The Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities "Law as Culture" ( www.recht-als-kultur.de ) invites academics of excellent standing to apply for a fellowship or junior fellowship, with a maximum term of 12 months, on the research topic:
Law and politics
While the first research period of the Center (2010-2016) approached the topic of law as a cultural phenomenon in a systematic and comparative way, in the second phase of research the relation of law to other cultural spheres of modernity will be put on the agenda. Large parts of classical social theory consider the principle of functional differentiation the hallmark of modern societies. In contrast, a non-functionalist analysis of social differentiation, based on the comparison of cultures, becomes vital in order to illuminate the variable relation of social spheres and fields of action in different contexts. This aim of observing the complex of law and politics demands in-depth studies on regionally specific constellations, e.g. by way of a cultural sociology of the state. Moreover, general analyses of the effects of transnational and global constitutionalism on the one hand and the denial of rights and the powerlessness of law on the other must be taken into account as well. All submitted research proposals should follow one of the three transversal schemes of the Center, namely, first, "cultures of differentiation" along with the program‘s overall basis in a comparative approach towards various legal cultures, second, "human rights and autonomy" and, third, "emotive foundations of the law and the binding force of law".

Call for Applicants: Cromwell Research Fellowships in American Legal History

**Call to early-career scholars to apply for a Cromwell research grant; Note that the deadline is July 11, 2016
In 2016, the William Nelson Cromwell Foundation will make available a number of $5,000 fellowship awards to support research and writing in American legal history by early-career scholars. Early career generally includes those researching or writing a PhD dissertation (or equivalent project) and recent recipients of a graduate degree working on their first major monograph or research project. The number of awards made is at the discretion of the Foundation. In the past several years, the trustees of the Foundation have made five to nine awards. The Committee for Research Fellowships and Awards of the American Society for Legal History (ASLH) reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the Foundation. (The Cromwell Foundation was established in 1930 to promote and encourage scholarship in legal history, particularly in the colonial and early national periods of the United States. The Foundation has supported the publication of legal records as well as historical monographs. Scholars who are not at the early stages of their careers may seek research grants directly from the Foundation.  For more information, see the Grants page at cromwellfoundation.org.)
 
Application Process for 2016
Applicants should submit a description of their proposed project (double-spaced, maximum 6 pages including notes; include a working title), a budget, a timeline, and a short c.v. (no longer than 3 pages). The budget and timeline can be part of the Project Description or separate. (There is no application form.) Two letters of recommendation from academic referees should be sent directly to the Committee Chair via email attachment, preferably as pdf files. Call for Applications
Fellowships 2017-18
Located in the Botanic Garden in Uppsala, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (scas) is a national institute for advanced study.The collections of Carolina Rediviva Library and other scientific facilities at Uppsala University are situated nearby.

For the academic year 2017-18 the Collegium offers residential fellowships for senior scholars. The fellowships afford scholars the opportunity to concentrate on their own research interests. Fellows are expected to be in residence and to participate in academic events beyond their own fields of specialization.The application may be for the entire academic year or alternatively for one academic semester.

Candidates may come from any discipline within the humanities and social sciences. At the time of application, the candidates must have held a PhD for at least ten years and have a track record of significant and original research achievements.

The holder of the fellowship receives a monthly stipend or salary. Accommodation for Fellows who do not live in the Stockholm-Uppsala region is arranged by the Collegium and all Fellows have their own fully equipped office at the Collegium.

The application deadline is August 1, 2016.

 Languages of Internationalism

Conference to take place at Birkbeck College, University of London

25-26 May 2017

Scholars have in recent years re-energized the study of how peoples, cultures, and economies came, over time, to be linked and entangled across all manner of borders. Transnationalism and internationalism continue to be the watchwords of much humanities and social sciences scholarship. Yet insufficient attention has been paid to the crucial politics of language in historical scenarios of internationalism as a lived or imagined human enterprise. Organised by the Reluctant Internationalists research group at Birkbeck College London in collaboration with Brigid O’Keeffe from Brooklyn College, CUNY, this conference will bring together historians, anthropologists, literary scholars, linguists, and scholars in related fields, to debate the languages of internationalism.

The goal of the conference is to shed light on the centrality of language to people’s past pursuit and experience of internationalism. Historians must better understand the linguistic realities that their subjects confronted in their various global networks and endeavors. For any agents of internationalism, language presented a wide variety of challenges and opportunities. It imposed obstacles and provided avenues to mutual understanding and collaboration among diverse peoples. The relative successes and failures of past internationalist projects in large measure owed to participants’ ability to effectively communicate across not just linguistic, but also political, cultural, economic, and professional boundaries. This fundamental and literal question of (mis)communication has dramatically shaped the lives of peoples variously confronting the global realities or pretensions of their milieus.

Conference participants will consider the frustrations and triumphs of human beings, in a wide variety of historical contexts, as they deployed language in their efforts to communicate across borders. In this way, the conference seeks better historical appreciation and understanding of language as a linchpin of transnational and international histories.

Submissions of individual papers on the following themes and topics are especially encouraged:

Languages of Internationalism: When and why have languages helped or hindered internationalist projects? Roles played by lingua francas; bi-lingualism and multi-lingualism in border areas, cities, schools, refugee or POW camps; sign languages and deaf histories in global perspective; artificial languages as international auxiliary languages
Language in Global Diplomacy and Cross-Cultural Exchange: Language politics by and within international organizations, including the League of Nations, United Nations, and others; (mis-)communication and international diplomacy; roles of interpreters and interpreting; connections between language and diplomatic failure; the role of language in educational, scholarly or artistic exchange programs
(Mis-)Communicating Expertise in Science, Medicine, and Scholarship more generally: languages of technocracy; experts’ views on and uses of language and strategies of communication; international scholarly communities and the transmission of knowledge; differences between different fields of expertise; experts’ changing conceptions of ‘the public’ and how it can be reached
Language Politics During and After Empire: Communication and questions of (linguistic) authority in colonial contexts; language and interpersonal relationships within and across empires; language and colonial diplomacy; language and postcolonial critique
Linguistic Rights and Endangered Languages: Linguistic Rights; standardization and imposition of official or national languages; endangered languages and globalization
Mass Media, Language, and Idea Transmission on the Global Stage: Communication and linking technologies such as the post, telegraph, radio, tv, and internet; language and global marketing; international publishing and translation projects

There will be no conference fee. There will be limited funding available to contribute to the accommodation in London of junior scholars and those from institutions without research funds.

Национализм в последние десятилетия становится все более и более актуальной проблемой на международной повестке дня. Возникнув в последней трети XVIII века как радикальное ответвление европейских концепций национального освобождения, он сравнительно быстро развился в сеть разнородных идеологий, распространенных по всему миру. Общим основанием для них стало доминирование концепта (единой) нации в политике, социальных отношениях и интеллектуальной сфере общества. Сам концепт часто бывает не отрефлексирован, отчего значения термина «нация» множатся, пересекаются с другими понятиями и категориями политического поля, начинают противоречить друг другу; подчас приходится прилагать немало усилий, чтобы понять, в каком именно значении употребляет слова «нация» и «национальное» тот или иной политик или общественный деятель. При этом различные современные направления национализма стараются не терять генетической связи с идеями национального возрождения, восходящими к прошлым векам, и это еще больше затрудняет критическую рефлексию над ними в тех обществах, где они обретают популярность.
 
Редакция интернет-журнала «Гефтер», Центр франко-российских исследований и Фонд Егора Гайдара предлагают обсудить то, как формируются и функционируют национальные и националистические идентичности – причем на уровне официально проповедуемых доктрин националистического толка, но и, главное, на уровне повседневных практик. Одновременно мы хотели бы провести терминологическое разграничение между терминами «нация» и «национализм», с одной стороны, и между ними обоими и рядом смежных с ними (таких, как «национальность», «этничность», «гражданство» и др.), с другой.
 
Мы предлагаем участникам конференции обсудить следующие проблемы, связанные с национальными и националистическими идентичностями в позднем СССР и на постсоветском пространстве:
 
– Преемственность и разрыв: насколько современные варианты национализма наследуют позднесоветским?
– Константы национального как способ контролировать политическую лояльность.
– Институциональные формы национализма: как формулируется «русскость» («украинскость», «белорусскость», «эстонскость» и т.д.) за пределами России (Украины, Белоруссии, Эстонии…)?
– Национализм и неоколониализм: экспансия русскости и риторика «спасения» – от «спасения русского мира» до спасения как эсхатологической категории.
– Память при национализме: какие практики памяти в рамках националистических доктрин существовали в СССР и как они трансформировались на постсоветском пространстве?
– Национализм и диссидентство в СССР – национализм и политическая оппозиция в постсоветскую эпоху.
– Национализм и национальная травма: может ли разговор о национализме быть способом изживания коллективной травмы, и если да, то почему в России и ряде других стран Восточной Европы он купируется?
– Этика национализма: какие этические принципы кладут идеологи национализма в основание проповедуемых ими доктрин? Какие моральные категории формируются в рамках националистических теорий?
– Национализм как инфоповод: практики медиаресурсов, определяющих себя как националистические.
– Национализм и демократия: почему в эпоху перестройки демократия часто рассматривалась как национальная миссия и что стало с этими представлениями в дальнейшем?
– Альтернативные политические программы: как политические мыслители времени перестройки (такие, как А.Д. Сахаров, Е.Т. Гайдар и др.) относились к риторике нациестроительства и что готовы были ей противопоставить?
– Национализм и экономика в постсоветских странах.
 
Конференция продлится три дня и будет носить комбинированный характер: на пленарных заседаниях и в утренних сессиях состоятся научные доклады, время после обеда будут занимать практические мероприятия – круглые столы и воркшопы. На этих практических мероприятиях будут разбираться отдельные кейсы (или связанные группы кейсов), и на этом материале будут отрабатываться концепции анализа национализма и гражданского общества. Подавать заявки можно на любую из двух форм участия в конференции – как на выступление с докладом (индивидуальное или в соавторстве), так и на организацию воркшопа или круглого стола (панель).
 
По итогам конференции подборка избранных выступления и панелей будет издана в виде коллективной монографии. Оргкомитет оставляет за собой право отбора материалов.

ТЕМА КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ
В 2017 г. будет отмечаться 500-летие Реформации. Целью реформаторов было возвращение христианства к первоначальной евангельской вести, однако в средневековом обществе религия была тесно связана с политикой, экономикой и культурой, поэтому протестантская Реформация XVI в. оказала глубокое влияние не только на западное христианство, но и на западное общество в целом. Она инициировала радикальные перемены в сознании западного человека, вызвав к жизни идеи, которые впоследствии распространились далеко за пределы Европы и в значительной степени определили идеалы и ценности современного мира.Восточная (православная) церковь, в отличие от западной, не имела в своей истории чего-либо сходного с Реформацией. Тем не менее западная Реформация и последовавшая за ней модернизация оказали значительное влияние на Россию и другие православные страны. Так, реформы Петра I, повлекшие радикальные перемены в российском обществе, во многом опирались на западные модели, сформировавшиеся в ходе Реформации. В этом отношении Россия также испытала на себе последствия тех событий, что начались пятьсот лет назад.
 
В более широком смысле реформацию можно рассматривать как продолжающийся уже пять столетий процесс в европейском сознании, который затрагивает все его элементы – не только религию – и вызывает глубокие изменения, выражающиеся в переходе от традиционных форм общественной жизни к формам эпохи модерна (и, далее, постмодерна). Именно так понимает реформацию известный канадский философ Чарльз Тейлор в своей недавней книге «Секулярный век» (2007 г.; русский перевод выходит в издательстве ББИ в этом году), анализируя развитие западного общества в последние пять веков. Как понимаемая таким образом реформация проявляется в сегодняшнем обществе? Возможно ли проследить связь между теми радикальными переменами, которые происходят вокруг нас сегодня, и процессами, которые начались в Европе пятьсот лет назад? Каковы особенности российской ситуации? Можно ли рассматривать как своего рода реформацию те сдвиги, которые произошли в российском обществе за последние сто лет? Какова роль религии в этом? Является ли церковь в России лишь объектом происходящих в обществе изменений, или же она выступает одной из действующих сил, внося свой активный вклад в процесс перемен? Цель предстоящей конференции – обсудить эти и подобные им вопросы, а также сравнить процесс реформации (в широком смысле) на Западе и в России.
 
 
ДОКЛАДЫ И ПУБЛИКАЦИЯ
 
Желающие сделать доклад должны до 1 октября 2016 г. прислать в ББИ содержательные тезисы (объемом не более 500 слов) в электронном виде. Оргкомитет конференции проводит рассмотрение и отбор тезисов и рассылает приглашения предполагаемым докладчикам. Полные тексты отобранных докладов должны быть представлены до 1 декабря 2016 г. Помимо докладчиков, предусмотрено участие слушателей.  Рабочие языки конференции – русский и английский. 
Доклады рассчитаны на 20 минут. Некоторые из докладов будут напечатаны в журнале «Страницы: богословие, культура, образование». Тезисы и полные тексты докладов следует направлять ученому секретарю конференции по следующему адресу:

Конкурсная программа – это часть программы III Международного педагогического форума Русского мира (далее – «Форум»), в рамках которой участники представляют на конкурс свои оригинальные творческие и научные проекты, связанные с инновационной деятельностью в области преподавания русского языка и литературы, с целью выявления лучших проектов в соответствии с заявленными номинациями.
Организатором и учредителем Конкурса является фонд «Русский мир».
К участию в Конкурсе приглашаются  российские и зарубежные преподаватели русского языка и литературы, а также иные участники Форума – авторы творческих и научно-исследовательских проектов.
Конкурс проводится по следующим номинациям:
·                      Русский язык в национальной школе.
·                      Русская школа за рубежом и современная российская школа.
·                      Развитие чтения на русском языке.
·                      Преподавание дисциплин современной русистики в вузах.
·                      Зарубежная русистика.
·                      Инновационные методы и технологии преподавания русского языка и литературы в дистанционном формате.
Конкурсная программа III Международного педагогического форума Русского мира проводится с целью выявления и популяризации инновационных подходов и методик в области преподавания русского языка и литературы.
Задачи конкурсной программы III Международного педагогического форума Русского мира:
·                      выявление и поддержка лучших инновационных российских и зарубежных проектов, связанных с русистикой;
·                      обобщение научно-методического опыта российских и зарубежных специалистов в области русского языка и литературы;
·                      популяризация достижений и инновационных моделей преподавания в области русистики;
·                      содействие процессу расширения взаимодействия между российскими и зарубежными специалистами по школьной и вузовской русистике.
Порядок и сроки представления конкурсных работ
·                      Конкурсная программа проводится в два этапа: первый (заочный) и второй (очный) туры.
·                      На конкурс могут быть представлены только оригинальные проекты авторов.
·                      Авторские права на представленные материалы должны принадлежать участникам конкурса.
·                      Все конкурсные материалы предоставляются на русском языке в электронном виде.
Заявки на первый (заочный) тур будут приниматься  с 15 мая по 15 июля 2016 года в электронном виде .
Проекты, одобренные экспертным советом, переходят во второй тур Конкурса.
Второй (очный) тур Конкурсной программы состоится 27 ноября 2016 года в городе Сочи в рамках Форума. Ведущие Конкурсной программы назначаются Программным руководителем Форума из числа участников Форума.
Оценка проектов, представленных на второй (очный) тур Конкурсной программы, производится общим открытым голосованием участников Форума. По результатам голосования по каждой номинации составляются шорт-листы со списками финалистов (по два на каждую номинацию), которые направляются на рассмотрение жюри.
Жюри конкурса рассматривает проекты финалистов и принимает решение по определению победителей каждой отдельной номинации Конкурсной программы.
Объявление результатов конкурса и вручение дипломов победителям производится во время торжественной церемонии закрытия Форума 27 ноября 2016 года.

The award of $500 is named for Mary Zirin, the founder of Women East-West. Working as an independent scholar, Zirin produced and encouraged fundamental works in Slavic/East European Women's Studies and has been instrumental in the development of the AWSS. The Prize aims to recognize the achievements of independent scholars and to encourage their continued scholarship and service in the fields of Slavic or Central and Eastern European Women's Studies. The Committee encourages the nomination of candidates at all career stages. For the purpose of this award, an independent scholar is defined as a scholar who is not employed at an institution of higher learning, or an employee of a university or college who is not eligible to compete for institutional support for research (for example, those teaching under short-term contracts or working in administrative posts). >>В случае, если проект выполняется коллективом ученых, состоящим из трех и более человек, общий размер ежегодного вознаграждения руководителя проекта не должен превышать 50% от суммы ежегодного вознаграждения всех исполнителей проекта, указанных в форме «Т», включая руководителя проекта. Вознаграждение за реализацию проекта должен получить каждый исполнитель проекта, указанный в форме «Т».
>>Для реализации проектов проведения научных исследований допускаются поездки исполнителей научного проекта (включая руководителя) по теме проекта в архивы, библиотеки и проведения полевых исследований, а также для выступления с докладами по теме проводимых исследований (в соответствии со сроками проведения мероприятия). >>>– оплата редакционно-издательских услуг, включая подготовку и печатание материалов конференции, тезисов докладов, программы и информационных писем, билетов;

>>Срок реализации проекта – 1 календарный год для проектов типа «д» и 2 календарных года для проектов типа «д1».
>>Руководителями проектов по изданию научных трудов могут являться только авторы (или их правопреемники) либо ответственные редакторы коллективных научных трудов, обладающие соответствующими авторскими правами.
*  «д2» – проекты перевода и издания на иностранных языках научных трудов.
>>Фонд поддерживает проекты перевода и издания на иностранных языках научных трудов по направлениям классификатора РГНФ.
>>Срок реализации проекта («д2») – 2 календарных года.

A tenure-track assistant professorship is a six-year, fixed-term academic position involving both research and teaching. The successful candidate will be obliged to complete a teacher-training course designed especially for assistant professors.
 
Approximately six months before the end of the six-year period as assistant professor, a committee set up by the Dean will assess whether the assistant professor can be considered for promotion to a tenured position as associate professor.

Qualification requirements
Applicants must have a PhD degree or its equivalent within the area advertised. Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can demonstrate teaching experience at university level.

Tenure-track assistant professors must hold an academic record demonstrating internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized potential to make a future impact.

Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be taken into account. Applicants’ outreach qualifications, including the ability to attract external funding, will also be considered.

Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.
Only material in English, German, French, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and (a lesser proportion of material in) Russian will be assessed.
All material will be shredded at the end of the appointment procedure.
Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Dean selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Job description
The professorship is intended for an artist who would excel as a Professor of Contemporary Art within the particular context of Aalto University and the Department of Art.
