Smithsonian Libraries Research Opportunities 2015-2016
Situated at the center of the world’s largest museum complex, the Smithsonian Libraries is a vital part of the research, exhibition, and educational enterprise of the Institution. Each Smithsonian scholar engages in an individual voyage of discovery using the artifacts and specimens of the Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with the Libraries’ written and illustrated record of the past. The Libraries is uniquely positioned to help scholars understand the continuing vitality of this relationship, via exceptional research resources ranging from 13th-century manuscripts to electronic journals.
The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program awards stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months to support scholarly research in the Special Collections of the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, DC and New York, NY, in an extensive range of subject areas. Doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply.
Collections include printed materials on world’s fairs (19th and early 20th centuries); manufacturer’s commercial trade catalogs in the National Museum of American History Library (285,000 pieces representing 30,000 companies dating from the 19th and 20th centuries); natural history rare books in the Cullman Library (pre-1840 works on topics such as botany, zoology, travel & exploration, museums & collecting, geology, and anthropology); James Smithson’s library in the Cullman Library; air and space history in the National Air and Space Museum Library’s Ramsey Room (ballooning, rocketry, and aviation, late 18th to early 20th centuries); rare materials in European and American decorative arts, architecture, and design in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Library (18th to 20th centuries); and history of art and artists (exhibition catalogs, catalogues raisonnés, serials, dissertations and artists’ ephemera) at the American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery Library.
The Dibner Library Resident Scholar Program awards stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months to support scholarly research in the Special Collections of the Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology in Washington, DC. Doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply.
The Dibner Library has manuscripts and rare books dating primarily from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Collection strengths are in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, classical natural philosophy, theoretical physics (up to the early twentieth century), experimental physics (especially electricity and magnetism), engineering technology (from the Renaissance to the late 19th century), and scientific apparatus and instruments.
The Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program supports scholarly research into the legacy of Patrick Henry and his political circle, the early political history of Virginia, the history of the American Revolution, founding era ideas and policy-making, as well as science, technology, and culture in colonial America and the Early National Period.
The stipend for this long-term post-doctoral fellowship is $45,000 for nine consecutive months. Senior scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold a PhD by September 1, 2015. Resident scholars are expected to give at least one public lecture during the tenure of the fellowship as well as to show progress toward a publishable manuscript by the end of the fellowship period, and may also be asked to cooperate with the Smithsonian Libraries administration in planning scholarly programs.
Scholars must be in residence at the Smithsonian during the award period. The deadline for all programs is January 15, 2015 for appointments between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2016 . Research fellowships at Davis Center for Historical Studies, Princeton. The 2015/16 topic: “In the Aftermath of Catastrophe.”
During the academic years 2014/15 and 2015/16, the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies will focus on the topic of “In the aftermath of catastrophe.” What happens in the wake of cataclysmic experiences: war, civil war, genocide, imperial collapse, natural disaster? The aim in part is to understand processes of reconstruction but not only that. How was the experience of catastrophe remembered and memorialized; how was trauma conceived and dealt with; how was the post-catastrophic present understood in relation to the pre-disaster past? As always, we hope to address these questions from a wide variety of periods and places, from prehistory to the present and from all parts of the world.
The Center will offer a limited number of research fellowships for one or two semesters, running from September to January and from February to June. Early career scholars must have their doctoral degrees in hand at the time of the application. Fellows are expected to live in Princeton in order to take an active part in the intellectual interchange with other members of the Seminar. Funds are limited, and candidates are, therefore, strongly urged to apply to other grant-giving institutions as well as the Center if they wish to come for a full year.
To apply please link to: http://jobs.princeton.edu , requisition #1400477. The deadline for receipt of applications and letters of recommendation for fellowships for 2015/2016 is December 1, 2014. Please note that we will not accept faxed applications. Applicants must apply online and submit a CV, cover letter, research proposal, abstract of proposal, and contact information for three references. For further information about the applying for a Fellowship: please go to http://www.princeton.edu/dav/program/fellowship_information/
Princeton University is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Research Opportunities at the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center
Apps Due: 1 Dec 2014
The Lemelson Center Fellowship Program and Travel to Collections Award Program support projects that present creative approaches to the study of invention and innovation in American society. These include, but are not limited to, historical research and documentation projects resulting in dissertations, publications, exhibitions, educational initiatives, documentary films, or other multimedia products.
The programs provide access to the expertise of the Institution's research staff and the vast invention and technology collections of the National Museum of American History (NMAH). The NMAH Archives Center documents both individuals and firms across a range of time periods and subject areas. Representative collections include the Western Union Telegraph Company Records, ca. 1840-1994 and the Earl S. Tupper Papers, documenting Tupper, and his invention, Tupperware. In addition, the NMAH Library offers long runs of historical technology serials like Scientific American and American Machinist , and the American Trade Literature collection, which includes 300,000 catalogs, technical manuals, and advertising brochures for some 30,000 firms, primarily from 1880-1945. For a comprehensive catalog of objects, manuscripts, images and research materials available at the NMAH (and other Smithsonian units), see http://www.collections.si.edu/ .
The Lemelson Center invites applications covering a broad spectrum of research topics that resonate with its mission to foster a greater understanding of invention and innovation, broadly defined. However, the Center especially encourages project proposals that will illuminate the role of women inventors; inventors with disabilities; inventors from diverse backgrounds; or any inventions and technologies associated with groups that are traditionally under-represented in the historical record. Pertinent NMAH collections include the papers of Victor L. Ochoa, a Mexican-American aeronautical inventor; the papers of Dr. Patricia Bath, an African-American inventor of a patented cataracts treatment; the Safko International papers, documenting assistive technologies built for the physically disabled; and the HIV/AIDS and LGBT Reference Collections, which document innovative public health programs and associated technologies.
The Lemelson Center Fellowship Program annually awards 2 to 3 fellowships to pre-doctoral graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and other professionals who have completed advanced training. Fellows are expected to reside in the Washington, D.C. area, to participate in the Center's activities, and to make a presentation of their work to colleagues at the museum. Fellowship tenure is based upon the applicants’ stated needs (and available funding) up to a maximum of ten weeks. Stipends for 2015-2016 will be $630/week for pre-doctoral fellows and $925/week for post-doctoral and professional fellows. Applications are due December 1, 2014. For application procedures and additional information, see http://invention.smithsonian.org/resources/research_fellowships.aspx .** Researchers are encouraged to consult with the fellowship coordinator before submitting a proposal – contact historian Eric S. Hintz, Ph.D. at +1 202-633-3734 or [email protected] .
The Lemelson Center Travel to Collections Award Program annually awards 2 to 3 short-term travel grants to encourage the use of its invention-related collections. Awards are $150 per day for a maximum of 10 business days and may be used to cover transportation, living, and reproduction expenses; they are intended only for applicants who reside or attend school beyond commuting distance of the NMAH. Applications are due December 1, 2014 . See http://invention.smithsonian.org/resources/research_travel.aspx ** for application procedures and additional information. Researchers are encouraged to consult with the travel award coordinator before submitting a proposal – contact archivist Alison Oswald at +1 202-633-3726 or [email protected] .

https://networks.h-net.org/node/24029/discussions/51036/cfp-welfare-state-conference-berlin-9-10-july-2015
“Worlds of Welfare: An Interdisciplinary Conference at the Free University of Berlin”9-10 July 2015, Berlin, Germany Western welfarism has constituted statemaking in the most capacious sense; it has been both a culture and a politics, indeed a human event of epoch-making proportions, the more so retrospectively as it confronts renewed challenges post-2008. A fuller, clearer picture of the welfare state in Europe and North America—one better adapted to the conceptual and moral demands of the twenty-first century—can be won only if we consider the welfare state as a simultaneously transnational and whole-society endeavor, taking into account ties and transfers between and within borders, groups, networks and ideological registers. Thus prompted by the dual imperative of contemporary politics and developments in scholarship over the past fifteen years, this two-day conference at the Free University of Berlin aims to cull the latest research on the Western welfare state broadly conceived. Papers that take a transnational or comparative perspective and/or bridge the study of formal/official/elite governance with that of working-class or popular culture are particularly desired. We wish to foster a multilayered dialogue between scholars in the humanities and social sciences, above all in order to find ways to reconcile more ethnographic approaches, those “from below,” with the recent gains in transnational or global methodology that sometimes seem to discourage the former. Possible guiding questions include: What have been the social, cultural, intellectual, legal and political repercussions of ameliorative state intervention since the late nineteenth century, and to what extent did these repercussions in turn form new, likewise catalytic causal webs between states? Under what guises has modern welfarism appeared in Europe and North America, between colony and metropole or in the wake of decolonization? How has modern welfarism been thought, practiced and lived, whether by worker, bourgeois, industrialist, reformer or bureaucrat? What has modern welfarism meant as an experience for those who helped to make it, whether as its architects, recipients or opponents, and how did intellectual or physical mobility shape this experience? The conference will feature a keynote and four thematically organized panels, final composition dependent on paper proposals. Provisional emphases, however, are as follows: “Law, power and social/civil rights”; “Culture(s) of the welfare state?”; “Social reform and state intervention as transnational phenomena”; “Western welfarism transposed/from outside,” the latter with non-Western or colonial/postcolonial contexts in mind. The conference organizers are able to offer high-quality accommodation for participants at the conference venue, including all meals on both days. The conference venue is situated about a half-hour from the city center. The conference language will be English. Those interested in presenting should send an approximately 300-word paper proposal and c.v. to [email protected] by 10 January 2015.

Конкурсы проектных предложений для вузов в рамках программы Erasmus +
Erasmus+.

Call for articles for Temporalités n° 22 (2015/2) --
« Temporalités et mutations du monde russe et post-soviétique » -
“Temporalities and Mutations in the Russian and Post-Soviet World”
Coordination Natalia Leclerc (UBO) and Anne Le Huérou (Université Paris Ouest Nanterre, ISP, CERCEC)
Twenty-three years after the disappearance of the Soviet Union, the words and concepts with which to capture the reality of contemporary Russia have evolved. Within the interpretative framework of temporality, in other words a plural conception of human temporalities as opposed to an objectified concept of uniform and continuous time, various interpretations of the changes undergone compete with one another: if the notion of a revolutionary change has never caught on, approaches focusing on “the transition” have been rapidly superseded by other modes of apprehension using the concepts of path dependency, of transformations and mutations that go far beyond that of a simple change of regime, while producing novel configurations whose analysis requires the elaboration of the tools now being thought out. Other studies have brought to the fore the way different temporalities (economic time versus political time and societal time) overlap, further complexifying the analysis of these transformations.
How then are these evolutions and mutations represented? Which aspects of these representations relate to rupture, which to continuity?
Individual and collective temporalities, as well as economic, political and societal temporalities, need to be examined in their specificity, their own articulations and tensions. Ruptures and turning points need to be studied with particular care as they far from systematically correspond to what common sense considers to be key events. Regarding continuity, it can be apprehended through a return to Russian and Soviet history, in particular to the way this history is called upon as a source of models, contradictions or references. History thus inspires a reflexion on changes as they have been lived but also on the practices put in place within the framework of public or institutional policies.
History as it is told, or its stories, whether individual or collective, brings to light these ruptures and/or continuities. History as a formalization of collective memory is a hermeneutic activity which, in its more extreme manifestations, can go from interpretation to reinterpretation and falsification. Collective memory also implies the constitution of a collective patrimony, an institution today interpreted as a form of congealing. Parallel to the processes proper to the constitution of a collective memory, we need to consider those enabling the construction of individual memories, such as diaries or testimonies. This is what A. Yurchak suggests when he uses different types of sources and different disciplines to show, in Everything was forever, until it was no more, both the degree to which the late Soviet regime seemed eternal and that to which its end was expected and predictable. Personal writings and life recollections as sources of data for the social sciences regarding the changes that have affected the Russian world can also be considered as an axis of study to understand the role played by the past and its interpretation in the way the present and the future are being written. Furthermore, the study of everyday life could open onto an anthropological approach to the issue of the temporalities of the Russian world.
This history is both that of the Russian Empire before 1917 and that of the Soviet Union. In accounts for the “general public” of the changes occurring in contemporary Russia, there are discourses which highlight the return of sovietism, or the issue of empire – and conclude hastily with the idea that Russia lives on with its own forms of continuity, among others that of a strong central power. The analysis of discourses, representations and practices should enable the deciphering of the use of references to cycles within the context of the building of another system, of a reconfiguration, a new combination, which combines the old elements with the necessarily new changes.
Regarding the category of representation, it would also be interesting to study the role of myths, be they those believed in by Russians in Russia, or those the West builds itself about Russia. Myth has a founding function, one of identification but also of explanation, and has a long time horizon: how does it get written and what influence does it have on the building of the new Russian configurations? The very notion of myth needs examining anyway: creating a mythical configuration is certainly an ambition of those who wield power, but can political marketing alone give rise to such a configuration?
In the short term, one of the categories of time is that of rhythm and tempo: how does the power elite give Russian society its tempo? And how does the tempo thus imparted to short term action combine with the feeling, given by Vladimir Putin to Russian society, that long-term the country is heading for recovery, or even has already recovered, given Russia’s return to the fore in international matters for example (he management if the Ukrainian crisis could be an interesting case study from that point of view)? These considerations lead to another issue, that of the tempo Russia is allegedly imposing in the world by proceeding with changes contributing to the elaboration of a new world order, thus introducing uncertainties susceptible of rendering the temporalities of the post-Cord War era obsolete.
The tempo given by the power elite originates in internal politics in their institutional form, that is in the reforms voted then implemented during Putin’s presidency, a process whose calendar timing and scheduling is probably worth analsying. But it is also linked to the political leadership of Putin the man, with its vertical axis of power, which in return engenders resistance and revolt, the emergence of opposition or on the contrary movements supporting and defending the present balance of power. What can be observed regarding the use of social and networking media in the renewing or developing of modes of political mobilisation and how rare they reconfiguring political temporalities?
Place can also be given to the temporalities of crisis: confronted with critical issues, the power elite is either confrontational (the institutional crisis of October 1993 is an example) or caught up in a logic of appeasement.
In a general way, characterising the different temporalities at work in the discourses around contemporary Russia is a way of thinking about the temporalities generally associated with the regimes known as democratic , which account for most of Western societies, and show how they differ from other regimes. One can imagine taking a look at for example the temporalities proper to voting and electoral campaigns as well as to the alternation of power. The notion of temporality could also be explored in the short and the long term. It covers the relationship to time in all its diversity: social time and sociability in everyday life, the relationship to culture and that to politics.
As Temporalités is a pluri-disciplinary journal, papers can origin in the different disciplines of the humanities – sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, history, law, linguistics. The former list is not exhaustive. The journal gives priority to the publication of empirical research whose scope is clearly defined.
Proposals
Papers will be selected on the basis of proposals (maximum length 5000 characters), which need to reach the volume’s editors, Natalia Leclerc ( [email protected] ) and Anne Le Huérou ( [email protected] ), as well as the journal’s administrative secretary ( [email protected] ) by December 15 2014.

University of Helsinki, Finland
Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), Cultural Heritage Studies
Apply at latest on: Dec 5, 2014
Employer:
Faculty of Arts
Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies
The Faculty of Arts is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction. The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies ( http://www.helsinki.fi/phca/ ) belongs to the Faculty of Arts and has a strong profile in the multidisciplinary research and teaching of the humanities.
The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies invites applications for the position of
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CULTURAL HERITAGE STUDIES (TENURE TRACK)
The field of the assistant professorship is cultural heritage studies.
In the tenure track system, the University employs as assistant professors talented, motivated academics who have completed their doctoral degree within the last ten years and have since accrued academic and other relevant qualifications. See University of Helsinki Tenure Track system.
Cultural heritage studies focus on historical continuity, transnationalisms and symbolic meanings in linguistic, material, intellectual and visual/auditory culture. The field embraces questions related to philosophy and cultural theories about similarity and difference, the processes of cultural transmission and the social aspects of oral history.
The assistant professor of cultural heritage studies will work in the multidisciplinary environment of the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies. The Department offers a Bachelor’s level module in cultural heritage studies that includes archaeology, folklore studies, ethnology, art history and ethnomusicology. The assistant professor is in charge of developing this study module and its teaching.
The assistant professor of cultural heritage studies will cooperate with various Finnish and international memory organisations specialised in oral history (museums, archives, libraries) as well as with foundations and associations. Digitisation and infrastructure projects will support the work.
The University will assist the appointee in national and international networking as well as publishing in international forums. The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies employs a teaching and research staff of about 125, among them a number of nationally and internationally distinguished top scholars in their fields. Thus the appointee will have the opportunity to receive critical and versatile mentoring. He or she can also accumulate teaching experience and increase his or her competence with studies in university pedagogy.
The assistant professor is expected to have an innovative vision for the development of the field. He or she is also expected to provide teaching with an interdisciplinary approach and to obtain external funding for international research projects that will advance the field. The academic qualifications and teaching experience of applicants will be considered when making the selection. Additional merit will be granted for international and interdisciplinary experience as well as experience in obtaining research funding.
Holders of teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. Proficiency in the language of instruction can be demonstrated as laid down in the Regulations of the University of Helsinki. Moreover, in bilingual universities offering degrees both in Finnish and Swedish, holders of teaching and research positions must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish and Swedish. According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens and Finnish citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he or she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency, as becoming proficient in Finnish or Swedish is important for the professor’s full integration into the workplace and Finnish society.
The salary will be based on level 7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
Applicants are requested to enclose with their applications the following English-language documents:

2) A report (max. 5 pages) on pedagogical expertise (teaching philosophy, previous teaching experience, pedagogical skills, the ability to use and develop teaching materials, other teaching merits) or alternatively, an academic portfolio containing equivalent information (see http://www.helsinki.fi/hum/english/administration/resources/skills/index.htm )
3) A report (max. 3 pages) on the applicant’s research activities (including activities in scientific communities, the acquisition of research funding and international scholarly work) and on how the applicant intends to develop research and teaching in his or her field, if appointed
4) A numbered list of those publications with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate his or her competence and merits; the list should follow the Faculty instructions for classifying publications (see http://www.helsinki.fi/hum/english/administration/resources/publications.htm ).

Applicants are kindly asked to be prepared, upon the Faculty’s request, to submit 10 publications for assessment after the application period. Applicants should indicate these documents on their list of publications.
The application must be addressed to the Faculty of Arts. The Faculty requests that the application and its enclosures be emailed as a single pdf file to the Registry of the University of Helsinki at hy-kirjaamo(at)helsinki.fi. The deadline for applications is 5 December 2014. (The Registry closes at 15.45 local Helsinki time.)
