Research Fellowships at the John Carter Brown Library (2016-2017)
The John Carter Brown Library (JCB), an independently funded institution for advanced research on the campus of Brown University, will award approximately forty residential fellowships for the year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. The Library contains one of the world’s premier collections of primary materials related to the discovery, exploration, and settlement of the New World to 1825, including books, maps, newspapers, and other printed objects. JCB Fellowships are open to scholars and writers working on all aspects of the Americas in the early modern period.
Short-term Fellowships are for two to four months with a monthly stipend of $2,100. Open to US and foreign citizens who are engaged in pre- or post-doctoral or independent research. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examinations at the time of application.
Long-Term Fellowships are for five to ten months with a monthly stipend of $4,200. These include two to four NEH Fellowships, for which an applicant must be a US citizen or have lived in the US for the three years preceding the application deadline, and other long-term JCB awards for which all nationalities are eligible. Graduate students are not eligible for long-term JCB Fellowships.
Recipients of all fellowships must relocate to Providence and be in continuous residence at the JCB for the full term of the award. Rooms are available for rent at Fiering House, the JCB’s Fellows’ residence, a beautifully restored 1869 house just four blocks from the Library.

The BIGSSS-HWK Visiting Fellowship is an international researcher mobility program offering a 6-month research stay at two renowned academic institutions in social sciences: The Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg , being one of Germanys leading institutes for advanced study, is a foundation of the federal states of Bremen and Lower Saxony and the city of Delmenhorst. The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) is an inter-university institute of the University of Bremen and Jacobs University Bremen supported by the German Excellence Initiative. The program supports excellent research of outstanding scholars. Fellows benefit from exceptional intellectual and research conditions. The Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Cologne is pleased to invite applications for fellowships for the academic year 2016/17 . Description
Since 1983, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies has offered visiting fellowships to promote interdisciplinary international research in a supportive community of scholars. This widely respected residential program offers time to pursue scholarly inquiry, advance personal research, and collaborate with other scholars and practitioners from across the US and around the globe. Visiting fellows pursue research related to Kellogg Institute themes of democracy and human development, share their research with the Notre Dame scholarly community, and have the opportunity to publish in Kellogg’s peer-reviewed Working Paper Series .
While at the Kellogg Institute, fellows interact with leading scholars one-on-one and through the Institute’s seminars and lectures, international conferences, roundtable discussions on world affairs, and cultural events. The facilities at the Hesburgh Center are ideal for scholarly research.
Visiting fellows have spacious offices, on-site information technology support, personal library services through a branch of the University’s library, and use of a variety of campus facilities. Fellowships are offered for the academic year (August to May) or the fall (August to December) or spring semesters (January to May). In exceptional cases, two-year postdoctoral visiting fellowships may be offered to one or two applicants per year.
Eligibility
Institute invites applications from scholars and practitioners who conduct international research on themes of democracy and/or human development . Applicants may come from any country and typically fall into three groups:
* Promising junior and midcareer scholars (typically postdocs and assistant or associate professors);
* Distinguished senior scholars with an established record of scholarly excellence;
* Accomplished policy makers, journalists, and other practioners whose knowledge and experience can link policy and scholarship;
* Most successful applicants have to hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a social science discipline or in history;
* In exceptional cases, the Institute will support applicants with a PhD or its equivalent in other disciplines;
* The Institute welcomes applications from eminent scholars and practioners who do not hold a PhD;
* Advanced ABD graduate students may apply, but awards are contingent on their having completed the PhD before beginning the fellowship.
The following should be considered when applying for a Kellogg Institute fellowship:
* Advanced English language proficiency is required;
* Foreign nationals must have a valid passport and be able to obtain a J-1 Visa.

About HSE
The HSE is a young, dynamic, fast-growing Russian research university. Over the past twenty years, the HSE has become one of Russia's largest universities in the fields of economics, social sciences and humanities, and has earned the reputation of a national leader in higher education. One of its unique features has been its direct involvement in socioeconomic reforms in Russia, which has allowed HSE to develop as a “project and research university” where education, fundamental and applied research, and "think tank" activities are combined for the comprehensive development of society. Committed to high-quality research, HSE now has over twenty international research laboratories, led by eminent professors from all over the world; more such laboratories are expected to be opened by early 2016.
Requirements
Candidates must hold a recent Ph.D. in philosophy, cultural studies, visual studies, or a related field, or be within a year of completion at the time of application. The successful candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research publishable in reputable peer-reviewed journals with research support provided by the university’s Centre for Advanced Studies. The appointments will be made for three years in the first instance, starting in September 2016, with reviews of teaching and research during the third year.
Benefits
The salary is competitive, indexed to inflation annually, and subject to a 13% flat income tax. The university offers health insurance (free of charge), language assistance, and other social benefits; travel support and other research assistance are generous. The teaching load of newly hired faculty is minimal and service is not required; heavy emphasis is placed on high quality research.
