CALL FOR PAPERS: International Scholarly Conference
A “MEMORY REVOLUTION”: SOVIET HISTORY THROUGH THE LENS OF PERSONAL DOCUMENTS
7-8 June 2017, Moscow
Organizers
International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences/National
Research University – Higher School of Economics (Moscow)
The Friedrich Ebert Foundation
With additional support from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced
Holocaust Studies, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, DC), the
Center for Russian, East-European and Caucasian Studies (Paris), the Franco-Russian
Research Center (Moscow) and the Blavatnik Family Foundation
The 1990s brought about a revolution in the study of Soviet history. This was symbolized by an
“archival revolution”, i.e. the declassification of many official documents from the Soviet period,
which were made available to historians. At the same time, through the disclosure of personal
texts written during the Soviet period, there was another and no less importan
t “revolution of memory,” allowing for a better understanding and evaluation of the Soviet period.
There were diaries, whose existence had been concealed by their owners for many years.
There were also memoirs suddenly brought to light that had not been intended for publication.
Along with letters, personal photographs, audio recordings and amateur films, these sources from the Soviet period allow for the recreation of a multi-faceted picture of public sentiment in the Soviet Union.
The conference aims to examine the significance and role of personal sources in the study of
Soviet history. We want to go beyond an analysis of “Soviet subjectivity,” the construction of the
“socialist self,” and related approaches. Above all else, we wish to draw attention to unconventional
texts and personal documents, which differed significantly from the official Soviet view of reality.
Thematically, we will discuss sources on any period of Soviet history, but the analysis of the
history of World War II and the Holocaust in the Soviet Union is particularly welcome.
The conference organizers welcome proposals addressing the following questions:
- What do we mean by personal sources, and where is the line between personal and
official sources? To what extent does the category of personal sources include, for example, records of
interrogations that sometimes turn into a confession by the accused, letters to the authorities, or denunciations?
- What is the informational value of individual personal sources and how do we solve the
problem of their verification? In particular, how productive is it to compare the information contained in personal
sources with that of official Soviet documents that reported public opinion, including surveys from the security
organs and Party committees, societal statistics, investigation files, etc.?
- Who wrote diaries and memoirs during the Soviet period, and why? What was the motivation of those authors who supported the official Soviet view of events? Likewise why did those who produced “non-canonical” diaries and memoirs feel compelled to write?
- How can we identify new personal sources?
- How should we reckon with the fact that the majority of the population did not leave any personal sources? How does this affect the representativeness of personal sources in the analysis of society as a whole?
- What are the problems of analysis, and the value, of non-textual personal sources, such a
s photographs, audio recordings, and amateur films?
- What influential works and approaches to the analysis of personal sources from other areas
of history are most applicable to the study of documents about Soviet history?
- Finally, to what extent does the research on individual personal sources shed light on more general issues of the history of Soviet society?
We invite creative responses to these questions, and call on scholars from all disciplines to adapt and interpret the conference’s framework imaginatively, in terms of their own original research.
The working languages of the conference will be Russian and English.
The deadline for submitting paper proposals (in English or Russian) is 1 March 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by 15 March 2017.
Submissions should include (1) the name of the applicant, institutional affiliation, postal and email
addresses; (2) a brief CV; (3) a short statement explaining how the applicant’s research relates to the conference
topic; (4) a one-page outline of the paper. Proposals are invited in Russian or English and can be for both
individual papers and panels. Proposals and inquiries should be e-mailed to: [email protected]
The organizers will assist international participants with obtaining visa invitations to Russia. Meals
(coffee breaks, lunches) will be provided. The conference organizers have limited funds to cover
(partially or in full) participants’ airfare and accommodation costs for the duration of the conference.
We ask prospective participants who will need financial assistance to indicate this in their submissions.

International interdisciplinary conference "Postmemory and Contemporary World" hopes to explore the phenomenon of postmemory in its multifarious manifestations: psychological, social, historical, cultural, philosophical, religious, economic, political, and many others. As in the previous editions of the conference,
we also want to devote considerable attention to how this phenomenon appears in artistic practices: literature, film, theater or visual arts.
We are interested in all aspects of postmemory: in its individual and collective dimensions, in the past and in the present-day world, and in its potential to direct the future. Whose memory is postmemory: that of generations, communities, nations or families? How is it maintained and passed on? What is the role of imagination in its creation? What is remembered and what is forgotten? Is it always the memory of traumatic experience? How can it be taught and studied? These are some of the questions that inspired the idea of the conference.
Medellín, Colombia, has been chosen as a place for this conference not by chance. Colombia is the
country of the troubled past that quite successfully has been processing it on its way of recovery. The conference wants to establish and promote a dialogue between scholars, countries and continents, therefore, inviting papers of different geographic and cultural focus.
Please submit abstracts (no longer than 300 words) of your proposed 20-minute presentations, together with a short biographical note, by 28 February 2017 both to Prof. Wojciech Owczarski (University of Gdańsk): [email protected] and Prof. Polina Golovatina-Mora (Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana): [email protected]
Confirmation of acceptance will be sent by 1 March 2017.
The conference language is English, while Spanish abstracts will be considered.

University of Virginia Slavic Forum (Mar. 31- Apr. 1)
“RE:Constructions: An Interdisciplinary Forum on Memory and Imagination”
Traditional applications of the terms memory and imagination have emphasized a distinct
barrier between the concepts based on the premise of accuracy. Memory should be a
record, one that, if occasionally faulty, remains primarily truthful. Imagination cannot be faulty
because it is nebulous, fictive, unconcerned with veracity. However, in recent years, cognitive
scientists have demonstrated that the same neural processes underlie both memory and
imagination. Memories are as much constructs as imagination.
This forum is devoted to the intersections of memory and imagination in constructing identity,
history, traditions, and futures. Memory invokes ideas of nostalgia, trauma, the urge to preserve,
to delay oblivion. Imagination invokes dreaming, invention, childhood, play. Despite the seeming
differences between the two, they both affect every sphere of human experience and endeavor.
The UVA Slavic Forum is committed to promoting an atmosphere of interdisciplinary cooperation.
Therefore, papers from various disciplines will be accepted. Papers may deal with memory
and/or imagination. Creativity in interpreting the topic is encouraged. Possible topics include,
but are not limited to the following:
-Autobiography and historical narrative
-Invented traditions
-Imagined geography and imagined communities
-Institutional memory
-Social structures, institutions, and the social imagination
-Identity and narrative of self
-Exile and nostalgia
-Breakdowns of memory, trauma and amnesia
-Cognitive science
-Possible-world theory and worldbuilding
-Creativity
The University of Virginia Society of Slavic Graduate Students will host RE:Constructions:
Memory and Imagination Mar. 31 - Apr. 1. Submissions should be sent in Microsoft Word format.
Please include an abstract (no more than 200 words), as well as your name, phone number,
departmental affiliation, and a short academic bio. Submissions from graduate students, postdocs,
and undergraduate students will be considered. Undergraduate papers will be presented in separate panels.
Submissions should be sent to [email protected] by Feb 15.

UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
http://www.eurasia.org/programs/university-partnership-program
Launched in 2015, EF’s U.S.-Russia University Partnership Program (UPP) promotes academic
collaboration between U.S. and Russian citizens by connecting higher education institutions and
supporting the launch of new bilateral academic partnerships. UPP employs a unique partnership
model that allows Russian and U.S. universities to connect with each other through an online database
and participate in funding competitions for new partnership projects.
UPP funding competitions allow institutions to apply in two stages: the first “contact” stage provides
modest funds to support the design of partnership project proposals, and the second “linkage” stage
offers more substantial funding for implementation of partnership projects. Examples of eligible
partnership projects include joint research projects, dual degree programs, joint course delivery,
resource-sharing arrangements, and faculty exchange programs, with an emphasis on two-country
impact and sustainability beyond the project funding period. Over the course of UPP, EF anticipates
launching at least 15 bilateral partnerships between Russian and U.S. institutions.
In addition to funding new partnerships, UPP features an online database of suggested partnership
projects posted by Russian and U.S. higher education professionals. UPP encourages institutions to
use the online database as a resource to locate potential partners, whether for UPP’s funding competitions
or other types of collaboration.
Against the backdrop of an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, international education is
an essential component of developing diverse, educated, and dynamic societies.
Through UPP, EF is ensuring that the free flow of ideas and research continues to enrich universities
in both countries.
Eurasia Foundation was founded as a public-private partnership in 1992. Within a year we had
established our first field office in Moscow, and soon were operating in every country in the former
Soviet Union. Over the course of our history, EF has expanded its reach and scope or operations,
upholding our core mission to empower citizens to take responsibility for their own civic and
economic prosperity.

CALL FOR PAPERS: EDITED VOLUME ON GENDER AND EASTERN ORTHODOXY***
We – Academy Professor Elina Vuola and Dr Helena Kupari, from the University of Helsinki – are
putting together and editing a collection of scholarly articles on the theme of gender and Eastern
Orthodoxy and invite those interested in contributing to send chapter abstracts by 15 February 2017
to the contact address given below.
At this point, we understand the theme broadly. Ideally, the book will contain theoretically oriented
essays that address key issues related to the theme from a broader perspective, as well as a
selection of qualitative, empirical case studies representing a wide range of sociocultural
contexts and showcasing different religious and religion-related social phenomena. That is to
say, we are interested in both empirical and theoretical investigations of the topic. The contributions
can draw from a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches including those of theology,
religious studies, sociology, anthropology, and feminist studies. However, all papers need to employ
some kind of gender-theoretical framework – even a rudimentary one. Moreover, the case studies
should focus on the modern world, roughly speaking: on 20 th and 21 st century lived expressions
of and negotiations with the Eastern Orthodox tradition.
Decisions about the specific aim and scope of the book as well as about the final contributors will be
made based on the chapter abstracts. Thus, we will also take into consideration interesting abstracts
that slightly diverge from these guidelines. Furthermore, prior to acceptance we may ask authors for
minor alterations to their abstracts, to ensure a good fit with the totality of the book.
We have spoken to the Religion Editor at Routledge about this project, and he has shown real interest
in it. After selecting the articles to be included in the volume, we will compose a book proposal and send
it to Routledge. Any official decision to publish would have to be based on peer review of our proposal,
but the Religion Editor has assured us that if reviews are favourable he would be keen to publish.
DETAILS AND SCHEDULE
Send your chapter abstract of around 500 words to Helena Kupari at helena.kupari[at]helsinki.fi.
Include a short CV, 150 words maximum.
Deadline of abstracts: 15 February 2017
Notification of acceptance by 15 March 2017
Deadline of final articles: 31 December 2017 (at the earliest, subject to change)

CFP for a special issue of Scando-Slavica dedicated to:
History, Memory, Politics: The Russian Revolution 100 Years On
2017 marks the 100 th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, or the “Great October Revolution” as it was called in the Soviet Union. Back then, there was no doubt that the Revolution was truly “great.” But in the 25 years that have passed since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the meaning of the Revolution has become highly contested.
The lack of consensus regarding the meaning and significance of the Revolution represents a challenge
to the goal of current Russian politics of memory. At present, Russia is ruled by a regime that
emphasises the longue durée of Russian history, in order to foster patriotism by means of a positive, coherent and uncontested understanding of the past. Unified textbooks in history have been singled out as particularly important in creating this patriotism. The current regime aims at overall consensus and unity both in terms of a shared understanding of the past and as a characteristic of Russia in the past. Symptomatically, while Vladimir Putin did mention the 1917 Revolution in his annual address to the parliament in December 2016, he provided no clear conclusion on how to understand it, but chose instead to emphasise that in spite
of our difficult past “we are one people.”
In post-Soviet Russia, the celebration of the Revolution has been replaced by the celebration of the end of
the early seventeenth-century Time of Troubles. What makes a celebration of the Revolution particularly difficult in today’s Russia is that its current regime fears revolutions more than anything else, suffice it to mention the “Colour Revolutions” in the “Near Abroad” or the Arabic Spring. At the same time, the regime legitimises its politics with reference to history, by claiming that it sustains Russia’s “thousand-year-old
history.” Although the Revolution inevitably challenges the hegemonic quest for consensus, it is
nevertheless a historical fact that cannot be passed over in silence. Thus, the question is where the revolutionary moment of 1917 – an event that we have been accustomed to think of in terms of
rupture – fits in today? Was it in the long run merely a superficial event? Was it the expression of a revolutionary chaos that had to be overcome? Or was it itself the beginning of a recovery of the
Russian state and its empire from war chaos and dissolution? How are the revolutionary events of 1917 framed in different contexts and by different voices in the contemporary public and academic debates?
This special issue invites scholars to analyse how the 1917 Russian Revolution is understood and
discussed in today’s Russia. We welcome creative and theoretically reflective analyses of an engaging empirical material. We are interested in both how the anniversary itself is celebrated (or not), and in the
ways in which talking about the Revolution have developed since 2000. Possible fields and topics to discuss include (but are not limited to):
* The Revolution in light of the current regime’s instrumentalisation of history
* The Revolution in the Russian public debate – among the opposition as well as the supporters of the
regime
* The Revolution in Russian cultural policy, education and textbooks
* The Revolution and contemporary politics of memory
* The Revolution in contemporary Russian literature
* The Revolution and the Russian Orthodox Church
* Prevailing attitudes to the Revolution in today’s Russia: rupture or transition? Resource or threat to stability?
* Discrepancies between public and scholarly debates on the Revolution
The editors of this special issue will in the first run make a selection of articles for peer review on the basis of submitted abstracts. A final decision on which articles to include will be made after the double blind peer-review process. The special issue of Scando-Slavica will be published as volume 64 (1), 2018. Scando-Slavica is published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group), and is indexed in Scopus, ESCI and ERIH PLUS. Contributions may be submitted in English or Russian.
