Cornell University, Society for the Humanities

Society Fellowships, 2016 - 2017, focal theme "SKIN"

Institution Type:   College / University
Location:   New York, United States
Position:   Post-Doctoral Fellow

Six to eight Fellows will be appointed. Selected Fellows will collaborate with the Director of the Society for the Humanities, Timothy Murray, Professor of Comparative Literature and English and Curator of the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, an international research center on new media. The Senior Scholars in Residence will be Anne Cheng, Professor of English and of the Center for African American Studies, Princeton University, Mary Flanagan, Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor in Digital Humanities, Dartmouth College, Cristina Malcolmson, Professor of English, Bates College, and Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Design, Harvard University.  Senior Scholars in Residence will spend one week on campus during the 2016 - 2017 academic year.

FOCAL THEME 2016-17: SKIN

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University seeks interdisciplinary research projects that reflect on philosophical, aesthetic, political, ecological, religious, psychoanalytical, and cultural understandings of skin. Thinking skin calls upon cultural horizons, religious traditions, flesh, haptics, signs, texts, images, biopolitics, screens, sounds, and surfaces. From the earliest writings on medicine and religion to more recent theories of race, sexuality, gender, class, and ethnicity, how might thinking or making skin inform the global cultural experience from North to South, East to West, South to South. We invite research projects across historical periods, disciplinary boundaries, geographic territories, and social contexts.

For classical traditions, skin plays a role in representing the breadth of mythological empowerment, from the Occidental classics and Ancient Egypt to Navajo culture. Theoretical and philosophical approaches might dwell on the contrasts between tactility and opticality or skin as a membrane of intersubjective and global connectivity. Psychoanalysis theorizes skin as the figure of touch, desire, trauma, and “the skin-ego,” while theorists of affect and haptics might study configurations of aging, sexuality, gender, queer and transgender studies.

Also welcome are biopolitical considerations ranging from torture and subjugation to race, eugenics, and genomics whose representations have been central to the arts. Scholars of the arts and technology might emphasize tattooing, surface architecture, technoskins, prostheses, nanotechnologies, and the touch of mobile devices, connectivity, gaming, and mobile media.

Scholars of “medical humanities” might study questions of the complex place of skin in disease, contamination, and contagion, just as these problematics are important in the history of travel literature, geopolitical tensions, and literary and artistic fascinations with the viral.

The David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future co-sponsors one fellowship to support scholarly work addressing TIME as it relates to energy, the environment or economic development. For more information about the Atkinson Center, please visit  http://www.acsf.cornell.edu/ .

Society for the Humanities

The Society for the Humanities was established at Cornell University in 1966 to support research and teaching in the humanities. It is intended to be at once a research institute, a stimulus to educational innovation, and a continuing society of scholars. The Society and its Fellows have fostered path-breaking interdisciplinary dialogue and theoretical reflection on the humanities at large.

Fellows include scholars from other universities and members of the Cornell faculty released from regular duties. The fellowships are held for one academic year. Each Society Fellow will receive $50,000. Applicants living outside North America are eligible for an additional $2,000 to assist with travel costs.

Fellows spend their time in research and writing, participate in the weekly Fellows Seminar, and offer one seminar related to their research. The seminars are generally informal, related to the Fellow's research, and open to graduate students, suitably qualified undergraduates, and faculty members. Fellows are encouraged to explore topics they would not normally teach and, in general, to experiment freely with both the content and the method of their courses.

Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University’s heritage. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ICLA 2016
Association Internationale de Littérature Comparée/
International Comparative Literature Association
XXIst Congress, July 21 – July 27, 2016
University of Vienna, Austria
CONGRESS THEME
The many languages of comparative literature
The comparison of literary texts from different cultural spheres and in different languages was at the origin of comparative literature. Even after comparatist paradigms have changed and developed, and after comparative criticism has expanded considerably, the crossing of borders between languages is still essential to the discipline.
For the first time, the theme of a congress organized by the International Comparative Literature Association will be "language" – language in all its meanings and embedded in various contexts: as a "national" idiom, the basis of literary texts: as source-language and target-language in literary translation: as the set of languages forming "world literature" in its literary manifestation (and as the canon of languages that "world literature" is actually concentrating on). And language – both written and spoken – is not just the self-evident medium of all the objects of comparative literature, but also the indispensable meta-language of scientific discourse and literary terminology. The multilingualism of comparative literature is both a challenge and an opportunity: from its beginnings, the polymorphous diversity of world literature has constituted the attraction and wider reach of comparatist reading; on the other hand, even the most accomplished polyglot comparatist can master only a relatively small range of languages. This fact conditions the discourse more than might be apparent in a scholarly culture increasingly influenced by the English language.

The congress will also focus on language in its broadest sense: the usage of language by social and ethnic groups as vectors of literature, the language of themes and discourses, language as a literary subject, language as the expression of central problems and ideas negotiated in the various literatures of the world, and even in its metaphorical sense, as "languages" of styles and forms. As an infinite code with constant need for decryption, the international sign system of literature perpetually reproduces the myth of the confusion of tongues and sets new tasks to multilingual humanity in coming to terms with literature and its criticism.

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures – Russian Studies at McGill University
The Russian Provinces in Film
Montreal, on October 22-24

We invite papers on the subject of the Russian provinces as addressed by Soviet and post-Soviet cinema, i.e., films set in the provinces, and films and TV series about attempts by provincials “to make it” in Moscow. In addition to a number of panels, this small, tightly-focused conference will include film presentations and discussions with Birgit Beumers, Nancy Condee, and Mark Lipovetsky.

Context:  In the last decade, a large body of research has created the new field of provincial studies, which Otto Boele describes as a “new and promising direction in Russian scholarship that studies the provinces ( provintsiia ) both as an object of ideological reflection and a distinctive semiosphere producing its own discourses and texts.” In mass culture, the traditional privileging of the center over the backward provinces gives way to the view of the provinces as a repository of the national tradition and moral strength. Conversely, high literature and art-house films provide an alternative, harshly critical image of the provinces. These shifts in hierarchies and meanings are especially apparent in TV and film, because these are the most “powerful tools of the central control of meaning” (Beumers, Hutchings, Rulyova). Because cinema relies both on governmental financial support and on popular approbation, it is a major field for constructing national cultural discourses. The provinces of myth, just like the Gogolian provinces, remain “the emptiness” that can be filled by any ideological content.

Some of the topics to be addressed :
- recurring motifs and tropes in representations of the provinces and provincials;
- differences and similarities in cinematic representations of the provinces in Soviet and Post-Soviet film;
- the chronotope of the post-Soviet provinces;
- construction of the character of the ‘provincial’ and the cultural discourses these constructions employ and reveal;
- the provinces as a symbolic locale for alternative discourses and political opposition

Please submit a page-long abstract of your paper and a short CV to Prof. Lyudmila Parts at   [email protected] .  The deadline to submit your materials is August 10 th .

Love Letters
3rd Global Meeting of the Letters and Letter Writing project

Call for Participation 2016

Thursday 21st January – Saturday 23rd January 2016
London, United Kingdom

This is not a love letter
“I read over your letters again and again, and am continually taking them up as if I had just received them; but alas! They only serve to make me more strongly regret your absence: for how amiable must her conversation be, whose letters have so many charms?” Pliny the Younger, Epistulae, 6.7 (Translation William Melmoth 1915)

Is this a love letter? Or is it something else entirely?

It might have started out as a communication from Pliny to his young wife Calpurnia. However, he included it in a collection destined for public consumption. How much did he rewrite the letter for his new audience? And did he give a public reading of this letter as was common at this time, before circulating it? Was this letter ever delivered to Calpurnia in person, or only publicly, as a new literary genre?

What is and does a love letter? Are there any essential elements, or do the defining characteristics of amorous correspondence change from generation to generation, and from one culture to another? Is a song, the words of which adopt the conventions of epistolary communication, a letter? Or a love poem in an envelope? Or a greeting card?

This conference provides a rare opportunity for a global community to come together and discuss both traditional and alternative love letters. This community could be made up of those in the creative arts, writers, academics or non-academics, in other words anybody with an interest in this area that is willing to share and participate. This conference forms part of a specific focus research stream and continues dialogues started as part of the Letters and Letter Writing project that began two years ago. Its aim is to enrich current research, inspire new ideas and approaches and take this discussion farther both in terms of creating new networks and encouraging cross disciplinary projects that could find their form in either events or publications. It might interest those in the fields of literature, history, film studies, gender studies, political science, linguistics, musicology, creative writing, life-writing to name just a few.

The Advisory Group welcomes the submission of proposals for short workshops, practitioner-based activities, performances, papers and pre-formed panels. We particularly welcome short film screenings; photographic essays; installations; interactive talks and alternative presentation styles that encourage engagement. Submissions should be no more than 300 words and are invited on these or cognate themes for any historical period or geographical location;

In addition we welcome submissions which cross the divide between two or even all three project areas. If you would like to be considered for a cross project session, please mark your submission “Crossover Submission”.

Workshop
As part of the conference, there will be an opportunity for those who wish to participate in an afternoon workshop focusing on “Reading Erotic Poetry“. The workshop is an ongoing project within the Exploring the Erotic project. You will explore the ways in which poems can accommodate the erotic, moving from subtle erotic love expressions over blunt eroticism to hard pornographic features in erotic poetry. The workshop will address other forms of writing, including letters and letter writing.

Evil Spaces, Wicked Places
The Geographies and Architectures of Evil

Call for Presentations 2016
Special Focus: London

Monday 18th January – Wednesday 20th January 2016
London, United Kingdom

This inclusive interdisciplinary project explores the relationship between evil, spaces and places. From the circles of hell in Dante’s Inferno to the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge and the massacres in Bosnia and Rwanda, from crumbling sanatoria to gothic haunted houses and basements of imprisonment and sexual oppression, evil has many geographies and inhabits a wide array of accidental or designed architectures. Places become defined as evil; spaces are made evil by the actions of people or acquire the atmosphere and presence of evil. Whether real or imagined, these spaces and places speak to us of unease, fear, menace, dread, horror, the supernatural and something beyond what is human. Evil. This project seeks to map and explore the relationship between persons, evils, spaces and places.

For 2016 the project will focus specifically on London as a locus of evil spaces and places. Described in The Guardian newspaper as “the dark heart of Britain, the place where democracy goes to die, immensely powerful, equally unaccountable”, London is the home of Jack the Ripper, Sweeney Todd, and Madame Tussauds Chamber of Horrors. The city has cringed before the Black Death and the Peasants’ Revolt; it has seen kings and queens crowned and beheaded; it has gawked at Shakespeare’s Wyrd Sisters, the Great Fire, cholera, and the Great Stink that led to the creation of one of the first modern sewer systems. It is full of hauntings and ghosts and things that go bump in the night.

London is all these and more, which prompts the question of how its history, geography and architecture reflect all these aspects of the city’s identity, even as they interact and continue to create the monstrosity that is the city known as “London?”

Topics for possible presentation include, but are not limited to:

Evil and London Landmarks

Tower of London in history and fiction
Westminster Palace and London in fiction as a centre of black magic and plots for world domination
St. Paul’s Cathedral hovering over London rising from its own ashes

Call for Papers
Interdisciplinarity and Pluralism: The Practice of Intellectual History and Conceptual History

A Civic Constellation II Workshop

in Cooperation with St Andrews Institute of Intellectual History
and Concepta: International Research School in Conceptual History and Political Thought Institute of Intellectual History, University of St Andrews

3–5 September 2015

Over the last few decades, the aims and approaches for the study of the history of ideas have been under close scrutiny and constant redefinition. Either as part of a deliberate reflection or in the course of research on different topics, the meaning and goals of the history of ideas have been critically reviewed and questioned. As a result, the contours of the field remain fluid; plurality and interdisciplinarity are the most prominent features of both intellectual and conceptual history, the two most prominent branches of the history of ideas as currently practised.

Within intellectual history and conceptual history interdisciplinarity is frequently used as a catchword instead of a methodological engine of meaningful research. As such, the practice and contingency of interdisciplinarity in research and teaching challenge an otherwise sound theoretical justification of historical practice. From this perspective, some scholars have viewed the heterogeneity and diversity that define intellectual and conceptual history as weaknesses, and therefore as reasons to strengthen the frontiers between approaches and academic disciplines.

This workshop seeks to reflect on the role that interdisciplinarity and methodological pluralism play in the practice of intellectual and conceptual history, with the aim of intensifying the debate between them and exploring their relevance to the practice of other disciplines. Ultimately, this also opens up new paths for curricular innovation. Hence we welcome proposals addressing these issues either specifically or as part of broader research agendas in intellectual history and in conceptual history, from political theory and philosophy to international relations.

Deadline for submitting proposals (titles and up to 150-word abstracts): 5 August 2015

Russia – Culture of (Non-)Conformity: From the Late Soviet Time to the Present
Special Issue of the Journal  Russian Literature , 2017
Guest Editors: Klavdia Smola, Mark Lipovetsky

Over its history Russia’s political system has created and fostered a culture of (non-)conformity. Since the 1960s, one can observe a rapidly growing sphere of cultural underground. Its institutions and practices are studied as well as those within official culture of the period. Less explored is the sphere situated in-between the official and non-official cultures as well as transitions between them. This stratification became established in the late Soviet period and continues to “do its job” today. During its development it has passed through several periods of transformation, undergone important modifications, and experienced a lengthy interruption in the 1990s.
This special issue of  Russian Literature  will look at shifts in Russian culture along the continuum from conformity to non-conformity between the 1960s and the present day. Our focus is to analyse the structures and mechanisms of culture divided between the spheres of official/non-official/ and semi-official. The relevance of this approach is especially obvious in current political situation in Russia, when the growing ideological homogenisation of the public sphere and the resulting practices of (semi)tabooisation are today once again breaking the Russian intellectual domain up into the these three realms. Comparison between these spheres in late Soviet period and today are especially significant for our project. Paper may tackle either the trajectory of cultural assimilation or of dissent, as well as oscillations between these spheres. Attempts to place the phenomenon of (non-)conformity in the context of cultural development and change since the late Soviet era to today’s split between conformist and countercultural practices are particularly welcome.
The editors of this issue would like to encourage submissions in the fields of Russian cultural studies, literary studies, history of art, theatre and film studies, and book and publishing research. Interdisciplinary work straddling the boundary between cultural studies and social and political science is likewise warmly encouraged. Papers addressing the topic from within a single discipline are however equally welcome.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
1.        The cultural public sphere and its transformation from Khrushchev to Putin
2.        Borders between the official and non-conformists: literature, art, theatre
3.        Protest art and action art in the face of prohibition
4.        Cultural practices and mechanisms of conformity/non-conformity in arts
5.        Between conformity and non-conformity: spaces of cultural autonomy
6.        Epideictics and panegyrics vs. subversion and satire
7.        Conformity and non-conformity in the (human) sciences
8.        Books and publishing (conformist and non-conformist)
9.        Museums and exhibitions (conformist and non-conformist)
10.     The cultural public sphere and cultural policy (awards and funding)
11.     Censorship: strategies, impacts and transformations/development during the period under consideration
12.     The Aesopian language of culture: smuggling the forbidden into the public domain
Submissions must be in English. Interested parties are asked to submit details of their proposed topic in an abstract (max. 2,000 characters), by email to   [email protected]  and   [email protected]   by 30 September at the latest.  After approval of abstracts, the deadline for articles will be 10 January, 2016.
