication record with articles in peer-reviewed journals.
5) language requirements: a good command of written and spoken English and evidence of relevant language skills (depending on the topic and the regional focus).
Amongst the flagship initiatives the Department is currently developing is a new project that seeks to collect judicial cases on religious and cultural diversity from different European countries. Postdoctoral researchers will be able to significantly contribute to the set-up and data collection from within their own fields to help build up this major research instrument.
Successful applicants will also be expected to collaborate with the other colleagues in the Department, contribute to teamwork and a collegial atmosphere, and generally strive to ensure cross-fertilization within the Department.
Our Offer
The Department offers a stimulating interdisciplinary forum where both anthropologists and lawyers can engage with one another and conduct interdisciplinary, cutting-edge, and policy-relevant research on some of the more urgent socio-legal issues of today. The workplace is Halle/Saale (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany).
Employment will be on a full-time contractual basis. Remuneration will be awarded in accordance with the German public service pay scale. The positions are awarded for three years, and are open to an extension, subject to a positive evaluation, for those envisaging a (German) 'Habilitation' degree. Positions are to start in January 2017 (or later in 2017, depending on applicant's commitments).
The Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in science; we thus explicitly encourage applications from female researchers. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority, assuming equal qualifications.
