Call for Applications: The David B. Larson Fellowship in Health and Spirituality—Dispatch January 6, 2015

The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress is now accepting applications for the David B. Larson Fellowship in Health and Spirituality. The application deadline is April 17, 2015.

The Larson Fellowship is a post-doctoral fellowship for advanced research in the field of health and spirituality. Made possible by a generous endowment from the International Center for the Integration of Health and Spirituality (ICIHS), the fellowship is named in honor of the Center's late founder, David B. Larson, an epidemiologist and psychiatrist, who focused on potentially relevant but understudied factors which might help in prevention, coping, and recovering from illness. The fellowship is designed to continue Dr. Larson’s legacy of promoting meaningful, scholarly study of these two important and increasingly interrelated fields. It seeks to encourage the pursuit of scholarly excellence in the scientific study of the relation of religiousness and spirituality to physical, mental, and social health.

Conducting full time research on-site at the Library of Congress, the fellowship provides an opportunity for a period of 6 to 12 months of concentrated use of the collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency in the Library's John W. Kluge Center. A stipend of $4,200 per month supports the Fellow.

Apply for the Larson Fellowship by visiting:

VISITING FELLOWSHIPS ON “MONSTERS AND MONSTROSITY” AT INSTITUTE FOR HUMANITIES RESEARCH, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
Institute for Humanities Research
Arizona State University
Deadline: 16 February 2015
Visiting Fellowships – Spring 2016 – “Monsters and Monstrosity.” Marking the multi-year celebration of the bicentennial of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the 2015-2016 IHR Fellows Program will investigate what the eruption or suppression of the monstrous shows us about ourselves and our possibilities as humans, and what the warnings, disruptions, and abjections of the monstrous show us about our restless cultural imaginary. The concept of monstrosity should be understood here as widely as possible. We invite humanities scholars (tenured or tenure-track) to apply for this fellowship to conduct research projects from multiple disciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives that illuminate and enrich our understanding of how monstrosity, abjection, and the ugly inform the practices of culture, history, and memory. Fellows contribute to the general enrichment of humanities scholarship through seminars and public lectures as well as regular meetings with other Fellows. The one-semester Visiting Fellowships (January through May) include a stipend of $25,000, an office, and support services.

Power-Relationships in Court Societies. Marriage, Concubinage, Friendship, Kinship, and Patronage in Historical Perspective
International Research Workshop
5-6 March 2015, German Historical Institute Paris

Deadline: 25 January 2015
The GHIP research group “Practices of Power and Interpersonal Relationships at Dynastic Centres (1500-1800)” invites applications for participation in its first workshop. All interpersonal relationships in courtly contexts have political implications; each and every one is an aspect of the “micro-physics of power”. The workshop offers an opportunity to analyse the meanings of interpersonal relationships within the societal networks of dynastic centres. We will endeavour to study court societies as a whole and not merely focus on the monarch or regent. Of particular interest are those features of social relationships, which can work to improve the participants’ position within the power structure of the court, e.g. through the provision of better access to material goods or decision-making processes. Which methodologies are useful to analyse practices of power and interpersonal relationships? When and why do these dynamics cause anxiety and resistance? What is the importance of the different types of social relationships for early modern state-building processes?

All graduate students currently working on related thesis topics are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in comparative and transcultural approaches, not only where they are concerned with Western European court societies, but also where they include dynastic centres outside of Europe. Participants will be asked to prepare a presentation of their work of 30 minutes in length. The specific contents of the paper are left to the discretion of the presenters, and there is, for example, the possibility of focusing on a particular chapter or section of the dissertation in order to demonstrate the practical application of a specific methodology or approach. Work-in-progress is welcome, and all presentations will be followed by an encouraging discussion.

To facilitate this, all participants will be asked to prepare a short, constructive critique of a peer’s paper, previous to attendance of the workshop. The event will be launched on 5 March 2015 with a lecture by Prof. Dr. Jeroen Duindam.

Travel costs for participants will be covered and accommodation can be provided. To apply please send a short cover message (including details of language skills), an abstract of the planned presentation of no more than 250 words, as well as a Curriculum Vitae to Pascal Firges ([email protected]). For any enquiries please contact Pascal Firges or Regine Maritz ([email protected]).

(Institute of Polish Philology, University of Białystok)

invite proposals for a conference:

NARRATING GEOGRAPHIC SPACE [Geograficzne przestrzenie utekstowione]

Białystok, Poland
June 11-12, 2015

The Department of Theory and the Anthropology of Literature
at UwB, in cooperation with UBC and UNC, invites proposals for
the fifth annual conference on space in literature as seen from
the perspective of historical poetics and literary theory:
“Narrating Geographic Space.”

Previous conferences explored the following topics: “Space
as a Category of Poetics” (2011); “Geography and Metaphor”
(2012); “Space and Senses” (2013); and “Geo(bio)graphical
Space in Literature” (2014). In 2015, we encourage academic
 inquiries into changing, transforming, and disappearing
spaces which can only be accessed through textual representation.
Inspired by the notion that – like the past – such places and
spaces can only be accessed through narration, this conference
seeks to interrogate the causative power of literary and cultural
texts, which not only describe specific geographic places, but
which can also preserve, and even develop, them in cultural
memory. We are also interested in exploring the performative
nature of literature that generates both specific and mythical
places.

Proposed topics include, but are not limited to:
• (Textual) narrative reconstructions of places, which have
disappeared due to human agency (war, historical and/or
political changes) or natural catastrophes or transformations;
• Cultural practices and forms of narrating absent places,
particularly those that are silenced, excluded, or experienced
traumatically or nostalgically;
• The cultural articulation of geographic space as experienced
mythically, symbolically, or in the Imaginary;
• The need for creating a multidimensional map of places,
which owe their existence and persistence in cultural memory
(national, local, familial, etc.) to narration;
• The poetics or rhetoric of absence in relation to space and
place;
• Narrated space as a commodity in a market driven economy;
• The cultural articulation of virtual space, and the virtual
articulation
of literary and cultural spaces.

Please email abstracts and contact information to [email protected].
The deadline for abstracts is February 15, 2015.

Presentations should be limited to 20 minutes. A peer-reviewed
publication inspired by the conference is anticipated. Length of
manuscripts should not exceed 40,000 characters with spaces.

The conference fee is PLN350 and covers conference materials
and meals. This fee will also help defer costs associated with
the post-conference publication. Hotel costs are not included in
this fee; however, the conference organizers will assist participants
in securing reservations.

Sincerely,
Prof. Bożena Karwowska, Associate Professor of Polish and Slavic
Studies, UBC

 Recognising Silence
The Exploring and Managing Silence Project

Tuesday 7th July – Thursday 9th July 2015
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom.

Call for Presentations:
Silence is powerful. When not expressed, feelings and thoughts build up an internal pressure, whether on the part of an individual or between members of a couple, family or group. Such pressure can lead to depression, resentment and anger, which can manifest as self-harm, family breakups due to work-life imbalances, domestic violence or even suicide. At the societal level, if one's voice is not heard and recognized, and if what one says is ignored or not incorporated into the decision-making process, further social dysfunction ensues, including the creation of bubbles and enclaves of minorities, an ever-growing inequality of contribution by individuals, and increasing levels of social stress and anxiety. The opposite of silence is the final scream of the suicide bomber. Paying more attention to silence might result in preventing the eruptions of frustration that leads to aggression, violence, and ultimately, to terrorism (such as 9/11).

The 1st International Interdisciplinary Conference on Exploring and Managing Silence focuses on recognizing silence in various contexts. We believe that silence is too complex a phenomenon to be defined in a prescriptive manner. So we are putting out a Call for Presentations from practitioners, academicians and professionals working in:

- Education at any level (primary through tertiary and post-graduate; vocational training)
- Health care (including mental health, chronic illness, elderly care, end-of-life care)
- Care of people with disabilities (including special needs children)
- Government and NGOs, especially with regard to interaction with Indigenous people
- Sustainable development
- Environmental sustainability
- Economics and business (especially with regard to interaction with Indigenous people
- Psychology
- Religion and spirituality

We are particularly interested in papers that address the following questions:

~How is silence understood in different contexts, by different parties, in different cultures, in different professions, in different disciplines?
~How is silence currently acknowledged, identified, measured, and valued by the different parties in a specific interaction (e.g., decision-making process, classroom, business transaction)?
~How does silence contribute to the process of meaning-making? How does what is not said fit alongside what is spoken? And how do people ascribe meaning to silence?
~Silence resides in the ‘in-between’ spaces: between words, between the lines, between persons. How do people enter into those in-between spaces? How does their presence in those spaces affect them and the interaction?

We would also like to consider silence in the arts:

~Silence in music: the evolution of the relationship between sound and silence in composition, silence as radicalism (John Cage, Miles Davis, etc.)
~Silence in poetry
~Silence in cinema: impact of silence on storytelling technique, image composition, mechanics of silent cinema, opportunities and challenges of the silent medium, masters of silent cinema, soundtracks and the use of silence in sound films
~Silence in performance: acting styles, mime, non-speech communication
~Architectural spaces and the creation of silence

And some other aspects of silence that are equally powerful:

~Silence and the law: regulatory provisions around health and safety standards, noise controls ordinances and architectural innovation to preserve silence
~Legality of silence: 5th Amendment of the US Constitution and other protections against self-incrimination
~Silence as what is not said or what cannot be said (testimony of Holocaust victims, silence after trauma)

Finally, the project will explore silence in religious and spiritual traditions, including:

~Quaker silence
~Silence as meditation and introspection
~Silence in mystical traditions (Catholic, Zen Buddhist, etc.)

The Steering Group welcomes the submission of proposals for short workshops, practitioner-based activities, performances, and pre-formed panels. We particularly welcome short film screenings; photographic essays; installations; interactive talks and alternative presentation styles that encourage engagement.

What to Send:
Proposals will also be considered on any related theme. 300 word proposals should be submitted by Friday 13th March 2015. If a proposal is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper of no more than 3000 words should be submitted by Friday 22nd May 2015. Proposals should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; proposals may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: Silence 1 Proposal Submission.

All abstracts will be at least double blind peer reviewed. Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

Organising Chairs:
Ram Vemuri and Nancy Billias:  [email protected]
Rob Fisher:  [email protected]

The conference is part of the Probing the Boundaries domain which aims to bring together people from different areas and interests to share ideas and explore innovative and challenging routes of intellectual and academic exploration. All proposals accepted for and presented at the conference must be in English and will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected proposals may be developed for publication in a themed hard copy volume(s). All publications from the conference will require editors, to be chosen from interested delegates from the conference.

Inter-Disciplinary.Net believes it is a mark of personal courtesy and professional respect to your colleagues that all delegates should attend for the full duration of the meeting. If you are unable to make this commitment, please do not submit an abstract for presentation.

For further details of the conference, please visit:

The World Wings International, Inc. Research Grant

Since its first international flight in 1927, Pan Am positioned itself as a world leader in American commercial aviation. Formed in 1959, World Wings International, Inc. (WWI) is an association of former Pan Am flight attendants that now dedicates itself to charitable activities.  This collection includes the administrative records of the organization as well as scrapbooks, photographs, membership and annual meetings files, correspondence, and financial records.

The World Wings International, Inc. Research Grant is open to advanced graduate students, independent scholars, and faculty who would like to use the organizational records for research. Priority will be given to research proposals that will result in publication in any media. Up to $2,000 will be awarded annually to support scholarly research using the World Wings International, Inc. Records held by the University of Miami Libraries’ Special Collections.

Prospective researchers are encouraged to explore new areas of scholarship and inquiry within the World Wings International, Inc. Collection at the University of Miami.  The collection is very rich and can support research in the areas of history, geography, business, sociology, gender studies, and more.  We also encourage creative writers to use these materials to inspire short stories, poetry, novels, and even art work. The research should further the image of World Wings International, Inc., and encourage further study into the role former Pan Am flight attendants had in the history of aviation, philanthropy, feminism, and women’s business history.

Grant awardees will be required to give a presentation to faculty, students, staff, and interested community members either during the time of their stay or at a convenient later date.

Application Procedures

Applicants must submit a proposal of no more than two pages describing their research project, include a curriculum vitae or résumé, and provide two letters of recommendation. A WWI Board Member will sit on the selection committee.

Application deadline is February 15, 2015.  (note: applications will be reviewed after deadline, and recipient will be announced one month after deadline.  The successful applicant will have one year to fulfill their grant requirement.  Any applicant failing to make arrangements to come to the University of Miami within the year allotted will forfeit their award).

CFP: "Las Hermanas: The Struggle is One," An Interdisciplinary Symposium at the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, March 19-21.

by Adrienne Ambrose
This interdisciplinary symposium  will honor the history, development, and legacy of Las Hermanas, a grassroots Latina movement formed 40 years ago to challenge and change the church and its role in society.  We encourage papers that will explore Las Hermanas and parallel religious-political movements, examining how they drew from the resources of both Catholicism and their larger cultural contexts to promote social justice within the church and beyond.  More broadly, we welcome contributions that address the question of how religious traditions and other institutions are embodied, challenged, and transformed.  In the words of biblical scholar Fr. Carlos Mesters,  “We may start from different points, but we arrive together.  The struggle is one struggle.”

Possible topics include  (but are not limited to):
Latinas in US religious history
The relationship between female agency, women’s empowerment, and social change
The sociological development of resistance movements
The liberative praxis, or reflective action, that grounds Latina/o theology
The role of narrative and/or lo cotidiano in Latina/o theology
Ecumenical perspectives on Latina/o theology
The central role of activism within liberation theology
The turn to “immediate history” and the changing role of cultural memory
The legacy of Las Hermanas
Art and music celebrating and deepening concepts
Paper proposals from all interested participants are welcome.  Alternative presentation formats are also encouraged (incorporating art, movement, audience participation, etc.).  Proposals should be approximately 350 words in length, and include a summary of the paper’s purpose, themes, and relationship to existing scholarship.    Please submit your proposal  and a copy of your CV by email to Adrienne Ambrose ([email protected]) by January 30, 2015.  Authors will be notified of acceptance by February 9, 2015.  Due to the tight schedule, submission deadlines are firm.

General Information

CALL FOR PAPERS: A CULTURE OF INSTITUTIONS - INSTITUTIONS OF CULTURE (ULBANDUS XVII)
Cultural production in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia has often been defined by the complex interactions between artists and the institutions that support and often seek to control them. From Pushkin’s fraught relationship with tsarist censorship to the peredvizhniki’s defiant break with the Imperial Academy of the Arts, from the Soviet state’s uneasy reception of the Nobel Prize to the market forces of the post-socialist publishing industry, institutions have loomed large over the cultural landscape of the region.
This issue of Ulbandus seeks to explore the various ties between artists and institutions, broadly construed, and the effect of these relationships on the ideology, distribution, and consumption of art and culture in Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. We are seeking submissions on topics including, but not limited to:
• state and/or private patronage systems;
• socialist Writers Unions and other cultural guilds;
• dissident movements;
• émigré presses;
• the influence of periodicals;
• world literary space and consecration;
• depictions of bureaucracy/bureaucrats/chinovniki;
• the artist as bureaucrat;
• censorship and self-censorship;
• organized religion in artistic production;
• unofficial art (Moscow Conceptualism, Fluxust East, A-Community, etc.);
• samizdat, tamizdat, and unofficial publications;
• institutional recognition;
• national and international literary prizes (Nobel, Shevchenko, Nike, etc.);
• museums, concert venues, and exhibition spaces;
• national school curricula;
• educational institutions (of artistic production, of criticism, of theory);
• film and television production studios;
• public and privately funded artistic and cultural festivals;
• E.U. cultural funding practices in Eastern Europe;
• normalization practices of state and private institutions;
• anti-institutional movements (Collective Action, “Hapsoc” series in Bratislava, etc.);
Ulbandus is a peer-reviewed journal catalogued on JSTOR and the MLA International Bibliography. It is edited and published by the graduate students at Columbia University’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. Since its founding in 1977, Ulbandus has published outstanding work from graduate students and established scholars. Ulbandus welcomes submissions of relevant new translations, original art, and reviews of relevant and recent books in the field as well as traditional scholarly articles from any related discipline.
Submissions should be no more than 8,000 words (book reviews: 1,000 words), including notes, and should follow the Chicago style guidelines.
All submissions and inquiries should be sent to [email protected]. Submission deadline is August 1, 2015. Early submissions are encouraged.
