Call For Proposals: The Soviet Home: Domestic Ideology And Practice
The Inaugural Fisher Forum Workshop at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, June 23-24, 2017
Co-Conveners: Deirdre Ruscitti Harshman (UIUC) and Rebecca Friedman (FIU)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
“Home” is a universal but diffuse category, one that suggests a common sense of belonging and even nostalgia, while simultaneously dependent on individual or group subjectivities. Within Russian and Soviet studies, the concept of home has played a critical role in many fields, including the study of political culture, everyday life, gender and sexualities, work and labor, consumer patterns, and childhood. The concept of the home—and its sometimes adjunct ‘homelessness’—also invokes questions about the meanings of modernity, the categories of public and private life, and of Russian-then-Soviet development vis a vis the image of the West.
This conference will begin to address these questions head on. How did normative understandings of the home–whether as an ideology, a built environment, a set of materialities, or the space of memory–emerge or transform after 1917 and throughout the period of Soviet rule? How were these ideas manifest in practice and theory differently across the empire, both near and abroad?  How have ordinary Russians, or elites such as officials, artists, architects, writers (whether literary or popular), understood the meaning of domestic ideology and practice, the space of the home and emotions of home life? How have planners, architects, and others created familial spaces and how have those who lived in them reacted to them? How have these ideals and realities changed over time?
We welcome contributions from scholars from a multitude of disciplines to engage with us in a pre-circulated paper workshop on topics that might include, but are not limited to:
*  SPACE: How did individuals and collectives imagine the home and how did they create domestic spaces, whether the domestic interiors or the buildings themselves? How did the expectations of domestic space shift across the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural Soviet Union?
*  LABOR & WORK: How was domestic labor understood by the new Soviet regime? How was it gendered? What did domestic labor look like in the Soviet context? What differences existed between domestic work done by residents, and that done by domestic workers ( domashnie rabotnitsy )?
*  MATERIAL & VISUAL CULTURE: Transformations of the home are, at their base, a transformation of material culture. How was the transformation of material culture used to create a form of Soviet domesticity? What role do the related issues of material culture, such as shortages, play in this narrative?
*  REPRESENTATIOS OF THE HOME: Because the home is such a diffuse topic, it can be difficult to trace as an object of study.  How has the Soviet home been imagined and represented throughout the Soviet era?  How do these representations transform across time and space?
*  EMOTION(S): The idea of the “home” has, for many, an intense emotional resonance. How have ideas of the home operated as emotional signifiers? How have they functioned within the Soviet context?
*  GENDER & SEXUALITY: The home became a major site of contention for those interested in the “women’s question.” In what ways were conceptions of gender and the home co-constituted? How did the gendering of the home change over time? How do the gender expectations of elites differ from the experiences of women in their everyday lives?
*  EMPIRE: How did ideas of the home differ across the wide and varied space that was the Soviet Union? Were there attempts to unify the idea of what the home should be?
*  POLITICS & POLITICAL CULTURE: How did narratives of domesticity and the home inform the political landscape in revolutionary Russia (a la Richard Wortman)? Did the state/party serve as an alternative, even imaginary, "home" for some? To what degree were home and home life on the political agenda of politicians, state actors and ordinary citizens?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Information for Applicants

Call for Papers   Concepta Research Seminar
Comparing the Concepts of Representation

SciencesPo, Paris, Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November 2016
Organized by the Civic Constellation II project, Concepta: International Research School in Conceptual History and Political Thought, the CLAIMS project (ANR-DFG) and HiSoPo (AFSP)

Representation is a core concept in modern politics. Since the revolutions of the 17th and 18th century, representation has become the main principle organizing and legitimizing political systems. Social movements themselves are based on representation – of workers, of women, of minorities – as are aesthetics, linguistics or psychology. As a result of this centrality, the concept of representation can be hard to grasp; ubiquitous, its meaning is deeply contentious.
It is ever more so the case as we enlarge the scope of analysis from English to other languages. While in English or in French a single signifier,  representation  or  représentation , can refer to several signified (incarnation, delegation, mental images, pictorial or theatrical reproduction and so on), Italian distinguishes between  rappresentazione  and  rappresentanza , German between  Repräsentation ,  Vertretung , Darstellung  and  Vorstellung , for example. And this is not to mention non-European languages, in which sometimes the Western concept of representation was imported (such as  daibiao  in Chinese).
Facing this plurality and ambiguity of meanings, several strategies are possible: one is exemplified by Hanna Pitkin’s 1967 seminal work,  The Concept of Representation , which delineates a single concept of representation – admittedly offering a range of interpretations – as ‘the making present in some sense of something which is nevertheless not present literally or in fact’. While useful in political philosophy, this approach can lead to historical misconceptions. The purpose of this seminar is more aligned with another classic work, namely, Hasso Hofmann’s 1974  Repräsentation. Studien zur Wort- und Begriffsgeschichte von der Antike bis ins 19. Jahrhundert . Accordingly, we intend to explore the plurality of ways in which the concept of representation is used in the languages of politics.
This Research Seminar will bring together scholars from different disciplines at all stages of their career to provide the first elements for a comparative history of political representation. As such, while the focus of the contributions will not necessarily be strictly linguistic and can include institutions and practices, authors will nonetheless be expected to take into account the discursive dimension of the studied phenomenon and to expose and discuss the meanings of the concept of representation in the context(s) of their study. Even if there is no preferred geographical or temporal setting, we will consider very favourably papers that study political representation in non-European areas.

Keynote lectures  will be delivered by Dr. Rochana Bajpai (SOAS, University of London) and Prof. Yves Sintomer (Paris 8 University, IUF).
Language: English – no attendance fee.
To apply  please send your paper proposal in a Word file, of up to 500 words, before  15  September 2016  to both convenors: Samuel Hayat, CNRS/CERAPS ([email protected]) and  José María  Rosales, University of Málaga ([email protected]).
To prepare the sessions debates,  enlarged abstracts/outlines/papers of up to 1500 words should be sent to both convenors by 28 October 2016.

The German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) cordially invites you to the conference “Contested Memories of the Difficult Past. Eastern Europe and Its History of the 20th Century” which will take place in Kyiv/Ukraine from 30 September to 2 October 2016.
The German Wehrmacht invaded Kyiv on 19 September 1941. Barely two weeks later, on 29 and 30 September 1941, SS and SD units, supported by local militia, massacred 33,771 Jews from Kyiv in the ravine of Babyn Jar on the outskirts of Kyiv. In the following months more than 100,000 people were murdered there, including Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, communists and Ukrainian activists. Babyn Jar is a central place of remembrance of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe and the racially motivated policy of extermination pursued by the National Socialist regime. The bpb, together with the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies and other partners, is organising the conference “Contested Memories of the Difficult Past. Eastern Europe and It! s History of the 20th Century” to mark the 75th anniversary of the Babyn Jar massacre.

The conference addresses questions related to victimisation and responsibility, how art and culture are dealing with competing historical narratives, and the influence of the diaspora on practices of remembrance in post-socialist countries.  It will also discuss how discourses of remembrance and political decisions influence each other at the local and international level, and how transnational remembrance and genocide research can contribute to a critical view of the past in Eastern Europe. The conference also aims to develop adequate strategies for making younger generations more aware of this topic.

The conference, funded by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, is part of the programme “Mapping Memories” of the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (  www.bpb.de/mapping-memories . Kick-off event: “Mapping Memories of Post-1989 Europe”, Vienna, 29 November - 3 December 2015).

The Polish online journal Diametros invites submissions for a special issue on "Enlightenment and Secularism".
Deadline: 1st February 2017.
Further info:
Diametros – An Online Journal of Philosophy invites contributions to a special issue dedicated to the topic ‘Enlightenment and Secularism’. Authors are encouraged to address the question to what extent the Enlightenment critiques and new conceptions of religion, the role of religion in individuals’ moral lives and in the development of communities, as well as its relations to the state and presence in the public sphere, have shaped the modern secular age. Does secularism, understood both as a political regime and as a cultural tendency in contemporary societies, originate in the (predominantly) European Age of Reason, or in other intellectual traditions and historical developments of Europe, or can its roots be (also) traced back to non-European cultures? What are the ways of protecting values like the freedom of conscience, on the one hand, and the freedom of speech, on the other, in contemporary secular regimes (e.g. the Lockean vs. the accommodationist approach)? Do they have a potential to avert or to fuel worldwide conflicts motivated by religious creeds and commitments? Articles related to these and similar topics should be submitted through the online platform of the journal no later than by the 1st of February 2017. All papers will receive a double-blind peer review.

Call for Submissions: Yearbook of Transnational History

The Yearbook of Transnational History is inviting scholars to submit articles for its inaugural volume to be published in spring 2018.

The Yearbook of Transnational History is a newly established peer-reviewed annual to be published by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press/Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group. This annual is dedicated to publishing and disseminating pioneering research in the field of transnational history to an international audience.

Undertaking transnational history means breaking free from national paradigms. The concept of transnational history is built upon the premise that historical processes, their causes, and their consequences are not contained within nations. The transnational approach attempts to recover history as a global experience and as a universal project. It is based on the realization that humans have always lived in an interconnected world. Instead of researching and writing the history of particular phenomena within the confines of any given nation state, the paradigm of transnational history encourages historians to follow trends, events, and people in all directions that they went. Transnational history is, thus, focused on the circulation of notions, images, things, living beings, capital, and practices across various cultures and societies around the globe and the creation/disruption of relations and spaces that shape the perception and reality of individuals.

The Yearbook of Transnational History will be open to contributions that fit this agenda. Articles considered for inclusion will follow human and non-human historical protagonists in various geographic settings and recreate the transnational configurations that have been obscured by the national history paradigm.

We welcome articles from both professionals and advanced PhD students that are based upon original research on a broad range in both spatial and topical terms from the modern era (i.e. eighteenth to the twentieth century). Articles should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words long (including footnotes) and follow Chicago Style.

Submissions should be emailed to the editor, Professor Thomas Adam,  [email protected]  by November 1, 2016 to be considered for inclusion in the first volume. Please ensure that you have included all relevant contact information on a separate page, including your name, your professional or institutional affiliation, and a permanent e-mail address.
