The Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki functions as a national centre of research, study and expertise pertaining to Russia and Eastern Europe, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. Between 2012 and 2017, the Institute coordinates the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies - Choices of Russian Modernization, which is a joint Centre of Excellence of the Universities of Helsinki and Tampere. The Centre of Excellence is a multidisciplinary and international research community that strives to redefine the agenda on Russian modernisation.

The above topics can be approached from a broad array of disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. According to the regulations of the University of Helsinki, the appointees must hold a doctoral degree and have evidence of scholarly research work, and must possess the teaching skills necessary for the position. The appointee must have the ability to lead a research group and obtain supplementary research funding. Particular consideration will be given to scholarly work outside Finland and evidence of international cooperation. Applicants are expected to have been granted their doctoral degree in 2009 or earlier.
A record of publication demonstrating research excellence and capacity to publish at an international level is essential, together with experience in managing successful research projects. In addition, candidates should have strong analytical and methodological skills, and be comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English, as well as a good command of Russian.
The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities (YPJ). The starting salary for the position will be EUR 4,200–4,700 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. Employment contracts are made with a probationary period of four months.
