Call for Interns for the 2015 Season

Civitella is seeking interns for the 2015 residency season.  Candidates should be able to commit to a minimum of six weeks between the start of May and mid-November, and availability should correspond as closely as possible to the start and end dates of the residency sessions.  Preference will be given to candidates with longer periods of availability in order to maintain as much consistency as possible during the season.  The dates for our four 2015 residency sessions are as follows.

Session 1: May 6 to June 15
Session 2: June 19 to July 28
Session 3: August 13 to September 21
Session 4: September 25 to November 5

Interns are a treasured and integral part of Civitella's community and daily life. They provide assistance with library functions, the meal program, excursions, presentations, and exhibitions at the Center. Our interns work with both the Executive Director and the Program Coordinator on a variety of special projects built around individual interests, experience, goals, and skills. The Civitella internship is a true formative experience stressing public speaking, teamwork, problem solving, and program planning.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Prepare rooms and equipment for Fellows' arrivals
- Provide transportation for Fellows and Guests to and from local train stations, airports, and bus stations
- Distribute orientation information
- Assist Fellows in their work as requested (Music, Visual Arts, and Writing)
- Run errands
- Greet guests and give tours of the facilities
- General office work and assistance
- Prepare for events, including set up, technical assistance, and clean up
- Research and introduce Fellows and Director's Guests for presentations
- Assist kitchen staff with meal planning and clearing tables

- General assistance to the Executive Director, Program Coordinator, the Office Manager, the kitchen, and the Fellows

Skills and Requirements
Working knowledge of English and Italian is necessary as is a valid driver's license. Interns must be able to drive a large standard stick shift vehicle. We prefer interns with advanced computer skills, additional languages, and some experience in the arts, in study or work abroad. We are most interested in those who are self-motivated, independent, work well in a group/team environment, have the flexibility to deal with an unpredictable set of tasks varying day to day, and are able to deal with an intensely motivated community in an idyllic but somewhat isolated place of work. An ideal intern maintains a positive, willing, and helpful attitude and should be open and diplomatic in interactions with people of diverse backgrounds and ages.

Compensation
We offer the selected candidates round trip airfare and transportation (from place of residence to Civitella), lodging and meals for the period of the internship and a stipend for incidental expenses of $150 per week.

How To Apply
Applications must include a letter of intent, an up-to-date CV, two references with their relationship to you and full contact information (phone, email). Your letter of intent should explain why the internship would be meaningful to you, how you might best contribute to the Civitella community, and what past experiences have prepared you for the work described above. Do you meet all the requirements listed? All applications must be sent via email by December 31 to [email protected]. We review applications in January and conduct Skype interviews in February. Notification will be sent to all candidates in March.

Call for Papers: Epistemologies of In-Betweenness:
East Central Europe and the World History of Social
Science, 1890-1945

Workshop
Institut für Ost- und Südeuropaforschung Regensburg
29-30 May, 2015

Convenors: Katherine Lebow, Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for
Holocaust Research; Małgorzata Mazurek, Department of History,
Columbia University; Joanna Wawrzyniak, Institute of Sociology,
Warsaw University; Ulf Brunnbauer, Institut für Ost- und
Südeuropaforschung Regensburg/Universität Regensburg.

The period ca. 1890-1945 saw both the crystallization of modern
social scientific disciplines and some of the most profound crises
of the social, political, and economic systems they were devised to
study. This workshop asks how intellectuals’ sustained engagement
with these crises in the “shatterzones” of East Central Europe
shaped the development of social science between the end of the
nineteenth century and the onset of the Cold War.

Conceived as a follow-up to the workshop “Malinowski’s Children:
East Central European ‘Betweenness’ and Twentieth-Century Social
Science” (Heyman Center for the Humanities, Columbia University,
May 2014), the present workshop aims to develop new approaches to
the study of social science history. Besides decentering classic
narratives of scientific innovation and dissemination focusing on “the
West,” it seeks to historicize key concepts that structure our
understanding of the region’s history—concepts that took shape
during this period, but remained unstable throughout, and that were
themselves part of that history.

As the birthplace of many canonical social scientific thinkers, East
Central Europe has hardly been neglected in studies of social science
history. The region has rarely, however, been considered as a
historical “locality” of knowledge-creation—that is, a node in the
mediation, translation, and transformation of social science per se.
Historically, East Central Europe was a highly ambiguous terrain in
a modern global imaginary characterized (and categorized) by
asymmetries of power. To the extent that social science arose in
response to such asymmetries (anthropology vis-à-vis imperialism/
colonialism, sociology vis-à-vis capitalism/class, psychology vis-à-vis
sexuality/gender, etc.), we are interested in how East Central
European scholars problematized their region’s “in-betweenness,”
its non-normative status in the modern world. We are interested, too,
in how East Central European scholars—confronted with the collapse
of empires, the crisis of the global economic system, and the rise of
nationalism and racism—understood their disciplines’ human and
historical potential. Would social science serve to naturalize and
legitimate authority, or was its purpose to demystify and liberate?

Papers may address a wide range of topics, including but not
limited to the transnational circulation of people and ideas
(biographies on the move; the translation of concepts from the
local to the global, and vice-versa); competing historical
frameworks and chronologies of social science history (Western
vs. East Central European; Eurocentric vs. non-Eurocentric);
regionally distinct fields of social research such as nationalism
studies or Jewish social science; shifting deployments of
specific concepts, methods, or epistemologies (“backwardness,”
“cosmopolitanism,” “unevenness,” humanism vs. positivism);
as well as dead ends and failures, paths not taken, and repressed
or forgotten disciplinary histories.

Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts of
approximately 500 words and their c.v. Submissions should
include name, affiliation and contact details. The deadline for
submissions is December 1, 2014. For more infothe conference, or to submit an abstract, please email the
organizing committee at:

[email protected],
[email protected] or
[email protected].

Conference participants will be asked to submit original papers (max.
10000 words) in English no later than May 15, 2015. The papers will
be pre-circulated among all participants to leave time for discussion
at the conference.

The conference is supported by the Graduate School for East and
Southeast European Studies (University of Regensburg, LMU Munich),
the Institut für Ost- und Südeuropaforschung Regensburg and the
Department of History, Columbia University.

Journal Connexe

Call for papers
War Spoliations and Cultural Transfers: The Case Study of Soviet Cinema (1939-1949)

Guest editor: Éric Aunoble (University of Geneva)

The research program CINESOV, sponsored by the french National agency for research (ANR), focuses on soviet cinema during the Second world war. In this frame was already organized an international conference about Soviet Film Industry the Second World War (Moscow, june 2014) and several scientific events are planned in the near future, about the Holocaust filmed by the Soviets (Paris, january 2015) and about Soviet War Propaganda on the Movie Screen (Toulouse, march 2015).

It is also necessarry to set the history of Soviet cinema during the Second World War in the frame of European history and to highlight the issues of transfers and seizures, better known when concerning other objects. This is the aim of a special issue of the journal Connexe.

The question of seizures by the Soviets can be approached in a variety of cases: Baltics and Poland (1939 and 1944), Germany from May 1945, Manchuria in September 1945 (seizure of Japanese films).

The seizure and transfer of movies are related to the distribution policy on Soviet and German screens until 1949 (decisions about releases, cut-offs, subtitles or dubbing...). We will also study the influence of foreign movies (American and German in the USSR, Soviet in Germany) on the public at the end of the war, in a context of domestic production shortage. One can also wonder how American movies reached in the USSR, some being seized, others lend-leased by Hollywood majors in the frame of their commercial strategy in Eastern Europe. Seizures of equipment is another aspect on which historiography didn't focus yet, especially in Germany, with the dismantling of the UFA. We would like to assess the importance of seizures,

to know how it was allocated between Soviet studios and understand the consequences of that process for restarting production in occupied Germany.

All of these informations would be an important contribution to the developing historiography of war spoliation while highlighting an unknown aspect of cultural exchanges in Europe during the Second World War.

Proposed contributions (title, name, institutional affiliation, one page summary and bibliography) should be sent to  [email protected] before 15 january 2015.

In french or in english, the selected articles must be submitted by 15 june 2015.

Connexe: around the post-communist space. The journal published by the Institute for Sociology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Global Studies Institute of the Université de Genève aims to connect associated disciplines and research objectives, to merge interconnected fields, to capture simultaneously the deviant and the common, the singular and the whole, the present and the future, the regional and the transnational.
