The  Paris Institute for Advanced Studies  welcomes applications from high level international scholars and scientists in the fields of the humanities, the social sciences and related fields for periods of five or nine months, during the academic year 2016-2017.
The Paris IAS will host around twenty guest researchers, allowing them to work freely on the project of their choice. The researchers will benefit from the scientific environment of the Institute and have the opportunity to create contacts with researchers in the academic institutions of Greater Paris.
Deadline for applications: April 30, 2015, 3:00pm (Paris time)
 
Applicants may request residencies for the following periods:
- 1 September 2016 to 31 January 2017 (5 months)
or           - 1 October 2016 to 30 June 2017 (9 months)
or           - 1 February to 30 June 2017 (5 months)
 
RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Research at the Paris IAS takes place inside two types of programs: the non-thematic bottom-up program based on free individual initiatives, and the thematic program, presently related to building bridges between the humanities and social sciences on the one hand, and the cognitive and neuro-sciences, on the other.
The bottom-up non-thematic  program
The primary mission of the Paris IAS is to be a research centre anchored in the humanities and social sciences, open to any discipline and subject within this domain. Its aim is to enable a fruitful dialogue between researchers from different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds. Approximately 3/4 of the fellows will be selected in the framework of this program, for which the excellence of the researcher and his/her project is the essential criterion.
The Thematic program: The mind and the brain. The interface between humanities and social sciences and neuroscience
Beside applications within the above mentioned non-thematic program, the Paris IAS invites applications centred on the dialogue between the humanities, social sciences, and the cognitive and neuro-sciences. Approximately 1/4 of the fellows will be selected in relation to this theme.
The exponential development of scientific data on genetics and the brain gives us more and more insight on the functioning of the human being in its environment. It is becoming increasingly difficult to reflect on topics such as the Human, mind and consciousness in the humanities and social sciences without taking into account the neuro-anatomic and neuro-functional data produced by life sciences and neuroscience in particular. Reciprocally, neuroscience cannot claim to understand the Human if they do not incorporate the knowledge built up by the humanities.
The aim of this program is to enable the humanities and social sciences to renew their approaches to classical topics or to open new fields of research.
 
 
STAYING AT THE PARIS IAS
The Paris IAS provides its fellows with a monthly remuneration (or complement of remuneration) and a total or partial coverage of their housing expenses. It also pays for their round-trip ticket to Paris.
Status and remuneration
Fellows who maintain their status in their home institution benefit from a stipend. For others, the Paris IAS proposes a short term research contract with salary. In all cases, the remuneration depends on the fellow’s personal and professional situation and on whether he or she continues to receive pay from his/her home institution. The benchmark pay scale corresponds to prevailing standards in French academia.
Housing
To facilitate housing for its guest researchers, the Paris IAS has formed partnerships with two residences that host international researchers: Maison Suger and Les Récollets. It covers the rent of the apartments in these residences. If a fellow chooses to live in a private apartment, the IAS can provide a housing stipend which amount varies on the basis of the family situation of the fellow.
Travel
Travel costs from the fellow’s home to Paris and back are covered by the IAS (economy class).
Insurances
The IAS’ fellows will need to get a personal insurance covering all risks during their stay, for themselves as well as the people accompanying them.
Support for research
During their stay, the fellows will have an office at the Paris IAS (Hôtel de Lauzun) with a computer, Internet access, and printer. The IAS provides meeting and conference rooms.
The fellows can receive financial support and materials for their work and research activities. This includes organising scientific events (colloquia, seminars, lectures, doctoral training, etc.) and research-related travel. Support for the translation and publication of their research texts can also be proposed.
The Paris IAS and its partner institutions have signed agreements enabling the fellows to enjoy special access and lending privileges in the main Paris university-based research libraries. In addition, the fellows can have their books and documents delivered directly from the libraries to the institute.
 
 
CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY
Researchers from all countries are eligible.
Applicants who have spent more than a total of 12 months in France during the last 3 years prior to the application are not eligible.
This call for applications is open to:
*  Senior university professors or researchers holding a permanent position in a university or research institution and having a minimum of 10 years of full time research experience after their PhD
*  Junior scholars having the status of postdoctoral researcher or holding a position in a university or research institution, and having a minimum of 2 and maximum of 9 years of research experience after the PhD.
The institute is bilingual. Knowledge of English is required. The applicants are also expected to understand French, as scientific and social activities are held in French and English.
 
 
CRITERIA OF SELECTION
The main criteria of selection are the same for white and thematic programs:
*  the scientific quality of the project, its innovative character and its importance for the scientific community;
*  the career path of the applicant;
*  the quality of the scientific contacts of the applicants in France, and the applicant’s capacity to collaborate with French scholars and research teams.
 
 
THE APPLICATION
The application, in English or French, must be submitted via an online application system (see our website   http://paris-iea.fr/en/how-apply  for a detailed description of the procedure). Paper or e-mail applications are not accepted.
The application consists of the following items:
*  the completed application form;
*  a curriculum vitae (10 pages maximum) including a list of publications and a list of the 5 publications considered as most important by the applicant;
*  a detailed research proposal (25 000 characters maximum spaces included. The proposal should include :
*  theme
*  state of the art in the field, innovative character of the proposal
*  methodology or theoretical  framework
*  expected outcomes
*  work planning, timescales
*  existing or planned scientific cooperation and contacts in France
*  bibliography (books and articles cited)
*  a letter of cooperation signed by a member of a university or research institution based in France. Preference  will be given to projects conducted in cooperation with the partners of the IAS (Universities of Paris 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, EHESS, EPHE, ENS Cachan, ENS, Paris, FMSH)
*  a list of four topics on which the applicant could give a lecture during the fellowship
*  in the case of Junior Fellows (2 to 9 years after the PhD), two letters of recommendation
*  the name of three experts with whom the applicant has not collaborated in the past who could review the application

Visiting Senior Fellowship Program, 2015 – 2016
The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts announces its program for Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior Fellowships. Fellowships are for full-time research, and scholars are expected to reside in Washington and to participate in the activities of the Center throughout the fellowship period. Lectures, colloquia, and informal discussions complement the fellowship program. Each visiting senior fellow is provided with a study. In addition, visiting senior fellows who relocate to Washington are provided with housing in apartments near the Gallery, subject to availability. Visiting senior fellows have access to the notable resources represented by the art collections, the library, and the image collections of the National Gallery of Art, as well as to the Library of Congress and other specialized research libraries and collections in the Washington area.  
Fields of Study
Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior Fellowships are intended to support research in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, prints and drawings, film, photography, decorative arts, industrial design, and other arts) of any geographical area and of any period. Visiting senior fellowship applications are also solicited from scholars in other disciplines whose work examines artifacts or has implications for the analysis and criticism of visual form.
Qualifications and Selection
Visiting senior fellowships are intended for those who have held the PhD for five years or more at the time of application, or who possess an equivalent record of professional accomplishment. Individuals currently affiliated with the National Gallery of Art are not eligible for the visiting senior fellowship program. Visiting senior fellowships are awarded without regard to the age or nationality of applicants. Applications are reviewed by an external selection committee composed of scholars in the history of art and related disciplines. Outside readers may assist in the evaluation of proposals.
Stipend
The Center awards up to 12 short-term (up to 60 days) Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce Visiting Senior Fellowships annually. Stipends for two-month fellowships range from $6,000 to $8,000, depending on relocation requirements.
Associate Appointments
The Center will consider appointment of associates who have obtained outside awards for full-time research and would like to be affiliated with the Center. Appointments to associate status will be considered for periods of up to 60 days. Qualifications and selection for associate status are the same as those for visiting senior fellows.
Applications
Candidates for visiting senior fellowships must submit an online application that includes a proposal and a copy of one article or chapter of a book, to be submitted on or before the appropriate deadline. Two letters of recommendation in support of the application are required. Procedures for associate appointments are the same as those for the visiting senior fellowship program.
Visiting senior fellows may receive awards in three consecutive years but thereafter must wait three years before reapplying to the Center. Individuals may not apply for other Center fellowships while an application is pending or once a fellowship has been awarded. Visiting senior fellowships may not be postponed or renewed. Международная конференция «Древность и классицизм — наследие Винкельмана в России»

Конференция пройдет 30 сентября и 1 октября 2015 года в Санкт-Петербурге.
 
Языки проведения конференции — немецкий и русский. Предполагается синхронный перевод докладов. Регламент выступлений: доклады — 15–20 минут, их обсуждение — 10 минут.
 
Организаторы конференции: немецкое Винкельмановское общество, Институт русской литературы (Пушкинский Дом) РАН, Государственный Эрмитаж. Российский союз германистов.
 
Заявки на участие в конференции принимаются до 20 апреля 2015 года. Письмо должно содержать заглавие доклада и краткие тезисы выступления (ок. 1800 знаков с пробелами).

„Древность и классицизм — наследие Винкельмана в России“
 
Интернациональный коллоквиум
30 сентября и 1 октября 2015 года в Санкт-Петербурге
 
Международная конференция в Санкт-Петербурге будет посвящена значению Иоганна Иоахима Винкельмана для археологии, искусствоведения и художественной литературы в России. Рецепция его идей начинается в царствование Екатерины  II . О внимании императрицы к наследию Винкельмана свидетельствует хотя бы тот факт, что ее имя стоит на первом месте в печатном перечне подписчиков на французский перевод «Истории искусства древности» 1781 года ( Histoire   de   l ' art   de   l ' antiquit é  par   m .  Winkelmann   traduit   de   l ' allemand   par   m .  Huber .  Leipzig , 1781.  T . 1–3 ). Екатерина  II  отметила это издание золотой медалью и заказала в общей сложности шесть экземпляров перевода.
Екатерина  II  поддерживала многообразные контакты с учеными и художниками во всей Европе, также и с геттингенцем Христианом Готлобом Гейне, интенсивно изучавшим сочинения Винкельмана и положившим начало археологии в Геттингенском университете.
Об уважении, которым было окружено имя Винкельмана в конце  XVIII  и в  XIX  веке, можно заключить хотя бы по статуе, установленной в одной из ниш Нового Эрмитажа (проект Лео Кленце), — первого здания в России, специально построенного для публичного художественного музея. Одно из важнейших мест в экспозиции Нового Эрмитажа было изначально отведено собранию древностей.
Важнейшие импульсы для русского классицистического искусства исходили от русских художников и скульпторов, нередко завершавших свое образование в Риме. Кураторство в Риме над пенсионерами петербургской Академии художеств осуществлял близкий друг Винкельмана Иоганн Фридрих Рейфенштейн (1719–1793); он также выполнял поручения по приобретению произведений искусства для русского двора, так, при его посредничестве был куплен «Парнас» Антона Рафаэля Менгса, авторская реплика знаменитой фрески. В это же время возникли собрания слепков и копий с античных статуй, выставлявшихся для обозрения в Академии художеств, а также в качестве украшений в парках и дворцах.
Наряду с влиянием на археологию заслуживают внимания история переводов сочинений Винкельмана и значение его идей для русской литературы, поэзии и прозы, а также для эстетики и теории классицизма и неоклассицизма. При этом, как это показал К. Ю. Лаппо-Данилевский в монографии о влиянии Винкельмана на русскую литературу и эстетику ( Lappo - Danilevskij   K .  J .   Gefühl   für   das   Schöne .  J. J. Winckelmanns Einfluss auf Literatur und ästhetisches Denken in Russland. K ö ln ;  Weimar ;  Wien , 2007), значительную роль играют такие формулы и понятия, как «благородная простота, спокойное величие» и «идеальная красота» и др.
Цель международного коллоквиума — подвести итоги изучения многообразной рецепции идей Винкельмана в России.

„Antike und Klassizismus – Winckelmanns Erbe in Russland“
 
Internationales Kolloquium am
30. September und 1. Oktober 2015 in Sankt Petersburg.
 
Die internationale Konferenz in  Sankt Petersburg  wird sich mit der Winckelmann-Rezeption in der Archäologie, Kunstwissenschaft und Literatur in Russland beschäftigen. Sie ist sichtbar seit Katharina II., die an erster Stelle der gedruckten Subskriptionsliste für Winckelmanns französische Ausgabe der  Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums  ( Histoire de L’art de l’Antiquité , übersetzt aus dem Deutschen von M. Huber, 3 Bde., Leipzig 1781) mit bereits bezahlten sechs Exemplaren stand, eine Ausgabe zudem mit einer Goldmedaille ausgezeichnete. Katharina II. hatte weit verzweigte Kontakte zu Gelehrten und Künstlern in Europa, etwa zu dem Göttinger Christian Gottlob Heyne, der sich mit Winckelmanns Werk intensiv auseinandergesetzt und die Archäologie an der Universität begründet hatte.
Dass Winckelmann in Russland im ausgehenden 18. und im 19. Jahrhundert hoch geschätzt war, darauf verweist seine Statue in einer Nische der Fassade der Neuen Eremitage, ein  klassizistische Gebäudes zur Aufnahme der Antikensammlung entworfen von dem Architekten Leo Klenze. Impulse für die klassizistische Kunst gingen bereits früher von europäischen Architekten aus, aber auch von Künstlern, die als russischen Stipendiaten in Rom zu Johann Friedrich Reiffenstein (1719-1793), einem engen Winckelmann-Freund, kamen; Reiffenstein war von der Akademie der Künste in St. Petersburg als Betreuer ihrer Stipendiaten ausersehen worden und den Ankauf von Kunstwerken wie „Der Parnaß“ von Anton Raffael Mengs für Russland vermittelte. Heute noch bedeutende Antikensammlung entstanden in dieser Zeit, aber auch Abgusssammlungen antiker Plastik, die als Anschauung für Künstler in der Akademie der Künste aufgestellt oder als Dekor und Antikenprogramm zugleich  die Schlösser und Parkanlagen, etwa in Peterhof, schmückten.
Neben den Einflüssen auf die Archäologie, sei aber vor allem an die russischen Übersetzungen von Winckelmanns Werken die Bedeutung seiner Ideen für die russische Literatur, Lyrik, Prosa, wie auch für die Kunstkritik, die Ästhetik und die Theorie des Klassizismus zu analysieren. Dabei spielen auch die von Winckelmann beeinflusste Rezeption der antiken Plastik und die Übernahme Winckelmannscher Formeln und Begriffe wie "edle Einfalt, stille Größe" und "idealische Schönheit" eine wichtige Rolle. Konstantin J. Lappo-Danilevskij (Gefühl für das Schöne. Johann Joachim Winckelmanns Einfluss auf Literatur und ästhetisches Denken in Russland, Köln/Weimar/Wien 2007) hat in einer mustergültigen Studie die zwei Typen der Winckelmann-Rezeption in Rußland, die französische politisierte und die deutsche, politisch indifferente herausgearbeitet.
Ziel des Kolloquiums ist es, diese verzweigte Winckelmann-Rezeption in einem internationalen Kolloquium zusammenzufassen.

Кафедра русской литературы ХХ и ХХI веков Института восточнославянской филологии Ягеллонского университета приглашает принять участие в I Международной научной конференции «Знаковые имена современной русской литературы», которая пройдет в Кракове с 19 по 21 мая 2016 года и будет посвящена творчеству Михаила Шишкина.

Сотрудники кафедры русской литературы ХХ и ХХI веков, исходя из положения, что, вопреки доминирующей практике, научный интерес по отношению к новейшей литературе представляют не только тенденции, течения, направления, предлагает проведение цикла конференций, посвященных знаковым именам современной русской литературы. Их цель – осветить наиболее важные аспекты творчества конкретных писателей новейшего времени. Мы также намереваемся установить и укрепить контакты между исследователями из разных стран мира.
Первая конференция посвящается Михаилу Шишкину (р. 1961). Он автор четырех романов: Записки Ларионова (Всех ожидает одна ночь..., 1993), Взятие Измаила (2000), Венерин волос (2005), Письмовник (2010), а также рассказов и многочисленных эссе. Произведения писателя не оставляют читателей равнодушными, вызывают широкий диапазон эмоций: от восторга до осуждения.
Писатель с 1995 года живет в основном в Швейцарии, и она стала героем таких его книг: Монтре-Миссолонги-Астапово. По следам Байрона и Толстого. Литературная прогулка от Женевского озера в Бернские Альпы (2002), Русская Швейцария. Литературно-исторический путеводитель (1999, рус. изд. 2011). 
Проза автора переводилась на 30 языков мира. 
Шишкин лауреат премий, учрежденных в России, Германии, Франции, Италии, Швейцарии.
По романам писателя сделаны театральные постановки (напр., Аттракцион, Театр МОСТ; Письмовник, МХАТ).
На конференции мы хотели бы обсудить общие и отдельные вопросы его творчества, задуматься над различными интерпретациями художественного мира писателя, выявить особенности его прозы, поговорить о ее «конвертируемости» на языки других искусств и на другие языки мира.
Известность прозы Михаила Шишкина в России и за ее пределами позволяет нам обратиться к широкому кругу специалистов-гуманитариев Европы, Америки и всего мира с приглашением принять участие в нашей конференции.
В рамках конференции предполагаются следующие секции:
1. литературоведческая
2. культурологическая
3. переводческая, в которой планируется также проведение круглого стола, посвященного вопросам перевода прозы Шишкина на другие языки.
Рабочий язык конференции: русский.
Регламент доклада: 20 минут (пленарные заседания) и 15 минут (секционные заседания).
По итогам конференции планируется издание рецензированного сборника. Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право отбора текстов для публикации. Требования к оформлению статей будут сообщены в следующем информационном письме в октябре 2015 г.

Международный конкурс 2015 года на лучший инновационный проект в сфере образования WISE Prize for Education

Оргкомитет международной премии за выдающиеся инновационные проекты в сфере образования WISE Prize for Education сообщает о приеме заявок на конкурс 2015 года. 

Проект, претендующий на получение премии, может быть представлен единственным автором или командой разработчиков (до шести человек) из любой страны мира. Заявка может быть подана от организации, школы, института, частной компании, независимого разработчика или разработчиков. Проект, представляемый на конкурс, должен решать актуальную проблему образования таким способом, чтобы это решение могло быть использовано и в других странах мира. 

Заявка на участие в конкурсе подается онлайн на сайте программы. Форма заявки заполняется на английском языке. Доступ к эккаунтам для участников будет открыт до 1.00 PM, GMT,  31 марта 2015 года . 

После предварительной оценки проектов конкурсной комиссией будет отобрано не более пятнадцати финалистов - кандидатов на получение премии. В ноябре 2015 года, на саммите WISE-2015, который пройдет в Дохе, Катар, будут объявлен Лауреат премии, выбранный международным жюри. 

Победителю конкурса присуждается премия в размере $500,000 (US) и золотая медаль лауреата WISE Prize for Education. 

Сообщество WISE (более чем 9 000 экспертов в области образования и практикующих специалистов из 152 стран мира) окажет финалистам содействие в продвижении предложенных проектов. Таким образом, команды победителей и финалистов получают возможность сделать свои проекты общедоступными, установить новые партнерские отношения, содействуя распространению и воспроизведению инициатив в рамках других образовательных систем и регионов мира.

Всероссийская историко-литературная премия "Александр Невский" 2015 года


Всероссийская историко-литературная премия "Александр Невский" в одиннадцатый раз открывает конкурсный год. 
В этом сезоне традиционно будут проводиться два конкурса - литературных произведений и музейных проектов. Сбор заявок на участие продлится до июня 2015 г. 

Информацию для участников можно получить в соответствующих разделах сайта  www.alexander-nevsky.ru : о музейном и литературном конкурсах. Там же можно скачать формы для заявки и анкеты участника. 

Премиальный фонд Всероссийской историко-литературной премии составляет 1 800 000 рублей. Предусмотрены первая, вторая и третья премии и ряд поощрительных премий. На первом этапе Комиссия по присуждению Премии определит Отборный список участников, который будет объявлен в августе 2015 г., на втором этапе будут определены победители (сентябрь 2015 г.). 

О литературном конкурсе:  
Правом представления произведений на конкурс обладают частные лица, творческие союзы, издательства и другие организации, связанные с литературной, журнальной и редакционной деятельностью. 

На конкурс представляются заявки, в которых на соискание премии выдвигается автор (авторский коллектив) и созданное им произведение, посвященное историческим личностям, внесшим значительный вклад в развитие российского государства, либо другим нашим соотечественникам, явившим своей жизнью пример благородного служения Родине. 

К рассмотрению допускаются произведения, соответствующие Положению о Всероссийской историко-литературной премии «Александр Невский», объемом не менее 5 (пяти) усл. печ. листов, изданные не позднее 3-х месяцев до даты вручения Премии и не ранее 2000 г., и охватывающие период отечественной истории с древних времен до 1991 года включительно. 

Для выдвижения на конкурс по адресу: 101000 г. Москва, а/я 720 с пометкой «Премия «Александр Невский» направляется опубликованное литературное произведение в одном экземпляре, а также заявка и анкета автора. Срок предоставления произведений - не позднее 12 июня. 

Все допущенные к участию в конкурсе произведения на основании утвержденных Комиссией по присуждению Премии критериев получают оценку рецензионной группы. Рецензионная группа формируется Комиссией по присуждению Премии и действует на основании Положения о рецензионной группе. РНФ поддержит научные исследования, результаты которых будут представлены в рамках международной конференции (конгресса)

Гранты выделяются на осуществление фундаментальных и поисковых научных исследований в 2015 – 2017 годах. Результаты проекта должны быть, представлены в рамках организации и проведения в 2016 или 2017 году на территории Российской Федерации ежегодной или проводимой раз в два года известной очной международной научной конференции (конгресса), тематика которой включает в себя тематику проекта. По области науки, соответствующей тематике проекта, в период реализации проекта также должны быть организованы и проведены не менее чем две школы молодых ученых с приглашением в качестве лекторов ведущих российских и зарубежных ученых.

РНФ поддержит научные исследования под руководством ведущих российских и зарубежных ученых

Российский научный фонд начал прием заявок на получение грантов для проведения исследований в небольших группах под руководством ведущих российских и зарубежных ученых.
Гранты выделяются на осуществление научных исследований в 2015 – 2017 годах с последующим возможным продлением срока выполнения проекта на один или два года.
При участии в конкурсе в качестве руководителя проекта ведущего российского ученого организация (филиал организации) не может находиться на территории г. Москвы, Московской области, г. Санкт-Петербурга, Ленинградской области, а также в субъекте Российской Федерации, где проживает или работает ведущий российский ученый. Зарубежный ученый за время реализации проекта должен находиться на территории Российской Федерации не менее 183 дней в течение каждого календарного года, в 2015 году – не менее половины срока от даты заключения соглашения с Фондом.
Размер одного гранта составит от 5 до 10 миллионов рублей ежегодно.
Срок подачи заявок до 20 апреля 2015 года. Результаты конкурса будут объявлены Фондом до 10 июля 2015 года.

Целью проводимого компанией «Ролекс» конкурса является оказание финансовой помощи людям любой национальности в возрасте от 18 до 30 лет, с активной жизненной позицией, которые хотели бы реализовать проекты, направленные на улучшение качества жизни на Земле, расширении знаний о нашем мире. 

К конкурсу допускаются проекты по следующим приоритетным направлениям: 
наука и здравоохранение;
прикладные технологии;
охрана окружающей среды;
культурное наследие;
исследования и открытия.
В рамках конкурса компании «Ролекс» не поддерживаются фундаментальные научные исследования. 

Конкурс, учрежденный в 1976 году в 2016 отметит свое сорокалетие. Для юбилейного года предусмотрены десять премий, пять - Laureate Awards и пять - Young Laureate Awards. Каждый из победителей конкурса Laureate Awards получит премию в размере 100,000 швейцарских франков, Young Laureate Awards - по 50,000 швейцарских франков. Всем победителям вручаются часы Ролекс. 

Заявки на участие в конкурсе являются индивидуальными и не могут подаваться от коллектива или организации. Role Description

We are seeking to appoint to a two-year fixed-term Lectureship in Russian History (pre-1917).  This position is based in the Department of History on the Heslington West campus and is available from 1 September 2015 until 31 August 2017. 

You will develop and deliver a range of undergraduate modules in Russian History, as well as contributing to the Department’s core modules; carry out individual or collaborative research projects, leading to the production of research outputs/outcomes, and undertake related administrative and managerial duties. 

You should have (or have submitted) a PhD in the field of Russian History or cognate field, and ideally hold an appropriate teaching qualification. It is expected that you will have an emerging publication record in a relevant area of Russian History, with proven experience of teaching at undergraduate level across a range of modules.
