Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies: “Risk and Fortune”
During the academic year 2017/18, the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies will focus on the topic of “Risk and Fortune.” Notions of risk have been important to human societies for centuries. Soothsaying, insurance, medical prognostication, financial investment, environmental protection, and gambling all contend with—or try to contain—possible losses. Conversely, good fortune has had its talismans and theorists throughout history. How have different cultures tried to tame chance, or comprehend its whims? To what degree have the practices of commerce relied upon, or alternatively reified, risk? Do technological systems generate hazards they are not capable of controlling? This two-year seminar will bring together scholars working on risk and fortune in historical societies around the world in all time periods, on topics including (but not restricted to) economics, science, religion, industry, statistics, and agriculture.
The Center will offer a limited number of visiting research fellowships for one or two semesters, running from September through January and from February through June.
Early career scholars must have their doctoral degrees in hand at the time of the appointment. Fellows are expected to live in the Princeton area in order to take an active part in the intellectual interchange with other members of the Seminar. Funds are limited, and candidates are, therefore, strongly urged to apply to other grant-giving institutions as well as the Center if they wish to come for a full year.
To apply please link to: http://jobs.princeton.edu , requisition #1600646. The deadline for receipt of applications for fellowships for 2017/2018 is December 1, 2016, 11:59 pm EST. Please note that we will not accept faxed applications.
Applicants must apply online and submit a CV, cover letter, research proposal, abstract of proposal, and contact information for three references as part of the application process. For further information about the Davis Center, please go to http://www.princeton.edu/dav .
Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The Study Group on Eighteenth-Century Russia welcomes proposals for contributions to the X International Conference of the Study Group, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2018. This conference will be held in Strasbourg, France, from Friday 6 July until Wednesday 11 July 2018.
1) PROPOSALS
The conference will be organised around 15 90-minute panels, each consisting of three 20-minute papers, with the rest of the allotted time for questions and discussion.
Proposals from members should take one of two forms:
EITHER
a) an individual paper, where the speaker should provide their (provisional) title and a brief summary of its content/argument (of no more than 250 words)
OR
b) a themed panel of three papers, where the organiser (not necessarily the proposed chair) of the panel should give the names of the contributors (who should come from more than one country), the titles of their papers, and summaries of each paper (of not more than 250 words)
Members should not propose more than one themed panel or more than one individual paper .
Proposals should be sent to the conference email address – [email protected] – by no later than 3 1 January 2017.
Please note, once all proposals (whether panels or papers) have been submitted, they will be considered together by the conference organisers with a aim of creating a draft programme that reflects the breadth and innovation of the research undertaken by colleagues who work on eighteenth-century Russia. It should be stressed that the process will not simply be a “first come, first served”. With the commitment to hold plenary sessions, rather than in parallel, this conference is an important opportunity to reflect the interdisciplinary and collaborative spirt of the Study Group in its anniversary year. At the same time, spaces are necessarily limited and members are asked for their understanding if there have to be some negotiations or compromises in drafting (and subsequently finalising) the conference programme.
2) FEE
There is a conference fee of €50, which covers the cost of attendance, a cocktail reception, the various excursions, and the conference banquet. A spouse/partner rate of €40 is also available.
3) FUNDING
The DHI Moskau and the Study Group have some funds available to support travel and/or accommodation for members who, lacking institutional or other sources of funding, would otherwise be unable to participate in the conference. Once the paper and panel proposals have been assessed, and the draft programme has been circulated, applications for these funds will be welcome.
4) ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS
Please note that the conference fee does not include accommodation costs or meals (with the exception of the conference banquet). As previously proposed by the conference organisers, and agreed at the Group’s annual meeting, a list of accommodation options in areas close to the conference venue (and in several price brackets) will be circulated in advance so that conference attendees can find affordable rooms that best suit their needs. Likewise, there are many places to eat within easy distance of the conference venue.
This Call for Papers will also be made available at: http://www.sgecr.co.uk/
Updates on the conference will be published at: https://www.facebook.com/SGECR10InternationalConference/
Any questions should be raised through the conference email address: [email protected]

Scientiae 2017: Call for Papers
Proposals are invited for the sixth annual Scientiae conference on disciplines of knowing in the early modern world (roughly 1400-1800), which will take place at the University of Padua , 19-22 April 2017 . Our Keynote Speakers will be Paula Findlen (Stanford), Claire Preston (QM London), and Antonio Clericuzio (Roma Tre).
The major premise of this conference series is that knowledge during this period was inherently interdisciplinary, involving complex mixtures of theories, practices and objects, which had yet to be separated into their modern ‘scientific’ configurations. Although centred on attempts to understand and control the natural world, Scientiae addresses natural philosophy, natural history, and the scientiae mixtae within a wide range of related fields, including but not restricted to Biblical exegesis, medicine, artisan practice and theory, logic, humanism, alchemy, magic, witchcraft, demonology, divinatory practices, astronomy, astrology, music, antiquarianism, experimentation and commerce.
This year attention is especially given to the history of early modern knowledge and erudition, the history of universities, particularly though not exclusively the history of the university of Padua, as well as the history of the book and the history of political thought.
Please email your 250-word abstract, together with a one-page CV to scientiaepadua [at] gmail.com .
The deadline for abstract submission is 15 December 2016 . We shall be notifying the selection outcome by 15 January.

16 th INTERNATIONAL BAKHTIN CONFERENCE
Bakhtin in the Post-Revolutionary Era
Shanghai, China 6-10 September 2017
Call for Papers, Panels, and Presentations
In addition to The Complete Works of Mikhail Bakhtin (7 vols) published in Chinese in 2009, recently a new multi-volume publication on Bakhtin appeared in China (2014), featuring five volumes of classic and new research on the global afterlives of Bakhtin. A consummation of more than three decades of concerted investment in research on Bakhtin in China, the five titles include Chinese Scholars on Bakhtin ; Russian Scholars on Bakhtin ; Euro-American Scholars on Bakhtin ; Bakhtin in Conversations ; and Bakhtin in the Eyes of Contemporary Scholars . This five-volume publication confirms the special status of Bakhtin Studies in the Chinese academy, while also offering an occasion to take stock of the specific circumstances shaping the extraordinary appeal and impact of Bakhtin in China, not least by examining these in the context of similar developments elsewhere.
As the very place where Bakhtin Studies in China began in 1982, Fudan University is proud to host the 16 th International Bakhtin Conference in Shanghai (September 6-10, 2017), under the aegis of its College of Foreign Languages and Literatures. 2017 marks the 100 th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, and we are genuinely thrilled to provide a forum for reflection on the legacies of Bahktin in the post-revolutionary era. All scholars working on problems related to Bakhtin and history, language, literature, the arts, cultural studies and culture theory, philosophy, and other topics representing the broadest possible range of scholarly and artistic engagement, are warmly welcome to take part in this conference.
The relationship between a Chinese Bakhtin and other interpretations of Bakhtin in the post-revolutionary era features among the major themes we would like to explore at this conference. In addition, we have a few other priorities in mind (listed below, under a-c), though we would also welcome any other abstracts or panel proposals that deal in a focused manner with Bakhtin, the Bakhtin Circle, and the wider significance of their work.
a) Bakhtin and the history of the novel. While Bakhtin’s contribution to narratology has generated voluminous comments, his thoughts on the formal and cultural history of the novel, as articulated in The Dialogic Imagination and in other works, often go unnoticed. We encourage papers and panel proposals that study Bakhtin’s insight into the novel and its history as a literary genre, either on its own or in conjunction with works by other historians and theorists of the novel.
b) Bakhtin in comparative perspective, i.e. comparative explorations of Bakhtin and thinkers or cultural practices from other contexts. Does, for example, the carnivalesque resonate with, or differ from, the Nietzschean conception of tragedy? Or how would we re-think the notion of heteroglossia in relation to Chinese novels that employ multiple perspectives and voices? This is a wide-open area of inquiry; we hope that the proposals we receive would help us define it.
c) Bakhtin at the cutting-edge of literary and cultural studies today. Just a few examples in the form of questions: How would Bakhtin be of use in current discussions of the material turn in the humanities? How would he intervene in discussions of the anthropocene? How might we relate the “dialogic imagination” with Latour’s actor-network theory and inter-species studies undertaken by contemporary scholars? Is Bakhtin’s workd relevant to ‘world literature’ as a specific approach to literature and culture? Ultimately, can we unearth a Cultural Studies (re)turn in Bakhtin studies?
Drawing on the excellent contribution of previous International Bakhtin Conferences, we would also like to invite work that engages in interdisciplinary explorations of Bakhtin’s wor(l)d and its extensions into other discursive spheres. We hope to receive proposals from exhibition curators, artists, and editors who have worked on Bakhtin-related cultural projects.
Rules for Submission of Proposals
Academic scholars, artists and teachers within artistic research programs, art practitioners and curators, as well as creative writers, translators, critics, and publishers are welcome to submit their proposals for the conference, either as individual presentations or as proposals for panels.
Individual presentations should be submitted by Jan 15th, 20 17 , with names, titles, affiliations, and an abstract. Individual presentations will be peer-reviewed and the results will be communicated to the authors in due time for them to have time to apply for funding. The abstracts should not exceed 300 words. Full papers will be circulated between all the panel members one week before the conference.
Panel organizers are welcome to suggest scholarly panels, creative sessions and laboratories, and round table discussions by December 31 st , 2017 at :
[email protected]
Panel organizers are requested to submit a description of the panel, a list of participants with names, affiliations, and titles, and short abstracts of the presentations.
Sessions will last 1.5 hours each. The working language s of the conference are English , Russian, and Chinese . Any exceptions will only be considered in advance and in negotiation with the organizing and academic committees on an individual basis.
Each panel consists of 3 or 4 presentations and a discussion. Proposers should nominate a chair and, preferably, also a discussant. Panel organizers will peer-review the presentations they invite for their panels. However, in case of doubt as to the scholarly quality of the proposal, the academic committee will have the final say. The academic committee reserves the right to attach other presentations to an already formed panel if this fits the subject and the schedule.
Roundtable discussions should have a chair (this can be the organizer), a discussant, and 3 to 5 participants.
Presentations by artists, laboratories, and other sessions in artistic and curatorial research and practice are chosen by the proposers, but they have to meet the requirements of the schedule and take into account the mixed academic, artistic, and other audiences of the conference.
Important dates and deadlines:
Deadline for the submission of panel proposals: December 31 st , 2017
Deadline for the submission of individual papers: Jan 15 th , 2017
Notification concerning accepted papers: January, 2017
Conference dates: September 6 th to 10 th , 2017

Due on 30 June 2017
Transatlantic Literary and Cultural Relations, 1776 to the Present
Guest Editors: Dr Li-hsin Hsu (National Chengchi University, Taiwan) and Dr Andrew Taylor (University of Edinburgh, UK)
This special issue seeks essays of 6,000 to 10,000 words engaged in debate around historical, cultural and literary issues in the Atlantic World. Whilst national narratives have often sought to assert the truth of universal values, a more self-conscious focus upon the methodological framework of the transnational Atlantic world concerns itself explicitly with ways in which diverse and competing local or national paradigms might contest the kinds of ideological assumptions that underwrite narratives of progress, civilisation and modernity. The editors are keen to receive submissions that explore what happens when the assumptions of a nationalistic model of doing literary and cultural criticism, in which geography is allegorised as the autonomous locus of all possible meaning, are challenged by forms of encounter and contagion that disrupt and expand our frames of interpretation. How might the Atlantic space map a series of textual disruptions and contagions during the period? In what ways does transatlanticism open up possibilities for thinking about literary comparison as a critical practice? How do the crossings of people, objects and ideas complicate our sense of literary and intellectual inheritance? What kinds of relationship does the Atlantic world have with other spatial paradigms—the Pacific, the Orient, Australasia? The essays in this special issue seek to explore the meshed networks of interaction—aesthetic, ideological, material—that constitute the space of Atlantic exchange. This, we hope, will result in a wide-ranging, geographically diverse collection that displays much of the best research being undertaken in this exciting and vibrant field.
Possible areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:
* ecology and landscape
* migration and travel
* nature and nation
* Asia/Orientalism and transatlanticism
* social reform
* class and conflict
* gender and sexuality
* art and aesthetics
* slavery and empire
* science and technology
* nationalism and cosmopolitanism
Please follow our submission guidelines to submit articles online by 30 June 2017 : http://www.wreview.org/index.php/submission-guidelines.html
