CBEES Annual Conference 2015
Places and Non-Places of Modernity
Movement, Memory and Imagination in Contemporary Europe
The Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) at Södertörn University, Sweden invites paper proposals for CBEES Annual Conference, to be held in Stockholm on 3–4 December 2015. The conference theme is “Places and Non-Places of Modernity: Movement, Memory and Imagination in Contemporary Europe”.
Call for Panels and Papers
Deadline: 5 May 2015
Conference Description
This interdisciplinary conference will focus on the notion of place in the more recent modernity of globalization and internationalization, with its many histories of movement, migration, transfer and transmission. The scheme of exile has been important for our understanding of modernity, which is defined as the transformation of the old and commonplace. The pace of social change in recent times seems, however, to bring about a different relation to place, perhaps also to be understood as non-place, defined as a space that does not necessarily hold meaning for us.
We invite paper proposals from the humanities, social sciences and environmental sciences to reflect on the relation to place or space in the ways that Eastern and Western Europe have been reshaped, contested and remembered in the transformations after 1989. In particular, this conference focuses on the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe, where Europe appeared as a place, a memory and a lodestar for integration and modernization. What have been the mechanisms and ideas conducting the transfers of goods, people, institutions and values in this new Europe? Is there a “spatial turn” in the study of these processes, with a growth of regionality as a return to a place? What is the relation to place in the experience of contemporary Eastern and Western Europe and how is it articulated in literature and in art, in memory and in exile cultures? What can the “memory boom” tell us about the relation to the places of Europe today?
We invite proposals for individual papers and/or panels. The deadline for all paper and panel proposals is 5 May, 2015. Proposals should include the full title and a brief abstract (250 words). Please include with your abstract a short biographical note (academic affiliation and full contact information). PhD students and younger scholars are particularly encouraged to participate in the conference. Individual papers will be assigned by the conference organizers (CBEES) to a panel according to the topic, and should be short enough to be presented in 15–20 minutes. Word-by-word reading of papers is strongly discouraged.
The Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS) at Södertörn University will precede the conference with an afternoon event on 2 December to celebrate its 15th anniversary. All participants are invited to attend.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 18th International Conference on Conceptual History
The 18 th International Conference on Conceptual History
West University of Timișoara, Romania, 16-18 September 2015
Multi-, Inter-, Pluri-:
Languages, Cultures, and Identities in Complex Societies
The 18th International Conference on Conceptual History will be organized at the West University of Timișoara on 16-18 September 2015 by Victor Neumann and Sorin Antohi, in collaboration with the History of Concepts Group (HCG). The event will bring together researchers from the humanities and the social sciences, in order to foster an inter- and transdisciplinary dialogue between various academic traditions, with a focus on the history of concepts and on conceptual history.
For the first time, the HCG’s annual conference will take place in Romania. There are good reasons for this breakthrough. Conceptual history has a strong footing at the West University of Timișoara, where Reinhart Koselleck received the Doctor Honoris Causa degree in 2005, and to which most of his private library has been generously donated by his family. It is also the place where, in collaboration with the Institute of History of Aachen University (RWTH Aachen), with the support of the Volkswagen Foundation, the Reinhart Koselleck International Doctoral School of Conceptual History and the Centre for Advanced Studies in History were established. Both the School and the Centre concentrate on Begriffgsechichte , with an emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe, and, more generally, on all former communist countries, on Europe as a whole, and beyond. The two institutions have already hosted three international conferences which have resulted in many publications, ranging from collected volumes to thematic blocks, and refereed articles.
The 18th International Conference of Conceptual History in Timișoara will deal with Multi-, Inter-, Pluri-: Languages, Cultures, and Identities in Complex Societies. The aim of the conference is to take stock of, and to analyse, the entangled concepts, paradigms, interpretations, and meanings stemming from, and being used in, complex societies—i.e., societies in which many people, if not most or all, have multiple backgrounds (ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, ideological, etc.). It is a matter of fact that all globalisations (past and present) have resulted in, and have been triggered by, interacting complex societies. To an ever-growing extent, all societies are complex, and even self-centred, ostensibly isolated, homogeneous communities tend to move in the same direction. Hence, the focus of our conference: the conceptual history and phenomenology of such prefixes as multi- , inter- , pluri- .
The first objective of the conference is to highlight the way in which the discourses and practices of multi-, inter-, and pluriculturality have been construed, understood and promoted around the world.
A second objective is to explore the theory and history of the concepts of multi-, inter- and pluriculturality.
The third objective is to further ground the first and second objectives one in a discussion of collective identities.
We invite paper proposals from scholars from all the humanities and social sciences, with a preference for interdisciplinary approaches. Proposals for individual papers should not exceed 400 words, and panel proposals should not exceed 800. The authors’ CVs should not exceed 120 words, including name, institutional affiliation and other relevant information. Each panel will last for two hours, and will include three to four papers. Participants are expected to cover their travel and accommodation expenses. Upon request, the organisers will be able to offer assistance in finding accommodation at reasonable prices. The registration fee is 100 euros.
Please send your proposals to one of the following email addresses:
[email protected] ; [email protected]
no later than 1 JUNE 2015

Fear, Horror and Terror: Experiences, Production and Dissemination The Fear, Horror and Terror Project
Thursday 3rd September - Saturday 5th September 2015
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom
Call for Presentations:
The reality and representations of Fear, Horror and Terror (FHT) increasingly pervade public spaces, discourse and popular culture. No matter where we turn we are either confronted with, or consume, images of these experiences. This in turn both effect, and affect, how we understand, produce and disseminate the multi-dimensions of FHT in everyday life as well as overtime. Accordingly this year's inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary FHT conference will explore the role and consequences of experiences, production and dissemination of Fear, Horror and Terror. Specifically our aim is to critically examine questions such as:
- How are aspects of FHT manifested, disseminated and experienced in everyday life, popular culture, fiction, society, communities or politics?
- How do experiences or images produced by FHT affect the way we understand the world?~ What are the underlying power structures that determine how reality and its representations are produced and how are they are disseminated?
- How do we communicate, activate, constrain and overcome the effects and consequences of experiencing, producing and disseminating FHT?
In addition to academic analysis and case studies, we welcome practitioners, artists, performers, and other approaches, such as those from religious environments, NGO's, therapists, lawyers, and victims/survivors of terrifying events. We also encourage interdisciplinary research that crosses the divide between the social and natural sciences, architecture, law enforcement, medicine, pedagogy, visual arts, literature and popular culture.
At the end of the conference, our aim is to further develop the discussions and dialogues presented at our 9th FHT Conference into new and continued interdisciplinary research, workshops and publications which will help us make sense of the topics discussed in relation to the contested aspects of FHT. To this end all proposals accepted for and presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in an ISBN eBook. Selected proposals may be developed for publication in a dialogic and/or themed hard copy volume(s). All publications from the conference will require editors who will be selected from interested delegates attending the conference. Spaces and tactics of politics: Transnational connections, neoliberalisation and the reshaping of civil society
10-11 December 2015
University of Turku, Finland
Keynote speakers:
Gail Lewis, Birkbeck, University of London
Sandro Mezzadra, University of Bologna
Jemima Repo, University of Helsinki
Neoliberalisation has emerged as a powerful yet multifaceted and contextually specific force that re-draws the boundaries between state and economy, collective and individual, public and private. Although neoliberal ideologies have sought to depoliticise relationships of power and to present the political field as one of ‘no alternatives’, various parts of the world have simultaneously witnessed waves of politicisation and wide-ranging acts of protest that challenge such political trends. Questions of transnational migration, class inequality, gender and sexual identity, and contestations of new and rearticulated forms of racism have become key issues in current politics. The expansion of media technologies (social media, the Internet) has transformed political engagements in a far-reaching way. Many contemporary protests are cross-border in nature, drawing on and creating transnational networks and forms of solidarity. Recent political mobilisations include, for example, mass protests against austerity policies, asylum and refugee activism, the worldwide spread of Occupy movements and other forms of anti-capitalist mobilisation, anti-racist and anti-fascist group activities, feminist and queer activism, and the proliferation of groups politicising lifestyles and everyday life. On the other hand, we have also seen the rise of far-right and anti-immigration movements.
This conference maps this terrain of political struggles and, while acknowledging established forms of political action such as social movements and NGOs, seeks to unearth and make visible the spaces and tactics of political contestation that tend to escape the conventional purview of politics. In this way, the conference seeks to advance our understanding of the logics of political struggles and resistance in the current political conjuncture. How are these struggles organised? What kinds of social change do they envisage and how do they strive to achieve these? What tactics do they employ and what bonds of solidarity do they engender? How do people contest forms of power in their mundane, everyday practices and activities? How are diverse axes of inequality contested or reproduced in political engagements? Where do contemporary struggles of class, gender, race and ethnicity take place, and how are they articulated and organised?
We welcome empirical, theoretical and methodological papers engaging with these questions in diverse thematic and geographical contexts. The questions and themes addressed may include but are not limited to:
- Social movements and NGOs
- Political activism
- Post/neo-colonialism
- Migration, refugees and asylum seeking
- Politics of race and (anti-)racism
- Politics of class, labour and precarity
- Politics of gender and sexuality
- Feminist futures
- Urban change, neoliberalism and activism
- Politicisation of everyday life
- Politics of consumption and environment
- Challenges to and visions of democratic participation

Gender and Love
The Gender and Love Project
Sunday 20th September - Tuesday 22nd September 2015
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom
Call for Presentations:
The "Gender and Love" project calls for reflections on the interaction between gender and love and how this nexus of ideas pertains to self-perception, (dis-)ability, ethics, religion, kinship, bonding, nationality, globalization, environment, etc. The project welcomes elaborations on gender and love in all forms, styles, and media, past or present. It invites not mere descriptions of, but attempts to grapple with inconsistencies and gaps in knowledge of how gender and love are constructed, mutually construct each other, and are culturally (re-)presented.
The project's central questions are:
How do interactions of gender and love promote particular performances of gender and sexuality; conceptions of individual and collective identity; formations of community; notions of the human; and moral attitudes to other human beings, animals, the non- or post-human, and the environment?
Papers, performances, presentations, reports, works-in-progress, and workshops are invited on issues related to any of the following themes:
1. Love as a Disciplinary Force: Productions of Gender:
- Love, Gender, Essentialism and Ontology
- Love, Gender and Narrative
- Love, Gender and the Law
- Love, Gender and Religion
2. Norms, Normativity, Intimacy:
- Rituals and Rites
- Conventions, Commitments and Obligations
- Choices and Respect; Loyalty and Trust
- Transgressions and Taboos
3. Gendered Yearnings:
- Personhood and Identity
- Body Politics and Belonging
- Love and Gender Performativity
- Transgender Desires
- Queer Kinship Formations
- Queer Conceptualisations of the State
- Interpersonal attraction
4. Representations of Gender and Love:
- Aesthetics and Intelligibility
- Gendered Narrations of Love
- Media, Gender and Love
In 2015, and adding to our general issues, we are particularly interested in exploring and understanding gender and love from a global perspective. Does globalization affect transformations of intimacy; gendered yearnings, and bonding strategies? Do global concerns set new contexts for enacting the politics of gender and love, maybe leading to increased tolerance of sexual and kinship diversity? Or does globalization provoke local defense mechanisms to protect and impose heteronormative performances of gender and love? What do "glocal" negotiations of gender and love look like and how viable are they as culturally composite constructs?
The Steering Group welcomes the submission of proposals for short workshops, practitioner-based activities, performances, and pre-formed panels. We particularly welcome short film screenings; photographic essays; installations; interactive talks and alternative presentation styles that encourage engagement.
What to Send:
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 1st May 2015. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 3rd July 2015. Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to both Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word or RTF formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: GL5 Abstract Submission.
Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). We acknowledge receipt and answer to all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.

8 (4852) 43 41 82; [email protected].
