Carson Fellowships for International Scholars in Munich, Germany

Description
The Rachel Carson Center (RCC) is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).  One of its primary goals is the internationalization of the humanities. Therefore, bringing scholars from different parts of the world to Munich is at the very core of the center’s activities. The fellowships cover periods ranging from three to twelve months. Fellowships can also be broken up into separate three month periods.  The length of the fellowship is determined individually for each fellow and depends both on the fellows’ needs and on funding availability.  Fellowships are very competitive. At least two committees review each application. The selection of fellows is based on the strength of his or her proposal. Other factors, however, such as diversity of the disciplines, the range of national backgrounds, the coherence of the group, and gender balance are also taken into account.
Eligibility
The Center will award fellowships to scholars from around the globe and from a variety of disciplines.  Applicants’ research and writing should preferably pertain to one of the topics that will be at the core of the 2014–15 research agenda:
*  Transformation of Landscapes;
*  Environmental Ethics, Politics, and Movements;
*  Resource Use and Conservation.
Fellowship
Fellowship funding is determined and negotiated on an individual basis between each fellow and the directors.  The amount depends on numerous factors, including the fellow’s current salary level,  their level of experience, the number of people accompanying the fellow (partners, family members), the duration of the fellowship, and the continuation of funding from their home institution.  Fellows can either keep their salary or they receive their own separate fellowship. Initially, fellows will be asked to classify themselves and make a suggestion for fellowship funding based on their current situation.
The Carson Center will pay for a  flight ticket to Munich (second class railway, economy class flight) for each fellow.  If family members accompany the fellow for a period of at least three months, their travel costs will also be covered.
It may serve as a point of orientation that the gross basic income of a chair at Bavarian universities is 64,000 euro, that of a tenured associate professor is around 52,000 euro, and that of a tenure-track junior professor (with one or two book publications) is 46,000 euro per annum.

The deadline for applications for the 2014-15 fellowship  is 31 May 2014.

3rd Global Conference: Sex and the State

Call for Presentations:
What are the parameters of "good" sexual citizenship?
How do we legally define "good" and "bad" sexual behaviour?
What ethical grounds are adopted to distinguish between good sex and bad sex in the Law?
How have former "sexual outlaws" challenged their exclusion and gained the status of full citizens?
How do we define and regulate sex crime and how do we seek to deter it?

These sorts of questions lie at the centre of this project, which explores the issue of sexual citizenship and its terms of belonging and exclusion. We wish to critically engage with the ways in which proper sexual citizenship, or "erotic civility", and sex crime, or "erotic incivility", have been articulated and regulated, in a manner that moves beyond simple disciplinary attentions to policy, social norms and values. The terrain of sex Law, its prohibitions and its sanctions, will be examined with a particular focus on the dual function of the Law, its normative and its executive functions, which define the parameters of good erotic citizenship while policing the "erotically uncivil", by intervening in instances of deviation from normative erotic civility.

We also wish to make central the issue of Ethics and examine its role in guiding prohibitions, permissions and regulations of different sexual conduct and sexualities, to flesh out the complex ways states and social institutions regulate sexual conduct in contemporary societies. Specifically we aim to explore the ways in which the Law and other forms of regulation have been used to police and repress desire and pleasure, and the ways in which such prohibitions and regulations have been changed, subverted, challenged or transgressed.

Proposals, papers, presentations, workshops and pre-formed panels are invited on issues related to any of the following themes:

1. Sex Crime and the Law
-Rape and the law against sexual coercion and violence
-Sex laws and diversity in sexual identity and conduct
-Sex laws and comparative research on sex and sexuality in different societies
-The relationship between sex law and notions of good or ethical sexuality
-Sex laws and sexual pathology and prejudice in contemporary societies
-Sex law and the lessons of historical legal prohibitions or regulations of sex and sexuality

2. Sex Law and Its Agencies
-Sex law and the judicial process
-Sex Law and policing sex and sexualities
-Sex Law and the selectivities of the state
- Sex Law and the role of the state in regulating and prohibiting sex and sexualities
-Sex Law and the discretion within criminal justice systems

3. Ethics and the Principles of Sexual Conduct
-What are the principles and standards of sexual ethics?
-What sex and sexualities should be prohibited, regulated or permitted?
-What forms of sexual orientations, behaviours and relationships are ethical or unethical?
-How should ethics relate to sex law and what other ideas of principles should inform sex law apart from ethics?
-Can we have ethically unsound sex that is legally permissible?
-What are the problems of talking ethically about desire and pleasure?

4. Sex Law and Regulating Desire
-Sex law and Sex Work âАУ pornography and prostitution
-Sex Law and Sex Acts âАУ permissible and impermissible sex
-Desires, pleasures and the conceptual bases for ethical or legal forms of prohibition or regulation

5. Sex Crime and Its Agents
-Understanding and treating the perpetrators of sex crime

The Steering Group particularly welcomes the submission of pre-formed panel proposals. Papers will also be considered on any related theme.

In order to support and encourage interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference.

300 word proposals should be submitted by Friday 11th July 2014. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 17th September 2014. Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order

Tzvetan Todorov Colloquium

Originally known above all for his ground-breaking work in literary theory, Tzvetan Todorov 
is now firmly established as one of the wold’s foremost cultural critics. A true son of the 
Enlightenment, he both defends our fundamental values and questions our deepest certainties. 

His critical interventions cover an astounding range of topics, from narratology to anti-
Semitism, from painting to politics, and from history to current affairs. Todorov addresses 
highly complex intellectual and social challenges with lucidity and equanimity, yet without 
avoiding controversial issues such as Islamic fundamentalism, the war in Iraq, and the 
International Criminal Court. 

The aim of the colloquium is to explore the variety of domains encompassed by Todorov’s 
intellectual activity. Papers focussing on: 

- critical humanism and the legacy of the Enlightenment 
- totalitarianism and democracy
- the role of the intellectual in the 21st century
- literature and the humanities
are particularly welcome, but proposals for other avenues of investigation will be gladly 
considered too.

ЗАЯВКИ НА УЧАСТИЕ В КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ :
Для участия в конференции необходимо прислать в оргкомитет заявку и тезисы предполагаемого выступления объемом 2-3 страницы (500-1000 слов) на русском языке или полный текст доклада до 0,5 авторского листа (до 20000 знаков) на русском языке.
Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право отбора заявок для участия в конференции. 
Окончание приема заявок  10.06.2014 г.  О своем решении относительно включения в состав участников Оргкомитет уведомит заявителей не позднее  30.06.2014 г.  Тексты докладов (статей) для публикации материалов конференции необходимо представить не позднее времени начала конференции ( 14.09.2014 г.)
По итогам конференции оргкомитет предполагает опубликовать поступившие материалы. Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право предварительного отбора и редактирования присланных материалов. Материалы не рецензируются и не возвращаются.
Заявку , включающую ФИО (полностью), место работы/учебы, контактную информацию (эл. адрес, тел., почтовый адрес), а также информацию о своем очном или заочном участии необходимо прислать на эл. адрес оргкомитета  [email protected]. После получения заявки на адрес участника высылается письмо, подтверждающее ее получение и приглашение для очных участников.
 
Требования к оформлению материалов:
1. Присылаемый текст должен иметь целостный содержательный характер, отражающий результаты самостоятельных оригинальных исследований автора.
2. Рекомендуемый объем тезисов до 20000 знаков.
3. При подготовке материалов необходимо соблюдать следующие требования к
компьютерному набору. Редактор  Word , шрифт  Times New Roman , кегль  14  с  полутор-
ным межстрочным интервалом,  абзац - 1,25. Параметры страницы: формат страницы – А
4; поля – 20 мм.
4. Иллюстрации и подрисуночные подписи к ним (размер шрифта 12 пт через 1 ин-
тервал) должны быть внедрены в текст в режиме «Вставка». Рисунки должны быть выполнены в формате, импортируемом графическими фильтрами Word, чтобы при перемещении по тексту они не могли распадаться на отдельные составляющие.
5. Таблицы выполняются в режиме «Таблица» редактора Word шрифтом 12 пт и могут иметь заголовок. Размеры рисунков и таблиц не должны выходить за пределы текстового поля.
6. В тексте ссылки на литературу заключаются в квадратные скобки [1. С. 15]. Список литературы по алфавиту, на которую есть ссылки, приводится в конце текста ( Библиографический список ).

Development of Russian Law-VII: 
Law-Making and Law-Breaking in the Context of Securitization and Neo-conservatism

In the light of recent event and current political situation, Russian law is facing a number of challenges. In Russian political discourse the law is being called upon to function as a major tool of securing new Russian political regime and neo-conservative ideology. While scholars debate whether this neo-conservative turn was (un)expected and how Putin’s policies reflect Russia’s exceptionality concepts, the State Duma has passed legislation which can also be used to curb political and societal activity and to illegalize actions and behaviour threatening to the regime. This active law-making creates challenges to the quality and cohesiveness of normative acts. Consequently, it may also result in law-breaking and advance the marginalization of such concepts as rule-of-law, human rights, and democracy. 
The Faculty of Law of the University of Helsinki is pleased to announce the consecutive conference in Development of Russian Law, which will take place in Helsinki on October 20-21, 2014. This conference continues the series of workshops, seminars, and conferences in Russian law, organized by the Faculty of Law since 2008. This annual event is devoted to discussions of the new and important topics within the field of Russian law and legal studies. 
The conference utilizes the bottom-up approach as to call for papers: Any topic within the sphere of Russian law which is considered important and/or crucial for the development of Russian law and legal studies by the applicant is welcome to be submitted as a proposal for conference participation. We especially encourage younger scholars and graduate students to apply. We also welcome legal researchers from across disciplines to join our discussions of Russian law. At the same time, we also encourage submission of individual papers and panel in the following themes:
1) Russian attitudes to international law in the context of “interests” and “security”;
2) Russian law and politics of securitization in Russia;
3) Judicial system’s reforms and the future of justice in Russia;
4) Neo-conservative policies and Russian law;
5) Law-making as a tool of control and ideologies of neo-positivism;
6) Protest movements and law-breaking as a challenge for the rule-of-law state;
7) Civil law and commercial law in the situation of sanctions.
The working language of the conference is English. All presentations and discussions are held in this language.

Call for Presentations
Mapping the field of the erotic is a complex and frustrating endeavour; as something which permeates lived experience, interpersonal relationships, intellectual reflection, aesthetic tastes and sensibilities, the erotic is clearly multi-layered and requires a plethora of approaches, insights and perspectives if we are to better to understand, appreciate and define it.

This inter- and trans- disciplinary project seeks to explore critical issues in relation to eroticism and the erotic through its history, its emergence in human development, both individual and phylogenetic, as well as its expression in national and cultural histories across the world, including issues of transgression and censorship. The project will also explore erotic imagination and its representation in art, art history, literature, film and music. These explorations inevitably touch on the relationship between sexualities, gender and bodies, along with questions concerning the perverse, fetishism and fantasy, pornography and obscenity.

Papers, presentations, workshops and pre-formed panels are also invited on any of the following themes:

- The Erotic and the Virtual
- Eros and the Exotic
- Fantasy of Eros
- Erotic in sports
- Erotic in Nature
- Erotic as Symbolism in art and creativity
- Erotic and the virtual: chats, webs, facebook, erotic pictures of the profiles. How do people present themselves in social networking?
- Can religion be erotic? Saint images, celibacy, witch hunts.
- The erotic in literature and film: erotic acts, images and figures as in Nabokov's Lolita or Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris. The beauty of erotic. Where is the line between the erotic and pornography?
- Contemporary erotic: a phenomenon of 50 Shades of Grey.
- New supernatural romances and teen erotic (The Twilight Saga, Hunger Games, etc)
- National and cultural histories of the erotic
- Ancient erotic of the old Greece and the old Rome: erotic images (pictures and sculptures), aesthetics of the ancient erotic, erotic in mythology (Zeus and Leda, Helen, Venera, etc).
- Erotic and folklore: folk stories, songs, customs.
- The erotic and phases of human development
- The psychology of the erotic: subconscious, dreams, theories
- The erotic and the perverse: fetishisms, toys, pictures, objects of desire
- The politics of the erotic inc. issues of censorship and transgression
- The eroticism of childhood: we normally associate children's erotic with paedophelia but is this so? Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a children's book but it's also a reflection of the author's desire for a young girl. Are there any other examples in literature, art and history?
- The most erotic figures in the history of humankind: Marilyn Monroe, Cleopatra, Messalina, Jackie Kennedy, Brad Pitt, Barack Obama. Is there any difference between sex and erotic appeal?
- Erotic pedagogy: is there a place for the erotic in the classroom? Erotic relationship between a professor and a student. Is it possible to teach erotic?

We welcome submissions from within specific disciplinary boundaries, but we are also particularly interested in inter-disciplinary contributions that balance the scope of insight that disciplines bring with the limitations that disciplinary boundaries create in failing to recognise cross-disciplinary connections, which neglect important historical and cultural perspectives on the development of the 'erotic' as a locus of attention. Consequently, we are particularly keen to encourage submissions that are not subsumed within disciplines, but cut across and between disciplinary vocabularies to provide new synergies, domains and inter-disciplinary possibilities. We warmly welcome proposals which go beyond traditional paper presentations and encompass also panels, performances and workshops.

In order to support and encourage inter-disciplinary engagement, it is our intention to create the possibility of starting dialogues between the parallel events running during this conference. Delegates are welcome to attend up to two sessions in each of the concurrent conferences. We also propose to produce cross-over sessions between these groups - and we welcome proposals which deal with the relationship between The Erotic, Revolt and Revolution, Making Sense of Suffering and Truth and Truthfulness.

What to Send:
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 27th June 2014. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 19th September 2014. Abstracts should be submitted to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats, following this order:

a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

Конкурс на право получения грантов Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности

Гранты Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности (далее - гранты) предоставляются Комитетом по науке и высшей школе в виде  субсидий  в соответствии с  Законом Санкт-Петербурга от 31.10.2001 № 752-97 «О грантах Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности»  (далее – Закон Санкт-Петербурга), постановлением Правительства Санкт-Петербурга от 01.04.2008 № 319 «О мерах по реализации Закона Санкт-Петербурга «О грантах Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности», постановлением Правительства Санкт-Петербурга от 28.04.2014 № 297 «О предоставлении в 2014 году субсидий, предусмотренных Комитету по науке и высшей школе Законом Санкт-Петербурга «О бюджете Санкт-Петербурга на 2014 год и на плановый период 2014 и 2015 годов» и пунктом 4.2.2 Перечня мероприятий Комплексной программы «Наука. Промышленность. Инновации» в Санкт-Петербурге на 2012-2015 годы, утвержденной постановлением Правительства Санкт-Петербурга от 28.06.2011 № 835 «О Комплексной программе «Наука. Промышленность. Инновации» в Санкт-Петербурге на 2012-2015 годы».

Гранты предоставляются в виде субсидий следующим физическим и юридическим лицам (за исключением государственных (муниципальных) учреждений), указанным в статье  5 Закона Санкт-Петербурга,  осуществляющим научную, научно-техническую деятельность на территории Санкт-Петербурга (далее - соискатели), признанным победителями конкурса грантов Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности:
•    научным организациям;
•    образовательным организациям высшего образования, имеющим государственную аккредитацию;
•    региональным объединениям юридических лиц (ассоциациям, союзам), если научная и (или) научно-техническая деятельность предусмотрена их учредительными документами;
•    группам научных работников, осуществляющим совместную научную, научно-техническую деятельность на основе договора;
•    научным работникам;
•    профессорско-преподавательскому составу образовательных организаций высшего образования;
•    индивидуальным предпринимателям.

Субсидии предоставляются на безвозмездной и безвозвратной основе в целях возмещения затрат или недополученных доходов, возникших в 2014 году в связи с производством (реализацией) товаров, выполнением работ, оказанием услуг при осуществлении научно-технической деятельности, экспериментальных разработок, проведении прикладных научных исследований (далее – работы) по следующим направлениям предоставления грантов Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности (далее - гранты), указанным в статье  4 Закона Санкт-Петербурга :
1.    прикладная химия;
2.    прикладная физика;
3.    прикладная электроника;
4.    материалы;
5.    информационные технологии;
6.    энергосберегающие технологии;
7.    медицина;
8.    биология;
9.    социология;
10.    экономика;
11.    экология.

Максимальная сумма, запрашиваемая соискателем на грант не должна превышать:
•    для физических лиц 100 тыс. руб.
•    для юридических лиц 200 тыс. руб.

Условиями предоставления грантов являются:
1. Выполнение соискателями работ по направлениям, указанным в статье  4 Закона Санкт-Петербурга  и настоящем извещении.
2. Обеспечение соискателями соответствия работ следующим требованиям:
- научной новизны и (или) научного, научно-технического уровня работ;
- наличия возможности использовать результаты работ на практике;
- наличия кадровых, материально-технических ресурсов для выполнения работ;
- важности результатов работ для Санкт-Петербурга.

Для участия в конкурсе соискатель подает заявку (далее – заявка), форма заявки представлена в  приложении 1  к настоящему извещению.

К заявке должны быть приложены следующие документы:
1.    Выписка соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом (или ее нотариально заверенная копия), из Единого государственного реестра юридических лиц, выданная налоговым органом не ранее чем за 6 месяцев до дня подачи заявки;
2.    копия устава соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом, заверенная подписью руководителя (уполномоченного лица) и печатью соискателя;
3.    документ, подтверждающий полномочия руководителя (уполномоченного лица) соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом;
4.    документ, содержащий информацию, раскрывающую научное содержание представленного на соискание гранта исследования (далее - проект), включающий следующие разделы: введение, постановка проблемы, цели, задачи, подходы к решению, оценка результатов, список публикаций соискателя по теме проекта, с приложением копий не более трех важнейших публикаций, а также содержащий информацию о соответствии проекта одному или нескольким направлениям, указанным в статье  4 Закона Санкт-Петербурга  от 31.10.2001 № 752-97 «О грантах Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности», о научной новизне и научном, научно-техническом уровне проекта, о наличии возможности использования результатов проекта на практике, о наличии кадровых, материально-технических ресурсов для выполнения проекта, о важности результатов проекта для Санкт-Петербурга;
5.    документ, подтверждающий согласие руководителя организации, на базе которой соискателем, являющимся физическим лицом, планируется выполнение проекта, о предоставлении научно-технической или производственной базы соответствующей организации для выполнения проекта, содержащий информацию о полном наименовании и месте нахождения организации, на базе которой планируется выполнение проекта;
6.    список соисполнителей проекта (в случае привлечения соисполнителей к выполнению проекта), содержащий информацию о фамилии, имени, отчестве, образовании, ученом звании (в случае наличия), ученой степени (в случае наличия), должности, месте работы соисполнителей, а также подписи соисполнителей проекта (для соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом);
7.    анкета руководителя проекта, содержащая информацию об образовании, месте работы, опыте осуществления научной и (или) научно-технической деятельности руководителя проекта, подписанная руководителем проекта и заверенная по месту его работы;
8.    план реализации проекта, содержащий информацию об этапах выполнения проекта и сроках их реализации, о форме участия в реализации проекта соисполнителей, о привлекаемых к реализации проекта кадровых и материально-технических ресурсах;
9.    документ, содержащий информацию о направлениях расходов на финансирование проекта за счет гранта с обоснованием каждого направления расходов, подписанный соискателем, являющимся физическим лицом, или подписанный руководителем (уполномоченным лицом) и главным бухгалтером соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом.

За счет субсидий подлежат возмещению:
1. для физических лиц:
•    затраты на приобретение предметов снабжения и материалов, необходимых для выполнения проекта;
•    затраты на приобретение основных средств, необходимых для выполнения проекта;
•    затраты, связанные с командировками, необходимыми для выполнения проекта;
•    затраты на услуги (работы) сторонних организаций, необходимые для выполнения проекта (не более 50% от суммы субсидии);
•    трудозатраты получателя гранта, необходимые для выполнения проекта (не более 50% от суммы субсидии), рассчитываемые исходя из среднего размера оплаты труда научных работников организации, в которой работает получатель гранта.
2. для юридических лиц:
•    оплата труда работников с начислениями на выплаты по оплате труда (не более 50% от суммы субсидии);
•    затраты на приобретение предметов снабжения и материалов, необходимых для выполнения проекта;
•    затраты на приобретение основных средств, необходимых для выполнения проекта;
•    командировочные расходы, необходимые для выполнения проекта;
•    общехозяйственные расходы (не более 15% от суммы затрат, указанных в абзацах 2-5 пункта 4.4.2 настоящего Порядка);
•    затраты на услуги, работы привлекаемых организаций (не более 50% от суммы субсидии).

Образец документа, содержащего информацию о направлениях расходов на финансирование проекта за счет гранта, представлен в  приложении 2  к настоящему извещению, образцы расшифровок направлений расходов представлены в приложениях 3  и  4  к настоящему извещению). Включение статей расходов, не указанных в приложении 2 к настоящему извещению, не допускается.

Заявка и прилагаемые к ней документы должны содержать информацию, подтверждающую соответствие соискателя одной из категорий, указанных в настоящем извещении, и условиям предоставления грантов, указанных в настоящем извещении.

Заявка и прилагаемые к ней документы подаются в письменной форме в двух экземплярах, подписанных соискателем, являющимся физическим лицом, или подписанных руководителем (уполномоченным лицом) и скрепленных печатью соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом. Одновременно соискатель представляет электронную версию заявки и прилагаемых к ней документов.

Заявка и прилагаемые к ней документы представляются соискателем по адресу, указанному в настоящем извещении, в запечатанном конверте, на котором должно быть указано «В Комитет по науке и высшей школе. Заявка на участие в конкурсе на право получения грантов Санкт-Петербурга в сфере научной и научно-технической деятельности», а также фамилия, имя, отчество соискателя, являющегося физическим лицом, наименование соискателя, являющегося юридическим лицом, контактный телефон.

К прохождению конкурса не допускаются заявки:
•    заполненные с нарушением установленной Комитетом формы, представленной в настоящем извещении;
•    поступившие после окончания срока, указанного в извещении;
•    при отсутствии документов, перечень которых приведен в настоящем извещении.

Материалы заявки и документы, прилагаемые к ней, соискателю не возвращаются. С победителями конкурса будут заключаться договоры на предоставление субсидий. Субсидии выплачиваются после предоставления аналитического отчета о выполнении проекта и отчета о фактическом расходовании средств.

  Prix  Dix-huitième siècle  2014  : Le Prix  Dix-huitième siècle  est ouvert à tout étudiant (de nationalité française ou étrangère) ayant soutenu un premier mémoire universitaire (BAC + 4 ou 5, université française ou étrangère) écrit en français, portant en totalité ou en partie sur le dix-huitième siècle, quelle que soit sa discipline. Les mémoires doivent avoir été soutenus au cours de l'année universitaire 2012-2013 ou 2013-2014. Le prix est doté d'une somme de 500 euros et de deux ans d'abonnements à la SFEDS (Société Française d'Étude du Dix-Huitième Siècle). Le jury peut également proposer au lauréat de préparer à partir de son mémoire un article qui sera publié dans les mélanges du numéro annuel de Dix-Huitième Siècle. Les mémoires seront adressés, par l'enseignant ayant dirigé le travail, sous la seule forme d'une version électronique (au format pdf) au plus tard le  15 septembre 2014  aux deux adresses suivantes :  [email protected]  ou   [email protected] . Chaque enseignant ne peut présenter que 2 candidats à chaque prix. Les mémoires seront évalués par un jury pluridisciplinaire. Les résultats du Prix  Dix-huitième siècle 2014  seront proclamés lors de l'Assemblée Générale de la SFEDS de janvier 2015.

Call for Contributors to  The Eighteenth-Century Bird in Literature (1660-1830)  Edited Book. A great deal of scholarly effort has been made over the years to gather together, analyze, and anthologize eighteenth-century bird poetry, paintings, and other material cultures that describe and represent birds in this period. Very few publications, however, have attempted to bring together the wide range of different approaches that scholars have adopted. This new project, The Eighteenth-Century Bird in Literature (1660-1830), accordingly aims to further extend the discussion of the eighteenth-century bird and bring incisive, new critical approaches to the topic of birds and the representations of birds in eighteenth-century literature and cultural life. The editors are particularly interested in ways in which a deeper understanding of the bird in eighteenth-century cultural life shapes our twenty-first century notions of birds, our behaviors towards birds, and towards the environments that birds inhabit. Chapters may include (but are not limited to) engagement with additional perspectives on eighteenth-century birds.
These are just a few suggested topics:

edited volume "Formulas for Betrayal": Traitors, Deserters,
Collaborators in European Politics of Memory

One of the most resonant topics in contemporary discussions
about history and memory of the 20th century is the traumatic
experience of participants and witnesses of wars, calamities
and atrocities unfolding in discourses on victims and
victimization. In particular, in the mnemonic landscape of
World War II discourse of war victims comes close or intersects
with discourse of war heroes with its own canon of characters.
Although critically revisited, this normatively charged hierarchy
of roles and positions has re-emerged after 1989 all over
Europe. Inseparably from the narrations on heroes and victims
circulate the discourses of war perpetrators which also combine
both unchanged and revised components. These three
mnemonic discourses have an immense effect on European
societies and social consciousnesses.


Still, there exists a complex issue closely connected to the
mentioned discourses that has not been subjected to
equally scrupulous academic interrogation. This is namely
an extremely ambivalent issue of treason and the figure of
the betrayer in its widest meaning – from deserters from
military units and officers who changed the side and served
the enemy to civil persons who actively or passively supported
or collaborated with the enemy. Shaping, imposition and
perpetuation of images of the betrayer which corresponded
with dominant socio-cultural trends and political ideologies of
the 20th-century’s Europe, is of special interest in investigations
of social (re)construction of memory on the cusp of the 20th
and 21st century.


The main focus of the anthology is elucidation of the specific
character of shaping and imposition of certain “formulas for
betrayal” as a result of memory politics in post-war Europe
facilitating discussion about (and in some cases re-evaluation
of) treachery, desertion and collaboration in the course of the
20th century. This focus invites exploration of both political
control over memory (presupposing selection, suppression or
ideological “twisting” of facts), political usage of “formulas for
betrayal”, and cultural framing of the betraying subject in the
context of legitimization of various political regimes and
ideologies.

Possible contributions should address at least one of the
following issues:
- general analysis of positions and roles which the
subjects of war and civil betrayal took in politics of memory in
Europe;
- how and by what means “formulas for betrayal”
were shaped, translated and perceived in the public discourse
of European countries throughout the 20th century as well as
presently;
- discursive-semantic features of different categories
of betrayers and specificity of gradation of their betrayal in
European politics of memory;
- gendered nature of “formulas of betrayal”;
- transformations of meaning and symbolic dimensions
 of images of traitors/deserters/
collaborators during the Cold War
and post-Cold War periods;
- specificity of scholarly, journalistic and fictional
presentation of images of betrayers during World War II;
- perspectives for further study of sociopolitical,
anthropological and historiographical premises for contemporary
 “commemorative inversion” of war crime (for example, the recent
trend for erecting monuments for former Wehrmacht deserters).
- contemporary political uses and cultural reverberations

of memories about the 20th century in connection with recent
events in Russia “betrayal” as a cliché, label, or unconditional accusation
in different
forms of political discourses.

The deadline for submissions of the 300-500 word abstract outlining
conceptual framework, material and methodology of the chapter is
30 September 2014. The full-size drafts of the selected contributions
are expected to be ready by 1 June 2015. The maximum length for
consideration of an article is 8,000-10,000 words (including footnotes).

Editors:
Gelinada Grinchenko – historian, Professor of History at the
Department of Ukrainian Studies (Faculty of Philosophy, V. N.
Karazin National University, Kharkiv, Ukraine), received her Doctor
of Sciences in History in 2011 from National Academy of Sciences
of Ukraine. Since 2006 she is Head of the Ukrainian Oral History
Association. Currently she is a member of the European research
network COST In Search of Transcultural Memory in Europe, and
Project Partner of EU’s 7th Framework Programme for Research
and Technological Development “EUBORDERSCAPES:Bordering,
Political Landscapes and Social Arenas: Potentials and Challenges
of Evolving Border Concepts in a post-Cold War World”.

Eleonora Narvselius - ethnologist, received her Ph.D. in Ethnic
Studies from Linköping University (Sweden). Presently she is
affiliated with the Center for European Studies at Lund University
(Sweden) where she participates at an international research
project focusing on memories about the pre-war population
groups that disappeared from several cities on the East-Central
European borderlands. Also, she is a member of the European
 research network COST In Search of Transcultural Memory
in Europe. She has published several chapters and peer-reviewed
articles on intellectuals, identity issues, politics of memory and
youth cultures in Ukraine. Her recent book Ukrainian Intelligentsia
in Post-Soviet L'viv: Narratives, Identity, Power was published
by Lexington Books in 2012.
