Research Fellowships – Smart Loire Valley General Programme
(Open to experimented international researchers*)
Research Field: European Patrimony
CONTEXT
The Center for Superior Studies of the Renaissance (CESR) is the Education and Research Unit (UFR) University François-Rabelais of Tours and Mixed Research Unit (UMR) 7323 affiliated with the CNRS. In 1996 the CESR re-affirmed its commitment to interdisciplinary research into key themes of European patrimony (including musicology, art history and the history of the book), in an accord with the French Ministry of Culture, the CNRS and University François-Rabelais of Tours.
The CESR is an education and research centre, which welcomes students and researchers wishing to acquire an initial or additional university education in all domains of the Renaissance. The CESR enjoys a double status, being at once a UFR (Education and Research Unit) within the University François-Rabelais of Tours and a UMR (Mixed Research Unit 7323) affiliated with the CNRS (National Research Institute). The CESR’s research programmes are structured according to disciplinary teams (history, history of art, French, neo-Latin and European literature, philosophy, musicology, history of science and techniques), research fields and team projects.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH
This research project is the responsibility of Professor Chiara Lastraioli, Director of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Val de Loire – USR 3501. It focuses on the literature produced within the Italian community that immigrated to Geneva because of their religious convictions, extending from the 1540s to the beginning of the 17 th century, when Geneva was governed by Jean Calvin and, later, by the administrative bodies emanating from his authority.
The objective of the project is a comprehensive study of the texts published in Italian in the dominated by censorship Calvinist Geneva during the second half of the 16th century (and the early years of the 17th). One of the primary intentions of this study is to take an inventory of the text published; then, to evaluate the stylistic, rhetorical and linguistic impact of Calvinist thought and theology in these texts. It is proposed to include an analysis that also takes into account the political and social contexts in which these texts were designed and realised: the censorship put in place by Calvin (and by the administrative organisms emanating from his authority), the market and the dissemination of Italian books in a Reformation context.
MISSION OF THE RESEARCH SCIENTIST
The goal of the research fellow will be to coordinate the project, collaborate with laboratory researchers and colleagues based in Geneva and Toronto in the following three research axes:
* Studying, from an eminently cultural point of view, the Italian community living in Geneva in the second half of the sixteenth Century, their religious practices and the texts produced in connection with the local printing industry.
* Investigating the relationship between the different type of Protestantism promoted by Italian refugees, Calvinist censorship, and the effort aimed at developing a common Italian language, which moved away from the Tusco-Florentine canon.
* Analysing the literary efforts realised in the Genevan territory in comparison with the primary Italian models in order to provide a stylistic study.
PROFILE OF THE RESEARCH FELLOW
The candidate must show a deep experience in Romance Studies (Italian and French studies), as well as a research experience in the field of the relationship between Italian Language and Literature, History of the Book and Religion in Early Modern Europe. The candidate must have a firm knowledge of the Renaissance religious literature and propaganda. The candidate will be expected to participate in meetings of research groups and seminars organised by LE STUDIUM and the Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance, and to promote a workshop on the topics of this project. Publications on the topics of research are expected.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Senior researcher profile with:
* Publications and significant international networks;
* Track records of previous research in similar topics that has shown the ability to mobilize the literature and to build a testable hypothesis;
* Research experience in the field of study, able to innovate and interact with diverse stakeholders;
* Motivation for team work and ability to establish fruitful scientific exchange with researchers and actors of different technical and scientific cultures;
* The scientific working languages are French, Italian and English.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position is intended to attract experienced international researchers with preferably at least 10 years of experience. They will seek to build international collaboration through a long stay experience in a laboratory in the Centre-Val de Loire region, France.
(*) To be eligible, applicant researchers must be national or long-term resident of a country other than France. Long-term residents are researchers who spent a period of full-time research activity of at least 5 consecutive (without breaks in research) years in a country other than France. A selection committee working according to European Union Charter for Researchers will independently assess applications.
The position is based in Tours, France and offers a non-renewable term of one year. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will be encouraged to take up the post as early as possible and no later than September 2016.
Entitlements detailed in the contract of employment for the fellowship, include:

FIRST ANNUAL TARTU CONFERENCE
ON RUSSIAN AND EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES
Europe under Stress: The End of a Common Dream?
12-14 June, Tartu, Estonia
Scholars working in all subfields of area studies, including comparative politics, international relations, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and related disciplines, are invited to submit proposals for panels, roundtables and papers for the First Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies.
The Tartu Conference will provide a venue for academic discussion of the fundamental social and political trends affecting all aspects of people’s lives in Russia and Eastern Europe. The organizers hope to institute the Tartu Conference as a major annual event in Russian and East European Studies, bringing together scholars across multiple disciplines, from the region and beyond. Participants of the 2016 conference are encouraged to share their reflections on the multiple crises that challenge the very idea of Europe as a value-based political and security community: the events in and around Ukraine, political transformation in Russia and the country’s newly assertive foreign policy, the Greek debt crisis and the emerging North-South division, the ascent of populist, nationalist and xenophobic political forces, the refugee crisis and the recent events in Syria and the Greater Middle East. All of these developments have implications for the region and globally, making the erstwhile dream of a Common European Home appear ever more remote. With these tensions in mind, conference participants will explore the changing representations of the European legacy in politics, economics, arts, popular culture and public discourse.
The conference will begin with the evening session on Sunday, 12 June, and end in late afternoon on Tuesday, 14 June. The programme will include academic panels, roundtables focused on current issues and plenary sessions featuring, among others, the following speakers:
Archie Brown, University of Oxford
Philip Hanson, Chatham House
Judith Pallot, University of Oxford
Zsuzsa Csergö, Association for the Study of Nationalities
Hans-Henning Schröder, German Institute for International and Security Affairs

ETNOFOOR CALL FOR PAPERS: HUMOUR
One of the founding fathers of anthropology, Bronislaw Malinowski, once referred to anthropology as the “science of the sense of humor” (1966: vii). Yet not many anthropologists have seriously engaged with humour as an important research theme, despite the recognition that humour is important to anthropologists in at least two ways. First, humour is central to the practice of anthropological research: for the method of participant observation, humour is an important strategy (Driessen 2015). It is a key way of getting access to our research population and building rapport and can act as a heuristic tool to gain insight into peoples’ emotions (van Roekel 2013). We might therefore consider humour essential for anthropologists. This compels us to think about the role humour plays in our fieldwork and what our data would look like without it.
Second, humour is also a research topic in and of itself; it provides insight into local norms, paradoxes, taboos, et cetera, as well as in social inequalities and power relations. Giselinde Kuipers (2011), for example, does not study the ‘Danish cartoon crisis’ from a perspective of free speech, but instead questions why cartoons sparked the crisis. How is humour used in strategic ways to assert dominance and influence power relations? How can humour act as a political tool in the struggle over core values in society? Humour is also used for more progressive purposes. It can be a key feature of revolutionary contexts, as is illustrated by studies on the role of humour in the Arab Spring (Anagondahalli and Khamis 2014; Colla 2013; Makar 2011). Humour may also provide a strategy to cope with a repressive regime, for example in the former Soviet Union (Boyer and Yurchak 2010), or in Eritrean politics (Bernal 2013).
Etnofoor invites authors that engage with these issues, either from a methodological perspective or in the form of an ethnographic case study, to submit an abstract of no more than 200 words to [email protected] before October 30th, 2015 . The deadline for authors of accepted abstracts to submit their full paper for consideration is February 15th, 2016 .

The research group Places of Amnesia at the University of Cambridge is pleased to announce the interdisciplinary conference
Places of Amnesia: Interdisciplinary perspectives on forgotten pasts
Cambridge (UK)
April 5-6, 2016
The conference seeks to develop a dialogue between subject experts, established scholars and young researchers on how historical events, people, places and cultural texts are not included in the representation of the past. We seek to establish whether specific sites can be viewed as the loci of forgetting or, recalling and critiquing Pierre Nora's lieux de mémoire, can be studied as places of amnesia.
The symposium will feature a keynote by Carlo Ginzburg and a workshop on methodologies, alongside paper presentations and discussions.
We aim to organise the panels along the following areas:
1. Places of Amnesia: theoretical framework
2. Places of Amnesia and critical theory
3. Transitional justice and amnesia
4. Places of Amnesia in Holocaust studies
5. The socialist past as place of amnesia
6. Postcolonial amnesia
7. Representations of amnesia in literature, art and film
If you are interested in presenting a paper at this conference, please submit an abstract of no longer than 300 words and a short bio.
Proposals with a comparative perspective are also welcome.
Please send your proposal to [email protected] by October 30, 2015.
Participants will be kindly reminded to send their papers two weeks prior to the conference. A publication of the presented papers is planned. We will support a limited number of travel bursaries for scholars working on Central and Eastern European topics, awarded on a competitive basis. The organisers would like to thank the CEELBAS and Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities for their generous support.
