CONFERENCES / КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ

https://www.connections.clio-online.net/event/id/termine-37750The
Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis at Stanford University in Palo Alto solicit proposals for papers that explore the environmental history of borderlands in the early modern world.
An initial meeting will be held at SMU’s satellite campus in Taos, New Mexico in Fall 2019 to be followed in Spring 2020 by a conference at Stanford. We expect a university press will publish the papers as a volume edited by conference co-organizers Johan Elverskog (Southern Methodist University) and Ali Yaycioglu (Stanford University).
The symposium and the resulting volume mark an opportunity to (re)consider the environmental contexts of borderlands and frontiers of different political orders, particularly pluralistic imperial regimes, roughly between the 15th and 19th centuries. While examining how environmentality was negotiated by human actors of bordering (or overlapping) political regimes, we also intend to explore possibilities that go beyond the binariebetween nature and culture, and environmental and political orders.
We welcome papers focusing on mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, swamps, steppes, deserts, seas and oceans, under-seas, subterranean and aerial spaces as environmental borderlands and frontiers of different large-scale (imperial) human organizations. In these undertakings, however, we are particularly interested in contributions with holistic conceptualizations of eco-orders of humans and non-humans, which can challenge established anthropocentric approaches. We do not have any geographical priority. Our concerns are truly global. To this end we plan on bringing together scholars working on the environmental history of borderland regions around the world. We also welcome digital history projects.
We welcome submissions from scholars of any rank or affiliation who are eager to contribute substantively to what promises to be an exciting and important academic endeavor. By the deadline of October 1, 2018 applicants should submit a one-page CV and a proposal of 500-800 words to Johan Elverskog ([email protected]) describing the research undertaken and its connection to the goals of the conference. For more information about the symposium please contact Johan or Ali Yaycioglu ([email protected]).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Picturing Russian Empire University of Tyumen
June 28–29, 2019
This conference, sponsored by the University of Tyumen, and the subsequent volume, are intended to produce a multidisciplinary examination of the connections between empire and the visual in the long history of the Rus’, Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet territories.
In 2008, Picturing Russia: Explorations in Visual Culture, a volume of short essays brought to the fore ways that analysis of the visual could both expand and change perspectives on Russia history. That book touched on imperial visualities primarily from a Russian point of view. In the present project we want to offer the broadest possible perspectives on visual experiences of empire in Russian and former Soviet space. We invite scholars working in any field of study to engage in a discussion of visuality, visual media, and visual methodologies in this region.
We especially welcome proposals from scholars working in former Soviet space and scholars whose research explores perspectives on empire from outside the capitals or traditional centers of power.
Topics may include but are not limited to:
• How did the visual complicate the political binaries of empire?
• How was imperial power established, mediated, maintained or subverted by the visual?
• How was indigenous authority established, mediated, maintained or subverted by the visual?
• How did the visual mediate between forms of imperial authority and indigenous authority?
• How did the visual represent the complexities of imperial experience?
• Does the visual allow us to understand empire differently than textural sources and if so how?
• What does the visual give us in terms of emotional investment, sensory knowledge?
• Is the imperial visual always Orientalist?
• Is the imperial visual always a weapon of power?
• What were the conscious theories of the visual that motivated the visual production of empire?
• Can we access viewers’ responses to the imperial visual?
• To what extent is visuality distinct from or intertwined with the other senses?
• How does studying the visual contribute to understanding or challenging Russia’s supposed “logocentrism”?
• How can it contribute to debates about modernity’s purported “occularcentrism”?
• Do these concepts – occularcentrism and logocentrism – contribute in any way to our understandings of the premodern or the religious spheres in the history of empire?
• How did the visual shape imperial geographical knowledge?
• How the visual language of the empire changed over time and space?
• Was the empire united in terms of visual? Local, regional and general visual metaphors of empire: how did it work?
Our goal is to produce a sequel to “Picturing Russia” that replicates its structure as an accessible text for students and a compendium of innovative theoretical and methodological contributions/advances to historical approaches to the visual.
Proposals should focus on one (or a very limited number) of visual objects and should foreground discussion of the stakes of the visual. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and should be submitted in English. They should specify the visual medium or object under examination and the theoretical or methodological questions under discussion.
Proposals should be sent Sergei A. Kozlov via e-mail: [email protected] by October 1st, 2018.
We will have a limited number of slots for the conference, but we anticipate that the book will be able to include a larger number of contributors. Essays for the volume will be very short, no longer than 3000 words, and should include no more than three images.

Call for Papers: Technologies of Mind and Body in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc
An international symposium to take place at the University of Nottingham (UK), 17-18 May 2019
Deadline for the submission of abstracts: 30 September 2018
The project of creating a ‘New Man’ and ‘New Woman’ initiated in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc constituted one of the most extensive efforts to remake human psychophysiology in modern history. Revolutionary campaigns targeting the mental and physical ‘reforging’ of the population have attracted a growing number of scholars and engaged a variety of disciplines and methodologies in recent years. Bringing this research together, this symposium aims to shed new light on the multifaceted techniques that were developed in order to transform and revolutionise individual minds and bodies. How did science, culture and medicine overlap with a mode of government that sought to manage, cultivate and regulate human life? What role did Soviet and East European scientists, medical professionals, educational specialists and cultural producers play in the articulation of new ideas about the body, health and human perfectibility? How did individuals and collectives engage with – or resist – the transformative imperatives of the Soviet experiment? Spotlighting the intersection of expert knowledge, culture and revolutionary agendas of mind-body transformation, the symposium will address the following topics:
The mind/body as object of scientific and medical knowledge
Media technologies and new arenas of sensory experience
The blurred boundaries between science, technology and culture
Encounters between the ‘biological’ and the ‘technological’
Technologies of the self and self-fashioning
Disciplinary power, biopolitics and techniques of bodily management
Understandings of human variation and dis/ability
Organisers: Anna Toropova (Nottingham) and Claire Shaw (Warwick)
Please send a paper title, an abstract of 300 words and a brief academic biography (200 words) to [email protected] by 30th September 2018.
Limited funding is available to assist presenters with travel and accommodation costs (priority will be given to PhD students, early career scholars and those from institutions without research funds).

Economic Activities and Archival Practices in Europe between the 12th and the 21st century
04.04.2019 - 05.04.2019
Deadline 30.09.2018
In recent years, archives and archival practices have attracted significant new interest. Building upon theoretical insights by Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and several post-colonial theorists, ‘archiving’ is now increasingly understood as a foundational cultural operation. The development of routines not only for producing, but also for preserving, collecting, and storing documents of all kind is considered a crucial element of cultural change. In the European case, generally speaking, the centuries after c. 1100 have witnessed a significant and rapid expansion of archival practices. Historians in a number of fields currently study the growing relevance of record-keeping. The realm of politics and administration still holds pride of place, but church archives are also attracting special attention. From a vantage point less centered on institutions, historians explore the interplay between personal identity, life-writing, and archival practices with greater frequency.
This two-day workshop seeks to highlight another vital, but understudied area for the shaping of Europe’s archival culture: economic life. While scholars generally agree, that the economic sphere contributed significantly to how Europe’s specific culture of pragmatic literacy took shape – one might think, e.g., of account books or debt-certificates –, much less attention has thus far been paid to the relationship between economic and archival practices. This conference considers the significance of economic archiving for the rise and shaping of Europe’s archival culture. To do so, we invite papers on topics from the Middle Ages to the contemporary world. As we seek to ask questions pertaining to long-term developments, we are particularly interested in papers on less-studied epochs and phenomena. Submissions should be made by email no later than September 30. All submissions should focus on or, at least, build upon research concerning the everyday relevance of archives for economic activities. “How did archiving and economic activity shape each other?” is going to be one of this conference’s key questions.
Abstracts (750 words), including a title and a short CV, should be send directly to Prof. Markus Friedrich at:

CFP 'Monarchy and Modernity, 1500-1945', University of Cambridge, 8-9 January 2019
The conference announced on the cfp below was originally designed for Europeanists, but was opened up to all world areas following multiple requests by non-Europeanists to participate. The cfp has therefore been revised and the deadline extended to August 15, 2018. Please note that all proposals previously submitted remain valid and, where applicable, accepted.
Monarchy and Modernity since 1500
University of Cambridge 8-9 January 2019
Europe’s past is overwhelmingly monarchical, yet the monarchies that remain in place today hardly resemble those that governed Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. Modernity has transformed monarchy from a matter of unquestioned and often sacred fact to a matter of largely secular and usually democratic choice. If the words remain the same – along with many of the families, their titles, properties and places of residence – their meaning has changed profoundly over time and across countries, so much so that, along the centuries, the working mechanisms, functions and powers of European monarchy have been transformed. The academic literature, however, seldom measures this distance between monarchy’s various historical meanings and its surprisingly frequent manifestations today.
In theoretical and speculative disciplines, the lack of inquiry into monarchy’s significance is due partly to disciplinary divisions. Political theorists, intellectual historians, experts in jurisprudence and art and literary critics rarely delve into the subject of monarchy, while historians of monarchy tend to focus on chronology rather than concepts. Monarchy’s own nature has helped determine these divisions.With its providentialist, semi-magic and mysterious foundations in the divine right of kings, monarchism is a double paradox, a form of political theory that is at once anti-political and anti-theoretical. Innovatively, this conference seeks to break disciplinary barriers by combining the outlooks of monarchical specialists on the one hand , and of social , cultural , literary and political theorists on the other .
Proceeding from the premise that the nature of things is best known , and their development most determined , during critical times , this conference centers on three ( long ) key moments in the history of modern European monarchy : the English Revolution , the French Revolution , and the mainstreaming of republicanism during the first half of the twentieth century . These moments , however , are only referential , and presentations studying the reinvention , representation and conceptualisation of monarchy during other modern periods , from 1500 to the present , are also welcome , with Renaissance subjects possibly serving as introits and contemporary ones as epilogues to the conference .
The main lines of inquiry are twofold , one directed at monarchy ’ s political-legal significance , and the other at its socio - cultural , psychological , religious, literary and spiritual roles . The political -legal line of inquiry can include – without being limited to – European monarchy ’ s historical relationship to legislation and the administration of justice , as well as democratic , republican , and aristocratic traditions . The theological / sociological / anthropological perspective is instead concerned with monarchy as a series of rituals , processions , celebrations and formal procedures that represent sovereignty , organise time and relationships , lend nations a sense of identity , and connect individuals emotionally with sacred spaces and powers , especially as represented by the Catholic and Protestant religions .
Studies of non-European monarchical traditions are likewise accepted, preferably with reference to European ones.
Contributions may address one or more of the following themes but are not limited to them :
* Monarchy in political thought
* Monarchy and constitutionalism
* Monarchy in its relation with religion , theology and spirituality
* The relationship between spiritual and temporal powers
* Royalism vs . monarchism
* National and sovereign representation
* The royal imaginary, including literary representations of monarchy
* Monarchy and property
* Monarchy and material culture: art, fashion and the built environment
* Royal feasts , rituals , processions and celebrations
* Women and monarchy
* Non-European monarchical traditions, preferably with reference to European ones.
We invite proposals for 20- minute presentations , which will be revised subsequently for publication in a peer - reviewed collective volume . Graduate students are welcome to participate , and papers in Dutch , English , French , German , Italian , Portuguese and Spanish are accepted , although English is encouraged to facilitate communication . The conference will be held at the University of Cambridge on 8-9 January 2019. Please email a 200- word abstract and one - page CV to Carolina Armenteros ( [email protected]) by 15 August 2018.
