CENTER FOR THE UNITED STATES AND COLD WAR FELLOWSHIPS AND TRAVEL GRANTS 2016-2017

Michael Koncewicz's picture Announcement published by Michael Koncewicz on Monday, January 18, 2016
March 31, 2016

American History / Studies, Diplomacy and International Relations, African American History / Studies, Graduate Studies
New York University's Tamiment Library announces the Center for the United States and the Cold War fellowships and travel grants for 2016-2017. The Center for the United States and the Cold War at NYU's Tamiment Library supports research on the Cold War, especially on the ways in which this ideological and geopolitical conflict with the Soviet Union affected American politics, culture, and society. We will be offering a dissertation fellowship, a post-doctoral fellowship and at least three travel grants.

The fellowship program honors the late Agnese Nelms Haury, of Tucson, Arizona, whose insightful generosity created and sustains the Center for the United States and the Cold War, whose purposes she believed in passionately. The program will select one Agnese N. Haury Post-Doctoral Scholar and one Agnese N. Haury Dissertation Scholar. The post-doctoral fellowship is designed for junior scholars who will have received the Ph.D. by August 31, 2016. The stipend for the one-year post-doctoral fellow is $64,000.

Applicants for the dissertation fellowship must have passed their comprehensive examinations and expect to complete their dissertations within two years. The dissertation fellow will receive a stipend of $30,000 for a nine-month academic year.

The Center's Agnese N. Haury travel grants range from $500 to $3,000, depending on need, to support research in the holdings of the Tamiment Library. Research trips may last any length of time, however only scholars outside the New York metropolitan area will be considered. This year there will be at least three travel grants.

The post-doctoral, dissertation, and travel grant recipients are selected on the basis of the applicant's scholarly qualifications and the scholarly significance of the project to the Center's mission to support research on the Cold War. Preference will be given to those projects that rely heavily on Tamiment's collections on the Left, the labor movement, or the Alger Hiss case.

All fellowship applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a short project description (5 pages maximum), three letters of recommendation from professional references and a short statement describing the relevance of the collections of the Tamiment Library to the project. Applicants for the travel grants should send a curriculum vitae, a short project description (3 pages maximum), one letter of professional reference, a travel budget and a short statement regarding the relevance of the collections of the Tamiment Library to the project.

Please submit all materials by March 31, 2016 to Timothy V Johnson, Tamiment Library Director and co-director, Center for the United States and the Cold War at [email protected]. When submitting a dissertation or post-doctoral fellowship application, please use the following format in the subject line: Cold War Center Fellowship Application LAST NAME. For travel grants, please use the subject line Cold War Center Travel Application LAST NAME.

Storytelling: Global Reflections on Narrative
9th Global Meeting

Call for Participation 2016

Sunday 10th July – Tuesday 12th July 2016
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom

Earlier meetings of the Storytelling: global reflections on narrative project have brought together participants with both personal and professional interests in the unique role that storytelling plays throughout our lives. We have been challenged by philosophers, literary theorists, artists, psychologists, playwrights, storytellers, film makers, historians, teachers, psychotherapists, nurses and many others, into reflecting on the place that story plays in our lives and the ways in which we consciously and unconsciously employ it. We have also been engaged, entertained and challenged by traditional storytellers from Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, the Philippines, India and elsewhere as well as by theatrical and musical performances, digital stories, films and performance art.

For our ninth global meeting we invite participants to continue to reflect on and celebrate story in challenging ways.

Human life is conducted through story, because the telling of stories comes naturally to us. Almost every time we speak we engage in storytelling, and sharing stories is arguably the most important way we have of communicating with others about who we are and what we believe; about what we are doing and have done; about our hopes and fears; about what we value and what we don’t. We make sense of our lives by telling stories about them; and we learn about other people by listening to the stories they tell. Sometimes, under the influence of the culture in which we are immersed, we live our lives in ways that try to create the stories we want to be able to tell about them.

The importance of the stories we tell and the stories we hear is recognized in every culture. The work of many professions, including medicine, nursing, teaching, the law, psychotherapy and counselling, involves a great deal of time listening to and communicating through stories. Story is a powerful tool for teachers, because by telling stories they can help students to integrate what they are learning with what they already know, by placing what they learn in a context that makes it easy to recall. Story also plays an important role in academic disciplines like philosophy, theology, anthropology, archaeology and history as well as literature Narrative methods for the collection of data are increasingly used in research in the social sciences and humanities, where the value of getting to know people in a more intimate and less distant way – almost as if we are getting to know them from the inside, is increasingly valued, and academics in many disciplines have begun to realise the value of storytelling as a model for academic writing.

Abstracts are invited for contributions that address any aspect of story or narrative, including, for example:

- Story as a pedagogical and research tool in academic disciplines such as history; anthropology, psychology, theology, cultural theory, medicine, law, philosophy, education, archaeology; the physical sciences and archaeology.

- Narrative and the gathering of stories of lived experience, as a research approach in any area of professional and public life, including academic disciplines such as those listed above.

- The place of story and storytelling in the practice of journalism; conflict resolution; architecture; religion; tourism, politics and the law, and in clinical contexts such as medicine, psychotherapy, nursing and counselling; personal relations and advertising..

- Story’s place in culture, including theatre; cinema; music, including opera, folk music and popular music; literature, including poetry, short stories and graphic novels.

- The place of storytelling in the digital age, including digital storytelling; forms of storytelling in social media; and computer gaming.

We especially welcome abstracts from those who bring together reflections from both professional and personal perspectives. Abstracts that address the interdisciplinary potential of storytelling, both as an approach to a wide range of topics and as a means for communication between colleagues from different academic disciplines and professions, are also warmly welcomed.

Further details and information can be found on the conference website:
http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/probing-the-boundaries/storytelling-global-reflections-on-narrative/research-streams/storytelling-global-reflections-on-narrative/story-2-call-for-papers/

We welcome submissions which cross the divide between both project areas. If you would like to be considered for a cross project session, please mark your submission “Crossover Submission”.

What to Send

A Joint Miami University Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies and Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science Conference

STATEHOOD AND ITS DISCONTENTS:
RUSSIA, EASTERN EUROPE AND EURASIA

June 15-17, 2016
Vilnius, Lithuania

Organizing Committee:  Karen Dawisha (Miami University),  Inga Vinogradnaitė (Vilnius University, IIRPS),  Neringa Klumbyt ė (Miami University), Vilius Mačkinis (Vilnius University, IIRPS).

In the post-Cold War era territorial borders have been continuously contested during the wars in Chechnya, the Caucasus, and more recently Ukraine. The conflict in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine has brought the questions of statehood and sovereignty again to the forefront of popular, political, and scholarly debates. There have also been internal challenges to how statehood and sovereignty are envisioned fuelled by migration, ethnic and religious disputes, and nationalism.

This conference explores historical and contemporary challenges to statehood and emergence of alternative sovereignty and governance regimes. We extend the definition of  “sovereignty” to “actualities of relations within ways of life” (Caroline Humphrey 2008), alternative forms of authority and legitimacy beyond the ones sanctioned by the state and international institutions. The potential topics include, but are not limited to: hybrid warfare, financial sovereignty, radical politics, nationalism, supranationalism, terrorism, secessionism, migration and displacement, borders and borderlands, memory and identity.

We especially welcome submissions from scholars early in their careers, who have done extensive research in the region of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

Keynote speakers: Karen Dawisha (Miami University), Ramūnas Vilpišauskas (Vilnius University) and Artemyi Troitsky.
Deadline for paper proposal submissions is  February 1. st
Please send a 250 word abstract and one page CV to Neringa Klumbyt ė   [email protected]  AND Inga Vinogradnaitė   [email protected]  with the subject line STATEHOOD CONFERENCE ABSTRACT 2016.

The applicants will be notified about acceptance to the conference by March 1 st .
Deadline for submission of full papers to be posted on the Havighurst website (password protected) is May 25. th

There is no conference fee. The language of the conference is English. A Hundred Years of  Ostranenie :  an International Conference

University of Erfurt, December 15-17 2016

Organizers: Alexandra Berlina and Holt Meyer, University of Erfurt

A century ago, in 1916, a young student named Viktor Shklovsky self-published his precocious essay-cum-manifesto “Art as Device”. In it, he coined a term which became crucial in literary studies, and important in the study of cinema and visual art:  ostranenie . Also known as “defamiliarization”, “estrangement”, “enstrangement”, “making strange” and “foregrounding” in English, and – causing confusion with Brecht’s concept – as “Verfremdung” in German,  ostranenie  is about rendering the usual extraordinary and thus making the reader (or viewer) perceive it anew. Or is it? The way Shklovsky uses the term in “Art as Device” is ambiguous enough; if we also consider his later and lesser-known works as well as the scholarly legacy of  ostranenie , we arrive at an array of meanings worthy of a fundamental investigation, thus our suggestion to make this subject the topic of a
conference.
A hundred years of  ostranenie  has not been a hundred years of solitude for the concept. It has been commented on and developed in countless ways, in monographs and in whole special issues of scholarly periodicals. Tracing these paths is tracing the history of modern literary theory itself. The OPOYAZ – the Society for the Study of Poetic Language, which formed in Petrograd around Shklovsky – also celebrates its centennial in 2016. The work of its members influenced structuralism, but tracing a straight line from Russian formalism to structuralism is a misleading simplification.
Reader-response criticism and cognitive poetics arguably owe as much to formalism as does structuralism. As regards literary heritage, some writers – such as Yuri Olesha and Bertolt Brecht – were directly influenced by the concept of  ostranenie , and many others exhibit a wealth of  ostranenie  in their work which remains to be discussed. The conference is international and interdisciplinary; scholars beyond Slavic and literary departments are expressly invited.  Ostranenie  features in diverse literatures, and in other cultural products than literary fiction – comic strips, films, paintings… The heritage of  ostranenie  in art and scholarship, as well as its fate in Shklovsky’s later works (especially his ‘recanting’), is the conference’s key focus.
The subfields may include, but are not restricted to: translating the terminology of  ostranenie; ostranenie  in world literature; forms and functions of  ostranenie; ostranenie , cognition and emotion;  ostranenie, Russianness and the East;  ostranenie , rhetoric and irony;  ostranenie,  diversion and   entertainment ; ostranenie  and deconstruction;  ostranenie  and Romanticism;  ostranenie,  war, and   terror; literary sources of ostranenie  discussed by Shklovsky (Sterne, Tolstoy etc.); the media of   o stranenie  (visual arts, film, music and mediality in general).
Keynote speaker will be the noted scholar of Russian Formalism Aage A. Hansen-Löve.
Abstracts of 150-300 words, accompanied by a brief bio (incl. affiliation), are welcome at
[email protected]  until February 1st 2016.

Patriotic (Non) Consumption: Food, Fashion and Media
Special issues of  Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media  (digitalicons.org)
Guest-edited by Olga Gurova (University of Helsinki), Ekaterina Kalinina (Södertörn University), Jessie Labov (Ohio State University), Vlad Strukov (University of Leeds)
The economic crises of 2008-present and the recent political confrontations have shaped patterns of patriotic consumption and non-consumption (a refusal to consume particular types of products, symbols and discourses) in the countries of the Central, Eastern and Southern Europe as well as Central Asia, Caucasus and Russia, signaling their participation in the global economy as consumer societies.
We argue that these countries are consumer societies similar to the western or any other consumer societies, while possessing differences specific to this particular geographical region. These differences could be explained by historical, socio-cultural and political reasons, which often define the frames of patriotic (non) consumption. For example, the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the western countries, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, led to anti-western sanctions imposed by Russia, which resulted in ‘patriotic’ refusal to consume some western products. These especially have affected producers of food, fashion and media in the region.  For instance, Ukraine recently applied embargo to a wide range of Russian products as a response to Russia’s ban on Ukrainian imports, while some Baltic states have banned Russian television channels. In addition,  "buy local” campaigns are typically motivated by concerns for the ecology or small business in many countries, but in Hungary and Slovakia they have developed a distinctly patriotic – and even sometimes nationalist – flavour.  These are just some examples of patriotic (non) consumption and changes in consumption patterns. Hence we invite authors to contribute with empirical studies of similar processes in the countries of the region, focusing on the relationship between (non) consumption and media / digital cultures.
Additionally, we wish to examine the role of (non) consumption and patriotism / nationalism in a historical context. The relationship between consumption and ethnicity / nationalism has produced a steady stream of scholarship starting from the 1980s to the present. More recently, there has been a surge of scholarly interest in consumerism during the socialist era and how it has affected post-socialist consumption. Now we would like to explore how all of these factors have led to changes in consumption in this region during the era of social media.
We also want to study patriotic (non) consumption from a theoretical viewpoint.  How can we conceptualise patriotic (non) consumption? How does non-consumption link with negative self-identification? How do Russians account for their anti-western stance and their own conspicuous consumption? Is non-consumption a new form of media rhetoric and cultural denominator that has supplanted the era of glamour? How do governments, media companies and users in the region imbue neo-liberal systems of consumption with their own nationalist agenda?
We are particularly interested in media discourses about consumption and patriotism and in how media influence patriotic (non) consumption in the region. What has been the role of media, especially digital social media, in constructing a sense of belonging and patriotism through the discourse of (non) consumption? How has digital culture impacted our understanding of (non) consumption? How do users navigate between the media rhetoric of patriotic boycotting and patriotic ‘buy-cotting’? How does patriotic consumer capitalism work in the era of accelerated globalisation and mediatisation of culture? These are some of the questions we wish to explore in our special issue.
We invite a range of submissions: 1) research articles (7-9,000 words, external peer reviews); 2) essays (4-5,000 words, internal peer reviews); 3) digital memoirs (see the journal site for more information); 4) interviews; and 5) image and video galleries documenting the developments and exploring the topic using audio-visual media.
We will consider submissions in English and Russian (for contributions in other languages please contact the guest editors for an initial consultation).
Publication timeline:
1 March 2016 – submit an extended abstract / description of your submission (300-500 words in English); abstracts of research articles should include an outline of the contribution, methodological and theoretical underpinnings and some preliminary information on the findings
15  March 2016 - notification of acceptance
