University - Call for fellowship applications
The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University is now accepting applications for residential fellowships for the 2016-17 academic year.
Imagine a place where great minds are brought together to confront the problems of the day, where original interdisciplinary thinking is the norm, where extraordinary collaborations become possible, where ideas can change our world. CASBS was founded as such a place in 1954 and remains so today.
CASBS has hosted generations of scholars and scientists who come for a year as fellows. Former fellows include Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, winners of MacArthur "genius awards," and hundreds of members of the National Academies. Fellows have played key roles in starting new fields, ranging from cognitive science to behavioral economics to the sociology of urban poverty. They have developed new policies and practices in fields as diverse as medicine, education, electoral politics, Third World development, and crime prevention.
The CASBS fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for scholars to pursue innovative research and expand their horizons while engaging in a diverse, interdisciplinary community. A CASBS fellowship has been considered a career milestone for any scholar, and most recipients report that the year had a transformative effect on their work.

CONFERENCES / КОНФЕРЕНЦИИ

Spaces and Places of Leisure, Recreation and Sociability in Early Modernity (c. 1500-1800)
Deutsches Historisches Institut London, Dr. Angela Schattner
19.05.2016-21.05.2016, London, Deutsches Historisches Institut, 17
Bloomsbury Square, WC1A 2NJ London
Deadline: 08.11.2015
This conference looks at practices of leisure, recreation and
sociability in pre-modern societies and how these were reflected in and
shaped by spatial practices. As is the case today, sociable, leisure and
recreational practices and events were important means for strengthening
associations and social bonds, creating local and regional identities,
and maintaining distinctions. While the role and practices of
sociability in clubs, societies and guilds have been well explored in
recent decades, their connections with leisure and recreation have been
neglected. Sociability has in recent years featured prominently in
histories of consumer societies and material culture. A new interest in
spatiality has also led to an intensive investigation of sociable public
places such as coffee houses, clubs, salons, shops, and taverns and
their connection with the emergence of a (political) public sphere.
(Spatial) practices and modes of sociable leisure and recreation in
early modern society, however, have received much less attention. The
main research undertaken in this area is largely concerned with English
urban developments in commercial leisure in the eighteenth century,
while practices and spaces of recreation, diversion and sociability
before 1660 and beyond Europe have only very recently come into clearer
focus.
The aim of this conference is to take stock of the current state of
research in the field of spatial practices of leisure, recreation and
sociability. It aims to bridge the gap between histories of recreation,
leisure and sociability in the eighteenth century and earlier periods,
and to facilitate conversations between historians working on different
case studies in Europe and beyond in order to develop comparative
perspectives. Contributions might investigate spatial practices or the
creation and usage of public, economic, exclusive or private places and
spaces for leisure and sociability in urban, courtly or rural contexts.
Papers are also welcome to explore different forms of leisure and
recreation (sport, games, performances, drinking and eating etc.) and
sociability (for example, with family, friends, neighbours, status
groups, work and religious associations etc.)
Papers could address issues such as the following, but are not limited
to this list:
1. Topographies of places and spaces. What are the different places and
spaces of leisure, recreation and sociability in early modern towns and
villages? How are they connected? Are different spaces used by the same
groups on different occasions or do they co-exist?
2. Multi-functionality of spaces. What other purposes do sociable places
serve and does the multi-functionality of places influence or reflect on
the practices of leisure and sociability?
3. Comparisons. How do practices and spaces differ between town and
country, between different regions, between countries? Are there
similarities?
4. Transfer of practices from town to country and vice versa, between
cities, between countries. Who are the agents of transfer? How are
fashions created and transferred?
5. Change over time. How did spatial practices of leisure and
sociability change over time? Which spatial practices or places formerly
in use were abandoned, and what replaced them? Who or what initiated
these changes? Who opposed these changes and how?
6. Social relations created in sociable places and spaces and modes of
inclusion or exclusion (gender, status, age).
The conference will be held at the German Historical Institute London on
19-21 May 2016. Proposals from scholars at any stage in their career are
invited and papers with an interdisciplinary approach are particularly
welcome.
Standard travel expenses and the cost of accommodation for the duration
of the conference will be reimbursed.
If you are interested in presenting a paper, please submit an abstract
of up to 300 words and a short CV by 8 November 2015.

Call For Papers: Digitorium 2016: Digital Humanities Conference
https://apps.lib.ua.edu/blogs/digitorium/
We seek proposals on Digital Humanities work from researchers, practitioners, and graduate students which showcase innovative ways in which digital methods have brought scholarship and scholarly communities to life, whether locally or globally. Our plenary speaker Professor Thomas H. Luxon (Dartmouth College) will anchor our program of events, presenting his pioneering work in founding The John Milton Reading Room, a major set of digital literary editions, created through scholarly collaboration. This session engages our main focus on digital methods and the communities which these can forge, as well as our subject-specific interests in Early Modern studies. We especially welcome proposals which discuss the use of digital methods and their novel results for research, pedagogy, and public scholarship.
2016 marks the launch of our inaugural journal, the eponymous Digitorium: all conference presentations are eligible for inclusion in the first issue, and we will be taking full advantage of a digital medium to incorporate papers, multi-media elements, visualizations, interactive posters, and more.
We have three key “pathways” for which participants can submit abstracts:
Digital Methods: presentations on exciting new applications of digital methods, whether to bring an under-served subject to public attention, or to break new ground in established fields.
Methods in Early Modern Digital Scholarship: proposals on the use of digital techniques in early modern studies, including literary and historical scholarship.
Methods in American Studies Digital Scholarship: proposals on the use of digital techniques in any aspect of American studies, broadly conceived to include the earliest known surviving evidence of Native American people to present day issues, from history to literature, music, religious studies, and gender and race studies.
Proposals:
We seek proposals for the following types of presentation for the conference and pre-conference days:
20-minute papers.
5-minute lightning talks.
Posters.
Digital exhibits
Bring your digital exhibit to the conference and present it as you would a poster.
Workshops to share techniques which you have found useful.
Roundtables.
Experiential presentations
20-30 minute workshop-style presentations walking your audience through a digital method which you have used for specific scholarly outcomes.
Panels of three or four 20-minute papers or two experiential presentations.
Panels comprised of a whole project team.
All proposals should be made via the Submissions page on the conference website ( https://apps.lib.ua.edu/blogs/digitorium/ ). They should be between 300-500 words, with a 100-word version for inclusion in the conference program should the proposal be successful. Deadline for submissions is 10 December 2015.
For more information about the conference, including our plenary speaker, the venue, and the departments generously offering their support for this event, please explore our website. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr. Emma Annette Wilson, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Alabama Digital Humanities Center, at [email protected] and she will be happy to help, or to receive early proposals or ideas for Digitorium.

Call for Articles:
The City in Russian Culture
Edited by Pavel Lyssakov (St. Petersburg State University, Russia) and Stephen M. Norris (Miami University, Ohio, USA)
This edited volume aims to map out the roles Russian cities have acquired across time and space and in doing so, to illustrate how Russian cities have been projections of the vision of their planners, how they have projected images about themselves, and how they have created their own cultures. While a great deal has been written about the many cultural myths attached to St. Petersburg and Moscow’s function as site of power, less attention has been paid to other Russian cities. The City in Russian Culture will be more comprehensive in its coverage and will contain essays that explore topics and places such as Nizhny Novgorod’s commercial prowess in the 19 th century; life in a “closed” (ZATO) city during the Soviet era; Kiev’s image as a contested “Russian” city and its importance to Russian identity; and Siberian regional memory cultures in Irkutsk (to name four possibilities). Finally, this volume will contain essays on Moscow and St. Petersburg that move beyond the typical ways these two cities have been explored, including chapters on the Moscow text of Russian cinema and the role of spatial relations in St. Petersburg’s literary narratives.
The City in Russian Culture will be an interdisciplinary work that combines urban studies, cultural studies, and history. We particularly welcome articles that discuss hitherto unaddressed subjects (and geographical places) and use innovative approaches.
The language of the volume is English. We are looking for articles between 8,000-10,000 words.
Please send a 500-word proposal to one of the two co-editors by October 15, 2015 . Final submission of articles will be March 31, 2016 .
