Recruitment for the 2016/17 Fellowship is now open - closing date 05 June 2015

IAS Fellowship
Eligibility Criteria
*  Applicants of any nationality are eligible to apply (including UK citizens);
*  Applicants from any discipline are eligible to apply;
*  Applicants may come from an academic or non-academic background (e.g. public intellectuals, artists, writers, film makers, journalists, policy makers, politicians);
*  Applications should be researchers or non-academics who have a well-established or strongly emerging international reputation, have made major contributions to their field, and can provide evidence of research leadership and/or public impact. They are expected to have played a significant role in shaping their discipline or field through their outputs, achievements and indicators of esteem.
*  Applicants must submit a  complete  application as described in the Application Procedures;
*  Applicants must agree to the conditions of the IAS Fellowships as described in the Further Particulars.
Application Procedures
The following   application materials are required by the deadline   05 June 2015 :
*  A letter of application;
*  A Curriculum Vitae/Résumé;
*  Two references (at least one to be external to Durham);
*  A Fellowship proposal;
The Fellowship proposal  (#4 ) must also be copied into the attached pro forma (see bottom of page) and submitted for peer review to the Durham academic department with which the proposed research most closely aligns. Applicants must allow sufficient time for the reviewer to complete and return this to the IAS by the 05 June deadline . It is also essential that the letter of application notes that this pro forma has been submitted and to whom. If it is not possible to determine an appropriate departmental reviewer, this should be noted in the letter of application. Details of all academic departments are noted below
Application Materials
Letter of Application
The letter of application  must  make clear which period applicants would like to spend at Durham (October-December 2016  OR  January-March 2017. If either period is suitable please indicate).

If a teaching buy-out or a contribution towards a loss of earnings is requested a costing  must  be included with the application. Note that this cannot be done retrospectively (i.e. once an offer of a Fellowship has been made) so applicants should consult with their home institution prior to applying.

The IAS normally offers teaching buy-out costs at a pro-rata rate at junior replacement level, up to £8,000 (for the full three month period, pro rata for shorter periods). In due course, should the IAS offer a Fellowship, a letter from the applicant’s home institution will be required supporting this claim. The buy-out costs of salaried Fellows will be paid directly to their home institutions. Fellows who are self-employed will be reimbursed directly.

Applicants  must  indicate in the letter of application if they will be accompanied by a spouse or partner and/or if they have a family that will be travelling with them. However, accommodation suitable for families is limited and the IAS cannot guarantee that such accommodation will be provided. The IAS cannot cover the costs of family travel and subsistence.

Finally, applicants  must  indicate in the letter of application how they were made aware of the Fellowship (such as the New York Review of Books; word of month; via their own institution etc.).
Curriculum Vitae/Résumé
The Curriculum Vitae/Résumé should include evidence of research interests and career to date, international recognition and impact in the field.
References
References should be  emailed by referees directly to the IAS Administrator  (see below) by the appropriate deadline (05 June 2015).  The IAS will not make any request for references not received.  References should include comments about the applicant's standing in their particular field, the quality of the applicant's research, the level of recognition that has been received for this research, the quality of the proposed research to be undertaken at Durham, and the degree to which the applicant would contribute to and benefit from being in an interdisciplinary community of Fellows.
Fellowship Proposal
The Fellowship proposal (c.500-1000 words) should describe the activities planned whilst holding an IAS Fellowship, the contacts and contribution envisaged in Durham, and how the proposed research will fit with the 2016/17  Scale theme. Applicants should take into consideration the evaluation criteria when completing the proposal. This must be submitted with the application letter and CV.

In addition  to forwarding your research proposal with the  full application  to the IAS Administator (  [email protected] ), your Research Proposal should  also  be  uploaded  to the proforma below ( see bottom of page ) and sent to an appropriate Durham academic, with a request to send comments on it directly to the IAS by the  05 June  deadline. A list of academic Departments and Research Institutes is noted below:
*  Academic Departments
*  Research Institutes
Applications are also welcome from Durham University staff but, in addition to the above materials, a letter from their Head of Department  must be submitted with the application, confirming that the applicant has their permission to seek a Fellowship. See  Internal Applications  webpage for further details.
Application Evaluation
All applications will be considered carefully by the IAS Fellowship Selection Committee according to the following evaluation criteria:
*  Criterion 1 . International standing and contribution of the candidate to the field, as appropriate to the career stage of the candidate (40%)
*  Criterion 2 . Quality of the proposal for activities while at the IAS and relevance to the annual theme (30%)
*  Criterion 3 . Contribution to the wider scholarly community at Durham (20%)
*  Criterion 4 . Collegiality and ability to contribute to the community of IAS Fellows (10%)

The sources of information for assessing applications include the application materials (including references) provided by the applicant, publicly accessible information (including published articles or books, works of art etc.) and advice sought from peer reviewers.

In selecting the final list of successful Fellows, the Selection Committee will also take into account
*  the limit of 10 Fellowships in each of the Oct-Dec and Jan-March periods;
*  the geographical and disciplinary balance of the Fellows in each period;
*  the balance between established scholars/practitioners and emerging talent.
It is intended that decisions for the 2016/17 recruitment phase will be announced via  email   only  by the end of September 2015 .
Closing Date
The closing date for applications to the IAS Fellowship scheme for 2016/17 is  05 June 2015 . Applications must be emailed to the IAS Administrator,  Linda Crowe , no later than this date. Applicants must also state how they found out about the Fellowship programme .

UTOPIAN LANDSCAPES AND LANDSCAPE UTOPIAS
Location: California, United States
Call for Papers Date: 2015-06-09
Date Submitted: 2015-05-15
Announcement ID: 222587
UTOPIAN LANDSCAPES AND LANDSCAPE UTOPIAS
In ways both literal and figural, landscape history is a history of utopias. It is a history of places that have been richly imagined but that, perhaps by necessity, seldom fully realized. Many are not meant to be built at all. One of the oldest utopian landscapes is the paradise garden that features in many religious cultures of the West and the Middle East. On larger scales as well, utopian landscapes have been envisioned to improve the world as we know it, and they have been described in a variety of media including texts, diagrams, plans, paintings, and drawings. While utopia has long been a topic in architectural history and theory, designed landscapes have only rarely been addressed through this theoretical lens and utopian landscapes are still less well known.
This session seeks to uncover these utopian landscapes, and to expand the discussion of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia in the history of the built environment. The session will provide the opportunity to explore the cultural, social, and political contexts of utopian, dystopian, and unbuilt landscapes; the role of design competitions in the fostering of landscape utopias; the relationship between imagined landscape designs and their (un)built projects; and the idea of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia in landscape history. Questions to be addressed are not limited to but may include the following: What is the relationship between social and landscape utopias? What role have ideas of nature and space played in landscape utopias, dystopias, and heterotopias? How have utopian and dystopian landscapes been represented over time?
We invite paper proposals that deal with these and related topics and questions. Papers may address a variety of geographies, scales, representational media, and time frames, as well as a range of theoretical and historical issues.
The panel is part of the Society of Architectural Historians 69th International Annual Conference to be held in PAsadena/Los Angeles on April 6-10, 2016. Please submit paper proposals on the SAH website:  http://www.sah.org/conferences-and-programs/2016-conference---pasadena-la .

— разнообразие предлагаемых научными утопиями образов;
— открытия и инновации в основе этих образов;
— значения идеи прогресса;
— страхи и опасения, содержащиеся в научных утопиях.

2. Научные утопии и наука:
— роль художественной литературы в научном дискурсе и научных дебатах;
— роль художественной литературы в перестройке отношений между научными дисциплинами;
— научная этика в зеркале научных утопий;
— использование научных утопий для признания властями проекта или научного заведения.

3. Научные утопии в восприятии обществом:
— распространение научных утопий и их публика;
— научные утопии и общепопулярная наука и техника;
— научные утопии и власть, роль цензуры.

Заявки на английском, французском или русском языке (1500 знаков) в сопровождении с краткими биографиями авторов принимаются по адресу   [email protected] до 30 ноября 2015 года.

Dear Colleagues,
Please consider submitting an abstract to one of these two sessions that will be sponsored by the  Society for Emblem Studies  at the Renaissance Society of America meeting in Boston, March 31- April 2, 2016.
*
To honor the important role that rivers, harbors, bays, and water (more generally) play in Boston’s identity, this panel invites papers that explore emblematic seascapes.
*
Emblems without pictures are typically called “naked.” This panel invites papers that explore this designation. To what extent is the term defensible? How has it been used? Do we still use it?
By June 1 st , please send abstract (150 words) and  curriculum vitae  (300 words) to  Tamara Goeglein (  [email protected] ), Society for Emblem Studies Representative to the RSA.

Philosophy and Poetry
(Edited Volume)
Poetry has been a continuous presence in the realm of philosophy. While the conflation often engendered poetic synchronization to the epistemic and aesthetic concerns of philosophy the cross-currents also opened up interesting instances of dissent. The resultant proliferation of ideas gave impetus to ‘other’ readings of poetry parallel to its traditional nuance. This volume presents scholarly essays that take into account philosophy’s engagement with poetry that goes back to Plato and Aristotle, and is a continuing imperative in the philosophical paradigms of Kant, Hegel, Rousseau, Dilthey, Nietzsche, Jean-Luc Nancy, Merleau-Ponty, Gadamer, Bakhtin, Heidegger, Sartre, Blanchot, Derrida, Adorno, Agamben and others.

This Russian-language WWW project parallels an English-language collected volume project, within the book series "Explorations of the Far Right" (EFR, ed. by Anton Shekhovtsov), and described here:  http://www.pecob.eu/Varieties-of-Contemporary-Russian-Anti-Westernism-Historical-Sources-Ideological-Foundations-Organizational-Expressions

The project's origins, contents and rationale are briefly outlined in the introduction to the series of special issues under the title "Rastsvet russkogo ul'tranatsionalizma i stanovlenie soobshchestva ego issledovatelei" to be found here:

http://www1.ku-eichstaett.de/ZIMOS/forum/docs/forumruss11/1UmlandVvedenie.pdf

Among the authors who have been participating in this project, so far, are Marlene Laruelle (Washington, DC), Anastasia Mitrofanova (Moscow), Nikolai Mitrokhin (Bremen), John B. Dunlop (Stanford), Viktor Shnirelman (Moscow), Evgenii Moroz (+ 2011, St. Petersburg), Marina Peunova (Geneva), Anton Shekhovtsov (Vienna), Vadim Rossman (Bangkok), Mikhail Sokolov (St. Petersburg), Valery Senderov (Moscow), Boris Stepanov (Moscow), Martin Beisswenger (Notre Dame), Stefan Wiederkehr (Berlin), Alan Ingram (London), Aleksandr Kuz'min (Syktyvkar), Mikhail Suslov (Uppsala), Arthur Vafin (Moscow), Emil' Pain (Moscow), Frank Gruener (Heidelberg), Ilya Yablokov (Manchester), Nikolai Sainakov (Tomsk), Michael Kirkwood (Glasgow), Raisa Barash (Moscow), Martin Mueller (St. Gallen), Irina Trotsuk (Moscow), Oxana Pakhlevska (Rome), Boris Khavkin (Moscow), Jussi Lassila (Helsinki), Markus Mathyl (Passau), Jardar Ostbo (Oslo), Ivo Mijnssen (Basel), Anton Sveshnikov (Omsk), Alexander Yanov (New York), Geir Flikke (Oslo), Vera Tolz (Manchester) and Alexander Verkhovsky (Moscow).

Further authors who have earlier contributed to, or have recently agreed to provide papers or essays for, the "Forum" related, in one way or another, to the topic of Russian anti-Westernism are Ludmila Dymerskaia-Tsigel'man (Jerusalem), Alexander J. Motyl (New Brunswick), Roger D. Griffin (Oxford), Gennadi Kostyrchenko (Moscow), Olga Malinova (Moscow), Vladimir Kantor (Moscow), Shohei Saito (Tokyo), Mykola Riabchuk (Kyiv), Andrey Kazantsev (Moscow), Assen Ignatov (+ 2003, Cologne), Alexander Vatlin (Moscow), Ekaterina Dais (Moscow), Aleksey Lastovsky (Minsk), Birgit Menzel (Mainz-Germersheim), Natalia Belitser (Kyiv), Hannes Adomeit (Warsaw) and Sergey Magaril (Moscow).

We are still accepting suitable submissions for the following 10th special issue, and are especially interested in papers focusing on specific or understudied sub-themes within the general issue of anti-Western tendencies in current Russia. See the Table of Contents of the previous 9 issues concerning topics already covered, and possible desiderata.

We require properly footnoted, scholarly researched, well-structured, and thoroughly edited Russian-language texts with a length of no less than 4,000 and no more than 14,000 words. Papers should be based on primary as well as secondary sources, which are fully listed and adequately presented, in footnotes.

We are not only interested in original papers that have not yet been published anywhere. We are also happy to re-publish papers that might have already been printed in Russian or other languages before, but that are, so far, not freely available, in Russian language, on the WWW. In the case that a paper has been published in a Russian printed edition (journal, collected volume) or non-Russian outlet before, authors will have to provide an explicit permission, by the editors of the periodical, website or book where the article originally appeared, for re-publication as a Russian-language PDF file in our open-access web journal. We will usually not re-publish papers that are already available in Russian, on the WWW.

Papers accepted content-wise for publication will only be published in case of a proper adaptation of its linguistic quality and formal style (footnotes, punctuation, headings, references, citations etc.) to the standards of the "Forum" by the author/s. When preparing your text for publication, please, use this formal style required of the final editions of the papers to appear:

http://www1.ku-eichstaett.de/ZIMOS/Vorgaben%20Forum%20RU.pdf

All versions of the papers should be submitted as MS Word Documents.

For authors who wish to publish an English-, German- or Ukrainian-language text on the special issue's topic in Russian language, we can provide qualified Russian translating services. We have professional interpreters who will provide high quality translations which will be edited - stylistically and orthographically - by the journal's editorial board members.

Unfortunately, however, we do not have funds to pay translators. Thus, we regret to state that the costs for translation will, as outlined below, have to borne fully by the author her- or himself. In addition, after provision of a draft translation by our expert-translator, authors will be required to carefully check the translated Russian draft version, before the translator produces the final version of the text for editing by the journal's board and printing.

The translator will, after delivering a satisfactory final version of the translation, have to be paid, by the author/s, EUR0.07 per word of the English, German or Ukrainian original version of the article, i.e., for instance, EUR350 for a 5,000-word article. The word count includes also non-Russian bibliographical literature listed in the footnotes that will not be translated into Russian or transcribed into Cyrillic, yet the formal style of which will be adapted to the format of the "Forum" by the translator. The copyright of the Russian version of the article remains with the translator until the author has made payment for the translation.

Authors of texts that have been published in English, German or Ukrainian before are advised to clarify with the editors of the periodical, book, or non-Russian web site (where the paper originally appeared) whether re-publication in a Russian-language web journal is permissible. The editors of the "Forum" will not take responsibility for any violations of copyright.

Please, submit your text until either
- 1 June 2015 for non-Russian papers yet to be translated, or
- 1 July 2015 for Russian papers,
as an MS Word Document, to:
[email protected] (with cc to [email protected])

If you intend to submit a text, but are still working on its contents and style, or on its translation into Russian, please, send us a brief message with the title of your paper, and the expected final submission date.

We reserve the right to reject texts that either do not fit the concept of the anti-Westernism project, or the format and quality of which do not correspond to the "Forum's" standards.

We look forward to your submission!
Thank you.

 Visiting Assistant Professor, Early Modern
Europe (1400-1750), Bates College

Bates College invites applications for a one-
year position in the history of Early Modern
Europe, to begin August 2015. The History
Department seeks candidates who are capable
of situating Europe in a broader global context,
and who have enough experience teaching
undergraduates to make a dynamic
contribution to our curriculum. Candidates’
dissertations should be completed by time of
employment. The five-course teaching load
will include an introductory one-semester
survey (1400-1750), an upper-level seminar,
and three mid-level thematic courses. These
thematic mid-level courses should be broadly
appealing and transnational, focusing on, for
example, gender, religion, economics, science,
or the environment. Additional responsibilities
will include senior-thesis advising. The
department seeks candidates whose experience
has prepared them to enrich our commitment
to the diversity and inclusiveness of the
College’s community and curriculum through
their ability to engage effectively with
students of diverse backgrounds.
