George F. Kennan Fellowship, Kennan Institute
 
George F. Kennan Fellows will be based at the
Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. for three-month
residencies. Fellows will receive access to the
Library of Congress, National Archives, and policy
research centers in Washington, D.C., as well as
the opportunity to meet with key experts and
officials at the State Department, USAID,
Department of Defense, and Congress. While
conducting research, the George F. Kennan Fellows
are expected to actively participate in discussions
with the policy and academic communities,
including speaking engagements at the Wilson
Center as well as potentially outside of
Washington D.C., and attending meetings,
conferences, and other activities organized by the
Kennan Institute and Wilson Center. Upon
completion of the fellowships, the grantees become
alumni, for whom Kennan will continue to offer

IMEMS Library Fellowships

How to Apply
We are delighted to invite applications from postdoctoral researchers for visiting fellowships within the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Successful applicants will be reimbursed expenses of up to £1,500 per month for up to three months, to go towards travel, accommodation and living expenses during the fellowship. Applicants should submit a CV and a brief summary of what they propose to work on.

Applications should demonstrate a serious research interest that focuses on primary source material within the special collections in Palace Green Library and/or Durham Cathedral, and that falls within the scope of the IMEMS’ research interests.

Applications from those interested on working on the surviving contents of the Durham Cathedral’s medieval priory library are particularly welcome as this collection is currently the focus of a large-scale digitisation project.

Fellows will be encouraged to work collaboratively with curators and other subject specialists to realise the collections’ research potential, and to adopt innovative research methodologies. They will also be encouraged to participate actively within the life of the Institute and work for one day per week in the IMEMS offices.

Applications should be submitted no later than Saturday 28th February 2015 to [email protected]. Candidates will be notified of the outcome by the end of March 2015.

Dates of the fellowships can be flexible, but please indicate your availability in 2015 and early 2016, and your preferred fellowship duration (i.e. one, two or three months).

Call for Papers for the 15th Aleksanteri Conference  Culture and Russian Society

With Vladimir Putin’s third re-election in 2012, the Russian creative class gathered political momentum, and cultural and intellectual practices in Russia regained social and political relevance. At the same time, culture and its traditional institutions have become increasingly integrated into state policies to reconstruct a uniform national Russian identity. The annexation of Crimea, the crisis in Ukraine, and the changing geopolitical landscape have highlighted those Russian views that draw on an understanding of Russia as a unique civilization separate from the West.
The 15th Aleksanteri Conference  Culture and Russian Society  will take place in Helsinki from Oct 21 to 23, 2015. The conference invites proposals which focus on the cultural challenges and intellectual choices Russia and its diverse population face today.  Keynote speakers include Catriona Kelly, Vlad Strukov, Vera Tolz, Elena Vartanova, Michael Gorham and Evert van der Zweerde.
We welcome scholars from all fields in humanities, social and political sciences to contribute to the investigation of the role of cultural analysis in enriching our understanding of Russia’s recent developments. We encourage panel proposals with three presentations, discussant, and chair, but will also review individual paper proposals.

СЕМИОТИКА ВЛАСТИ: НАСИЛИЕ И АВТОНОМНОСТЬ
 
Глубокоуважаемые коллеги!
Эстонский фонд семиотического наследия приглашает вас принять участие в Седьмых Лотмановских днях в Таллиннском университете, которые состоятся с 5 по 7 июня 2015 года.
 
Ю. М. Лотман разрабатывал различные аспекты темы власти. В 1960–1970-х годах им рассматривалась власть языка как «источника структурности» и инструмент самоописания культуры, в результате которого «метасистема становится настолько жесткой, что почти перестает пересекаться с реальными семиотическими системами, на описание которых она претендует» («Динамическая модель семиотической системы», см. также: «Культура как коллективный интеллект и проблемы искусственного разума», «Текст и функция» и др.).
 
Концепт власти использовался Лотманом также для установления архетипов социокультурного поведения и их исторических трансформаций (см., например: «“Договор” и “вручение себя” как архетипические модели культуры»), для выявления стратегий бытового поведения в условиях самодержавной России  XVIII – XIX  веков, для описания динамики «символических языков  XVIII  века», отразившей разрыв культуры и государственности («Между эмблемой и символом»).
 
Размышления об отличиях бинарных и тернарных общественных структур (см. в «Культуре и взрыве»: «Тернарная система стремится приспособить идеал к реальности, бинарная – осуществить на практике неосуществимый идеал») отразились в публицистических откликах на политические события периода «перестройки». В поздних работах Лотман ставил также вопросы исторической и нравственной ответственности человека перед историей. Идеи Лотмана о семиотике власти развивались параллельно с идеями других выдающихся мыслителей  XX  века (прежде всего Мишеля Фуко); наличие или отсутствие диалога с ними требует дальнейшего изучения.
 
В качестве одного из пленарных предполагается доклад Оге А. Хансена-Лёве «Эстетика насилия между символизмом и авангардом».
 
На заседаниях конференции планируется рассмотреть следующий круг вопросов:
  власть языка как «источника структурности»;
  интеллигенция и власть: проблемы диалога;
  власть и канон;
  власть и проблема выбора в литературе и истории;
  социальный заказ и специфика догматического искусства;
  мотив взаимодействия человека и власти в художественных текстах;
  власть и искусство, власть и наука: формы взаимоотношений;
  художественный текст: риторика или общественное действие;
  власть и проблемы поведения отдельного человека: адаптация, интериоризация, автоцензура;
  власть и мифологизация истории;
  самоописание культуры и дискурсы власти.
Организаторы конференции приглашают к сотрудничеству филологов, историков, искусствоведов, культурологов, философов, политологов; приветствуются также и междисциплинарные исследования.
На конференции предполагается работа секций на русском и английском языках. Регламент выступления — 30 минут (20 минут доклад, 10 минут обсуждение).
Организационный взнос не предусмотрен, проезд и проживание — за счет участников, докладчикам оформляется визовое приглашение.
Желающих принять участие в конференции просим  к 16 марта 2015 года  прислать:
— тему и краткую аннотацию выступления (не более 2000 знаков с пробелами);
— краткое  CV  (имя, фамилия, место работы, ученая степень, описание сферы научных интересов — не более 1000 знаков с пробелами).

 Международная научная конференция «Проблемы реформирования России на
рубеже XIX-XX вв.: к столетию со дня смерти С.Ю. Витте»

Европейский университет в Санкт-Петербурге и Санкт-Петербургский
институт истории Российской Академии наук при поддержке ФГУП «Гознак»
организуют международную конференцию «Проблемы реформирования России
на рубеже XIX-XX вв.: к столетию со дня смерти С.Ю. Витте».
Конференция пройдет 19-20 июня 2015 г. и продолжит цикл конференций,
посвященных истории реформ в России.

Современные исследователи, журналисты, политики часто апеллируют к
реформаторскому опыту Российской империи и именам С.Ю. Витте и П.А.
Столыпина, в которых видят некий идеал выдающихся государственных
деятелей. Организаторы конференции предлагают исследовать
реформаторский процесс в условиях самодержавной монархии (последняя
треть XIX вв. – 1905 г.), особенности реформирования в период
революционного кризиса 1905-1906, и реформаторский курс в условиях
существования Государственной Думы (конец 1906 – 1910-е гг.)

Основные темы для обсуждения:

Реформаторы – путь во власть, личные связи, взгляды, проекты. «Кухня
реформаторов» и уникальный опыт законотворчества. Преемственность и
разрывы в осуществлении реформ. Монархия и реформаторы.

Общественная атмосфера реформ. Восприятие проектов и реализации реформ
в обществе и в «простом народе». Альтернативные проекты,
предлагавшиеся правительству извне. Споры о дальнейшем пути реформ.
Оппозиция реформам.

Реформы и революция. Оценка реформ политическими и общественными
деятелями и их альтернативные проекты. Государственная Дума и реформы.

Реформы в судьбах людей: перемены в повседневной жизни, новые
практики, новые слова, идеи, идеалы.

Историческая память о реформах и реформаторах. Оценка С.Ю. Витте и
П.А. Столыпина в историографии. Актуализация реформаторского опыта
Российской империи рубежа XIX-XX вв. в современной России.

Время проведения конференции: 19-20 июня 2015 г.

Отбор докладов будет произведен на конкурсной основе. Организаторы
конференции просят предоставить тезисы докладов (не более 3 тысяч
знаков) к 31 марта 2015 года.

  Call for Papers: New Perspectives on Censorship under Communism

University College, University of Oxford

Censorship played a crucial role in the production and dissemination
of information and artistic production in communist states, whether
imposed by the state apparatus or carried out by an individual; in
these countries the existence of repressive state censorship organs
was supplemented by a strong tradition of informal self-censorship.
This conference seeks to explore the complexity and heterogeneity of
censorship under communism, problematizing the usual understanding of
the phenomenon as purely destructive and violent while examining the
particular trajectory along which it developed in communist countries.
The conference takes an explicitly comparative approach in order to
explore differences and commonalities between practices and
institutions of censorship in the communist states, highlighting the
variety and mutability of these practices of cultural regulation. It
will examine multiple forms of censorship and their impact in
different media, prompting a deeper exploration of the commonalities
and differences in censorship systems and practices.

”Политические культуры на Востоке и Западе: взгляд из Сибири” 
 
 
Тематика  конференции определена широко, чтобы можно было рассматривать культуру политики, ее антропологический, социальный , психологический, гуманитарный контекст, а также и  политические персоналии  в мировой истории  на Востоке и Западе,   в Евразии и странах Южных морей. 
 
 
  «Политическая культура» - одно из наиболее часто используемых и, при этом, наименее четко определяемых понятий в социально-политических науках.
Наиболее внятное, с точки зрения высокой научности, определение «политической культуры» может звучать так: это система по большей части неформальных норм и ценностей, определяющих политическое мышление и политическое поведение людей. Кроме того, определяющих эмоции и переживания, которые люди испытывают по поводу «политического», а также логику оценивания ими политических феноменов – политических лидеров, политических событий, политических процессов, политических идей, политических систем. 
По сути, речь идет о внеинституциональном бытии политики или о неформальных правилах политической жизни, что, кстати, сближает политико-культурный подход с т.н. «неоинституционалистским» подходом.
Исследования политических культур позволяют понять, почему одни и те же «политические институты» работают по-разному в разных странах, в разных цивилизациях, обобщенно говоря – на Западе и Востоке. Почему в разных странах востребованы разные типажи политических лидеров. Почему не только сходные политические институты, но одни и те же политические идеологии наполняют политическую жизнь разных стран совершенно разным содержанием.
Исследования политических культур позволяют не просто изучить традиции и прочий набор «исторических условий», то есть почву, из которой вырастают    и на которую опираются политические культуры. Они позволяют историку испытать настоящее исследовательское удовольствие, рассмотрев как прошлое бытийствует в современности, как прошлое наносит свои отпечатки на настоящее, как прошлое задает форматы, в которых в любом актуальном настоящем производится будущее».(С.Ф. В ходе конференции  предполагается обсудить следующие вопросы :
1.Власть и подвластность как явления политической культуры
2.Формальные и неформальные нормы и их роль в политической культуре
3.Традиционализм и модернизм в политической культуре
4. Лояльность и оппозиционность: происхождение и формы проявления в политических культурах.
5. Человек в политике: личностные особенности, стратегии поведения, карьера и судьба 
6. Политические лидеры:  типичное и особенное
7. Женщины в политике: гендерные аспекты политической культуры 
8. «Народ», «Подданные», «Граждане», «Избиратели»: представления и роли масс и массовых движений в политических культурах
9. Идеи и идеологии в политической культуре
10. «Знание – сила»: наука и научное знание как фактор политики
11. Вера и суеверие как факторы политики
12. «Святое» и «кощунственное» - два полюса политических чувств: как понимается святость и святотатство в разных политических культурах.
13. Война и память о войне как явление политической культуры
 
Обсуждение этих вопросов предполагается в рамках работы следующих секций:
Политическая культура как проблема философии и методологии 
Политические культуры на Востоке
Политические культуры на Западе
Политические культуры в странах Южных морей
Политические культуры в России и Сибири

Борьба резолюций «правой» и «левой» групп в рамках общества в период войны 1899-1902гг.
 
Примером, подтверждающим это, могут быть требования совета директоров Ост-Индской компании, согласно которым любые проекты реформирования налоговой, земельной системы в Индии следовало приводить в соответствие с доктринами политической экономии того времени, в первую очередь, с теориями А. Смита, Т. Р. Мальтуса, Д. Рикардо 1 .

  УСЛОВИЯ УЧАСТИЯ В КОНГРЕССЕ
Решение о включении заявленного мероприятия в окончательный вариант Программы будет приниматься по результатам поданных тезисов на это мероприятие. В частности, на круглый стол должно быть заявлено не менее 10 чел., зарегистрированных в качестве участника конгресса (тезисы на круглый стол не подаются).
Обращаем внимание, что каждый участник Конгресса вместе с подачей (или после подачи) тезисов на секцию (симпозиум, конференцию) может сделать заявку на участие только в одном в круглом столе, указав его название.
Программный комитет оставляет за собой право на отклонение поступивших заявок без объяснения причин.
Заявки на индивидуальное участие в конгрессе принимаются посредством подачи тезисов, на нижеуказанных условиях:
– Тезисы (в электронном виде, в объеме 2000 печатных знаков), с обязательным указанием секции , шрифт Times New Roman (в формате Word), можно подавать только один раз и только на одно из мероприятий конгресса  (секция, симпозиум, конференция). Наряду с официальной регистрацией в качестве участника и направлением тезисов на одно из таких мероприятий, можно  также  заявить свое официальное участие (без подачи тезисов) в работе одного из круглых столов (это участие также будет обозначено в программе Конгресса).
– Сверху страницы тезисов указать: секцию (симпозиум, конференцию), ФИО (полностью) автора, учёную степень, учёное звание, город, название тезисов, а также название круглого стола (если вы хотите принять участие в одном из них).
– Срок подачи тезисов на Конгресс –  до 1 июня 2015 г.
– Авторам, чьи тезисы поступят своевременно и будут приняты, Оргкомитет направит персональные приглашения. Отобранные материалы будут опубликованы до начала работы конгресса.
Заявителям необходимо пройти электронную регистрацию на сайте конгресса:  http://rfk2015.bashedu.ru .
Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право редактировать и отклонять по своему усмотрению поступившие в его адрес материалы. Отклоненные тезисы не рецензируются и не возвращаются.

РЕГИСТРАЦИОННЫЕ ВЗНОСЫ
Регистрационные взносы за участие в Конгрессе уплачиваются на счет Президиума РФО (см. ниже) и установлены в следующих размерах:
До 1 июня 2015 г.
– для членов РФО (кто заплатил в РФО взносы за 2014 и 2015 гг.) –  500 руб.;
– для всех остальных –  1500 руб.
После 1 июня 2015 г.
– для членов РФО (кто заплатил в РФО взносы за 2014 и 2015 гг.) –  1000 руб.;
– для всех остальных –  2500 руб.
Организационный взнос для студентов и аспирантов дневного отделения составляет 50% от указанных сумм.
Граждане ближнего и дальнего зарубежья участвуют в работе конгресса на тех же условиях.
NB.  Принятые тезисы будут включены в Программу конгресса только после поступления регистрационного взноса на счет РФО (и только в этом случае автор тезисов будет считаться участником Конгресса). В случае отклонения тезисов регистрационный взнос возвращается. Можно участвовать в Конгрессе без публикации тезисов, в этом случае регистрационный взнос также оплачивается.
Регистрационный взнос оплачивается непосредственно наличными в Президиуме РФО (Москва, ул. Волхонка, 14/1, стр. 5, комн. 102) или переводится на счёт РФО по безналичному расчету.

Международный конкурс РГНФ - Швейцарский национальный научный фонд 2016 года

03.02.2015 гуманитарные и общественные науки

Российский гуманитарный научный фонд (РГНФ) и Швейцарский национальный научный фонд (ШННФ) в соответствии с заключенным между ними соглашением проводят международный конкурс совместных научных исследований в области гуманитарных и общественных наук на 2016 год по следующим основным научным направлениям: 
>01 - история; археология; этнография; 
>03 - философия; социология; политология; правоведение; науковедение; 
>04 - филология; искусствоведение.  На конкурс принимаются заявки по совместным проектам проведения научных исследований, выполняемые научными коллективами - тип проекта - «а» (обозначение в ИС РГНФ - «а(м)»). 

Срок выполнения проекта проведения научных исследований – 1, 2 или 3 календарных года. 

УСЛОВИЯ КОНКУРСА 
Подача заявок на конкурс производится в следующем порядке: 
>1. Российские и швейцарские участники проекта по данному конкурсу предварительно согласовывают между собой научный план совместной работы. 
>2. Российские ученые направляют заявки в РГНФ (на русском языке и по установленным формам РГНФ. Срок подачи – c 02 февраля до 30 апреля 2015 года), а швейцарские ученые - в ШННФ (по установленным формам ШННФ). Состав участников, название, ключевые слова, основные формулировки в обоих вариантах должны быть идентичными. 
>3. Рассматриваются только заявки, поданные параллельно в РГНФ и ШННФ. 
>4. Российские участники должны предоставить в РГНФ номер заявки швейцарских участников, поданной в ШННФ.  Подведение итогов Конкурса планируется в ноябре 2015 г. 

Внимание! 
По конкурсу к рассмотрению будут приниматься только заявки, подготовленные с помощью Информационной системы РГНФ (далее – ИС РГНФ, адрес –  http://grant.rfh.ru/personal или  http://grant.rfh.ru/ ).

>– начало оформления заявок в ИС РГНФ – 02 февраля 2015 года; 
>– окончание регистрации заявок в электронном виде в ИС РГНФ – 30 апреля 2015 года до 16.00 по московскому времени.  В целях своевременной подачи заявок на конкурсы Фонд рекомендует заблаговременно направлять подготовленные заявки в электронном виде на регистрацию.

Background:   Established in 2012 by the Mikhail Prokhorov Foundation and Academic Studies Press, the Historia Nova Prize for the Best Book on Russian Intellectual and Cultural  History recognizes the best scholarly volume originally written and published in English within the preceding two years.  The range of eligible genres has included single and collective-author monographs, collections of articles, and special thematic issues of scholarly journals.
Juried in the past three years by a five-person international team with logistical support from the Press, the Historia Nova prize seeks nominations from publishers, literary agencies, universities and university departments, journals, scholarly organizations, artistic unions, groups, and individuals.

В память об интеллектуальном вкладе известного российского социолога Павла Васильевича Романова«Журнал исследований социальной политики»  инициирует Международный конкурс научных статей «Премия имени Павла Романова».

К рассмотрению принимаются ранее не публиковавшиеся рукописи, в которых развиваются теоретические и методологические идеи Павла Романова и/или близкие направления исследований.

Павел Васильевич Романов (1964–2014) – социолог и социальный антрополог, профессор НИУ «Высшая школа экономики», основатель и первый главный редактор «Журнала исследований социальной политики», директор «Центра социальной политики и гендерных исследований». Он посвятил свою научную карьеру изучению социальной политики, социальных проблем, организаций и профессий. Результаты исследований, методологические и теоретические наработки отражены в публикациях П.В. Романова – монографиях, статьях, выпущенных под его редакцией книгах. Многие коллеги и ученики Павла Васильевича продолжают свою научную работу с использованием социально-антропологических подходов, качественной методологии, визуальных методов.
 
Тема конкурса-2015 -  «Профессии и профессионализм в государстве всеобщего благосостояния»

Статьи, присланные на конкурс, могут отвечать на следующие исследовательские вопросы, хотя и не должны ими ограничиваться:
1.  Как меняются представления о профессионализме в эпоху социальных трансформаций и кризисов?
2.  На какие новые вызовы приходится отвечать специалистам, занятым в различных сферах социального государства?
3.  Как меняются ландшафты профессионализма в современном мире?
4.  Чем характеризуются профессиональные культуры в условиях меняющихся отношений между государством, рынком и гражданским обществом?
5.  Можно ли говорить о прекаризации и медиатизации труда в социальной сфере?

Статьи могут быть посвящены как теоретико-методологическим вопросам, так и результатам эмпирических исследований, иметь фундаментальный или прикладной характер.
 
Результаты конкурса будут объявлены на конференции «Пересматривая профессионализм: вызовы и реформы социального государства» в НИУ ВШЭ 21–22 мая 2015 г. 

Участники, прошедшие конкурсный отбор, будут приглашены для выступления на конференции. Победителей ждут денежные призы и памятные подарки. Лучшие рукописи будут опубликованы в «Журнале исследований социальной политики» после доработки авторами в соответствии с комментариями рецензентов и редакторов.

The Pavel Romanov Prize
In memory of the vital intellectual contribution of the well-known Russian sociologist Pavel V. Romanov, the Journal of Social Policy Studies is initiating the Pavel Romanov Prize, an International Competition of research papers.

The authors are invited to send their unpublished manuscripts, which develop the theoretical and methodological ideas of Pavel Romanov and / or related fields of research. 

Pavel Romanov (1964-2014), was a Russian sociologist and social anthropologist, professor of the National Research University – Higher School of Economics. He was also the co-founder and the first Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Policy Studies and the director of the non-governmental research organization Center for Social Policy and Gender Studies. He devoted his academic career to the study of social policy, social problems, organizations and professions. The results of his research and his contributions in methodology and theory are reflected in Pavel Romanov’s publications; this includes his monographs, articles and books he edited, in both Russian and English. Many of Pavel’s colleagues and students continue their research work using social anthropological approaches, qualitative methodology, visual methods pioneered by Romanov.

The theme of the Pavel Romanov Prize Competition-2015 -  "Professions and professionalism in the welfare state" . 
Articles are invited to be submitted to the Competition, ideally answering one of the following research questions, although contributions on other topics will be considered: 

1. How are understandings of professionalism changing in an era of social transformation and crisis? 
2. What new challenges face professionals employed in various aspects of the welfare state? 
3. How is the landscape of professionalism in the modern world changing? 
4. What are characteristics of professional cultures given the changing relations between the state, the market and civil society? 
5. Can one talk about ‘precarization’ and ‘mediatization’ of labor in the social sphere? 
6. How are the various dimensions of social inequality (gender, ethnicity, class, disability and others) linked to professional culture? How far is inclusive professionalism possible? 
7. Professional knowledge in the age of information transparency: crisis of autonomy or a new cognitive order?

Submissions can be on theoretical and methodological issues, or focus on the results of empirical research. They may be of fundamental or applied nature. The results will be announced at the conference ‘Rethinking professionalism: challenges and reform of the welfare state’ in the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia, on the 21-22nd of May, 2015. Participants selected in the competition will be invited to present at the conference. The winners will receive cash prizes and gifts. The best manuscripts will be published in the Journal of Social Policy Studies after revision by the authors in accordance with the comments of the peer-reviewers and editors.

Criteria for selection:

The Faculty of Arts  is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction. Research at  the Department of World Cultures  focuses on multidisciplinary regional, language and cultural studies.
The Department of World Cultures invites applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP IN AREA AND CULTURAL STUDIES
starting from   1 January 2016. The field of the position is area and cultural studies, with a special emphasis on the development of methods and theories.
Area and cultural studies is a multidisciplinary subject which examines from a global perspective the cultures and societies in various areas, including North America, Latin America, Europe, Russia and the Nordic countries. The multidisciplinary studies explore historical and social issues, international relations and contemporary cultures.
According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in research and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his or her field.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.  Holders of professorships shall also be required to have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.
The appointee to the professorship is expected to be qualified in area and cultural studies, be well-versed in one of the schools of thought within area and cultural studies and be able to provide evidence of the development of methods and theories in the field. The duties of the professorship include developing the field of area and cultural studies further and generating research cooperation projects together with international partners.
Holders of teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. Proficiency in the language of instruction can be demonstrated as laid down in the Regulations of the University of Helsinki. Moreover, in bilingual universities offering degrees both in Finnish and Swedish, holders of teaching and research positions must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish and Swedish. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens and Finnish citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he or she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency, as becoming proficient in Finnish or Swedish is important for the professor’s full integration into the workplace and Finnish society.
When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, participation in doctoral education, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.
The salary will be based on levels 8–10 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

Following on the success of the first  “Early Modern Digital Agendas”  institute—an intensive survey of the most current resources and methods in digital research to be found in July 2013—"Advanced Topics" is a second three-week NEH institute to be hosted by the Folger Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library.  Jonathan Hope , Professor of Literary Linguistics at the University of Strathclyde, will direct an advanced exploration of data creation and management to be followed by various forms of hands-on investigation, including text analytics, social network analysis, dimensionality reduction, research process design, and even historical reflection on the nature of "exemplarity" claims in humanistic argument. It is supported by a $175,000  Institutes for Advanced Topics  grant from the NEH's  Office of Digital Humanities .

Program Details
The  “Early Modern Digital Agendas: Advanced Topics”  Institute will meet from  15 June through 1 July 2015 , and admitted participants are expected to be in residence for the entire time. It will convene a technically advanced cohort of fifteen early modern digital humanists for scholarly assessment of the most effective tools by which data sets are gathered, curated, and analyzed. EMDA2015 will build in more time than its predecessor for application and experimentation with the tools to which its participants will be introduced; it will also encourage participants to bring their own data and, as often as is practical, process that data for analysis with the tools that the  visiting faculty  introduce. Details about the Institute's  curriculum  are available.
Participants will reflect on the ways DH expands the universe of possible questions that literary scholars can ask while new technologies produce exponentially larger bodies of evidence faster than ever before. Among the questions visiting faculty will pose and consider with the participants: What is "data"? What transformations lie behind statistical analysis? How is corpus-wide variation being treated? What are the principles of visualization? The aim is to enable participants not just to perform analysis, or curate data, but to understand the processes they engage in—where they enable, how they restrict, and how they might be improved. It remains the Folger's goal to ensure that DH practitioners question not only what is possible with digital tools, but why one would put them to certain uses, and at what costs.
Applicant Eligibility
This institute is designed primarily for college faculty and staff at U.S. institutions who study the texts, writing, and literature of early modern England. Qualified graduate students, independent scholars, and those employed by museums, libraries, historical societies, and other organizations are eligible provided they can effectively advance the teaching and research goals of the institute. Priority in admission will go to applicants who are United States citizens, residents of U.S. jurisdictions, or foreign nationals who have been residing in the United States or its territories for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline. Foreign nationals teaching abroad at non-U.S. chartered institutions are eligible to apply; those who have collaborated or who plan to collaborate with U.S. partners in digital initiatives will be more competitive applicants.
An applicant need not have an advanced degree in order to qualify; adjunct and part-time lecturers are eligible to apply, as are staff in digital humanities centers, librarians, and others who are interested in participating in a scholarly assessment of the most effective tools by which data sets are gathered, curated, and analyzed. Individuals may not apply to study with a director who is a current colleague or a family member. Institute selection committees are advised that only under the most compelling and exceptional circumstances may an individual participate in an institute with a director or a lead faculty member who has guided that individual’s research.
