CFP: Material Culture Symposium for Emerging Scholars
Very Bad Things: Material Culture and Disobedience
Call for Proposals—2015 Emerging Scholars Symposium
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library
Saturday, April 11, 2015
The Center for Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware invites submissions for papers to be given at the Thirteenth Annual Material Culture Symposium for Emerging Scholars.
What happens when a thing goes bad? What is an unruly object and how does it get that way? Can an object get out of control? Can it be disobedient? Some things go bad; are some things born bad? How do things express our own dissatisfaction and deviance?
We seek papers that explore the recalcitrance of things, papers that interrogate the way objects can reflect human frustration or discontent, and papers that investigate the moments when objects resist our intentions or confound our expectations. At these vital junctures, things expand beyond the limits of the human imagination, shaking up our sense of the world and our place in it. This conference will consider how objects unsettle the presumed docile or one-way dynamic between human actors and material things. We welcome presentations that explore material culture in relation to social and political protest, bad design, technological failures, artifacts that surprise, magical objects, hurtful places, the naughty, the broken, the lost, the painful, and the perverse. We encourage papers that reflect upon and promote an interdisciplinary discussion on the state of material culture studies today.
This conference is not bound by any temporal or geographical limits. Disciplines represented at past symposia include American studies, anthropology, archaeology, consumer studies, English, gender studies, history, museum studies, and the histories of art, architecture, design, and technology. We welcome proposals from graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and those beginning their teaching or professional careers.
Submissions: Proposals should be no more than 300 words and include the focus of your object-based research and the significance of your project. Relevant images are welcome.
Programs and paper abstracts from past symposia are posted here:
http://www.materialculture.udel.edu/emerging_scholars.html .
Send your proposal, with a current c.v. of no more than two pages, to
[email protected] .
Deadline: Proposals must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2014. Speakers will be notified of the committee’s decision in January 2015. Confirmed speakers will be asked to provide digital images for use in publicity and are required to submit their final papers by March 11, 2015. Travel grants will be available.

PHILHIST '15 / INTERACTIONS
DAKAM’s PHILHIST ’15 / II Philosophy Conference on 'Interactions' aims to a comparative re-reading of philosophical texts around the historical mechanisms of interaction and will take place at NHKM (Nâzım Hikmet Cultural Center) on May 14-16, 2015 .
The conference will be held at Nâzım Hikmet Cultural Center (NHKM), one of the most popular cultural centers in Istanbul.
Philosophy can be described as an interaction centre of infinite number of dynamics that progressed and differentiated by affecting each other throughout the history. Although the history of philosophy examines philosophers, texts and periods individually, it has also been the history of interactions, i.e. affecting and being affected. The historical, multifaceted identity of the philosophy was also shaped by the correlations in between the philosophy to other disciplines as well as among the philosophers, themselves.
All types of interaction (interactions in between different regions and lands, unexpected historical links, contact of individuals or even the concept of inter - textuality itself) can be defined as one of the central sources for the history of philosophy.
On a heterogeneous basis full of conflict and complementation, every idea causes reaction and every idea transforms itself by transforming another one. A re-evaluation of history of philosophy seems to be exciting with an interdisciplinary point of view in both partial and large scales.

Pirandello’s Visual Philosophy: Imagination and Thought across Media
Edited by Lisa Sarti (BMCC, The City University of New York)
and Michael Subialka (University of Oxford)
In recent years English-language scholarship on Pirandello has begun to explore new directions that complement but also complicate the critical tradition around this seminal Italian modernist. Reflected in conference topics in the US and UK, as well as articles in various journals, this work expands on the ways in which Pirandello’s production spans not only cultures and continents but also media and traditions of philosophical inquiry. At the same time, Italian-language publications have placed increasing emphasis on aspects of Pirandello’s production that put him in dialogue with the visual arts, such as his own work as an amateur painter. Our volume aims to draw on the rich areas opened by these new insights to update the English-language scholarship with a book publication that will ground an expanded approach to Pirandello in theoretical and interdisciplinary frameworks.
The volume is situated at the juncture of the inter-medial study of Pirandello’s works and the exploration of his thought and its position in his intellectual and artistic context. Drawing on intersections with media such as film, the visual arts (photography, painting, etc.), music, and performance traditions, we are especially interested in the importance of the visual imagination to the unfolding of Pirandello’s rich worldview. In this sense we aim to open new avenues of discourse around Pirandello’s thought, acknowledging the central role of typical Pirandellian themes such as the clashes of form/life, illusion/reality, identity/uncertainty, etc., but also enlarging the scope of the discussion.
With these aims in mind, the topics of interest for the volume include, but are not limited to:
- Pirandello’s participation in the visual arts and in other media
- Imagination, fantasy, and creation as visual processes; the relation of inner images to philosophical stances or ways of thinking and understanding; the imagistic presentation of conceptual content
- Modernist visuality, intellectual history and art history in relation to Pirandello’s visual thought
- Music (Pirandello’s works as operas, and Pirandello’s own uses of music)
- Existential drama and visual thought
- The “utopian” effort to escape reality through artistic means, and the troubles of such an effort
Interested contributors are asked to submit an abstract proposal of around 300 words to [email protected] no later than January 16, 2015. Proposals will be reviewed, and the editors will invite full manuscripts of approximately 7,000-9,000 words to be published in English (meaning contributors will need to ensure the fluency of their essays). Further details will be communicated to authors whose proposals are chosen for inclusion in the volume, which will be peer reviewed to guarantee the highest academic standards for publication.
