Linda Hall Library Fellowships
The Linda Hall Library is pleased to announce its fellowship program for the academic year 2017/18. Fellowships, lasting anywhere from one week to a full academic year, are awarded to outstanding projects in history of science and related science and technology studies fields that make use of the Library’s collections. Awards range from up to $3,000 per month for pre-doctoral fellows to $4,200 per month for post-doctoral fellows.

For the academic year 2017/18, the Linda Hall Library will also launch its innovative 80/20 Fellowship . To prepare graduate students for diverse career options, 80/20 pre-doctoral fellows will spend 80% of their time pursuing dissertation-related research in the Library’s collections and 20% gaining valuable career-related skills as they plan, curate, and mount an exhibition based on their research and the Library’s holdings.
The Linda Hall Library, located next to the University of Missouri-Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo., is among the world’s leading independent research libraries with extensive primary and secondary sources related to environmental sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, earth sciences, engineering, astronomy, meteorology, and the life sciences. The Library holds more than 10,000 rare books dating from the 15 th century to the present, as well as 500,000 monograph volumes and more than 48,000 journal titles from around the world, with especially strong holdings in Soviet and East Asian science. Call for Applications: Jon B. Lovelace Fellowship for the Study of the Alan Lomax Collection
The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress is now accepting applications for Jon B. Lovelace Fellowship for the Study of the Alan Lomax Collection . The application deadline is February 1, 2017.
The Lovelace Fellowship, established in 2015 for the study of the Alan Lomax Collection , pays tribute to the 60-year friendship between philanthropist Jon B. Lovelace and James H. Billington, who served as Librarian of Congress from 1987-2015. Under Billington’s leadership and through the generous benefaction of Jon and Lillian Lovelace, the Alan Lomax Collection was acquired in 1999 by the American Folklife Center and the Association for Cultural Equity at Hunter College. The Lomax Collection is a major collection of ethnographic field audio recordings, motion pictures, photographs, manuscripts, correspondence and other materials that represent Lomax’s lifetime of work to document and analyze traditional music, dance, storytelling and other expressive genres that arise from cultural groups in many parts of the world, particularly the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the Caribbean. Lomax (1915-2002) was one of the greatest documenters of traditional culture during the twentieth century.
The Lovelace Fellowship supports research that contributes significantly to a greater understanding of the work of Alan Lomax and the cultural traditions he documented over the course of a vigorous and highly productive seventy-year career. Conducting full time research on-site at the Library of Congress, the fellowship provides an opportunity for a period of up to 8 months of concentrated use of the collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency in the Library's John W. Kluge Center. A stipend of $4,200 per month supports the Fellow.

The annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists will take place at the Ryerson University (Toronto, ON).
The CAS Annual Conference is held as a part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences with more than 70 national associations in attendance. The theme of the 2017 Congress is "From Far & Wide: The Next 150.” You can find out more details here: http://congress2017.ca/about/theme
This year, CAS overlaps with: Linguistics, Folklore, Comparative Literature, Hungarian Studies, Study of Religion, Women’s and Gender Studies, Study of Education and Higher Education, Jewish Studies, History, Translation Studies, Sociology, and Film Studies.
Proposals for interdisciplinary panels with other associations are very welcome. They are always a highlight at the CAS conference. Proposals are invited for individual papers, panels, roundtable discussions and graduate student activities. Complete panels are preferred. -Slavic Literatures and Cultures (Many panels are dedicated to discussing individual writers and poets from Russia, Belarus, Poland, or the Balkans; various themes (history and literature, WWII, etc.); theoretical approaches including gender studies; history of literature (18th c. to contemporary), music, religion, etc.).
-Ukrainian Studies (The meeting of the Canadian Association Ukrainian Studies (CAUS ) is traditionally part of the CAS conference and therefore Ukrainian Studies are always very prominently represented at the CAS Annual Meeting. A large number of panels are formed on Ukrainian folklore and ethnography; diaspora studies; Ukrainian Canadian literature; museum studies; Holodomor studies; Ukrainian literature, politics, and culture).
Young scholars and graduate students are especially encouraged to participate. We kindly ask our senior CAS membership to support graduate students in applying. Travel grants are available to graduate students. An application form for 2016 Travel Grant will be sent out in March by the Secretary-Treasurer and will also be available on the CAS website.
Deadline for all proposals is 23 January 2016.

Тематика конференции
Исследования в области истории и философии науки (ИФН) в России имеют солидную традицию и бесспорные достижения, которые высоко оцениваются мировым академическим сообществом. Исследовательская работа в этой области активно продолжается сегодня в профильных институтах Российской академии наук и в российских университетах. Учебные курсы по ИФН читаются практически во всех российских университетах и других высших учебных заведениях. В мае 2016-го года российские исследователи и преподаватели высшей школы, работающие в области ИФН, учредили Русское Общество истории и философии науки (РОИФН), которое служит площадкой для консолидации национального профессионального сообщества. Одним из инструментов такой консолидации являются национальные профессиональные конгрессы, первый из которых состоится в Москве 20-21 июня 2018 года. Они продолжаются традицию, которая имела место в СССР, но прервалась вскоре после его распада.
Актуальность развития истории и философии науки и техники в российском социокультурном контексте определяется тем, что Россия в начале 21 века сталкивается с рядом особых возможностей и рисков. Важнейшие среди них связаны с необходимостью опережающим образом развить собственную экономику в определенных наукоемких параметрах. Все они предполагают такую перестройку процесса производства и управления им, при котором в производительных силах на первый план выходят интеллектуальные способности, навыки и знания, горизонтальное саморегулирование творческой деятельности, «мягкие» диалогические формы организации и общения. При этом научно-философские исследования когнитивных и социальных измерений науки и техники, определяясь уровнем развития науки и общества, оказывают существенное обратное влияние на свой предмет. В условиях грядущего технологического уклада эта связь становится особенно явной: исследования науки и техники выходят на лидирующие позиции в странах с развитой экономикой. Вместе с тем их развитие обременено совокупностью методологических проблем, нередко обозначаемой как кризис и требующих углубленных и прорывных исследований. Во многом текущее положение дел побуждает к пересмотру дисциплинарной структуры исследований науки и актуализации их социально-философской компоненты; к определению национальной специфики истории и философии науки в России с точки зрения ее мировоззренческого содержания и практических потребностей.
Цели конференции
Целью конференции является продвижение новой повестки в философии науки и техники, обсуждение инфраструктурных сдвигов в данной области и принятие решений в рамках Русского общества истории и философии науки.

Тезисы принимаются до 1 сентября 2017 года по электронной почте congress18 (sobaka) rshps (tochka) org . Объем тезисов до 10000 знаков, оформление по правилам РИНЦ. Тезисы принимаются в формате Word или RTF в виде приложения к электронному письму. На первой странице тезисов должны быть указаны имя и фамилия автора на русском, а затем на английском языке, место работы, электронный адрес и название предпочтительной секции. За этим следует аннотация на английском языке (100 слов) и основной текст на русском. Сноски концевые, в автоматическом режиме.
Список тезисов, принятых по итогам рецензирования, размещается на сайте конференции к 1 декабря 2017 года. Принятые тезисы докладов публикуются в материалах конференции. Оргкомитет за собой право предложить авторам сделать очный доклад на пленарном заседании, секции или круглом столе, а также стендовый доклад. Авторам лучших докладов будет предложено подготовить полноформатную статью по той же теме для опубликования в Epistemology & Philosophy of Science и других российских рецензируемых журналах.
Условия участия в конференции
К участию приглашаются философы и ученые, интересующиеся проблематикой истории и философии науки.
Организационный сбор составит 500 рублей для учащихся; 1000 рублей для кандидатов и докторов наук.
Зарегистрированные члены РОИФН, уплатившие членские взносы, освобождаются от организационного сбора.
Возможна финансовая поддержка иногородних участников. Соответствующие заявки отправляются вместе с тезисами. Решение будет принято на конкурсной основе в зависимости от доступного финансирования.

XVI International Bakhtin Conference
Bakhtin in the Post-Revolutionary Era
Shanghai, China 6-10 September 2017
In addition to The Complete Works of Mikhail Bakhtin (7 vols) published in Chinese in 2009, recently a new multi-volume publication on Bakhtin appeared in China (2014), featuring five volumes of classic and new research on the global afterlives of Bakhtin. A consummation of more than three decades of concerted investment in research on Bakhtin in China, the five titles include Chinese Scholars on Bakhtin; Russian Scholars on Bakhtin; Euro-American Scholars on Bakhtin; Bakhtin in Conversations; and Bakhtin in the Eyes of Contemporary Scholars. This five-volume publication confirms the special status of Bakhtin Studies in the Chinese academy, while also offering an occasion to take stock of the specific circumstances shaping the extraordinary appeal and impact of Bakhtin in China, not least by examining these in the context of similar developments elsewhere.
As the very place where Bakhtin Studies in China began in 1982, Fudan University is proud to host the 16th International Bakhtin Conference in Shanghai (September 6-10, 2017), under the aegis of its College of Foreign Languages and Literatures. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, and we are genuinely thrilled to provide a forum for reflection on the legacies of Bahktin in the post-revolutionary era. All scholars working on problems related to Bakhtin and history, language, literature, the arts, cultural studies and culture theory, philosophy, and other topics representing the broadest possible range of scholarly and artistic engagement, are warmly welcome to take part in this conference.
The relationship between a Chinese Bakhtin and other interpretations of Bakhtin in the post-revolutionary era features among the major themes we would like to explore at this conference. In addition, we have a few other priorities in mind (listed below, under a-c), though we would also welcome any other abstracts or panel proposals that deal in a focused manner with Bakhtin, the Bakhtin Circle, and the wider significance of their work.
a) Bakhtin and the history of the novel. While Bakhtin’s contribution to narratology has generated voluminous comments, his thoughts on the formal and cultural history of the novel, as articulated in The Dialogic Imagination and in other works, often go unnoticed. We encourage papers and panel proposals that study Bakhtin’s insight into the novel and its history as a literary genre, either on its own or in conjunction with works by other historians and theorists of the novel.
b) Bakhtin in comparative perspective, i.e. comparative explorations of Bakhtin and thinkers or cultural practices from other contexts. Does, for example, the carnivalesque resonate with, or differ from, the Nietzschean conception of tragedy? Or how would we re-think the notion of heteroglossia in relation to Chinese novels that employ multiple perspectives and voices? This is a wide-open area of inquiry; we hope that the proposals we receive would help us define it.
c) Bakhtin at the cutting-edge of literary and cultural studies today. Just a few examples in the form of questions: How would Bakhtin be of use in current discussions of the material turn in the humanities? How would he intervene in discussions of the anthropocene? How might we relate the “dialogic imagination” with Latour’s actor-network theory and inter-species studies undertaken by contemporary scholars? Is Bakhtin’s workd relevant to ‘world literature’ as a specific approach to literature and culture? Ultimately, can we unearth a Cultural Studies (re)turn in Bakhtin studies?
d) Bakhtinian Pedagogy and the present-day educational research, educational practice and its relationship with other types of dialogic and non-dialogic pedagogies. How would Bakhtinian concepts and views of human beings and their interaction with each other influence educational research and practice? How could one re-think and re-interpret present-day practical educational solutions and theories of learning and teaching basing on Bakhtin’s writings and interpretations of his views and concepts? How can one define and maintain the quality of Bakhtinian Dialogic Pedagogy and its relationship with measurement? How is Bakhtin’s work relevant for both educationalists and educational practitioners who use Dialogic Pedagogy today?
Drawing on the excellent contribution of previous International Bakhtin Conferences, we would also like to invite work that engages in interdisciplinary explorations of Bakhtin’s wor(l)d and its extensions into other discursive spheres. We hope to receive proposals from exhibition curators, artists, and editors who have worked on Bakhtin-related cultural projects.
Rules for Submission of Proposals
Academic scholars, artists and teachers within artistic research programs, art practitioners and curators, as well as creative writers, translators, critics, and publishers are welcome to submit their proposals for the conference, either as individual presentations or as proposals for panels.
Individual presentations should be submitted by Jan 15th, 2017 , with names, titles, affiliations, and an abstract. Individual presentations will be peer-reviewed and the results will be communicated to the authors in due time for them to have time to apply for funding. The abstracts should not exceed 300 words. Full papers will be circulated between all the panel members one week before the conference.
Panel organizers are welcome to suggest scholarly panels, creative sessions and laboratories, and round table discussions by December 31st, 2017 at: [email protected]
Panel organizers are requested to submit a description of the panel, a list of participants with names, affiliations, and titles, and short abstracts of the presentations.
Sessions will last 1.5 hours each. The working languages of the conference are English, Russian, and Chinese. Any exceptions will only be considered in advance and in negotiation with the organizing and academic committees on an individual basis.
Each panel consists of 3 or 4 presentations and a discussion. Proposers should nominate a chair and, preferably, also a discussant. Panel organizers will peer-review the presentations they invite for their panels. However, in case of doubt as to the scholarly quality of the proposal, the academic committee will have the final say. The academic committee reserves the right to attach other presentations to an already formed panel if this fits the subject and the schedule.
Roundtable discussions should have a chair (this can be the organizer), a discussant, and 3 to 5 participants.
Presentations by artists, laboratories, and other sessions in artistic and curatorial research and practice are chosen by the proposers, but they have to meet the requirements of the schedule and take into account the mixed academic, artistic, and other audiences of the conference.

THE GOOD. LIFE. Fifth Salzburg Institute Symposium, University of Salzburg, Austria, July 27, 2017
This interdisciplinary conference focuses on theoretical concepts and lived ideals of the good through the prism of literature, philosophy, theology, ethics and cultural studies. Possible guiding questions are: Do transcultural, universally valid conceptions of the good exist? Can we harmonize ethical ideals of the good with the fullness and enjoyment (including desires, sensual pleasures) of life? Religions have often tied “the good life” to self-denial and the repression of carnal, bodily pleasures. To what extent is this attitude a denial of life? In ancient philosophies and some of their modern tributaries, the good was connected to the idea of harmony. To what degree can we still unite aesthetics and the good along these lines? How can the good be measured (if at all), and how do we evaluate or validate good deeds or a good life? How indeed do we assess a good life? What constitutes a good human being? Is a do-gooder a good human being? Of interest is also the material, spiritual or ideational environments conducive to the good or a good life. Moreover, is the good life necessarily something extraordinary, something that stands out, or can average actions or lives be counted “good”? And what about normativity itself? Can what is adequate or correct and therefore in some sense good become a straightjacket of political correctness? Finally, we also welcome reflections on representations of the good. What art forms or styles allow the good to appear? Can art render the good banal or turn it into kitsch? What art forms may obscure or distort the good? Does the ugly, disproportionate, suffering, or violence have place within the good? We are looking forward to your proposals and contributions to this topic.

КУЛЬТ-ТОВАРЫ: МАССОВАЯ ЛИТЕРАТУРА СОВРЕМЕННОЙ РОССИИ МЕЖДУ БУКВОЙ И ЦИФРОЙ
25-27 МАЯ 2017 ГОДА
Организаторы междисциплинарного проекта «Культ-товары» видят главную задачу конференции в том, чтобы продолжить исследование современной российской массовой литературы, начатое на международных научных конференциях «Культ-товары: феномен массовой литературы в современной России» (Санкт-Петербург, 2008), «Культ–товары– XXI : ревизия ценностей (Масскультура и ее потребители)» (Екатеринбург, 2012), «Топография популярной культуры» (Тампере, Финляндия, 2013), «Патриотизм, гражданственность, национализм: политические концепты в современной массовой культуре» (Пермь, 2015). Проект развивается от общего осмысления феномена массовой культуры в постсоветской России к изучению ее актуальных аспектов.
В 2017 году конференция включена в деловую программу XII Международного Санкт-Петербургского книжного салона.
Предметом обсуждения на конференции 2017 года станут следующие проблемы:
• глобальное и национальное в современной массовой литературе;
• трансформация сообществ в цифровую эпоху и переопределение границ популярного и элитарного;
• динамика развития «старых» жанров массовой литературы (детектив, фантастика, фэнтези, любовный роман и др.) и возникновение «новых» жанров и жанровых разновидностей в условиях цифровой эпохи;
• сетевые жанры массовой литературы (фанфикшн и др.);

Variations is the journal for comparative literary studies at the University of Zurich. It publishes contributions in three languages (German, French and English) and is a forum for research that helps advance academic exchange in literary studies. Each issue gathers articles on a particular topic, followed by literary and artistic contributions, as well as reviews of recently published research in comparative literary studies.

The topic of humour is particularly well suited to become the focus of a multilingual journal of comparative literature. The etymology of the term already points to its long and complex history of linguistic change, differentiation and reinterpretation. Originating in the Latin word humores , which refers to classical and early modern humoral pathology and concomitant theories of
temperament and character, humour became increasingly prominent in literature through works such as Gargantua et Pantagruel , Don Quixote and Tristram Shandy. As the term gained in importance and prestige, it became associated more particularly with England and the middle classes.
Through the eighteenth century, humour developed from a pejorative term for socially deviant behaviour into a form which enables the reinterpretation of nonconformity as something positive, signifying individuality and style.
The development of humour thus witnesses to a long and intense negotiation of concepts of bourgeois subjectivity between idealistic principles and their individual, realistic manifestations.
This process involves various rhetorical forms of the comic: interruption, reversal, mechanization and masquerade. The complex, conflicting relationship between self-conception and its realisation becomes visible in the ideal of a self that is plural and constituted by an interplay of contradictions, contrasts and ambiguities. Plurality in this sense implies, among other things, the
concept of narrative polyphony and hermeneutic concepts of meaning which are probed and negotiated in literature. Within the German-speaking world, it was especially Jean Paul who drew on humour’s capacity to combine opposing perspectives for his aesthetic theory and practice.
From this basis, two extreme positions with regard to humour developed in the nineteenth century. On the one hand, humour was perceived as a pathologically self-reflexive form of narration which should be purged from literature. On the other hand, humour was celebrated as a form enabling the reconciliation of opposites.
Humour is thus situated between criticism and the prospect of integrative closure. This also points to the way in which humour is connected to the resistance inherent in the comic, which, despite and through its subordination to the tragic genre, remains its critical counterpart.
Examples of this from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century range from Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of the Dionysian to Mikhail Bakhtin’s revaluation of the carnivalesque and Henri Bergson’s delineation of a philosophical theory of laughter. In a supplement to his theory of ‘Witz’ (wit/joke), Sigmund Freud even concedes to humour the capacity to occasionally wrest enjoyment from the superego. Within a larger historical perspective, humour in the twentieth century gains a special position as a means to cope with and confront totalitarian regimes.
Humour oscillates and changes; it lends importance to the unimportant and makes the significant appear insignificant. To what extent and how permanently it does so remains to be established anew (and in actu) in each specific situation. Due to its focus on the subjective, humour can best be studied in its manifestation in a concrete literary text. The range of relevant aspects and
questions to be discussed is thus wide:
• What is the role of humour in different linguistic and social contexts (aesthetically, historically, as a medium of communication)? How is humour transmitted from one context to another, and how are different approaches to humour demarcated from each other?
• How can humour be described in contrast to other forms of the comic (irony, wit, satire, laughter, comedy)?
• What rhetorical structure inheres in the humoristic? How can it be identified as a form either of criticism or of reconciliation? Can such labels be taken as unambiguous, or are there transitions and intersections between them?
• How have humour and its conceptualisation changed in the course of literary history and the history of theory and criticism? Where do processes of transformation, caesuras and ruptures manifest themselves?
• What is the contemporary discourse of humour, and how does it manifest itself in modern texts?

Школа перспективных исследований – научно-образовательный greenfield Тюменского госуниверситета – начнет свою работу в сентябре 2017 года. После выхода на проектную мощность штат Школы будет состоять из 40 НПР из разных городов и стран, работающих в различных социальных и гуманитарных науках, включая их пересечения с биологией и информационными технологиями. В Школе будут учиться около 400 студентов бакалавриата и 100 студентов магистратуры; в будущем вероятно открытие PhD программы. Стратегической целью Школы является вклад в мировую дискуссию о наиболее актуальных проблемах мирового социального и гуманитарного знания, выходящий за пределы исследований о России, и обеспечение уникального высококлассного образования для наиболее подготовленных и талантливых студентов из России и других стран.
Исследовательская программа Школы призвана обеспечить ее включенность в мировую научную повестку в качестве институции, обладающей собственной академической идентичностью и международно-признанной экспертизой по ряду ключевых исследовательских направлений. Школа сделает ставку на мультидисциплинарные исследовательские команды, интегрированные в мировые академические сети, которые заменят собой дисциплинарные кафедры и обеспечат интенсивную коммуникацию между НПР Школы как внутри исследовательских проектов, так и между ними.

УСЛОВИЯ РАБОТЫ
Позиция постоянного НПР Школы предполагает активную исследовательскую деятельность в составе одного из мультидисциплинарных исследовательских проектов и преподавание на уровне бакалавриата и магистратуры. Средняя преподавательская нагрузка в течение учебного года будет составлять 8-12 аудиторных академических часов в неделю, в зависимости от типа курсов. Школа будет работать по системе квартилей (четыре 8-недельных учебных квартиля); постоянные НПР должны буду преподавать не мене 3-х квартилей в год, с пропорциональным перераспределением преподавательской нагрузки в случае отсутствия нагрузки в одном из квартилей. Первоначальный контракт – продолжительностью в 3 года, с возможностью продления. Размер заработной платы будет устанавливаться индивидуально в зависимости от академического уровня кандидатов и их потенциального вклада в развитие Школы, при этом даже минимальная заработная плата обеспечит возможность съема жилья и комфортного существования в Тюмени без необходимости дополнительных заработков.
ПРОЦЕДУРА ПОИСКА КАНДИДАТОВ
К моменту открытия и приема первых студентов в сентябре 2017 года Школа планирует принять на работу около 20 НПР. Call for Applications: Jon B. Lovelace Fellowship for the Study of the Alan Lomax Collection
The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress is now accepting applications for Jon B. Lovelace Fellowship for the Study of the Alan Lomax Collection . The application deadline is February 1, 2017.
The Lovelace Fellowship, established in 2015 for the study of the Alan Lomax Collection , pays tribute to the 60-year friendship between philanthropist Jon B. Lovelace and James H. Billington, who served as Librarian of Congress from 1987-2015. Under Billington’s leadership and through the generous benefaction of Jon and Lillian Lovelace, the Alan Lomax Collection was acquired in 1999 by the American Folklife Center and the Association for Cultural Equity at Hunter College. The Lomax Collection is a major collection of ethnographic field audio recordings, motion pictures, photographs, manuscripts, correspondence and other materials that represent Lomax’s lifetime of work to document and analyze traditional music, dance, storytelling and other expressive genres that arise from cultural groups in many parts of the world, particularly the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the Caribbean. Lomax (1915-2002) was one of the greatest documenters of traditional culture during the twentieth century.
The Lovelace Fellowship supports research that contributes significantly to a greater understanding of the work of Alan Lomax and the cultural traditions he documented over the course of a vigorous and highly productive seventy-year career. Conducting full time research on-site at the Library of Congress, the fellowship provides an opportunity for a period of up to 8 months of concentrated use of the collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency in the Library's John W. Kluge Center. A stipend of $4,200 per month supports the Fellow.

The annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists will take place at the Ryerson University (Toronto, ON).
The CAS Annual Conference is held as a part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences with more than 70 national associations in attendance. The theme of the 2017 Congress is "From Far & Wide: The Next 150.” You can find out more details here: http://congress2017.ca/about/theme
This year, CAS overlaps with: Linguistics, Folklore, Comparative Literature, Hungarian Studies, Study of Religion, Women’s and Gender Studies, Study of Education and Higher Education, Jewish Studies, History, Translation Studies, Sociology, and Film Studies.
Proposals for interdisciplinary panels with other associations are very welcome. They are always a highlight at the CAS conference. -Ukrainian Studies (The meeting of the Canadian Association Ukrainian Studies (CAUS ) is traditionally part of the CAS conference and therefore Ukrainian Studies are always very prominently represented at the CAS Annual Meeting. A large number of panels are formed on Ukrainian folklore and ethnography; diaspora studies; Ukrainian Canadian literature; museum studies; Holodomor studies; Ukrainian literature, politics, and culture).
Young scholars and graduate students are especially encouraged to participate. We kindly ask our senior CAS membership to support graduate students in applying. Travel grants are available to graduate students. An application form for 2016 Travel Grant will be sent out in March by the Secretary-Treasurer and will also be available on the CAS website.

Тематика конференции
Исследования в области истории и философии науки (ИФН) в России имеют солидную традицию и бесспорные достижения, которые высоко оцениваются мировым академическим сообществом. Исследовательская работа в этой области активно продолжается сегодня в профильных институтах Российской академии наук и в российских университетах. Учебные курсы по ИФН читаются практически во всех российских университетах и других высших учебных заведениях. В мае 2016-го года российские исследователи и преподаватели высшей школы, работающие в области ИФН, учредили Русское Общество истории и философии науки (РОИФН), которое служит площадкой для консолидации национального профессионального сообщества. Одним из инструментов такой консолидации являются национальные профессиональные конгрессы, первый из которых состоится в Москве 20-21 июня 2018 года. Они продолжаются традицию, которая имела место в СССР, но прервалась вскоре после его распада.
Актуальность развития истории и философии науки и техники в российском социокультурном контексте определяется тем, что Россия в начале 21 века сталкивается с рядом особых возможностей и рисков. Важнейшие среди них связаны с необходимостью опережающим образом развить собственную экономику в определенных наукоемких параметрах. Все они предполагают такую перестройку процесса производства и управления им, при котором в производительных силах на первый план выходят интеллектуальные способности, навыки и знания, горизонтальное саморегулирование творческой деятельности, «мягкие» диалогические формы организации и общения. При этом научно-философские исследования когнитивных и социальных измерений науки и техники, определяясь уровнем развития науки и общества, оказывают существенное обратное влияние на свой предмет. В условиях грядущего технологического уклада эта связь становится особенно явной: исследования науки и техники выходят на лидирующие позиции в странах с развитой экономикой. Вместе с тем их развитие обременено совокупностью методологических проблем, нередко обозначаемой как кризис и требующих углубленных и прорывных исследований. Во многом текущее положение дел побуждает к пересмотру дисциплинарной структуры исследований науки и актуализации их социально-философской компоненты; к определению национальной специфики истории и философии науки в России с точки зрения ее мировоззренческого содержания и практических потребностей.
Цели конференции
Целью конференции является продвижение новой повестки в философии науки и техники, обсуждение инфраструктурных сдвигов в данной области и принятие решений в рамках Русского общества истории и философии науки.

Тезисы принимаются до 1 сентября 2017 года по электронной почте congress18 (sobaka) rshps (tochka) org . Объем тезисов до 10000 знаков, оформление по правилам РИНЦ. Тезисы принимаются в формате Word или RTF в виде приложения к электронному письму. На первой странице тезисов должны быть указаны имя и фамилия автора на русском, а затем на английском языке, место работы, электронный адрес и название предпочтительной секции. За этим следует аннотация на английском языке (100 слов) и основной текст на русском. Сноски концевые, в автоматическом режиме.
Список тезисов, принятых по итогам рецензирования, размещается на сайте конференции к 1 декабря 2017 года. Принятые тезисы докладов публикуются в материалах конференции. Оргкомитет за собой право предложить авторам сделать очный доклад на пленарном заседании, секции или круглом столе, а также стендовый доклад. Авторам лучших докладов будет предложено подготовить полноформатную статью по той же теме для опубликования в Epistemology & Philosophy of Science и других российских рецензируемых журналах.
Условия участия в конференции
К участию приглашаются философы и ученые, интересующиеся проблематикой истории и философии науки.
Организационный сбор составит 500 рублей для учащихся; 1000 рублей для кандидатов и докторов наук.
Зарегистрированные члены РОИФН, уплатившие членские взносы, освобождаются от организационного сбора.
Возможна финансовая поддержка иногородних участников. Соответствующие заявки отправляются вместе с тезисами. Решение будет принято на конкурсной основе в зависимости от доступного финансирования.

XVI International Bakhtin Conference
Bakhtin in the Post-Revolutionary Era
Shanghai, China 6-10 September 2017
In addition to The Complete Works of Mikhail Bakhtin (7 vols) published in Chinese in 2009, recently a new multi-volume publication on Bakhtin appeared in China (2014), featuring five volumes of classic and new research on the global afterlives of Bakhtin. A consummation of more than three decades of concerted investment in research on Bakhtin in China, the five titles include Chinese Scholars on Bakhtin; Russian Scholars on Bakhtin; Euro-American Scholars on Bakhtin; Bakhtin in Conversations; and Bakhtin in the Eyes of Contemporary Scholars. This five-volume publication confirms the special status of Bakhtin Studies in the Chinese academy, while also offering an occasion to take stock of the specific circumstances shaping the extraordinary appeal and impact of Bakhtin in China, not least by examining these in the context of similar developments elsewhere.
As the very place where Bakhtin Studies in China began in 1982, Fudan University is proud to host the 16th International Bakhtin Conference in Shanghai (September 6-10, 2017), under the aegis of its College of Foreign Languages and Literatures. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, and we are genuinely thrilled to provide a forum for reflection on the legacies of Bahktin in the post-revolutionary era. All scholars working on problems related to Bakhtin and history, language, literature, the arts, cultural studies and culture theory, philosophy, and other topics representing the broadest possible range of scholarly and artistic engagement, are warmly welcome to take part in this conference.
The relationship between a Chinese Bakhtin and other interpretations of Bakhtin in the post-revolutionary era features among the major themes we would like to explore at this conference. In addition, we have a few other priorities in mind (listed below, under a-c), though we would also welcome any other abstracts or panel proposals that deal in a focused manner with Bakhtin, the Bakhtin Circle, and the wider significance of their work.
a) Bakhtin and the history of the novel. While Bakhtin’s contribution to narratology has generated voluminous comments, his thoughts on the formal and cultural history of the novel, as articulated in The Dialogic Imagination and in other works, often go unnoticed. We encourage papers and panel proposals that study Bakhtin’s insight into the novel and its history as a literary genre, either on its own or in conjunction with works by other historians and theorists of the novel.
b) Bakhtin in comparative perspective, i.e. comparative explorations of Bakhtin and thinkers or cultural practices from other contexts. Does, for example, the carnivalesque resonate with, or differ from, the Nietzschean conception of tragedy? Or how would we re-think the notion of heteroglossia in relation to Chinese novels that employ multiple perspectives and voices? This is a wide-open area of inquiry; we hope that the proposals we receive would help us define it.
c) Bakhtin at the cutting-edge of literary and cultural studies today. Just a few examples in the form of questions: How would Bakhtin be of use in current discussions of the material turn in the humanities? How would he intervene in discussions of the anthropocene? How might we relate the “dialogic imagination” with Latour’s actor-network theory and inter-species studies undertaken by contemporary scholars? Is Bakhtin’s workd relevant to ‘world literature’ as a specific approach to literature and culture? Ultimately, can we unearth a Cultural Studies (re)turn in Bakhtin studies?
d) Bakhtinian Pedagogy and the present-day educational research, educational practice and its relationship with other types of dialogic and non-dialogic pedagogies. How would Bakhtinian concepts and views of human beings and their interaction with each other influence educational research and practice? How could one re-think and re-interpret present-day practical educational solutions and theories of learning and teaching basing on Bakhtin’s writings and interpretations of his views and concepts? How can one define and maintain the quality of Bakhtinian Dialogic Pedagogy and its relationship with measurement? How is Bakhtin’s work relevant for both educationalists and educational practitioners who use Dialogic Pedagogy today?
Drawing on the excellent contribution of previous International Bakhtin Conferences, we would also like to invite work that engages in interdisciplinary explorations of Bakhtin’s wor(l)d and its extensions into other discursive spheres. We hope to receive proposals from exhibition curators, artists, and editors who have worked on Bakhtin-related cultural projects.
Rules for Submission of Proposals
Academic scholars, artists and teachers within artistic research programs, art practitioners and curators, as well as creative writers, translators, critics, and publishers are welcome to submit their proposals for the conference, either as individual presentations or as proposals for panels.
Individual presentations should be submitted by Jan 15th, 2017 , with names, titles, affiliations, and an abstract. Individual presentations will be peer-reviewed and the results will be communicated to the authors in due time for them to have time to apply for funding. The abstracts should not exceed 300 words. Full papers will be circulated between all the panel members one week before the conference.
Panel organizers are welcome to suggest scholarly panels, creative sessions and laboratories, and round table discussions by December 31st, 2017 at: [email protected]
Panel organizers are requested to submit a description of the panel, a list of participants with names, affiliations, and titles, and short abstracts of the presentations.
Sessions will last 1.5 hours each. The working languages of the conference are English, Russian, and Chinese. Any exceptions will only be considered in advance and in negotiation with the organizing and academic committees on an individual basis.
Each panel consists of 3 or 4 presentations and a discussion. Proposers should nominate a chair and, preferably, also a discussant. Panel organizers will peer-review the presentations they invite for their panels. However, in case of doubt as to the scholarly quality of the proposal, the academic committee will have the final say. The academic committee reserves the right to attach other presentations to an already formed panel if this fits the subject and the schedule.
Roundtable discussions should have a chair (this can be the organizer), a discussant, and 3 to 5 participants.
Presentations by artists, laboratories, and other sessions in artistic and curatorial research and practice are chosen by the proposers, but they have to meet the requirements of the schedule and take into account the mixed academic, artistic, and other audiences of the conference.

THE GOOD. LIFE. Fifth Salzburg Institute Symposium, University of Salzburg, Austria, July 27, 2017
This interdisciplinary conference focuses on theoretical concepts and lived ideals of the good through the prism of literature, philosophy, theology, ethics and cultural studies. Possible guiding questions are: Do transcultural, universally valid conceptions of the good exist? Can we harmonize ethical ideals of the good with the fullness and enjoyment (including desires, sensual pleasures) of life? Religions have often tied “the good life” to self-denial and the repression of carnal, bodily pleasures. To what extent is this attitude a denial of life? In ancient philosophies and some of their modern tributaries, the good was connected to the idea of harmony. To what degree can we still unite aesthetics and the good along these lines? How can the good be measured (if at all), and how do we evaluate or validate good deeds or a good life? How indeed do we assess a good life? What constitutes a good human being? Is a do-gooder a good human being? Of interest is also the material, spiritual or ideational environments conducive to the good or a good life. Moreover, is the good life necessarily something extraordinary, something that stands out, or can average actions or lives be counted “good”? And what about normativity itself? Can what is adequate or correct and therefore in some sense good become a straightjacket of political correctness? Finally, we also welcome reflections on representations of the good. What art forms or styles allow the good to appear? Can art render the good banal or turn it into kitsch? What art forms may obscure or distort the good? Does the ugly, disproportionate, suffering, or violence have place within the good? We are looking forward to your proposals and contributions to this topic.

Организаторы междисциплинарного проекта «Культ-товары» видят главную задачу конференции в том, чтобы продолжить исследование современной российской массовой литературы, начатое на международных научных конференциях «Культ-товары: феномен массовой литературы в современной России» (Санкт-Петербург, 2008), «Культ–товары– XXI : ревизия ценностей (Масскультура и ее потребители)» (Екатеринбург, 2012), «Топография популярной культуры» (Тампере, Финляндия, 2013), «Патриотизм, гражданственность, национализм: политические концепты в современной массовой культуре» (Пермь, 2015). Variations is the journal for comparative literary studies at the University of Zurich. It publishes contributions in three languages (German, French and English) and is a forum for research that helps advance academic exchange in literary studies. Each issue gathers articles on a particular topic, followed by literary and artistic contributions, as well as reviews of recently published research in comparative literary studies.

The topic of humour is particularly well suited to become the focus of a multilingual journal of comparative literature. The etymology of the term already points to its long and complex history of linguistic change, differentiation and reinterpretation. Originating in the Latin word humores , which refers to classical and early modern humoral pathology and concomitant theories of
temperament and character, humour became increasingly prominent in literature through works such as Gargantua et Pantagruel , Don Quixote and Tristram Shandy. As the term gained in importance and prestige, it became associated more particularly with England and the middle classes.
Through the eighteenth century, humour developed from a pejorative term for socially deviant behaviour into a form which enables the reinterpretation of nonconformity as something positive, signifying individuality and style.
The development of humour thus witnesses to a long and intense negotiation of concepts of bourgeois subjectivity between idealistic principles and their individual, realistic manifestations.
This process involves various rhetorical forms of the comic: interruption, reversal, mechanization and masquerade. The complex, conflicting relationship between self-conception and its realisation becomes visible in the ideal of a self that is plural and constituted by an interplay of contradictions, contrasts and ambiguities. Plurality in this sense implies, among other things, the
concept of narrative polyphony and hermeneutic concepts of meaning which are probed and negotiated in literature. Within the German-speaking world, it was especially Jean Paul who drew on humour’s capacity to combine opposing perspectives for his aesthetic theory and practice.
From this basis, two extreme positions with regard to humour developed in the nineteenth century. On the one hand, humour was perceived as a pathologically self-reflexive form of narration which should be purged from literature. On the other hand, humour was celebrated as a form enabling the reconciliation of opposites.
Humour is thus situated between criticism and the prospect of integrative closure. This also points to the way in which humour is connected to the resistance inherent in the comic, which, despite and through its subordination to the tragic genre, remains its critical counterpart.
Examples of this from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century range from Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of the Dionysian to Mikhail Bakhtin’s revaluation of the carnivalesque and Henri Bergson’s delineation of a philosophical theory of laughter. In a supplement to his theory of ‘Witz’ (wit/joke), Sigmund Freud even concedes to humour the capacity to occasionally wrest enjoyment from the superego. Within a larger historical perspective, humour in the twentieth century gains a special position as a means to cope with and confront totalitarian regimes.
Humour oscillates and changes; it lends importance to the unimportant and makes the significant appear insignificant. To what extent and how permanently it does so remains to be established anew (and in actu) in each specific situation. Due to its focus on the subjective, humour can best be studied in its manifestation in a concrete literary text. The range of relevant aspects and
questions to be discussed is thus wide:
• What is the role of humour in different linguistic and social contexts (aesthetically, historically, as a medium of communication)? How is humour transmitted from one context to another, and how are different approaches to humour demarcated from each other?
• How can humour be described in contrast to other forms of the comic (irony, wit, satire, laughter, comedy)?
• What rhetorical structure inheres in the humoristic? How can it be identified as a form either of criticism or of reconciliation? Can such labels be taken as unambiguous, or are there transitions and intersections between them?
• How have humour and its conceptualisation changed in the course of literary history and the history of theory and criticism? Where do processes of transformation, caesuras and ruptures manifest themselves?
• What is the contemporary discourse of humour, and how does it manifest itself in modern texts?

О ШКОЛЕ
Школа перспективных исследований – научно-образовательный greenfield Тюменского госуниверситета – начнет свою работу в сентябре 2017 года. После выхода на проектную мощность штат Школы будет состоять из 40 НПР из разных городов и стран, работающих в различных социальных и гуманитарных науках, включая их пересечения с биологией и информационными технологиями. В Школе будут учиться около 400 студентов бакалавриата и 100 студентов магистратуры; в будущем вероятно открытие PhD программы. Стратегической целью Школы является вклад в мировую дискуссию о наиболее актуальных проблемах мирового социального и гуманитарного знания, выходящий за пределы исследований о России, и обеспечение уникального высококлассного образования для наиболее подготовленных и талантливых студентов из России и других стран.
Исследовательская программа Школы призвана обеспечить ее включенность в мировую научную повестку в качестве институции, обладающей собственной академической идентичностью и международно-признанной экспертизой по ряду ключевых исследовательских направлений. Школа сделает ставку на мультидисциплинарные исследовательские команды, интегрированные в мировые академические сети, которые заменят собой дисциплинарные кафедры и обеспечат интенсивную коммуникацию между НПР Школы как внутри исследовательских проектов, так и между ними.
Образовательная программа Школы позволит студентам комплексно изучать социогуманитарные дисциплины, включая их пересечения с IT и науками о жизни, в ситуации личной вовлеченности и свободного выбора образовательной траектории. Бакалаврскую программу будет отличать ставка на интерактивные занятия в небольших группах, выбор специальности после второго курса, комплекс обязательных дисциплин, построенных по модели core curriculum ведущих мировых университетов, и свободный выбор 1/3 предметов из числа авторских курсов, спроектированных НПР Школы.
Мы приглашаем принять участие в конкурсе специалистов в различных дисциплинах (в первую очередь – социологии и антропологии, экономики, кино и медиа, культурных исследований, истории, биологии и информационных технологий), желающих работать на стыке дисциплин и внести свой творческий вклад в дизайн новой научно-образовательной институции.
ТРЕБОВАНИЯ К КАНДИДАТАМ НА ДОЛЖНОСТИ НПР
– активная исследовательская деятельность;
– знание английского языка, позволяющее эффективно участвовать в академической дискуссии;
– демонстрируемая включенность в мировой исследовательский контекст (публикации в международных рецензируемых журналах; опыт обучения, стажировок, преподавания в ведущих университетах; опыт участия в международных исследовательских проектах; включенность исследований в актуальные мировые научные полемики и т.п.);
– способность использовать предметные исследования для развития общетеоретических рамок;
– интерес к преподаванию на уровне бакалавриата и магистратуры в современных форматах;
– научная степень кандидата наук или выше; кандидаты со степенью магистра могут участвовать в конкурсе при наличии четких планов по защите диссертации.
УСЛОВИЯ РАБОТЫ
Позиция постоянного НПР Школы предполагает активную исследовательскую деятельность в составе одного из мультидисциплинарных исследовательских проектов и преподавание на уровне бакалавриата и магистратуры. Средняя преподавательская нагрузка в течение учебного года будет составлять 8-12 аудиторных академических часов в неделю, в зависимости от типа курсов. Школа будет работать по системе квартилей (четыре 8-недельных учебных квартиля); постоянные НПР должны буду преподавать не мене 3-х квартилей в год, с пропорциональным перераспределением преподавательской нагрузки в случае отсутствия нагрузки в одном из квартилей. Первоначальный контракт – продолжительностью в 3 года, с возможностью продления. Размер заработной платы будет устанавливаться индивидуально в зависимости от академического уровня кандидатов и их потенциального вклада в развитие Школы, при этом даже минимальная заработная плата обеспечит возможность съема жилья и комфортного существования в Тюмени без необходимости дополнительных заработков.
ПРОЦЕДУРА ПОИСКА КАНДИДАТОВ
К моменту открытия и приема первых студентов в сентябре 2017 года Школа планирует принять на работу около 20 НПР. Если Вас интересует работа в Школе, и Вы отвечаете нашим требованиям, просьба прислать свое полное CV , мотивационное письмо, включающее в себя подробное описание возможных направлений вашей исследовательской деятельности в рамках мультдисциплинарных исследовательских проектов и три рекомендательных письма не позднее 20 января 2017 года.
Около 60 кандидатов, вошедшие в short list , будут приглашены в конце февраля - начале марта 2017 на одну из двух трехдневных проектно-аналитических сессий, в ходе которой они, объединившись в мультидисциплинарные команды, смогут предложить Школе и защитить в научной дискуссии предварительные планы перспективных исследовательских проектов. Рабочий язык сессий – английский. Решение о найме будет приниматься с учетом их результатов.
