"Giving Voice to Cultures: Practices of Russia-Britain Cross-
Cultural Communication in the 21st Century"

The question of intercultural contact between Russia and Britain
in the past centuries has been widely studied across disciplines.
However, the 21st century – the epoch of intensified globalisation
and transnational mobility – has produced new models of giving
voice to cultures intended for exchange and consumption. The
contemporary period has put its own mark on the ways of
construction and sharing cultural knowledge of a foreign place
and facilitated the emergence of new behaviours and
subjectivities. A variety of intercultural links between Russia
and the UK have grown to include various patterns of migration
and tourism as well new forms of business, academic and
cultural contacts. This takes place against the unprecedented
accessibility of information including a plethora of texts and
images and a growing intensity of internet communication. In
both countries, spaces of domestication of respectively Russian
and British cultures and hybrid cultural forms are emerging.
Contemporary patterns and practices of giving voice to cultures
require new approaches to the British-Russian inter-cultural
dialogue. The conference sets out to explore practices of cross-
cultural communication between Russia and Britain in the 21st
century. It focuses on the forms and systems of meaning making
in a variety of cultural fields in dialogue. We expect that the
conference will address the ways of mutual representations and
cross-cultural experiences of the Russians and British expressed
in the media, literature, films, theatre; the translation of cultures
in art exhibitions, concerts and other art forms; linguistic and
cultural exchange in diasporas, digital communities and networking
sites; tourism practices and discourses (travel guides, blogs,
phrasebooks, etc.); questions of linguistic and cultural
commoditization, spaces of cultural exchange, and related
themes.
Approaches including socio-cultural linguistics, discourse studies,
media and new media studies, cultural anthropology, theatre,
film, visual studies, diaspora, tourism studies, and related
disciplines are welcome.
The conference will explore (but not exclusively) the following
themes:
• Approaches to the UK-Russian cross-cultural communication
in the 21 century.
• Narratives of Russia and Russianness in Britain / of Britain
and Britishness in Russia (national and transnational television,
travel programmes, films, theatre, performances, music, art,
literature including travel writing, Internet resources, blogs,
communities and networking sites, etc.).
• Literary and non-literary translation as a cross-cultural
practice.
• Sites of cultural exchange and domestication.
• Migration as linguistic and cultural experience. Russian
diaspora in the UK as a site of cultural exchange and cultural
hybridity.
• Holidaying and tourism as forms of cultural exchange
(constructing and consuming “authenticity”; experiential tourism;
visiting/seeing global events: Olympic games, Championships
and festivals, etc.)
• Discourses of consumption (shopping, dining, souvenir
culture, etc.)
• Linguistic and cultural commoditization.
• Russia's cross-cultural exchanges with other cultures:
differences and similarities to the UK.
We invite proposals for full paper panels, individual papers and
roundtables. Proposals including paper abstracts of 250 words
accompanied by a short CV are to be submitted by no later
than 15 of accepted papers will be expected to register for the conference
by the pre-registration deadline of 15 October. All participants are
expected to submit a full version of their paper by 30 October
2014.
We expect that we would be able to offer a limited number of
travelling grants.
Working languages of the conference are English and Russian.
The conference will take place at The Princess Dashkova Russian
Centre, the University of Edinburgh, 14 Buccleuch Place,
Edinburgh.

Normativity and German Idealism: Contemporary Perspectives

The aim of the conference is to examine whether resources drawn from the German Idealist tradition help address important questions about the nature of normativity. As recent work by Christine Korsgaard and Robert Brandom shows this is a fertile territory.
We construe the topic of normativity broadly to include epistemology and theories of meaning, moral and political philosophy, aesthetics, and theories of practical reasoning and action.
We would especially welcome submissions addressing anything from the following non-exhaustive list topics:
• how we justify to ourselves and to others what is good to do or to believe
• what are norms and what are reasons
• modalities of normativity
• how reasons guide beliefs, actions, values
• reasons and Reason
• how does it mean to think of oneself as a rational being
• normativity and freedom

Call for Papers for the Conference
Russian Cinema since 1991, disruption and perpetuation of heritage
that will take place on December 10-12 2014

Organized by the Laboratory ESTCA (Université Paris 8), l’Ecole nationale supérieure Louis Lumière, l’IRCAV (Université Paris 3), l’Université d’Aberyswyth.
The project is supported by Labex Arts H2H.
The profound aesthetical, economic and political changes that occurred in the Soviet cinema at the moment of the Perestroika have been studied by many researchers in Russia as well as in France and Anglophone countries mostly in the years that followed this social-economic and political upheaval There also existed studies concentrated on the process of deconstruction of the Soviet cinema in the years preceding the Perestroika, whether it concerned the system of production and censure or interactions between the film-makers and the system.
Russian post-Soviet cinema have been already existing for 20 years and presents an object of research that can bring about a new approach and yield more profound and specific results than before, and helps to outline the enlarged directions of the future research.
The conference is preceded by two events opening preliminary reflections on the subject: a workshop of May 5 in the National Institue of History of Art of distributors and academics concerning the distribution of the Russian films in France and a round table of producers and film-directors during th Week of the Russian Cinema in Paris on November 15 in the theater L’Arlequin. The Week will be an occasion for the French public to see more recent films that rarely cross the boarders and to meet their makers.
The goal of the present conference is to bring together researchers around the principal issues in the studies of the contemporary Russian cinema and to make an assessment in terms of disruption and perpetuation of heritage.
At the conference we would like to embrace all the aspects of the phenomenon, economical and historical as well as aesthetical ones.
Papers might deal with the following domains:
1.Film production and its structures, with a focus on the following subjects: economical contingencies that change radically after the collapse of the USSR and their influence on the film production and script-writing and aesthetical approach; the place of a producer and relations with TV; his new role in the ever-changing economy undergoing frequent reforms; issues and stakes of co-production; expansion of regional production and the emergency of new active studios in the provinces (Novosibirsk, Yakutia, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Khanti-Mansiisk); the place of old studios (Mosfilm, Lenfilm). Another point of interest is the relationship with the Soyuz Kinematografistov (Union of Cinematographers) and Kinosoyuz.
2. Exploitation and distribution of films in the situation of enlarged circulation in a new global context: a new system of film distribution and the relations with cinema managers; the issues of privatization; the exploitation of the contemporary Russian cinema on the territory of Russia after the arrival of multiscreen cinemas; the role of art-house films, the status of movie theaters yesterday and today, cartography of movie theaters, the DVD market and the role of the Internet.
3. Technological innovations: The technological disruption of the last 20 years and how this redefined the relationships between the artists and the State, the role of digital technologies.
4. The trajectories of film-makers who began filming in the Soviet period and had to readjust to the new context in terms of politics, production and distribution.
5. Criticism of the contemporary Russian cinema: perpetuation of the Soviet-period tradition and re-invention in the critical appreciation of films.
6. Position of the cinema in the global context: the role of festivals, accessibility of the Russian films and their circulation in a more globalized universe.
7. Film aesthetic: aesthetic aspects of art-house, commercial and genre cinema.

The Fifth RefoRC Conference 2015 will be held May 7-9, 2015 and will hosted by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The conference is open to individual short paper presentations (20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion) and to thematic sessions of two or three short papers. It is also possible to attend the conference without presenting a paper. While we encourage papers on the conference theme, papers can focus on all disciplines related to the 16th century reformations, such as arts, philosophy, law, history, theology etc., independent of the theme of the plenary papers.
Short paper proposals and registrations can be submitted via the registration form at http://www.refo500.nl/leuven . Short paper proposals are welcome before February 15, 2015.
Theme of Plenary Papers: the theme of the plenary papers is: “Crossing Borders: Transregional Reformations.”
General communication of the conference is in English, but also papers in French and German will be welcomed. Presenters who prefer to give their paper in French or German, are invited to provide the audience with an English summary of about 150-200 words.

Объем текста не должен превышать 0,5 печ. листа (20 тыс. знаков с учетом пробелов и ссылок). Ссылки затекстовые (ГОСТ Р 7.0.5–2008), нумерация автоматическая. Основному тексту доклада должны предшествовать резюме (400-600 знаков с пробелами каждое) и ключевые слова (по 8-10 слов или словосочетаний) на русском и английском языках, включая название доклада на английском языке. Расходы на проезд и проживание участников конференции не оплачиваются.

Проект Stepic объявляет конкурс Stepic Challenge на создание онлайн-курсов на русском и английском языках.
Заявки принимаются от преподавателей учебных учреждений, а также от индивидуальных авторов, не аффилированных с образовательным учреждением, однако имеющих опыт преподавания. Подать заявку может как индивидуальный автор, так и команда.
Конкурс открыт для онлайн-курсов по любым академическим предметам.
Специальные номинации:
Лучший курс по компьютерным наукам;
Лучший базовый курс, направленный на аудиторию учащихся 10-11 классов и студентов 1-2 курсов вузов;
Лучший курс для подготовки к тестам ГИА и ЕГЭ;
Лучший курс по современным методикам преподавания.
Заявки принимаются до 25 августа 2014 года.
Заявки будут рассматриваться по мере поступления в 2 этапа:
1 этап, 1 июля - 25 августа: первичный отбор заявок организаторами конкурса. Отобранные заявки будут вывешены для открытого голосования на сайт конкурса;
2 этап, 1 - 15 сентября: отбор вышедших в полуфинал заявок членами жюри. Жюри будет учитывать итоги открытого голосования.
Победители конкурса будут объявлены 22 сентября.
Десять победителей получат финансовые гранты для реализации своих идей (30 000 - 360 000 рублей в зависимости от объема и языка курса), а также персональную экспертную поддержку от организаторов конкурса. Жители Санкт-Петербурга смогут бесплатно воспользоваться услугами профессиональной студии для записи онлайн-курсов. Создатели курсов сохраняют за собой авторские права. Все курсы и материалы, созданные при грантовой поддержке по результатам конкурса, лицензируются для свободного использования на условиях лицензии Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0.

Junior research talents of all disciplines from abroad are given the opportunity to establish working groups of their own at German research institutions.
The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award recognises outstanding talent and creative research approaches with exceptional conditions: With an award amount of up to 1.65 million EUR each winner receives valuable starting capital to spend five years pursuing an innovative research project at a research institute of his or her choice – untroubled by administrative constraints. In addition, the establishment of their own junior research team enables the award winners to lay an important foundation for a promising academic career at a very early stage. Eight awards are expected to be granted. The programme is funded by
the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Грант Фонда предоставляется российской научной организации, российской образовательной организации высшего образования на безвозмездной и безвозвратной основе по результатам конкурса на условиях, предусмотренных Фондом.
Размер одного гранта составляет
* в 2014 году от 10 (десяти) до 30 (тридцати) млн. рублей,
* в 2015 году – от 90 (девяноста) до 270 (двухсот семидесяти) млн. рублей,
* в остальные годы – от 50 (пятидесяти) до 150 (ста пятидесяти) млн. рублей ежегодно. Организация должна обеспечить в течение всего периода практической реализации программы предоставление ежегодного софинансирования в размере не менее 25 (двадцати пяти) про центов от объема ежегодного финансирования со стороны Фонда. Организация имеет право подать только одну заявку для участия в данном конкурсе. Не допускается представление в Фонд программы, предусматривающей осуществление мероприятий (проектов), аналогичных по содержанию проектам, одновременно поданным научным коллективом, осуществляющим исследования на базе организации, или организацией на конкурсы Фонда, иных научных фондов или организаций, либо реализуемых до момента подачи заявки научным коллективом, осуществляющим исследования на базе организации, или организацией за счет средств фондов или организаций, государственного (муниципального) задания.
Условием предоставления гранта является обязательство организации сделать результаты своих научных исследований общественным достоянием, опубликовав их в рецензируемых российских и зарубежных научных изданиях. Другие условия конкурса указываются в конкурсной документации.
Заявки на конкурс представляются по установленным конкурсной документацией формам в двух в видах – электронном (через Информационно-аналитическую систему Фонда ( ИАС) в информационно-коммуникационной сети «Интернет» по адресу http://grant.rscf.ru ) и печатном (распечатанном из ИАС), содержание которых должно быть идентичным.

The question of intercultural contact between Russia and Britain
in the past centuries has been widely studied across disciplines.
However, the 21st century – the epoch of intensified globalisation
and transnational mobility – has produced new models of giving
voice to cultures intended for exchange and consumption. The
contemporary period has put its own mark on the ways of
construction and sharing cultural knowledge of a foreign place
and facilitated the emergence of new behaviours and
subjectivities. A variety of intercultural links between Russia
and the UK have grown to include various patterns of migration
and tourism as well new forms of business, academic and
cultural contacts. This takes place against the unprecedented
accessibility of information including a plethora of texts and
images and a growing intensity of internet communication. In
both countries, spaces of domestication of respectively Russian
and British cultures and hybrid cultural forms are emerging.
Contemporary patterns and practices of giving voice to cultures
require new approaches to the British-Russian inter-cultural
dialogue. The conference sets out to explore practices of cross-
cultural communication between Russia and Britain in the 21st
century. It focuses on the forms and systems of meaning making
in a variety of cultural fields in dialogue. We expect that the
conference will address the ways of mutual representations and
cross-cultural experiences of the Russians and British expressed
in the media, literature, films, theatre; the translation of cultures
in art exhibitions, concerts and other art forms; linguistic and
cultural exchange in diasporas, digital communities and networking
sites; tourism practices and discourses (travel guides, blogs,
phrasebooks, etc.); questions of linguistic and cultural
commoditization, spaces of cultural exchange, and related
themes.
Approaches including socio-cultural linguistics, discourse studies,
media and new media studies, cultural anthropology, theatre,
film, visual studies, diaspora, tourism studies, and related
disciplines are welcome.
The conference will explore (but not exclusively) the following
themes:
• Approaches to the UK-Russian cross-cultural communication
in the 21 century.
• Narratives of Russia and Russianness in Britain / of Britain
and Britishness in Russia (national and transnational television,
travel programmes, films, theatre, performances, music, art,
literature including travel writing, Internet resources, blogs,
communities and networking sites, etc.).
• Literary and non-literary translation as a cross-cultural
practice.
• Sites of cultural exchange and domestication.
• Migration as linguistic and cultural experience. Russian
diaspora in the UK as a site of cultural exchange and cultural
hybridity.
• Holidaying and tourism as forms of cultural exchange
(constructing and consuming “authenticity”; experiential tourism;
visiting/seeing global events: Olympic games, Championships
and festivals, etc.)
• Discourses of consumption (shopping, dining, souvenir
culture, etc.)
• Linguistic and cultural commoditization.
• Russia's cross-cultural exchanges with other cultures:
differences and similarities to the UK.
We invite proposals for full paper panels, individual papers and
roundtables. Proposals including paper abstracts of 250 words
accompanied by a short CV are to be submitted by no later
than 15 of accepted papers will be expected to register for the conference
by the pre-registration deadline of 15 October. All participants are
expected to submit a full version of their paper by 30 October
2014.
We expect that we would be able to offer a limited number of
travelling grants.
Working languages of the conference are English and Russian.

Russian Cinema since 1991, disruption and perpetuation of heritage
that will take place on December 10-12 2014

Organized by the Laboratory ESTCA (Université Paris 8), l’Ecole nationale supérieure Louis Lumière, l’IRCAV (Université Paris 3), l’Université d’Aberyswyth.
The project is supported by Labex Arts H2H.
The profound aesthetical, economic and political changes that occurred in the Soviet cinema at the moment of the Perestroika have been studied by many researchers in Russia as well as in France and Anglophone countries mostly in the years that followed this social-economic and political upheaval There also existed studies concentrated on the process of deconstruction of the Soviet cinema in the years preceding the Perestroika, whether it concerned the system of production and censure or interactions between the film-makers and the system.
Russian post-Soviet cinema have been already existing for 20 years and presents an object of research that can bring about a new approach and yield more profound and specific results than before, and helps to outline the enlarged directions of the future research.
The conference is preceded by two events opening preliminary reflections on the subject: a workshop of May 5 in the National Institue of History of Art of distributors and academics concerning the distribution of the Russian films in France and a round table of producers and film-directors during th Week of the Russian Cinema in Paris on November 15 in the theater L’Arlequin. The Week will be an occasion for the French public to see more recent films that rarely cross the boarders and to meet their makers.
The goal of the present conference is to bring together researchers around the principal issues in the studies of the contemporary Russian cinema and to make an assessment in terms of disruption and perpetuation of heritage.
At the conference we would like to embrace all the aspects of the phenomenon, economical and historical as well as aesthetical ones.
Papers might deal with the following domains:
1.Film production and its structures, with a focus on the following subjects: economical contingencies that change radically after the collapse of the USSR and their influence on the film production and script-writing and aesthetical approach; the place of a producer and relations with TV; his new role in the ever-changing economy undergoing frequent reforms; issues and stakes of co-production; expansion of regional production and the emergency of new active studios in the provinces (Novosibirsk, Yakutia, Ekaterinburg, Kazan, Khanti-Mansiisk); the place of old studios (Mosfilm, Lenfilm). Another point of interest is the relationship with the Soyuz Kinematografistov (Union of Cinematographers) and Kinosoyuz.
2. Exploitation and distribution of films in the situation of enlarged circulation in a new global context: a new system of film distribution and the relations with cinema managers; the issues of privatization; the exploitation of the contemporary Russian cinema on the territory of Russia after the arrival of multiscreen cinemas; the role of art-house films, the status of movie theaters yesterday and today, cartography of movie theaters, the DVD market and the role of the Internet.
3. Technological innovations: The technological disruption of the last 20 years and how this redefined the relationships between the artists and the State, the role of digital technologies.
4. The trajectories of film-makers who began filming in the Soviet period and had to readjust to the new context in terms of politics, production and distribution.
5. Criticism of the contemporary Russian cinema: perpetuation of the Soviet-period tradition and re-invention in the critical appreciation of films.
6. Position of the cinema in the global context: the role of festivals, accessibility of the Russian films and their circulation in a more globalized universe.
7. Film aesthetic: aesthetic aspects of art-house, commercial and genre cinema.

The Fifth RefoRC Conference 2015 will be held May 7-9, 2015 and will hosted by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The conference is open to individual short paper presentations (20 minutes presentation, 10 minutes discussion) and to thematic sessions of two or three short papers. It is also possible to attend the conference without presenting a paper. While we encourage papers on the conference theme, papers can focus on all disciplines related to the 16th century reformations, such as arts, philosophy, law, history, theology etc., independent of the theme of the plenary papers.

Junior research talents of all disciplines from abroad are given the opportunity to establish working groups of their own at German research institutions.
The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award recognises outstanding talent and creative research approaches with exceptional conditions: With an award amount of up to 1.65 million EUR each winner receives valuable starting capital to spend five years pursuing an innovative research project at a research institute of his or her choice – untroubled by administrative constraints. In addition, the establishment of their own junior research team enables the award winners to lay an important foundation for a promising academic career at a very early stage. Eight awards are expected to be granted. The programme is funded by
the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Outstandingly qualified junior academics of all disciplines from abroad who completed their doctorate less than six years ago are eligible to apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award. Российский научный фонд извещает о проведении открытого публичного конкурса на получение грантов Фонда по приоритетному направлению деятельности Фонда «Реализация комплексных научных программ, предусматривающих развитие научных организаций и образовательных организаций высшего образования в целях укрепления кадрового потенциала науки, проведения научных исследований и разработок мирового уровня, создания наукоемкой продукции».
Гранты выделяются на реализацию в 2014 – 2018 годах комплексных научных программ, предусматривающих развитие научных организаций или образовательных организаций высшего образования в целях укрепления кадрового потенциала науки, проведения научных исследований и разработок мирового уровня, создания наукоемкой продукции по отраслям знаний, указанным в конкурсной документации. В конкурсе могут принимать участие программы российских научных организаций, российских образовательных организаций высшего образования.
Грант Фонда предоставляется российской научной организации, российской образовательной организации высшего образования на безвозмездной и безвозвратной основе по результатам конкурса на условиях, предусмотренных Фондом.
Размер одного гранта составляет
* в 2014 году от 10 (десяти) до 30 (тридцати) млн. рублей,
* в 2015 году – от 90 (девяноста) до 270 (двухсот семидесяти) млн. рублей,
* в остальные годы – от 50 (пятидесяти) до 150 (ста пятидесяти) млн. рублей ежегодно. Организация должна обеспечить в течение всего периода практической реализации программы предоставление ежегодного софинансирования в размере не менее 25 (двадцати пяти) про центов от объема ежегодного финансирования со стороны Фонда. Организация имеет право подать только одну заявку для участия в данном конкурсе. Не допускается представление в Фонд программы, предусматривающей осуществление мероприятий (проектов), аналогичных по содержанию проектам, одновременно поданным научным коллективом, осуществляющим исследования на базе организации, или организацией на конкурсы Фонда, иных научных фондов или организаций, либо реализуемых до момента подачи заявки научным коллективом, осуществляющим исследования на базе организации, или организацией за счет средств фондов или организаций, государственного (муниципального) задания.
Условием предоставления гранта является обязательство организации сделать результаты своих научных исследований общественным достоянием, опубликовав их в рецензируемых российских и зарубежных научных изданиях. Другие условия конкурса указываются в конкурсной документации.
Заявки на конкурс представляются по установленным конкурсной документацией формам в двух в видах – электронном (через Информационно-аналитическую систему Фонда ( ИАС) в информационно-коммуникационной сети «Интернет» по адресу http://grant.rscf.ru ) и печатном (распечатанном из ИАС), содержание которых должно быть идентичным.
Печатные экземпляры зарегистрированных ИАС заявок представляются в Фонд по адресу: г. Москва, ГСП - 2, 109992, ул. Солянка, д. 14, стр. 3 до 12 часов 00 минут (по московскому времени) 10 сентября 2014 года.
