whose dissertation project focuses on East Asian Security
The doctoral candidates will work closely with GEAS Einstein Visiting Fellow Professor Richard Samuels (MIT), the Working Group and GEAS faculty.
We offer PhD stipends of € 1365 €/month (plus 103 €/m research allowance). Fellowships will initially be granted for one year, and contingent upon a positive evaluation after each year of study, fellowships will be extended for another year. The fellowship may be granted for a maximum of three years.
Doctoral dissertations at GEAS (EVF Working Group) are expected to analyze the institutional environment of security in the East Asian region (China, Japan and/or Korea).
Successful applicants will have an above average master’s degree in either area studies (Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies) or a relevant discipline (Political Science, International Relations, Security Studies, Economics, Law, History, Environmental Policy) with a focus on East Asia. The language of instruction is English. Successful candidates will also show proof of language skills in an East Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) at a level of B2 (CEFR) or higher.

The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies (http://www.helsinki.fi/phca/) belongs to the Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, and has a strong profile in the multidisciplinary research and teaching of the humanities.
Department’s project Rationality in Perception: Transformations of Mind and Cognition 1250-1550 invites applications for the position of
DOCTORAL STUDENT
for a fixed term from November 1st, 2015 to October 31st, 2019.
The project aims to investigate late medieval theories of mind and cognition focusing on the relation between intellect and the senses, the activity of perception, and the development of a model of cognition that is characterized by the incremental reduction of all psychological function to the mind.
Candidates are expected to conduct research on the above-mentioned research project, namely by writing a dissertation on a topic related to late medieval theories of perception, especially within the Augustinian tradition. The exact topic is to be agreed upon by the selected applicant and the supervisor, who will be the project’s director (co-supervision is possible and in fact recommended). Working knowledge of Latin and medieval philosophy are obligatory requirements, and skills in reading and editing manuscripts considered an advantage. In addition to research, the successful applicant is also expected to take on some management tasks, such as maintaining the project’s website. The candidate should have a good command of the English language.
The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. There is a four-month trial period for the position.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, the UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide. The Sustainable Development of Tourism Programme (SDT) builds its work upon the Plan of Implementation agreed upon at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD, Johannesburg, 2002), in pursuit of the Millennium Development Goals, the post 2015 Development Agenda and in the framework of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. It covers the areas of policies and tools for SDT, their application to the different types of tourism destinations as well as their integration into global initiatives on sustainable development.
In 2015, UNWTO will continue the PhD Research Programme, successfully started in 2014, which will offer again two PhD students the opportunity to contribute to the UNWTO programme for Sustainable Development of Tourism (SDT). The main aim of this programme is to support research to advance the general knowledge and further broaden ones’ understanding about the importance of sustainable and resilient tourism at the international level.
The PhD Research Programme will be located in Madrid, Spain, at UNWTO headquarters, working with the SDT Programme. Successful candidates will be sponsored for a period of 12 months and are expected to work under the supervision of the Director of the SDT programme and/or another staff member in the programme. Appropriate logistics (i.e., first-hand access to meetings and UN processes; internal access to all UNWTO documents and database and other relevant industry data and processes; own office space, computer and internet accessibility) will be made available. The date of entry on duty is 1ST August or 1ST September 2015. Applicants are required to dedicate most of their time to the research at the UNWTO headquarters; however arrangements for field research are envisaged. PhD candidates are expected to prepare three research papers, for publishing or the equivalent, on their designated research subject. Successful candidates will conduct research in one of the following areas:
Global Processes on sustainable development: biodiversity, sustainable consumption and production, sustainable tourism, 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), post-2015 development agenda, Rio+20, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
Resilient tourism: transportation and tourism policies, travel facilitation, post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction (HFA-2) – to foster growth and development;
Eligibility
The researchers should possess the following knowledge and skills:
Applicants must be enrolled in doctoral studies and be external collaborative PhD students, but should not be in their final year of study;
The lump sum should be used to finance the one year stay abroad in Madrid and should not be used for tuition or other fees related to the PhD degree;
The successful candidate must have excellent written and spoken English;
Applicants must be computer literate in Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 software, Internet and emerging Web tools, and should be able to operate standard office equipment (e.g. scanner, photocopier, etc.); experience with data management software is an asset; have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs;
Applicants must have academic background in international affairs, sustainable development, international and/or development economics, aviation and transportation management, environmental affairs or related fields;
The successful PhD candidate shall conduct himself/herself at all times in a manner befitting his/her status as a holder of a UNWTO research grant. Any serious infringement of this general rule may lead, after consultation with the authorities concerned, to the termination of the research;
Applicants must possess a medical certificate indicating that he/she is in good health and able to undertake the research programme;
The researcher shall be in possession of a major global medical insurance coverage to be paid by him/her;
The UNWTO is not in any way committed to employ the researcher upon completion of UNWTO research;
The researcher shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to his/her stay in Madrid;
Scholarship
The selected candidates will be offered a twelve months sponsorship. A monthly lump sum of EUR 2000 per month, to be paid at the end of each month.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AT THE STAATLICHE MUSEEN ZU BERLIN - PREUSSISCHER KULTURBESITZ

Launched in 2009, the International Scholarship Program offers scholars from around the world the opportunity to spend one to three months on a research residency at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
The program supports research projects that bear direct relation to the diverse institutions and rich collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. It aims to strengthen the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s position within the international scholarly network and is therefore aimed specifically at foreign scholars who do not reside in Germany. The program especially promotes young researchers. The scholarships allow researchers to work on their project and make professional contacts at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. As a result, they also get to participate in the scholarly and cultural life within the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz.
Graduate scholars, postgraduates and doctoral candidates as well as post-docs and professors who do not have their residence in Germany are eligible for application. The applicants must hold at least a first university degree at the time of application.

In Germany doctoral education in structured PhD programmes has become an essential part of the qualification process of young academics. Stringent quality standards regarding the selection and hosting of doctoral students as well as a thriving international research environment create unique perspectives for a successful academic and social integration and make these programmes highly attractive, particularly for foreign applicants.
In cooperation with the DAAD the Department of Philology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University in Münster is offering two scholarships for interested and qualified international doctoral candidates in the area of literary studies starting October 1st 2016.
The Graduate School, 'Practices of Literature' offers the opportunity to complete your doctorate degree within three years and to prepare for an academic career in university or non-university professions. In the framework of the GSSP, two scholarships will be awarded to international PhD-students, who will be financially supported for up to three years, in case of emerging countries for up to four years.
Participating areas of study:
English/American Studies, Arabic/Islamic Studies, Baltic Studies, Book Studies, German Studies, Comparative Studies, Latin Philology/Studies, Dutch Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Romance Studies, Sinology, Slavonic Studies.
The following three areas are to be emphasized in the individual doctoral dissertations:
1. Literature and Society
(The relationship between literary studies, social theories, cultural theories and Studies, and Literature)
2. Theories of Literature
(philosophy of science, history and theory of literature)
3. Putting the Study of Literature into Practice
(Occupationally-oriented areas that apply literary studies, the literary marketplace, key qualifications, the relationship between literary theory and professional practice)
Curriculum:
Lectures/series of talks, colloquia, group projects, workshops, practical training, academic teaching.
Mentoring:
Each doctoral candidate will be allocated to an individual, interdisciplinary support group consisting of three members. A written agreement regarding the mentoring as well as an individual work- and time schedule will be drawn up.

Requirements
- A qualifying degree at the level of Master/Magister/Staatsexamen (minimum grade: “gut”/B), in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree (minimum grade: “sehr gut”/A).
- Very good German language skills are recommended, as the courses at the GSPoL are taught in German
- At the time of the application, the last final exam should have taken place during the past six years
- At the time of the application the applicant should not have resided in Germany for more than fifteen months.

ISRAELI GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS, 2016
Applications are invited for Israeli Government Scholarships available for foreign students in Israel. The applicant must hold a BA or BSc degree (or higher) and have a good record of academic achievement. Different types of scholarships are offered summer language courses (Ulpan) and one academic year or Research scholarships. The applicant should be a citizen of the country where he/she applies for the scholarship and be under the age of 35 (at the beginning of the academic year). Application should be submitted till November 30 each year.
Study Subject(s): These government scholarships are awarded to study any course offered by the Israel Universities (Scholarships will be granted only in universities and programs approved by the Ministry).

Scholarship Description: The Government of Israel is pleased to offer scholarships to foreign students, as agreed in the Cultural Agreements between Israel and the eligible countries. Students can choose either a short-term scholarship or a long-term scholarship:

-Ph.D Students: Ph.D students who are registered for Ph.D studies in Israel may apply for a one academic year (8 months) scholarship from the Ministry. This scholarship is not renewable and the student will need to find other sources to finance the full degree. Registration to the Ph.D program is the student’s responsibility. The student will need to meet the Israeli university requirements for the Ph.D program.
-M.A. students: M.A. students who are registered for M.A. studies in Israel to apply for a one academic year (8 months) scholarship from the Ministry. This scholarship is not renewable and the student will need to find other sources to finance the full degree. Registration to the M.A. program is at the student’s responsibility and the student will need to meet the university requirements for the M.A. program.
-Overseas and International programs: It is possible to register to one of the Overseas or International Programs under the following restrictions: The scholarship will be given for one academic year (8 months) only and not for the full program. Tuition fees will not include extra courses such as summer Ulpan, Arabic language course, or any other additional course offered by the Overseas or International Program.
-Special Programs: Some Israeli universities offer special post-graduate programs in English. It is possible to register to one of these special programs under the following restrictions: The scholarship will be given for one academic year (8 months) only and not the full program. The scholarship will cover only part of the tuition fee. It is imperative to verify the nature and the cost of the special program before registration. Students may apply for scholarships from other sources in order to cover the high cost of the programs.
